    Preview: Maple Leafs at Senators

    Gracenote
    Oct 20, 2017

This season's first Battle of Ontario has some added juice with the high-powered Toronto Maple Leafs set to bring the league's top-ranked offense into Saturday night's clash against the host Ottawa Senators. The Maple Leafs, led by 2016 No. 1 overall draft pick Auston Matthews, are averaging nearly five goals per game during their 6-1-0 start.

Toronto extended its winning streak to three games by taking a back-to-back against Washington and Detroit, scoring four goals on its first five shots in Wednesday's 6-3 victory over the Red Wings. “It’s great to see. (But) it’s still October," Maple Leafs center Nazem Kadri told reporters. "We can’t get too ahead of ourselves here. There are still a lot of good teams we have to play and it’s not going to be this loose for long.” The Senators are allowing the third-fewest goals in the league (2.29 per game) entering Friday and have lost just once in regulation, but they have yet to win at home in four games (0-1-3). Ottawa has owned the series against its provincial rival over the past two seasons, winning seven of the eight matchups.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, CBC, TVA, CITY

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (6-1-0): One of the hot topics in Toronto on Friday was a prominent betting website listing the Maple Leafs as favorites to win the Stanley Cup. “All that stuff is fluff,” Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock told reporters. “It’s hard to win the Cup. It’s darn near impossible. Let’s not worry about that -let’s try to get in the playoffs. Let’s do that by winning the game in Ottawa." Matthews, who leads the Maple Leafs with six goals and 10 points, scored four times and added three assists in four games versus Ottawa last season.

ABOUT THE SENATORS (3-1-3): The inability to win at home is baffling for Ottawa, which carried a two-goal lead into the third period against New Jersey on Thursday - only to wind up losing in overtime. "We've got to work on protecting leads," said center Kyle Turris, who leads the team with eight points. "We don't want to lose one-goal leads, never mind two-goal leads." Special teams continue to be productive for the Senators, who have snuffed out 20 of 21 penalties overall and are 7-for-21 on the power play in the past four games.

    OVERTIME

    1. Senators G Craig Anderson won both starts versus Toronto last season despite allowing seven goals.

    2. Maple Leafs G Frederik Andersen has yielded five goals in winning his three road starts.

    3. Senators F Zack Smith is expected to miss a week and D Mark Borowiecki will sit out his second straight game, both with upper-body injuries.

PREDICTION: Maple Leafs 4, Senators 2

        Preview: Panthers at Capitals

        Gracenote
        Oct 21, 2017

One day after becoming the first player in the league to reach double figures in goals, captain Alex Ovechkin looks to continue his success against Florida when the Washington Capitals host the Panthers on Saturday. Ovechkin increased his total to 10 goals when he scored in overtime to beat Detroit 4-3 on Friday and has torched the Panthers for 35 goals and 38 assists in 57 career meetings.

The Capitals snapped a two-game slide with the victory as T.J. Oshie scored on the power play with 1:01 remaining in regulation before Ovechkin cashed in during a man advantage 1:56 into the extra session. Washington looks to add another victory before flying to Western Canada for a three-game road trip and likely will face James Reimer, who replaced Roberto Luongo after the veteran suffered an apparent hand injury in Florida’s 4-3 home loss to Pittsburgh on Friday. The Panthers have been productive on the offensive end but are having a difficult time keeping the puck out of their net, averaging four goals allowed in their first six games. One positive out of the loss for Florida, which has dropped three straight, was the first goal of the season from 2013 second-overall pick Aleksander Barkov.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN, NBCSN Washington

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (2-4-0): Special teams have been a major problem for Florida in the first half-dozen games, as it is 4-for-26 with the man advantage and has allowed eight power-play goals - three in Friday’s setback. Jonathan Huberdeau recorded an assist on Friday to take over the team lead with six points and newcomer Radim Vrbata notched his team-leading fifth assist but still is looking for his first goal. Reimer is 1-2-0 with an .880 save percentage and 4.11 goals-against average in three appearances (two starts) this season after going 18-16-5 in 2016-17.

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (4-3-1): Andre Burakovsky was demoted from the top two lines and responded with his first goal of the season along with an assist on Friday while playing primarily with Brett Connolly and Lars Eller. Nicklas Backstrom and Evgeny Kuznetsov each notched an assist in the win at Detroit and are tied for the team lead with 12 points - one better than Ovechkin, who registered seven shots on Friday. Braden Holtby was in net for the victory, and that is expected to give the Saturday start to backup Philipp Grubauer, who has struggled this season (0-1-1, .844 save percentage).

        OVERTIME

        1. Oshie, who has registered nine points in his first eight games, is slated to play in his 600th NHL contest on Saturday.

        2. Florida D MacKenzie Weegar scored his first NHL goal on Friday in his season debut and fourth career game.

        3. The Panthers have won three of the last five meetings, including a 2-0 triumph at Washington on April 9 in the last matchup.

        PREDICTION: Capitals 5, Panthers 2

            Preview: Hurricanes at Stars

            Gracenote
            Oct 20, 2017

The Carolina Hurricanes look to finish a difficult early-season road trip with a winning record when they visit the surging Dallas Stars on Saturday night. The Hurricanes knocked off Calgary 2-1 on Thursday to gain a point for the fourth time in five games to open the season after splitting the first two contests on the trip with a loss at Winnipeg and an impressive victory at Edmonton.

“There are a lot of good things we can build on from this game,” Carolina coach Bill Peters told reporters after limiting Calgary to 26 shots and one power-play chance Thursday. “We can be stifling when we play the right way.” The Hurricanes will need that type of effort against the Stars, who have posted 11 goals in three consecutive victories with their talented top line taking the lead. Tyler Seguin (three goals), Jamie Benn (two) and Alexander Radulov have combined for six goals and five assists during the winning streak after Thursday’s 5-4 win at Arizona while defenseman John Klingberg and goaltender Ben Bishop continued their strong play. “I really liked the way our big boys played,” Dallas coach Ken Hitchcock told reporters. “Our top players carried the day, and that’s what you need to win on the road.”

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN Carolinas, FSN Southwest Plus (Dallas)

ABOUT THE HURRICANES (3-1-1): Scott Darling has warmed to the task in his first season as a No. 1 goalie after coming over from Chicago in an offseason trade and signing a four-year, $16.6 million contract. “He was outstanding,” Peters said of Darling after he turned aside 25 shots Thursday. “He’s only going to get better as he gets used to the communication with our D and the way we play and the way we defend.” Justin Williams scored his first goal in his second stint with Carolina on Thursday to take over the team lead in points (five) while Jeff Skinner notched his third tally of the campaign.

ABOUT THE STARS (4-3-0): Dallas entered play Friday with the third best penalty-killing percentage (88.9) in the league, including 10-for-10 effort during the winning streak, after owning the NHL’s worst mark last season (73.9). Klingberg’s seven points match Benn and Seguin for the team lead after registering a pair of assists in Thursday’s victory and boasts a plus-3 rating during the win streak. Bishop, a two-time Vezina Trophy finalist who was signed as a free agent in the offseason, has won four of his five decisions and sports a .929 save percentage and 1.93 goals-against average in six contests.

            OVERTIME

            1. The Stars have won five straight meetings with the Hurricanes, outscoring them 8-2 in a pair last season.

            2. Carolina F Elias Lindholm, who has three points and a plus-3 rating in the early going, needs two assists to reach 100 in his career.

            3. Seguin led the NHL in shots (42) through Thursday’s games and has recorded two game-winning goals.

                Preview: Blackhawks at Coyotes

                Gracenote
                Oct 21, 2017

The Chicago Blackhawks have cooled off after a fast start but have a good chance to get back on track when they visit the an opponent they have dominated of late. The Blackhawks have dropped two in a row and four of six entering Saturday's road contest against the skidding Arizona Coyotes, who are the only team in the league that has yet to record a victory.

Chicago opened the season by pumping in 15 goals in beating up Metropolitan Division heavyweights Pittsburgh and Columbus, but it has netted 12 regulation tallies in six games since. The Blackhawks have allowed more than 40 shots three times in their last six games and rank last in the league with an average of 36.8 surrendered. Any struggles pale in comparison to those of the Coyotes, who secured their lone point in an overtime loss to expansion Vegas in the second game of the season. "We just gotta find a way to outscore the other team one time just to try to relieve the pressure of not getting a win," Arizona's Derek Stepan told reporters. "It's kind of created a little bit of a monster. I want nothing more than this group to find a way to get a win on Saturday."

TV: 9 p.m. ET, NBCSN Chicago, FSN Arizona Plus

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (4-2-2): Chicago has had plenty of opportunities on the power play, going 6-for-39 on the season and 2-for-18 over its last three games after failing to convert on five chances - including a two-man advantage - in Tuesday's 2-1 overtime loss to Edmonton. “The 5-on-3, we had some great looks around the net,” coach Joel Quenneville told reporters. “A lot of loose pucks that we just didn’t find the handle, we’re not anticipating or sniffing them out around the net." Defenseman Duncan Keith has notched an assist in three straight games.

ABOUT THE COYOTES (0-6-1): One positive in Thursday's 5-4 loss to Dallas was the performance of rookie Clayton Keller, who scored twice and assisted on another tally to boost his team-high totals to five goals and seven points. Defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson, who played 10 seasons and won three Stanley Cups with Chicago, will face his former team for the first time. "It's going to be a special game," Hjalmarsson told reporters. "It's going to be a little weird in the beginning. ... It's all new and I'm looking forward to the game."

                OVERTIME

                1. Coyotes G Adin Hill has started the last two games with Antti Raanta hurt, but coach Rick Tocchet was undecided on Saturday's netminder.

                2. The Blackhawks have won their last seven contests against the Coyotes, including their past four visits to Arizona.

                3. Stepan, an offseason acquisition from the New York Rangers, scored his first two goals of the season Thursday.

                PREDICTION: Blackhawks 4, Coyotes 3

Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach Free Pick CFB Game #357 Maryland Terrapins (+) @ Wisconsin Badgers @ Noon ET - It is homecoming weekend in Madison and the Badgers, make no mistake about it, are a very good football team. However, one thing that has benefited Wisconsin this season is a rather weak schedule. As it stands now, the Badgers have not played a single team that currently has a winning record. I am well aware of the fact that Maryland has had injuries at the QB position and certainly the Terrapins aren't going to march into Madison and get an upset win. However, I do like the Terps to keep this one closer than many are expecting. Road wins at Texas and Minnesota help give Maryland some added confidence heading into this one. Yes the Terrapins got annihilated at Ohio State recently but just the fact that the Terps faced a powerhouse like the Buckeyes gives them an edge over a Badgers team that has truly faced an easy schedule this season. Look for the Terrapins to improve to 8-4 ATS when they are entering a game off of 2 or more consecutive SU losses. Free Pick on MARYLAND

The Oilers are in a tough spot here. They just upset the Blackhawks, 2-1 in overtime on the road Thursday. Now they have to play here at an early start time. So it's almost like a back-to-back situation. It's especially rough for a visiting Western Conference team to play a day game in an Eastern time zone.

Philadelphia has won eight of its last 10 home games. The Flyers, though, were shut out, 1-0, by Nashville in their last home game two days ago.

However, the Flyers had won their two previous home games this season in convincing fashion destroying the Capitals, 8-2, and Panthers, 5-1.

Edmonton goalie Cam Talbot hasn't been real sharp this season.

Syracuse Orange vs Miami Hurricanes Free Pick October 21, 2017.

Many expect Syracuse to suffer a let down coming off a dramatic upset win over Clemson last Friday, and perhaps that's why the line has been bet up several points since opening at +14.5. They will play at Miami, and the Hurricanes are undefeated and ranked in the Top 10. I wasn't exactly surprised by the Orange beating Clemson, in fact I bet on it. This team is for real, with a clutch quarterback surrounded by talent and speed, and a defense that has come a long way since last season. We've already seen them cover against Top 25 teams on the road at NC State and LSU. They haven't lost by double-digits in any of their games this season, and they are 5-0 ATS versus teams with a winning record. Eric Dungey has thrown for over 2000 yards and 12 TDs so far this season, and I think he's more than capable of keeping the Orange within two TDs at Miami.

                                Take SYR.
