    #3 BISHOP'S POND
    #2 VERVE'S TALE

The Beldame was run at Aqueduct prior to 1957, in 1959, and 1962-68. Run at 1 1/16 miles in 1939, 1 1/8 miles from 1940-76, 1 1/4 miles 1977-89, and 1 1/16 miles in 1990. Here in the 78th running of The Dame, #1 ELATE takes a slight class drop (-1) is the speed leader in this field racing at today's distance of 9.0 furlongs on the dirt, and has hit the board in "POWER RUN FASHION" in each of her last four outings, winning twice in this recent streak of racing consistency. #5 MONEY'SONCHARLOTTE, an 8-1 shot, has won four straight, including back-to-back "POWER RUN WINS" in her last two starts.

Race 1 - Maiden Claiming - 6.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $10000 Class Rating: 61

      RECOMMENDED CHOICES
      The Walker Group Picks

      # 3 EXPECT IT'S TRUE 7/5

      # 4 WILLY BE SMART 6/5

      # 2 TEECHIME 9/2

I've got to go with EXPECT IT'S TRUE. Change in Lasix (with second time Lasix) may be the means to a turnaround. Always good to invest in a handler with this kind of very good win percentage - 30 percent - at this distance & surface. Nelson will probably be able to get this gelding to break out sharply in this race. WILLY BE SMART - Has to be given a chance against this group displaying strong numbers recently and an average speed figure of 65 under similar conditions. Looks strong against this group and will almost certainly be one of the leaders. TEECHIME - The Equibase speed fig of 52 from his most recent contest looks very good in here. Like the finishing positions in the last couple of events.

Oak Tree at Pleasanton - Race #8 - Post: 5:21pm - Stakes - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $75,000 Class Rating: 92 Oak Tree Juvenile S.

          Rating: 3

          #1 AXELROD (ML=10/1)
          #4 RESPECT THE HUSTLE (ML=7/2)
          #8 UNPOSSIBLE (ML=15/1)

AXELROD - 'Iggy' and McCarthy teamed up together are a horseplayer's friend. A thoroughbred coming back this soon after a strong race is a good signal. RESPECT THE HUSTLE - I like to wager on this angle, a thoroughbred coming back off a sharp outing within the last month or so. The return on investment when Hernandez and McLean hook up is good. Look at this pattern of improvement. 71/78/90 are the last three speed ratings. UNPOSSIBLE - This jockey and handler's horses have been generating a positive return on investment.

          Vulnerable Contenders: #2 ARTIE B GOOD (ML=2/1), #6 BOMBARDEO (ML=4/1), #5 NIGHT AT THE OPERA (ML=9/2),

ARTIE B GOOD - Don't believe this pony will make a winning move in today's race. That last speed rating was common when compared with today's Equibase class figure. BOMBARDEO - A bit of a less than stellar performance when this colt finished eleventh. Could be tough for this horse to beat this field off of that last speed rating. Improbable to improve enough to run a figure anywhere near today's class figure, so put him on the vulnerable contenders list. NIGHT AT THE OPERA - The speed rating last race out doesn't fit very well in this event when I look at the class rating of today's race. Mark this entrant as a likely underlay.

          STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Go with #1 AXELROD on top if we're getting at least 7/2 odds

              # 3 CAT IN DE NILE 9/2

              # 2 BUY LOW SELL HIGH 5/2

              # 6 GO APPLE JACK 2/1

My choice in this event is CAT IN DE NILE. With a strong 75 average Equibase Speed Fig at the distance, seems well suited for today's contest. Reason to like this filly as she has in the irons one of the best jocks using winning percentages over the last month. Keep this filly in your exotics as Cabrera has given backers some double digit gains. BUY LOW SELL HIGH - She has been running solidly and the Equibase speed figs are among the best in this field. Profitable jock and conditioner team, with a +30 return on investment. GO APPLE JACK - Profitable jock and handler team, with a +40 return on investment. Has to be given a shot based on the respectable speed figure put up in the last contest.

                Thistledown - Race #8 - Post: 5:10pm - Maiden Special - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $22,500 Class Rating: 61

                Rating: 4

                #7 CASCABRIA (ML=8/1)
                #1 HARPER SOPHIA (ML=9/2)

CASCABRIA - Good return on investment for this jockey and conditioner tandem. Looking at today's class rating, this thoroughbred is up against an easier field than in the last race at Thistledown. This filly is in exceptional physical condition right now. Ended up second in the last race and comes back soon. Ranked number 1 in earnings per race entered. Another indication that this horse has the class to win today. HARPER SOPHIA - Ran last out against a higher rated class of horses at Indiana Downs. The move to a lower class rank should suit her well. You always have to be on the watch for money making jock/trainer combinations; we have an instance right here. This filly's last speed figure is lofty enough to score here, I'll invest in her right back this time out.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #2 MAMA'S HOPE (ML=4/1), #4 MIZZENMYHONEYMOON (ML=5/1), #10 SHARI'S TIME (ML=6/1),

MAMA'S HOPE - This horse hasn't been on the track since September 6th. Not even any morning blow outs. MIZZENMYHONEYMOON - 5/1 is not worth the risk for any animal in a sprint of 5 1/2 furlongs that hasn't hit the board in a short distance race of late. SHARI'S TIME - This filly hasn't had any positive efforts in sprint contests in the last 60 days. Not probable that the speed rating she registered on September 16th will hold up in this race. The pace scenario just isn't too promising for this speedy one. Many other thoroughbreds would have to scratch to promote her chances.

                STRAIGHT WAGERS:
#7 CASCABRIA to win at post-time odds of 9/5 or better

                  Preview: Astros at Red Sox

                  Gracenote
                  Sep 30, 2017

The Boston Red Sox dropped five of their final six contests in the regular season last year and were swept out of the playoffs in three games by the Cleveland Indians. The Red Sox are hoping a similar slump at the end of the 2017 campaign doesn't doom them to the same fate and they will try to avoid a fifth loss in six games when they host the Houston Astros on Saturday.

Boston's recent slump has put the American League East race back in the picture, and the New York Yankees are sitting two games behind with two left to play. The Red Sox surged into first place in the East on the strength of a solid pitching staff but is seeing that erode of late and did not have a starter log a quality start in the last turn through the rotation. The Astros (100-60) aren't likely to roll over for Boston as they try to hunt down the Cleveland Indians (101-59) for the best record in the AL and homefield advantage throughout the AL playoffs. Houston, which is riding a five-game winning streak, will send Lance McCullers Jr. to the mound on Saturday while the Red Sox try to coax a quality start out of lefty Drew Pomeranz.

                  TV: 1:05 p.m. ET, FOX

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Lance McCullers Jr. (7-3, 4.01 ERA) vs. Red Sox LH Drew Pomeranz (16-6, 3.38)

McCullers battled injury over the last two months and is trying to prove he deserves a spot in the Houston rotation during the playoffs. The Florida native, who turns 24 on Monday, made his first start since Sept. 6 on Sunday against the Los Angeles Angels and was limited to 63 pitches, allowing two runs and four hits over 3 1/3 frames. McCullers last started at Boston on May 13, 2016, and was ripped for five runs on seven hits and three walks across 4 2/3 innings.

Pomeranz suffered through his shortest outing of the season against Toronto on Monday, when he was ripped for five runs on seven hits and a walk in two innings. The 28-year-old, whose velocity was down in his last outing, allowed a total of three runs and 12 hits in 18 1/3 innings over his previous three turns. Pomeranz started at Houston on June 16 and yielded one run on four hits over 6 1/3 innings but did not factor in the decision.

                  WALK-OFFS

                  1. Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia, who is playing through a knee injury, is 3-for-36 in his last 10 games.

                  2. Houston RF Josh Reddick was sent back to Texas to have his back examined by team doctors but is expected to be ready for the postseason.

                  3. Boston INF Eduardo Nunez (knee) is doubtful to play this weekend but could return for the playoffs.

PREDICTION: Astros 6, Red Sox 1

                      Sep 29, 2017

The New York Yankees are intent on forcing Boston to win the American League East and will try to keep the pressure on their bitter rival when they resume a three-game series against the visiting Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon. Trailing the Red Sox by two games with two to play, New York would host Boston in a potential tiebreaker Monday.

Slugger Aaron Judge, the AL leader with 51 homers, continues to enhance his MVP credentials by extending his hitting streak to a career-best 12 games and collecting his 31st RBI in September in Friday's 4-0 win. Greg Bird had two hits and drove in two runs to give him both a seven-game hitting and RBI streak for New York, which reached 90 wins for the first time since 2012. Blue Jays right-hander Marcus Stroman is looking to close out his season by beating the Yankees for the second time within a week as he makes his fifth start against them in 2017. He will have a rematch with left-hander Jaime Garcia, who will be seeking to rebound from his shortest outing of the year.

                      TV: 1:05 p.m. ET, FOX

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Marcus Stroman (13-8, 3.06 ERA) vs. Yankees LH Jaime García (5-10, 4.41)

Stroman, who is three innings shy of reaching 200 for the second straight season, won his second start in a row by giving up three runs over 5 2/3 frames to beat the Yankees on Sunday. It was his fourth consecutive home start, including seven strong innings of one-run ball against Kansas City on Sept. 19. Stroman has made 14 starts away from home, posting a 6-2 record and 3.68 ERA.

Garcia lasted only 2 1/3 innings in Toronto on Sunday while giving up five runs on four hits to remain winless in eight starts since he was acquired by the Yankees at the trade deadline. The 31-year-old Mexican had yielded three earned runs or fewer in each of his previous six turns but has yet to make it through six innings with New York. Garcia has a 10.57 ERA in two starts this season against the Blue Jays.

                      WALK-OFFS

                      1. Judge also has at least one RBI in six straight games, although his string of games with an extra-base hit was halted at eight.

                      2. Blue Jays 3B Josh Donaldson is 10-for-22 with three homers, three doubles and six RBIs during a five-game hitting streak.

                      3. Yankees LHP Aroldis Chapman earned his 21st save Friday and has not allowed a run in his last 10 appearances.

PREDICTION: Blue Jays 6, Yankees 5

It figures to be an emotional scene Saturday at AT&T Park as San Francisco Giants veteran Matt Cain faces the San Diego Padres in the final start of his storied career. The Giants’ longest tenured player, Cain announced his retirement earlier this week, marking the end to a career highlighted by three World Series championships, the only perfect game in Giants history and a starting spot in the 2012 All-Star Game.

Buster Posey recorded three doubles and three RBIs in Friday’s 8-0 victory over San Diego, a win that ensures the Giants will avoid joining the 1985 club as the only ones in franchise history to record 100 losses. The victory means the team can focus its attention on Cain, who will turn 33 on Sunday. “This weekend will definitely be my last time putting on a Giants uniform, and I can’t see myself going anywhere else to play with another team,” Cain told reporters. “This organization has meant so much to me and so much to my family. It’s something that's dear to my heart. I’m just grateful that it's been a part of my life. I’ve enjoyed it. I’ve enjoyed it so much.” Cain will be facing a Padres team that has lost five in a row and been outscored 44-9 over that stretch.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, FSN San Diego, NBCSN Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Jhoulys Chacin (13-10, 3.98 ERA) vs. Giants RH Matt Cain (3-11. 5.66)

Chacin took a no-hitter into the sixth inning last Saturday against Colorado and earned the victory after allowing one hit with six strikeouts over six scoreless innings. The 29-year-old native of Venezuela has gone 9-5 with a 3.01 ERA over his last 19 starts. Pablo Sandoval is 9-for-32 with three home runs against Chacin, who is 8-7 in 20 career games (19 starts) against San Francisco - including a 4-1 mark and 2.09 ERA in seven outings at AT&T Park.

Cain is making his first appearance since Aug. 31, when he allowed two runs over five innings in a 5-2 loss to St. Louis. The highly respected veteran has started 330 games in 13 seasons with the Giants, the second-most in the San Francisco era behind Juan Marichal (446). Cain, who brings a 104-118 career record into his career finale, has gone 8-14 with a 3.20 ERA in 38 games (37 starts) against San Diego.

                          WALK-OFFS

                          1. San Diego 1B Wil Myers has hit safely in nine consecutive games against San Francisco dating back to July 16.

                          2. Giants C Nick Hundley received the “Willie Mac” Award, named for Hall-of-Famer Willie McCovey and given to the team’s most inspirational player.

                          3. San Diego has a 7-0-1 series record against the Giants since the 2016 All-Star break.

                          PREDICTION: Giants 7, Padres 5

With the National League Central title secured and nothing to play for, the Chicago Cubs still provided some drama for the fans in the final series of the regular season. Ian Happ's three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth was the difference in the Cubs' 5-4 win over the visiting Cincinnati Reds, who look to even the series Saturday afternoon.

Happ's decisive blast in Friday's 5-4 victory was his second homer in as many days and his 24th of the year -- the second-highest total in NL history for a rookie switch hitter (behind Pittsburgh's Josh Bell with 26). Winners of three in a row, Chicago used a patchwork lineup for the second straight game after clinching the division title Wednesday night, but more regulars are expected to see action Saturday. Reds first baseman Joey Votto reached a personal milestone with his third 100-RBI season -- and first since 2011 -- while extending his hitting streak to 10 games. Cincinnati rookie Jackson Stephens will make his fourth career start when he opposes Cubs left-handed Jon Lester, making his final tuneup before the NL Division series.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati), CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Jackson Stephens (2-0, 3.86 ERA) vs. Cubs LH Jon Lester (12-8, 4.46)

Stephens earned the win in his major league debut against the Cubs on July 1 by allowing three runs over five innings while striking out eight, although he surrendered a pair of homers. The 23-year-old is coming off the most impressive performance of his brief career, limiting Boston to one run on two hits over six innings in a no-decision. Stephens has permitted five homers in his three starts.

Lester rebounded from a woeful effort at Tampa Bay with six innings of one-run ball in St. Louis on Monday for his third quality start in four turns. "I have to get back to being me," he said afterward. "I have to get back to putting hitters in a defensive mode as opposed to trying to pitch to a scouting report from pitch one.
