Fresh off its first win over a top-five ranked team in 21 years, Arizona State hits the road Saturday to face Utah. Late last Saturday night, the Sun Devils found the end zone on their opening possession against No. 4 Washington, and the defense took it from there in a stunning 13-7 victory over the visiting Huskies.


And now with games against Utah and Pac-12 South Division-leading USC up next, Arizona State coach Todd Graham knows there’s no time for any kind of letdown. “We have a veteran team,” Graham said in his weekly news conference Monday. “The guys have been here awhile, and they know it doesn’t matter what you do the last week. You’ve got the next week, and we’re going to Utah which is one of the more challenging places to play in our league.” The Utes, meanwhile have suffered close losses to Stanford (23-20) and USC (28-27) after a 4-0 start, but recent conference history says there is still hope in Salt Lake City despite a 1-2 Pac-12 start. “(Contending for the South title) is not out of the question,” Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said at his Monday news conference. “… I don’t think there will be an outright champion with two losses and everyone else with three or more, but there could be a (two-loss) co-champion with tiebreakers (coming into play).”

ABOUT ARIZONA STATE (3-3, 2-1 Pac-12): The Sun Devils entered last Saturday’s game having surrendered 30 or more points in 11 straight outings, but held the high-powered Huskies to a fourth-quarter TD and 230 total yards while allowing only 3-of-14 third-down conversions. Manny Wilkins completed 29-of-41 passes for 245 yards in the contest and ranks fourth in the conference in total offense with 289.8 yards per outing. Kalen Ballage scored Arizona State’s only TD against the Huskies but finished with only 17 yards on nine carries and is averaging 50.5 yards per game and 3.8 per carry.

ABOUT UTAH (4-2, 1-2): The Utes squandered a 21-7 halftime lead last Saturday against USC and ultimately fell short when quarterback Troy Williams was stopped short on a two-point conversion scramble with 42 seconds remaining. Williams has gone 36-of-66 for 500 yards, two TDs and three interceptions while rushing for 32 yards and a score in starting the last two games in place of injured sophomore starter Tyler Huntley, and will rely heavily again on running back Zack Moss, who gashed USC for a career-high 141 yards on 20 carries. Led by linebacker Sunia Tauteoli (7.0 tackles, 1.25 tackles for loss per game), the Utah defense is surrendering the second-fewest points (20.0) and third-fewest yards (350.3) in the conference.

Central Florida's nationally-ranked defense will be put to the test on Saturday when the No. 20 Knights make their first ever visit to Navy to face the Midshipmen in an American Athletic Conference contest. Add in the fact that it's homecoming for Navy and UCF will face its biggest challenge of the season in order to keep its perfect record intact.

The Knights enter the weekend allowing 16.8 points per game, ranked 14th in the country, and 110.2 yards per game rushing - 19th best in the nation. But UCF has yet to face an offense like Navy, which features the triple-option attack and averages an FBS-most 397.5 yards rushing per game - led by junior quarterback Zach Abey, who has already run for 1,016 this season. To help the UCF defense prepare, head coach Scott Frost - who ran an option offense with Nebraska in the late 1990s - took snaps with the scout team this week. "I love option football. I lived it,” Frost said during his weekly press conference. “I feel like option quarterbacks now are kind of like giant pandas; they only exist in zoos and military academies. ... You’ve got to have a tough kid that’s smart under center, and I think Navy has that.''

ABOUT CENTRAL FLORIDA (5-0, 3-0 AAC): The offense continues to roll on for the Knights, who lead the nation in scoring at 50.6 points per game after averaging just 28.8 a season ago. The Knights have reached the 600-yard mark on offense twice in the last three weeks, having picked up 500 or more in three consecutive weeks for the first time since 1998. Quarterback McKenzie Milton leads the offensive charge, ranked second in the country in passing efficiency (203.6) and fourth in passing yards per completion (16.54).

ABOUT NAVY (5-1, 3-1): The Midshipmen hope to rebound from the first loss of the season after turning in an uncharacteristic performance in a 30-27 setback at Memphis - just the third defeat in 20 contests since joining the AAC. If Miami (Fla.) had any thoughts of looking past Syracuse, those surely disappeared last weekend. The seventh-ranked Hurricanes hope to avoid the upset at the hands of the visiting Orange when the ACC foes square off Saturday.

Syracuse defeated No. 2 Clemson, the defending national champion, in its last outing behind three touchdown passes from Eric Dungey. "There's two ways to handle it," coach Dino Babers said earlier this week. "You can bring them and say, 'Forget about that. Now we need to move on to the next game.' But in my heart, I just feel this is too big. You've got to let this wave ride out. I was born in Hawaii. You've got to ride this wave." Babers now hopes his team can re-focus in time to face the undefeated Hurricanes, who escaped last week's date with Georgia Tech with a 25-24 triumph. "Just another day in paradise," Miami coach Mark Richt quipped after his team outscored Georgia Tech 9-0 in the fourth. "That's how we roll."

ABOUT SYRACUSE (4-3, 2-1 ACC): The Orange are aiming to knock off consecutive top 10 opponents for the first time in school history behind Dungey, who ranks fifth in the nation in completions per game (26.9), and Steve Ishmael, who leads the nation in receptions (62). Ishmael has scored a touchdown in four straight games, although he is averaging 5.7 catches over the last three outings after averaging 11.3 catches in the first four contests. Dungey leads the team in rushing (386 yards) and has eight of the team's 11 scores on the ground.

ABOUT MIAMI (5-0, 3-0): The Hurricanes have won 10 games in a row dating back to last season, although last week's win was a mini-miracle. Preview: Oregon at UCLA

UCLA will try to beat Oregon for the first time since 2007 when the Bruins host the Ducks at the Rose Bowl on Saturday. Oregon has won six in a row against UCLA, its most recent victory coming in 2014 when eventual Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota threw two touchdowns and ran for two more in a 42-30 win in Pasadena.

The Bruins rank second-to-last among 129 FBS teams in rushing defense at 313 rushing yards surrendered per game, and the Ducks have one of the top ball carriers in the Pac-12 in Royce Freeman. He needs 140 rushing yards to surpass the career school record of 5,082 established by LaMichael James from 2009-11. UCLA has the second-best passing offense in the nation led by quarterback Josh Rosen, whose 2,354 passing yards are third-most in the FBS. He couldn't bail out the Bruins last week at Arizona, throwing for a season-low 219 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions in the 47-30 loss.

ABOUT OREGON (4-3, 1-3 Pac-12): The Ducks have one of the top linebackers in the Pac-12 in sophomore Troy Dye, a Southern California native who led all NCAA freshmen in tackles last season. Dye is tied for fourth in the conference with an average of 8.9 tackles a game and should be tough on a UCLA running game that's already ranked ninth in the Pac-12 at 127.5 yards a game. Another linebacker that needs to be accounted for at all times is junior Jonah Moi, who comes in tied for fifth in the conference with 4.5 sacks and may cause Rosen to hurry some throws.

ABOUT UCLA (3-3, 1-2): Rosen's passing ability has enabled wide receiver Darren Andrews to emerge as one of the top pass catchers in the Pac-12. Andrews has caught 44 passes for 591 yards and seven touchdowns, all of which rank in the top three in the conference. The Bruins lost one of their other top targets when tight end Caleb Wilson sustained a Lisfranc injury to his foot three weeks ago against Colorado, and his replacements against Arizona didn't come close to matching his production.

Bill Snyder's Wildcats come in off back-to-back losses at Texas (40-34 in double-overtime) and last week against then-No. 6 TCU (26-6) with starting quarterback Jesse Ertz on the sideline nursing a knee injury suffered against the Longhorns. Ertz, who averaged 186.0 passing yards and 67.2 rushing yards through the first five games, warmed up before the loss to the visiting Horned Frogs, but was replaced by sophomore Alex Delton who struggled in his first college start, completing just 11-of-29 passes for 146 yards and rushing for 39 yards on 19 carries. "Jesse will be able to play," Snyder said during Monday's weekly Big 12 teleconference. "I don't know when exactly it's going to be. He'll be back on the field." Kansas State has won two of the last five meetings with the Sooners but both of those wins surprisingly came in Norman with Oklahoma blasting the Wildcats 55-0 in the their last meeting in Manhattan.

ABOUT OKLAHOMA (5-1, 2-1 Big 12): The Sooners are coming in off a 29-24 win over Texas in the Red River Showdown in Dallas on Saturday, blowing an early 20-0 lead before quarterback Baker Mayfield hit tight end Mark Andrews for a 59-yard game-winning TD with 6:53 to go. Mayfield, who finished fourth in Heisman Trophy balloting a year ago, has completed 117-of-161 passes for 1,937 yards, 17 touchdowns and one interception while Andrews leads the team with 23 receptions for 459 yards (20.0 avg.) and three touchdowns. Trey Sermon leads OU in rushing (81 carries, 469 yards, 3 TDs) and coach Lincoln Riley hinted that explosive sophomore starter Abdul Adams, who is averaging 10.6 yards per carry and had a school-record 99-yard touchdown run in a wild 49-41 win at Baylor, could return this week from an ankle injury suffered in a Oct. 7 loss to Iowa State.

ABOUT KANSAS STATE (3-3, 1-2): Ertz ranks second in the nation in yards per completion (16.9) and leads the team in rushing with 336 yards so his absence would be a big one if he can't return this week. The Wildcats rank 15th in the nation in turnover margin (plus-6) and 39th in scoring defense (21.0) and are led by linebacker Trent Tanking, who is seventh in the Big 12 with 50 tackles, and All-Big 12 tackle Will Geary, who has a team-best 6.5 tackles for loss and three sacks. The big question is how well the secondary, led by Kendall Adams (two interceptions, one fumble return for TD) but ranked just 88th nationally allowing 238.2 yards per game, holds up against Mayfield and Co.

Kentucky has struggled against a variety of non-Power 5 teams this season, but the bottom line is the Wildcats are 5-1 and squarely in the SEC East race heading into Saturday’s road game against Mississippi State. The Wildcats aim to reach 6-1 for the second time in 40 years, and head coach Mark Stoops is not apologizing for his team surviving against the likes of Missouri, Eastern Michigan and Eastern Kentucky, three teams with a combined record of 4-14.

“Finding ways to win, and putting yourself in a position to win football games is bottom line, and I think this team has done that very well,” Stoops told reporters Monday. Mississippi State’s once-promising season took a sharp turn south after being outscored 80-13 in losses to Alabama and Georgia, but the Bulldogs rebounded in beating BYU last week. Mississippi State comes into this matchup averaging 261.7 rushing yards per game (third in the SEC), a strength that will be challenged by a Kentucky defense allowing just 97.2 yards on the ground (also third in the league). “They attack you from a lot of different directions,” Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen told reporters Monday. “They pose some unique challenges.”

Cincinnati will try to snap a four-game losing streak when its hosts SMU in an American Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon. First-year coach Luke Fickell said he has seen improvements and positives even if the results aren't on the scoreboard.

"I couldn't say that two weeks ago (after a 51-23 loss to Central Florida) but after this past week (a 33-3 loss to South Florida) I could tell," Fickell told reporters. "To a lot of the people out there, they see 33-3 and it's hard to see that it's any closer (to being competitive)." The Bearcats have been outscored 164-79 during the losing streak and haven't held a lead in any of those games. Cincinnati's five losses are against teams with a combined 26-3 record and SMU is another tough test. The Mustangs, who were off last week, are second in the AAC in scoring offense (43.8 points) and total offense (506.7 yards).
