    Preview: Illinois at Iowa

    Gracenote
    Oct 5, 2017

Illinois will have a new starting quarterback when it plays a Big Ten game Saturday at Iowa. Jeff George Jr. will be under center in place of Chayce Crouch when the Fighting Illini attempt to end a four-game losing streak against the Hawkeyes.

"Some positions you try to stay the course as much as you possibly can," Illinois coach Lovie Smith told reporters. "But you kind of have to look at what's going on on the field." Crouch has completed 53.2 percent of his passes with one touchdown and four interceptions for the Fighting Illini, who have lost two straight by a combined 46 points. George, the son of former Illinois and NFL quarterback Jeff George, was only slightly better in his lone appearance this season with one touchdown pass and two interceptions against South Florida. The Hawkeyes, who have suffered one-score losses to No. 4 Penn State and Michigan State the last two games, are well situated at quarterback with Nathan Stanley. The sophomore, who was held with a touchdown pass for the only time this season last Saturday against Michigan State, has thrown for more than 1,000 yards with 12 touchdowns and one interception in five games.

TV: Noon ET, Big Ten Network. Line: Iowa - 8.5

ABOUT ILLINOIS (2-2, 0-1 Big Ten): With struggles in the passing game, the Fighting Illini have relied on a freshman running back to carry the offensive load. Mike Epstein has produced 263 yards and three touchdowns on the ground and 59 yards and one score through the air. No other running back has produced better than three yards per carry for Illinois, who lead the series with Iowa 38-32-2 but are in danger of losing for the ninth time in 10 meetings.
ABOUT IOWA (3-2, 0-2): Senior running back Akrum Wadley has been active as both a runner and receiver for the Hawkeyes, who defeated Illinois 28-0 last season. Wadley has run for 368 yards and three touchdowns while catching 13 balls for a team-leading 244 yards and two scores. Stanley, who is the first quarterback in Iowa history to have 12 touchdown passes in his first four starts, has connected with six different receivers for scores - including three each to Nick Easley and Noah Fant.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Wadley has 2,131 career rushing yards and is 98 shy of moving past Shonn Greene into the top 10 in program history.

    2. Iowa's senior LB Josey Jewell, who has produced back-to-back games with 16 tackles, leads the Big Ten with 60 and boasts 8.5 tackles for loss.

    3. Illinois DE Isaiah Gay is the third-youngest true freshman to start a game this season in the FBS and is one of 19 first-time starters for his team.

    PREDICTION: Iowa 47, Illinois 23

        Preview: Wake Forest at Clemson

        Gracenote
        Oct 5, 2017

If No. 2 Clemson has any notion of taking visiting Wake Forest lightly on Saturday, coach Dabo Swinney’s message didn’t get through. The Tigers look to continue the strong start to their national title defense against an improved Demon Deacons team that has the ACC’s attention.

Clemson has won eight straight in the series by a combined 299-107 score, but Swinney is trying to ensure his team doesn’t overlook the Demon Deacons. “I’ll just tell you right out of the gate, this is a very, very good football team that we’re getting ready to play, and if anybody says anything different, then you have absolutely no clue what you’re talking about,” Swinney told reporters. “So if there’s any inclination that people like to create that this team right here is not a legit contender for our division, you have no idea what you’re talking about.” Wake Forest started 4-0, including a blowout win at Boston College, before suffering a tough 26-19 loss to Florida State last week. The Demon Deacons also started 4-0 a season ago but dropped six of their last eight before beating Temple in the Military Bowl.
TV: Noon ET, ESPN2. LINE: Clemson -21.5

ABOUT WAKE FOREST (4-1, 1-1 ACC): The Demon Deacons have been solid on both sides of the ball, boasting a balanced offense and ranking second in the ACC in scoring defense (14.4 points per game). Quarterback John Wolford and redshirt freshman receiver Greg Dortch have been a lethal combination for opposing defenses, but Wake Forest also averages 192 rushing yards per game. The stingy defense has been especially tough against the pass, and defensive lineman Duke Ejiofor is the big-play threat on that side of the ball with 10 1/2 tackles for loss and three sacks.
ABOUT CLEMSON (5-0, 3-0): The Tigers have been dominant in every facet through five games, including three wins over top-15 opponents. Clemson ranks fourth in the nation in scoring defense (10.8 points per game) and seventh in total defense (250 yards), and those numbers would be even more impressive if not for stats opponents have put up in the fourth quarter of lopsided games. Quarterback Kelly Bryant has been nearly flawless in taking over under center, leading the team with 362 rushing yards and seven touchdowns while also passing for 1,059 yards with three TDs and three interceptions.

        EXTRA POINTS
        1. Clemson has won 48 of its last 49 games against unranked teams and 50 straight when holding opponents under 23 points.
        2. Wake Forest K Mike Weaver has made 12 consecutive field goals, two shy of the program record set in 2011 by Jimmy Newman.
        3. Clemson LB Dorian O’Daniel has returned two interceptions for touchdowns, the first member of the program to do so since Arlington Nunn brought back three for scores in 1990.

PREDICTION: Clemson 33, Wake Forest 13

            Preview: Georgia at Vanderbilt

            Gracenote
            Oct 4, 2017

No. 6 Georgia's SEC schedule has resembled a one-sided demolition to this point. The Bulldogs aim to make Vanderbilt their next victim when they visit the Commodores on Saturday.

In its first two league games, Georgia has trounced Mississippi State 31-3 and Tennessee 41-0. In last weekend's win over the Volunteers, Jake Fromm ran for two scores and threw another TD as the team began a season 5-0 for the first time since 2012. "Keep chopping wood and let's get some more," Georgia coach Kirby Smart said after his team held the Vols to 142 total yards. Next up for the Bulldogs is a Vanderbilt team that is playing a ranked foe for the fourth straight week.

TV: Noon ET, ESPN. LINE: Georgia -16.5

ABOUT GEORGIA (5-0, 2-0 SEC): After spraining his knee in the season opener, quarterback Jacob Eason returned to action in the fourth quarter last week once the game was already decided. The sophomore Eason and the freshman Fromm could split action this weekend, although the running attack likely will remain the focus of the Bulldogs' offense. Nick Chubb (6.4 yard rushing average) has six touchdowns on the season, while Sony Michel and D'Andre Swift have impressed in reserve roles.

ABOUT VANDERBILT (3-2, 0-2): Since giving up 13 total points in their first three games, the Commodores have allowed 97 points in the last two contests. The team was competitive in last week's 14-point loss to Florida, although the rushing attack (20 carries for 46 yards) and third-down conversions (3-for-13) left much to be desired. Kyle Shurmur completed less than 50 percent of his passes, but he did throw three touchdowns without an interception and has an 11-to-1 TD-to-INT ratio this year.

            EXTRA POINTS

            1. Vanderbilt stunned Georgia on the road last year, 17-16, after losing 19 of the previous 21 meetings.

            2. Chubb has one catch on the season and only 10 catches over the last three seasons.

            3. Through five games, Javon Wims actually leads the Bulldogs with 11 receptions.

            PREDICTION: Georgia 33, Vanderbilt 17

                Oct 4, 2017

The rest of the SEC might not want to hear this, but Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn believes his team still has room to improve. The No. 13 Tigers will look to do just that as they seek a third consecutive conference blowout victory against visiting Ole Miss.

Auburn's 49-10 evisceration of Mississippi State last week gave the Tigers their first back-to-back wins over conference opponents by 30 or more points in three decades - but Malzahn isn't satisfied. "Our challenge has been to continue to get better," he told reporters. "Few teams around the country are able to improve each week with execution and getting better at who they are and what they do. That is really the formula." Ole Miss can certainly get better - by a lot - after kicking off conference play in the worst way possible, winding up on the wrong end of a 66-3 drubbing at the hands of Alabama. "The most important thing for us moving forward is to go wash this tape, flush it and move on to the next one," head coach Matt Luke said afterward.

TV: Noon ET, SEC Network. LINE: Auburn -21

ABOUT OLE MISS (2-2, 0-1 SEC): Any chance of a bounceback begins and ends with quarterback Shea Patterson, who looked sensational in passing for 918 yards and nine touchdowns in season-opening wins over South Alabama and Tennessee-Martin but was exposed in road games against Cal and Alabama, throwing for a combined 528 yards with two TDs and five interceptions. The run game has been a weak spot all season, averaging fewer than 75 yards per game - among the worst rates in Division I - and just 2.9 yards per carry. The receiving tandem of A.J. Brown and DeMarkus Lodge has combined for 34 catches, 751 yards and eight touchdowns, though all but one of those scores came in the first two games of the season.
ABOUT AUBURN (4-1, 2-0): The Tigers have tinkered with their offensive line to start the season - rolling with three different configurations through the first five games - but appear to have found a mix they like. The combination of Austin Golson at left tackle, Mike Horton at left guard, Casey Dunn at center, Braden Smith at right guard and Darius James at left guard helped Auburn average a whopping 9.1 yards per play while not committing a penalty against Mississippi State, and will be kept intact for this week's game against the Rebels. "I think we'll be able to build upon things up front," Malzahn said of the offensive line, which surrendered just two sacks in the lopsided win.

                EXTRA POINTS

                1. The Tigers are the only Division I team yet to allow more than 14 points in a game this season.

                2. Auburn QB Jarrett Stidham has completed 72 percent of his passes, tops in the SEC and eighth-best in the nation.

                3. Ole Miss has yet to score a point off a turnover in 2017, while giving up 38 of its own.

PREDICTION: Auburn 45, Ole Miss 20

                    Oct 4, 2017

Temple will look to get its struggling offense on track when it visits East Carolina in an American Athletic Conference game Saturday. The Owls are averaging a meager 16.2 points but find themselves in a good place to improve those numbers as the Pirates have allowed more than 50 points three times this season.

Quarterback Thomas Sirk passed for 302 yards and a pair of touchdowns and ran for 87 yards and two scores in East Carolina's 61-31 home loss to No. 16 South Florida last week. The Pirates, whose lone win was a 41-38 shootout at Connecticut, are allowing 50.6 points per game -- second-worst in the nation. Temple has been much stingier defensively, allowing 29.2 points but the Owls continue to struggle to score. First-year quarterback Logan Marchi, who was benched the week before, had three costly interceptions in last week's loss to Houston.TV: Noon ET, ESPNU. LINE: Temple -2.5

ABOUT TEMPLE (2-3, 0-2 AAC): The Owls have lost two straight, both coming in conference play, including last week's 20-13 setback against visiting Houston. Marchi was 20-for-41 passing for Temple, which trailed 20-0 and cut the deficit to one score with 8:37 to play but could get no closer. Temple will be without defensive back Cequan Jefferson, running back Jager Gardner and standout placekicker Austin Jones, all of whom suffered injuries in the past two outings.
ABOUT EAST CAROLINA (1-4, 1-1): The Pirates allowed 575 yards of offense to South Florida last week, lowering their season average to 614.8. “I really do think that the speed, the overall team speed of USF, put us on our heels when we shouldn’t have been,” East Carolina coach Scottie Montgomery told reporters. “We should have been much more aggressive." Temple will try to lessen the burden on the struggling Marchi by running the ball against the Pirates, who have yielded 297.6 rushing yards per game -- third-worst in the country.

                    EXTRA POINTS
                    1. East Carolina's average home attendance in three games is 39,609, which leads the American Athletic Conference
                    2. Temple has won three straight in the series, including last year's 37-10 victory in Philadelphia.
                    3. Marchi has a 42.6 percent completion percentage with 214 yards, six interceptions and one touchdown in conference play.

Third-ranked Oklahoma will put the nation's longest active winning streak on the line Saturday afternoon when it hosts Iowa State. The Sooners have won 14 consecutive games, a streak that dates back 385 days to a 45-24 home loss to Ohio State on Sept. 17, 2016.

That's not the only streak that will be on the line for first-year Lincoln Riley's squad. Oklahoma has also won 17 consecutive Big 12 Conference games, has defeated Iowa State 18 straight times and has scored at least 30 points in each game of its current 14-game win streak. The Sooners and quarterback Baker Mayfield, one of the top candidates for the Heisman Trophy, have made no secret that their goal is to win a national championship so they can ill afford to get caught looking ahead to next week's Red River Rivalry showdown with Texas. "I think it goes back to having a championship mentality and understanding that every single game is important and that at the end of the year. They all count the same," Riley said. "We know what it takes to win this conference, and I think that's been big. And I think also, you've got to understand, at Oklahoma, you're going to get everybody's best shot."

TV: Noon, FOX. LINE: Oklahoma -28

ABOUT IOWA STATE (2-2, 0-1 Big 12): The Cyclones come in off a 17-7 home loss to Texas last Thursday night, a game in which they managed just 10 rushing yards and 256 total yards. No doubt much of the extra practice preparation for Saturday's contest centered around protecting quarterback Jacob Park who was sacked four times and was hit numerous other times while also throwing three interceptions. Park still ranks 15th in the NCAA in passing yards (295.2 yards per game) and has thrown nine touchdown passes, thanks in great part to senior All-American wide receiver Allen Lazard who has 24 receptions for 241 yards and three TDs despite constant double-teaming.

ABOUT OKLAHOMA (4-0, 1-0): Mayfield, who hasn't thrown an interception in his last six games dating back to last season, leads the nation in passing efficiency rating (228.3) and passing yards per attempt (13.2) and has thrown at least two touchdown passes in 17 consecutive games. The Sooners come in off a closer-than-expected 49-41 win at Baylor that saw OU roll up 625 yards with Mayfield completing 13-of-19 passes for 283 yards and three touchdowns. The defense, led by DE/LB Ogboonia Okoronkwo (4.5 sacks. 7.5 tackles for loss), has limited its first four opponents to an average of 198.5 passing yards and 19.5 points per outing.

                        EXTRA POINTS

                        1. Oklahoma hasn't lost to Iowa State since a 33-31 setback in 1990 in Norman and is 45-1-1 in its last 47 meetings with the Cyclones.

                        2. Iowa State has lost its last 20 games against ranked opponents dating back to a 37-23 victory at No. 15 TCU in 2012.

                        3. Iowa State is one of eight teams in the nation to not have lost a fumble this season.

PREDICTION: Oklahoma 56, Iowa State 14

Tulane prides itself on being able to run the ball and should see the lanes open this week, when it hosts Tulsa on Saturday. The Golden Hurricane faced a similar offense in a home loss to Navy last week and are trying to avoid a four-game slide and sole possession of last place in the American Athletic Conference's West Division.

Tulsa is surrendering an average of 319.8 yards on the ground, the worst mark among FBS schools, and was gashed for 421 rushing yards in the 31-21 setback against the Midshipmen last week while playing with an injury-depleted group. “We have basically four guys that started the season that aren't out there, and then we got some backups to those guys that aren't out there," Golden Hurricane coach Philip Montgomery told reporters of his defense after the loss to Navy. "We've got a lot of young guys out there playing. I thought they played extremely well. Those guys up front, you look at the guys that are rotating in, and especially on the interior, I'm not sure the oldest one is not a true sophomore." The Green Wave will attack that defense with a rushing offense that averages 244.3 yards and has yet to lose at home after outlasting Army 21-17 in their last game on Sept. 23. Dontrell Hilliard posted his second straight 100-yard effort with 134 yards in the win and is averaging 5.8 yards per carry.

                            TV:
                            4 p.m. ET, ESPNU. LINE: Tulane -4.5

ABOUT TULSA (1-4): The Golden Hurricane might not be able to stop the run with their defense, but they can roll up yards on the ground with their offense. Tulsa's rushing attack is even better than Tulane's at an average of 295 yards and senior D'Angelo Brewer leads the way with 643 yards and six touchdowns. Quarterback Chad President only owns two passing TDs but ran in for five scores and leads the team with an average of 7.8 yards per carry.

ABOUT TULANE (2-2): The Green Wave got a week off after winning a bruising battle with Army and will try to get an offense that features five different players with at least 115 rushing yards on the season into gear after it topped out at 21 points in the last three games. Hilliard leads the way but fellow senior Sherman Baddie is becoming a big-play threat in the running game and is averaging 7.8 yards per carry. Baddie carried only twice in the win over Army but one was a 72-yard TD scamper that put Tulane in front at the half.

                            EXTRA POINTS

                            1. Tulane S Roderic Teamer is third in FBS with seven sacks.

                            2. The Green Wave have lost only two turnovers on the season.

                            3. Tulsa took the last three meetings in the series, including a 50-27 win last season.

                            PREDICTION: Tulane 24, Tulsa 21
