    Preview: Hawks at Hornets

    Gracenote
    Oct 19, 2017

The Charlotte Hornets have averaged the fewest turnovers in the NBA each of the past four seasons, but taking care of the ball will be a focal point in Friday’s home opener against the Atlanta Hawks. Charlotte struggled in Wednesday’s 102-90 loss at Detroit, committing 17 turnovers (more than five per game more than it averaged last season) as two newcomers – veteran center Dwight Howard and rookie guard Dwayne Bacon – made their debuts in the Hornets' starting lineup.

“We’ve just got to be better with the ball,” Howard told reporters after scoring 10 points with 15 rebounds and two blocked shots. “We’ve got to be more strong when we get it, when opponents put us on our heels.” Howard gets a chance in his first home game with his new team to face his old team, as Atlanta comes to town following an impressive 117-111 victory at Dallas in its season opener Wednesday. On a roster full of newcomers and inexperienced players, veteran Marco Belinelli hit on 4-of-6 3-point attempts off the bench in scoring 20 points. “It’s just great to have somebody like that coming off the bench and looking for his shots,” point guard Dennis Schroder told the media in describing Belinelli’s performance.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Southeast (Atlanta), FSN Southeast (Charlotte)

ABOUT THE HAWKS (1-0): Schroder was outstanding in his season debut, shooting 13-of-26 from the field for 28 points to go with seven assists. Second-year forward Taurean Prince pulled down 10 rebounds, and rookie forward John Collins scored 14 points with five rebounds in his NBA debut. Atlanta’s bench finished with 57 points on 56.1 percent shooting from the field.

ABOUT THE HORNETS (0-1): The turnovers proved problematic as Detroit finished the night with 26 points off Hornets’ miscues, and shot 52 percent from the field against Charlotte's defense in the opening quarter. Guard Kemba Walker scored 24 points with six rebounds and four assists, but the rest of the Hornets shot just 38.3 percent from the field. Cody Zeller came off the bench to score eight points with nine rebounds.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Atlanta shot 51.1 percent from the field, 50 percent from 3-point range, 80 percent from the free-throw line and recorded 50 rebounds in the opener, reaching those marks in the same game for the first time since Jan. 30, 1993 vs. Philadelphia.

    2. The Hornets played Wednesday without G Nicolas Batum (elbow) and F Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (excused personal absence).

    3. Charlotte won three of the four meetings with Atlanta last season, before sending Belinelli and Miles Plumlee to the Hawks for Howard in the offseason.

    PREDICTION: Hornets 106, Hawks 101

        Preview: Magic at Nets

        Gracenote
        Oct 19, 2017

The Orlando Magic would like to put the memories of a disappointing season behind them quickly and knocking off the Brooklyn Nets on Friday night for their second victory to open the season would be a good start to the process. Orlando, which won just 29 games in 2016-17, held off a Miami rally to take its season debut 116-109 at home on Wednesday as guard Evan Fournier poured in 23 points.

“We can’t feel too good about (beating the Heat),” Magic coach Frank Vogel told the Orlando Sentinel. “We’ve got to go in there hungry and fight like we did (in the opener). I was proud of the level of fight that we exhibited. And we’ve got to show that again in Brooklyn.” The Nets were the worst team in the NBA a season ago and made several key offseason changes, but suffered more than a setback in their season opener when guard Jeremy Lin was lost for the season with a ruptured patella tendon. Newcomer D’Angelo Russell scored 30 points as Brooklyn’s offense thrived, but the Nets fell 140-131 on Wednesday against Indiana. “I thought we completely broke down defensively,” Brooklyn coach Kenny Atkinson told reporters. “I wish I could sit here and say there was one area, but it was a multitude of things.”

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Orlando), YES (Brooklyn)

ABOUT THE MAGIC (1-0): Fournier, who topped the team in scoring a season ago, led six players scoring in double figures against Miami and veteran center Nikola Vucevic contributed 19 points and 13 rebounds. Guard Terrence Ross, who had been hampered by a hamstring injury, scored 15 points with three 3-pointers in the opener and had just one turnover in 31 minutes. Newcomer Jonathon Simmons chipped in with 12 points in his Magic debut while first-round pick Jonathan Isaac registered four points, eight rebounds and two blocks.

ABOUT THE NETS (0-1): Russell connected on 12-of-22 shots from the field and power forward Trevor Booker came off the bench to post 20 points and 10 rebounds to key the Brooklyn offense Wednesday. Lin scored 18 points before the injury, but Allen Crabbe and Caris LeVert will likely take most of his minutes at shooting guard after recording a dozen points apiece against Indiana. Small forward Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, who averaged 8.7 points in 78 games last season, scored 14 in the opener with four rebounds and two assists in 28 minutes.

        BUZZER BEATERS

        1. The Magic have won six of the last seven meetings, but dropped a 121-111 decision at Brooklyn last season.

        2. Brooklyn SF DeMarre Carroll, who is expected to help the team’s defense, had 10 points and nine rebounds in his Nets' debut.

        3. Orlando SG Arron Afflalo, who averaged 17.4 points with the Magic from 2012-14, did not play in his return to the team Wednesday.

        PREDICTION: Magic 115, Nets 104

            Preview: Jazz at Timberwolves

            Gracenote
            Oct 19, 2017

The new-look Minnesota Timberwolves stumbled out of the gate with some meager contributions from a handful of newcomers. The Utah Jazz had no such issues with a retooled roster in their opener and look to stay perfect on the young season when they visit the Timberwolves on Friday night.

Playing their first game since losing longtime star Gordon Hayward to free agency, the Jazz rallied around holdover Alec Burks (16 points in 15 minutes) in a 106-96 win over Denver on Wednesday. "It's surreal," Burks - who averaged just 33.3 games over the last three seasons due to injury - told reporters. "I've been through a lot, injury-wise. It's just great to be out there healthy. ... I was aggressive and things happened to open up. Teams start relaxing. Things happen." Andrew Wiggins scored 26 points to lead Minnesota in its 107-99 loss to San Antonio and Karl-Anthony Towns added 18 and 13 rebounds. Imports Jimmy Butler, Jeff Teague and Taj Gibson combined for 29 points on 11-of-29 shooting.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Utah), FS North (Minnesota)

ABOUT THE JAZZ (1-0): Utah led the NBA in scoring defense last season (96.8 points per game) and was right on that mark in the opener, limiting the Nuggets to 13 fourth-quarter points and forcing 22 turnovers overall. "I think we were persistent defensively — we talked about the defensive identity," coach Quin Snyder said while pointing out the contributions on that end of the floor by forwards Derrick Favors, Thabo Sefolosha and Ekpe Udoh. Center Rudy Gobert led five players in double figures with 18 points and hauled in a team-high 10 boards.

ABOUT THE TIMBERWOLVES (0-1): Teague was brought in as a potentially stabilizing presence at the point guard position, but he saw backup Tyus Jones get just as much action and guide the team down the stretch. Jones finished with a plus-nine rating while Teague was minus-17 as the starters were largely outplayed by San Antonio's first five. Veteran Jamal Crawford had a solid debut with the team by chipping in 10 points and five assists off the bench.

            BUZZER BEATERS

            1. Jazz SF Joe Ingles made 3-of-5 3-pointers in the opener after finishing fourth in the NBA last season from beyond the arc at 44.1 percent.

            2. Minnesota won its home opener last season by 36 points over Memphis, the fourth-largest margin of victory in franchise history.

            3. The visiting team won 10 of the past 15 meetings.

            PREDICTION: Timberwolves 105, Jazz 102

                Preview: Kings at Mavericks

                Gracenote
                Oct 19, 2017

The Sacramento Kings and Dallas Mavericks were picked by many to finish near the bottom of the Western Conference and both squads will be searching for their first wins when they tangle Friday night in Texas. The Mavericks withered late in a 117-111 home loss to Atlanta to begin the 20th season in Dallas for forward Dirk Nowitzki, who struggled to 10 points on 4-of-14 shooting.

The bright spots for Dallas were the solid debut for 19-year-old rookie point guard Dennis Smith Jr. (16 points, 10 assists) and a 6-of-6 effort - to go along with 11 rebounds - for backup forward Nerlens Noel. Justin Jackson, who tangled with Smith last year in the ACC, was limited to five points in 19 minutes in his debut for the Kings during a season-opening 105-100 loss to Houston. Fellow rookie De'Aaron Fox fared much better, amassing 14 points, five assists and four rebounds off the bench for Sacramento. Dallas has taken 23 of the last 25 meetings with the Kings at home.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN California (Sacramento), FS Southwest (Dallas)

ABOUT THE KINGS (0-1): Fox - who is nearly a month younger than Smith - put forth an effort that provided an early glimpse of a potential franchise cornerstone. "Even though I've seen him for the last month or so, it's something to see," guard Garrett Temple told reporters. "When those lights go on, his ability to get into the paint and push the pace is something I haven't seen, besides John Wall. When he gets it going, picks his spots, when he gets that jumper down he is going to be hard to guard." Willie Cauley-Stein led the Kings with 21 points and 10 rebounds in the loss to Houston while veteran point guard George Hill had 16 points in his team debut.

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (0-1): Smith surpassed Nowitzki as the youngest player to start for the Mavericks and has said all the right things so far, displaying a leadership quality that could carry the organization for years. "I've been playing basketball for so long, at the end of the day, age is not a factor,'' Smith told reporters. "We'll watch the film and come back ready to go Friday.'' Forward Harrison Barnes averaged nearly three points fewer after the All-Star break than he did before it last season, and he opened this campaign by missing all six of his 3-point attempts while shooting 3-of-13 overall.

                EXTRA POINTS

                1. The Mavericks attempted 45 3-pointers in the loss to the Hawks, who took just 18 from beyond the arc.

                2. Kings G Buddy Hield, who had 19 points against Houston, hit 7-of-14 3-pointers in his three games versus Dallas last season.

                3. Nowitzki has 1,782 career 3-pointers, five behind Rashard Lewis for 13th on the NBA's all-time list.

                PREDICTION: Mavericks 114, Kings 109

                    Preview: Warriors at Pelicans

                    Gracenote
                    Oct 19, 2017

The Golden State Warriors began last season with a loss and still managed to cruise to the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference and a second NBA title in three years, and they are hoping that trend continues. The Warriors will try to avoid rare back-to-back losses when they begin their first road trip of 2017-18 by visiting the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday.

Golden State shot 53.8 percent from the field, 16-of-30 from 3-point range and handed out 34 assists on 43 field goals but still fell 122-121 to the Houston Rockets on Tuesday after squandering a lead as large as 17 points. "I just thought we looked tired," Warriors coach Steve Kerr told reporters. "I don't think we are in good enough shape yet to play a 48-minute game against a great team." The Pelicans are coming off an opening loss as well despite big men Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins both recording double-doubles, and coach Alvin Gentry is already thinking about some changes. "I think we need to tweak the system some, obviously, but I just thought that we played a little bit too much in isolation," Gentry told reporters after the 103-91 loss at Memphis. "...If you're going to play isolation basketball, they load up and they take away all the driving lanes, so we have to do that by keeping our spacing on the floor and making basket cuts and then relocating on the floor."

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, NBCS Bay Area (Golden State), FS New Orleans

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (0-1): Reigning NBA Defensive Player of the Year Draymond Green collected nine points, 13 assists and 11 rebounds on Tuesday but left before the start of the fourth quarter with a knee strain. Green underwent an MRI on Wednesday that came back clean, but he is not expected to play on Friday. "He was our best player tonight," Kerr told reporters of Green after Tuesday's loss. "He was the guy who was bringing the energy and the life. We didn't have much energy from most of our group tonight. ... When you are lacking conditioning, like we are right now, you have to have high-energy guys out there. As soon as he went out of the game, things went south for us. We just couldn't get any traction."

                    ABOUT THE PELICANS (0-1):
Davis collected 33 points and 18 rebounds on Wednesday while Cousins contributed 28 points, 10 boards and seven blocks, but New Orleans managed only 57 points in the final three quarters after coming out strong with 34 in the first. "I thought we started the first quarter playing the way we should," Gentry told reporters. "I thought we had good ball movement. We got good shots. From there on out I thought that our ball movement wasn't very good. We had eight assists in the first quarter, then we had seven the rest of the way." The Pelicans are missing their best ball mover in point guard Rajon Rondo, who is not expected back until late next month after undergoing hernia surgery.

                    BUZZER BEATERS

                    1. Warriors F Andre Iguodala (back) sat out the opener but is expected to play on Friday.

                    2. New Orleans C Alexis Ajinca (knee) is questionable for Friday after missing the opener.

                    3. Golden State took the last 11 meetings in the series, including a first-round sweep in the 2015 playoffs.

                    PREDICTION: Warriors 119, Pelicans 102

                        Preview: Lakers at Suns

                        Gracenote
                        Oct 20, 2017

The Phoenix Suns experienced the most dreadful season-opening defeat in NBA history and attempt to erase the nightmarish memories when they host the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday. Phoenix shot 31.5 percent from the field in Wednesday's 124-76 home loss to the Portland Trail Blazers and the 48-point margin also represents the worst defeat in Suns' history.

Phoenix trailed by as many as 58 points in the contest that supplanted a 44-point loss to the Seattle SuperSonics on April 2, 1988 as the most lopsided in team annals. "When you get into this game, you get into this league and you have to play a certain way, in the paint, out of the paint, continue to play every possession like it's your last," Suns coach Earl Watson told reporters afterward. "We have to play better, we have to play at a certain level, we have to play at a certain intensity." Lakers point guard Lonzo Ball, the second overall pick in June's NBA draft, made his debut in Thursday's 108-92 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers but was a non-factor with three points on 1-of-6 shooting and four assists in 29 minutes. "We got blown out so I didn't play too well ...," Ball said afterward. "All I care about is winning. We lost (Thursday). We have to regroup (Friday) and come back and try to get a win."

TV: 10 p.m. ET, Spectrum SportsNet (Los Angeles), FSN Arizona (Phoenix)

ABOUT THE LAKERS (0-1): The 19-year-old Ball is expected to make an immediate impact but pesky Clippers guard Patrick Beverley - a first-team All-NBA defender last season - repeatedly hounded him and threw him off his game. The club's other main building block, second-year small forward Brandon Ingram (No. 2 overall pick in 2016), also struggled in the opener with 12 points on 3-of-15 shooting. Off-season acquisition Brook Lopez scored 20 points in his team debut while power forward Larry Nance Jr., who beat out incumbent Julius Randle for the starting gig, displayed plenty of spring in his legs with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

ABOUT THE SUNS (0-1): Phoenix was outrebounded 57-33 and had more turnovers (16) than assists (10) in the porous opener. Star shooting guard Devin Booker, who averaged 22.1 points last season at age 20 in his second campaign, had 12 points on 6-of-17 shooting and backcourt mate Eric Bledsoe tallied 15 on 5-of-18 shooting. Both players fared well in four games against the Lakers last season as Booker averaged 25 points while Bledsoe averaged 21.8 points, 7.3 assists and 2.3 steals.

                        BUZZER BEATERS

                        1. The teams split the four contests last season but the Suns have won 16 of the past 22 meetings.

                        2. Los Angeles SG Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (suspension) will miss the second and final game of his discipline for an offseason drunk-driving offense.

                        3. Phoenix C Alex Len (ankle) missed the opener and is questionable for Friday's game.

                        PREDICTION: Suns 106, Lakers 101
