                      Oct 5, 2017

Indiana looks to keep its perfect non-conference record intact Saturday when it takes on visiting FCS school Charleston Southern. The Hoosiers are 0-2 in Big Ten play -- albeit against nationally-ranked Ohio State and Penn State -- but have defeated Virginia and Georgia Southern in their only other two non-conference games this season since a contest against Florida International was cancelled.

In those two losses, the Hoosiers have struggled offensively, leading head coach Tom Allen to make redshirt freshman Peyton Ramsey the full-time starter at quarterback for the rest of the season. Ramsey and previous starter Richard Lagow had been rotating during games, but Allen decided the team needed to have more consistency at the position and picked the more mobile Ramsey (316 passing yards, four TDs, 117 rushing yards). The presence of Ramsey under center should help running back Morgan Ellison (team-high 310 yards, two TDs) since teams can't focus just on stopping him when Indiana runs the ball. The Hoosiers might need all the firepower they can muster against the Buccaneers, who have averaged 62 points over their last two games, both victories.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, Big Ten Network. LINE: None

ABOUT CHARLESTON SOUTHERN (2-2): The Buccaneers are stacked in the backfield, with a running attack that averages 227 yards a game and 5.1 per rush. And while leading rusher Noah Shuler garners a lot of headlines with his 204 yards and four touchdowns, Terrance Wilson is making a name for himself in a hurry as well and could find himself toting the pigskin even more this week. The freshman has gained 164 yards on just 12 carries, averaging 13.7 yards per carry, and he had two scoring runs of 62 and 44 yards in last week's win over Mississippi Valley State on his only two runs of the contest.

ABOUT INDIANA (2-2): One area of focus for the Hoosiers this week has been special teams, which killed the team in their game with Penn State last week. In the first quarter, Indiana allowed an opening kickoff return for a touchdown by Saquon Barkley, fumbled away the ball on a punt return that was returned for a score and committed a roughing the kicker penalty that set the Nittany Lions up for another score. Allen didn't make any major changes to the special teams lineup but has emphasized to his team that they must do better on eliminating the mistakes that cost them against Penn State.

                      EXTRA POINTS

                      1. Indiana's defense limited Penn State to 39 rushing yards last week, the fewest by a Big Ten opponent since November 2013 against Purdue (31).

                      2. Hoosiers LB Tegray Scales set a career high with three sacks against Penn State and also notched a team-best 11 tackles.

                      3. Indiana's Ian Thomas ranks No. 1 in the Big Ten and fifth nationally among tight ends with 254 receiving yards while his three touchdowns tie him for third nationally.

PREDICTION: Indiana 48, Charleston Southern 20

                        Preview: Miami at Florida State

                        Gracenote
                        Oct 4, 2017

Originally scheduled for Sept. 16 but postponed due to Hurricane Irma, Miami and Florida State are gearing up for their annual instate showdown Saturday afternoon. The 12th-ranked Hurricanes head to Tallahassee fresh off a solid 31-6 road victory over Duke, while the Seminoles come off their first win of the season, 26-19 over Wake Forest, but still fell out of the USA Today Top 25 Coaches Poll.

One of college football's fiercest rivalries, the Seminoles have earned bragging rights the last seven years under coach Jimbo Fisher, finding ways to pull out victories, with the last three decided by five points or less, including a 20-19 triumph a year ago thanks to a blocked extra point in the final minutes. "We all know that it's a rivalry game," said Miami coach Mark Richt, one of many players and coaches on both sidelines to have connections to the other team. "Rivalry games are important. They're better rivalries when there's some winning and losing on both sides, and that hasn't happened lately." The Hurricanes are hoping to change that this year and end their streak of futility, but while they are undefeated and creeping up the rankings thanks to a resurgent offense (41.3 points scored per game) and a stalwart defense (16.3 points allowed per game), Miami hasn't really been tested thus far, beating just one Power 5 team (Duke). Florida State has faced a far more rigorous slate, but the team is struggling with freshman quarterback James Blackman at the helm after Deondre Francois went down in the opener, resulting in the team's inability to put points on the board as they are averaging just 18 points per game, far less than the 35.1 they averaged a year ago.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Miami -3

ABOUT MIAMI (3-0, 1-0 ACC): Quarterback Malik Rosier is getting better and more confident with each game, completing 65.6 percent of his passes with eight touchdowns and just two interceptions, but he and his receiving corps, led by Braxton Berrios and Ahmmon Richards, who made his debut last week, haven't faced a secondary as talented as Florida State's. The Hurricanes need a healthy Mark Walton (9.2 yards per carry), who has been hampered by an ankle injury the last two games, to keep the defense off balance but the Seminoles have been stingy against the run, especially up the middle. The Miami secondary has had its ups and downs but the unit will be greatly helped by a physical front seven that has 11 sacks and ranks second in the nation in tackles for loss (nine per game).

ABOUT FLORIDA STATE (1-2, 1-1): The Seminoles defense has been inconsistent but it has the ability to shut down Miami and may need to do so as the team can't afford to get into a shootout with the Hurricanes. Blackman threw for just seven yards in the first half against Wake Forest and finished with just 121, although he did connect with Auden Tate for the big-play 40-yard game-winning touchdown. Blackman must hang tough against the Miami front seven and get the ball to his playmakers, but the offense could be in trouble if the blocking up front is as suspect as it was against the Demon Deacons, who amassed five sacks and 17 tackles for loss, numbers that play right into Miami's strength.

                        EXTRA POINTS

                        1. A Florida State victory would mark the longest winning streak in the series (eight games) by either program, as well as tie the all-time series at 31-31.

                        2. The Hurricanes have won eight games in a row dating back to Nov. 5, 2016 and their average margin of victory during the winning streak is 21 points.

                        3. The Seminoles have scored just three touchdowns on their 12 trips inside the red zone.

PREDICTION: Miami 17, Florida State 16

Notre Dame quietly worked its way back into the national polls on Monday and has a chance to make a big leap with strong performances over the next few games. The 22nd-ranked Fighting Irish will try to prove they belong among the nation's elite when they visit North Carolina on Saturday.

Notre Dame's lone loss was a 20-19 setback against Georgia in Week 2, and it has since crushed Boston College, Michigan State and Miami (Ohio) by a combined 139-55. "A standard has been set, and our preparation now is absolutely crucial," Fighting Irish coach Brian Kelly told reporters. "Week in and week out, we know how to do it, and now it's applying that attention to the smallest details. We can't let go of the rope now. (The players) know what they need to do on a day-to-day basis, and so it's my job really to make sure that those smallest of details are looked at on a day-to-day basis, so we prepare our football team to play up to that standard." The Tar Heels aren't having much luck stopping teams this season and are allowing an average of 33 points through five games -- four losses. North Carolina allowed 403 rushing yards in a 33-7 loss at Georgia Tech last week and enters the week ranked 113th in FBS with an average of 221.8 yards allowed on the ground.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC. LINE: Notre Dame -14.5

ABOUT NOTRE DAME (4-1): The Fighting Irish will attack that suspect Tar Heels run defense with an offense averaging 301.4 yards on the ground. Josh Adams is leading the charge with 658 yards and four TDs but quarterback Brandon Wimbush isn't far behind with 402 yards on the ground and a team-best eight rushing scores. Notre Dame, which plays rival USC in its next game on Oct. 21, rushed for at least 300 yards on three different occasions already this season, including 333 in last week's 52-17 walloping of Miami (Ohio).

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA (1-4): The Tar Heels are dealing with a lot of new personnel on offense, including quarterback Chazz Surratt. The freshman beat out transfer Brandon Harris for the job of replacing No. 2 overall NFL pick Mitchell Trubisky and is completing 63.3 percent of his passes for 988 yards, six TDs and two interceptions. "I'm not thinking about down the road with him," North Carolina coach Larry Fedora told reporters of Surratt. "All I'm doing is trying to make sure we have a plan in place that he can execute for this week. That's it. I'm not looking at long-term development. Long-term development will come over the long haul, over all the banked reps and the things that happen in a game."

                                EXTRA POINTS

                                1. Notre Dame recorded each of its last three wins by 20 or more points for the first time since 2005.

                                2. Tar Heels LB Cole Holcomb leads the team with 43 tackles.

                                3. The Fighting Irish are 22-of-22 in the red zone this season.

PREDICTION: Notre Dame 42, North Carolina 24
