              Preview: Colorado at Washington State
              Gracenote
              Oct 18, 2017

One week after California derailed its hopes of an undefeated season, No. 18 Washington State looks to bounce back Saturday against visiting Colorado. The Cougars committed seven turnovers and were held without a touchdown for the first time since 2012 in the loss to the Bears, who recorded nine sacks and rolled to a stunning 38-3 victory.

Senior quarterback Luke Falk threw five interceptions and fumbled once as Cal dominated the line of scrimmage and likely ended the Cougars’ chances of landing a spot in the College Football Playoff. “We didn’t play good in any aspect of the game,” Cougars coach Mike Leach told reporters. “Cal outcoached us and outplayed us at every position. Our guys sauntered around the field like weirdly we’d accomplished something, which obviously is false.” Falk figures to return to form against Colorado, which is allowing 35.5 points per game in Pac-12 play but snapped its three-game losing streak with last Saturday’s 36-33 victory over Oregon State. While the Buffaloes’ defense has struggled, running back Phillip Lindsay has carried 69 times for 466 yards and five touchdowns over the last two games and ranks second in the Pac-12 in rushing at 142 yards per contest.

TV: 10:45 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Washington State -10.5

ABOUT COLORADO (4-3, 1-3 Pac-12): Wide receiver Bryce Bobo turned in his best game of the season in the win over Oregon State, recording nine catches for 126 yards and two touchdowns while also throwing a touchdown pass and catching a two-point conversion). Safety Evan Worthington had 12 tackles, one interception and two pass breakups against the Beavers, but the defense allowed 33 points and 569 yards to the worst offense in the conference. Colorado has two sacks in four Pac-12 games and will need dramatic improvement from its defensive line to help contain the Cougars’ Air Raid offense.

ABOUT WASHINGTON STATE (6-1, 3-1): Defensive coordinator Alex Grinch’s unit was a key factor in the Cougars’ 6-0 start, but injured linebackers Peyton Pelluer, Isaac Dotson and Nate DeRider were clearly missed in the loss to Cal. A trio of redshirt freshmen – Jahad Woods, Justus Rogers and Dillon Sherman – could see extensive playing time in their place again this week and will surely be focused on slowing down Lindsay and the Colorado running game. Hercules Mata’afa is tied for the Pac-12 lead with 6.5 sacks, while Falk is the NCAA’s active career leader in passing yards (13,179) and touchdowns (108).

              EXTRA POINTS

              1. Colorado leads the series 6-4 after posting a 38-24 win in Boulder last season.

              2. Buffaloes quarterback Steven Montez has thrown 95 straight passes without an interception.

              3. Washington State is 10-2 at home since the start of the 2016 season, including 5-0 this season.

PREDICTION: Washington State 44, Colorado 24

                  Preview: 76ers at Raptors

                  Oct 21, 2017

The Toronto Raptors will try to maintain their recent dominance of the Philadelphia 76ers when the Atlantic Division foes meet Saturday night in Canada. The Raptors have won 15 of the last 16 meetings and nine in a row at home, and they enter this one on a good note after a cakewalk in their opener.

Jonas Valanciunas had 23 points and 15 rebounds in Thursday's 117-100 win over Chicago as Toronto overcame a rocky season debut for All-Star guard DeMar DeRozan, who finished with 11 points on 2-of-9 shooting. The 76ers faltered down the stretch in a 102-92 home loss to the Boston Celtics on Friday to fall to 0-2 on the young season. Big man Joel Embiid struggled to produce 11 points on 4-of-16 shooting - including 0-for-6 from 3-point range - and will sit this one out as the team continues to monitor his workload following multiple lower-body injuries in his brief NBA career. Rookie Ben Simmons has consecutive double-doubles to begin the season for Philadelphia but is 11-for-26 from the floor.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN Philadelphia, Sportsnet One (Toronto)

ABOUT THE 76ERS (0-2): Inconsistency was an issue for Philadelphia on Friday, with veteran starters Jerryd Bayless and JJ Redick combining to make 8-of-13 3-pointers with zero turnovers while most of the young stars struggled to keep up. Embiid, Simmons, top pick Markelle Fultz and reserve forward Dario Saric shot a collective 30.4 percent from the floor, missed all 10 of their 3-point attempts and turned the ball over 13 times. Big man Jahlil Okafor (illness) has yet to see any action this season but is expected to get some minutes Saturday night with Embiid sidelined.

ABOUT THE RAPTORS (1-0): While DeRozan struggled and star point guard Kyle Lowry (12 points) was not a major factor, Toronto rode its second unit to victory, particularly forward C.J. Miles (22 points) and guard Delon Wright (13). "It gives them a good identity with the second unit," coach Dwane Casey told reporters. "And that's what we want to do is develop those guys and make sure they establish that and maintain it." Miles has made 17-of-28 3-pointers over his last three games going back to preseason.

                  BUZZER BEATERS

                  1. Lowry averaged 22.7 points while making 14-of-24 3-pointers in three games against Philadelphia last season.

                  2. Simmons is averaging 14.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and five assists through his first two games.

                  3. Toronto averaged 119.3 points in its three wins against Philadelphia last season.

                  PREDICTION: Raptors 116, 76ers 106

                      Preview: Pistons at Knicks

                      Gracenote
                      Oct 21, 2017

Despite splitting their first two games of the season, the Detroit Pistons are showing some signs they might be poised to improve upon last year's 37-45 campaign. The Pistons continue a stretch of three games in four days Saturday when they visit Madison Square Garden to meet the New York Knicks to wrap up a two-game road trip.

Detroit got its season started off on the right foot in its new downtown home - Little Caesars Arena - with a 102-90 victory over Charlotte on Wednesday, committing only eight turnovers while riding the hot shooting of Tobias Harris. The Pistons followed that effort by pushing Washington to the limit on the road, climbing all the way back from a 15-point deficit early in the fourth quarter before settling for a 115-111 loss to the Wizards. Kristaps Porzingis more than held his own against former teammate Carmelo Anthony with 31 points and 12 rebounds, but Enes Kanter (10) was the only other Knick who reached double figures in Thursday's 105-84 setback in Oklahoma City to the Thunder. New York battled Oklahoma City to a draw on the boards (41-41) but shot 36 percent from the field after a torrid first quarter and ended up committing 26 turnovers.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE PISTONS (1-1): Andre Drummond was well on his way to a double-double against Washington after entering the break with nine points and 10 rebounds, but he was unable to assist the Pistons during their late rally after he picked up three fouls over a 46-second span to disqualify himself late in the third quarter. While Drummond fell just short of reaching double figures, Detroit received at least 10 points from seven players, including a team-high 21 from Reggie Jackson and 20 from Avery Bradley. Henry Ellenson did not play Friday after scoring 13 points over 16 minutes in the opener, while first-round rook Luke Kennard tallied all 11 of his points in the second quarter after not playing Wednesday.

ABOUT THE KNICKS (0-1): Even though it was just one game, Porzingis appears to have embraced being the clear top option for New York, as his 25 field-goal attempts from the field were two more than his previous career high and 10 more than he averaged last season (14.9). “I feel good physically. I feel stronger. I feel more comfortable in the paint. I’ll try to stay aggressive and stay in the paint. That’s going to bring me easy points. I’ll try to do whatever I can offensively to help the team," Porzingis told reporters. First-round draft pick Frank Ntilikina, who missed both of his shots and was held scoreless over eight minutes in his NBA debut Thursday, is questionable for Saturday after spraining his left ankle in practice Friday.

                      BUZZER BEATERS

                      1. After shooting 0-for-13 from the floor Wednesday, Pistons F Stanley Johnson sank all three of his field-goal attempts - including a 3-pointer - on Friday.

                      2. The Knicks' 26 turnovers in the opener matched their most in a game since Dec. 3, 2008.

                      3. Detroit G Langston Galloway, who scored 16 points off the bench in the opener, played the first two years of his career with New York from 2014-16.

                      PREDICTION: Pistons 107, Knicks 94

                          Preview: Pacers at Heat

                          Gracenote
                          Oct 21, 2017

The Miami Heat are expected to be without center Hassan Whiteside, who led the league in rebounding last season, when they open a six-game homestand Saturday night against the revamped Indiana Pacers. Whiteside registered 26 points and 22 boards in the season-opening 116-109 loss at Orlando, but suffered a bruised left knee during a collision with Magic center Nikola Vucevic.

“He’s doing treatment and he’s feeling better,” said Miami coach Erik Spoelstra, whose team was outrebounded against Orlando to lose a season opener for the first time in seven years. “We’ll just have to go from there.” The Heat will have to lean more on guard Goran Dragic, who posted 17 points and six assists in the opener, and get a big effort defensively against an Indiana team that scored 140 points in its season debut before struggling Friday. The Pacers are also expected to be without a key player as center Myles Turner missed Friday’s 114-96 home setback against Portland with a concussion and a sore neck after recording 21 points to go along with 14 boards in the season-opening win over Brooklyn. Indiana, which begins a three-game road trip, shot 44.9 percent from the field in the loss after draining 52 percent on Wednesday night.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN Indiana, FSN Sun (Miami)

ABOUT THE PACERS (1-1): Turner’s absence left a void inside, but 6-10 rookie T.J. Leaf came off the bench to pour in 17 points in 19 minutes after going scoreless in his career debut on 0-for-1 shooting. Victor Oladipo, acquired from Oklahoma City in the Paul George trade, also finished with 17 points on Friday but was held to 5-of-17 from the field while second-year pro Domantas Sabonis scored three following a 16-point effort against Brooklyn. Point guard Darren Collison, who was the other key pickup in the offseason, averaged 17.5 points and 7.5 assists in his first two games.

ABOUT THE HEAT (0-1): Newcomer Kelly Olynyk is likely to take Whiteside’s spot at center after the former Boston Celtic scored 10 points in his Miami debut and perhaps there will be a few more minutes for rookie big man Bam Adebayo up front. Dion Waiters scored 15 against Orlando on Wednesday despite reportedly being bothered by an ankle injury that kept him out of several games last season, but he is likely to be in the lineup against the Pacers. Former Duke standout Justise Winslow scored 10 points off the bench in the opener after missing all but 18 games last season due to injury.

                          BUZZER BEATERS

                          1. The Pacers have drained just 13 of their 52 attempts from 3-point range in the first two contests.

                          2. Miami PF James Johnson had 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting and eight assists in 19 minutes off the bench Wednesday.

                          3. The Heat has won four of the last five meetings, but lost the last matchup at Indiana 102-98 last March.

                          PREDICTION: Pacers 110, Heat 98

                              Preview: Magic at Cavaliers

                              Gracenote
                              Oct 21, 2017

The Cleveland Cavaliers are seeking to defeat the visiting Orlando Magic for the 18th consecutive time when the teams square off Saturday. Cleveland's streak is the longest current run of success in any NBA head-to-head series with Orlando's last victory over the Cavaliers occurring Nov. 23, 2012.

The Cavaliers have recorded consecutive solid victories to open the season and received 24 points and eight assists from forward LeBron James in Friday's impressive 116-97 road win over the Milwaukee Bucks. "(We) have seven new guys and we're still working on our lineups and things of that nature," said James afterward, "so to come in on their home floor where they play pretty well, it's a big win for us." Orlando dropped a 126-121 decision to the host Brooklyn Nets on Friday as power forward Aaron Gordon missed the game with a sprained left ankle and point guard Elfrid Payton exited in the second quarter with a hamstring injury. Magic center Nikola Vucevic established career highs of 41 points and six 3-pointers while carrying the team against the Nets.

                              TV:
8 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Orlando), FSN Ohio (Cleveland)

ABOUT THE MAGIC (1-1): Vucevic was an incredible 17-of-22 from the field against the Nets and is averaging 30 points and 12.5 rebounds through two games. "I can't imagine him having a better game than he did," Orlando coach Frank Vogel said afterward. "His shot making was ridiculous." Gordon has a chance at returning after a one-game absence but Payton might not be available and Vogel said the Magic would wait to see how he feels Saturday before determining his status.

                              ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (2-0):
The Cleveland bench is filled with backcourt players and wings who are former NBA starters and Friday was 36-year-old Kyle Korver's turn to shine. Korver knocked down 5-of-6 3-point attempts while scoring 17 points and resembling the form that has seen him make 2,054 long-range shots in his 15-year career. Kevin Love's move to center has started well as he is averaging 16 points and 11.5 rebounds with back-to-back double-doubles but new point guard Derrick Rose injured an ankle Friday and will likely sit out versus the Magic.

                              BUZZER BEATERS

                              1. The Cavaliers won last season's three meetings by an average of 12.7 points.

                              2. Cleveland SG Dwyane Wade is averaging six points on 5-of-17 shooting in his first two games with the team.

                              3. Orlando PF Jonathan Isaac, the sixth overall pick of June's draft, started in place of Gordon and had nine points but corralled only one rebound in 23 minutes.

                              PREDICTION: Cavaliers 123, Magic 103
