    Preview: Pacers at Thunder

    Gracenote
    Oct 25, 2017

Paul George faces his former organization for the first time since his acrimonious departure when the Oklahoma City Thunder host the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday. George was a four-time All-Star in his seven seasons with the Pacers but requested a trade during the summer and now is teammates with Russell Westbrook and Carmelo Anthony in Oklahoma City.

George reflected on his departure from the Pacers - he is scheduled to be a free agent following this season - and the 6-9 forward admitted he could have handled the situation smoother. "Obviously, I'm human. Things could have been done a lot better," George told the Indianapolis Star on Tuesday. "The process, that whole ordeal, could have been done a lot better. I'll share some of that responsibility. But at the end of the day, I did what was best for myself, what was best for my family. I had to move on. It was the right decision for myself." Indiana acquired guard Victor Oladipo and post player Domantas Sabonis in the deal, and the former is thriving with back-to-back 28-point efforts - including 11-of-16 shooting in Tuesday's 130-107 rout of Minnesota. The Pacers will be without center Myles Turner (concussion/neck) for the fourth straight game.

    TV:
8 p.m. ET, FSN Indiana, FSN Oklahoma

ABOUT THE PACERS (2-2): Oladipo is averaging 23.8 points with three 20-point performances and is being asked to score more than at any time in his previous four NBA seasons. He had plenty of offensive help on Tuesday as six players scored in double digits, and the team set a franchise record by shooting 66.7 percent from the field. "If you move the ball as they did (Tuesday night), guys are going to have wide-open looks," coach Nate McMillan told reporters. "No one was really holding the ball - they were getting it out to the open guy. We took a lot of uncontested shots because of the good ball movement."

    ABOUT THE THUNDER (1-2):
George is settling in with Oklahoma City, as he is averaging 21.3 points in three games despite shooting just 37.1 percent. Returning to play the Pacers in Indianapolis on Dec. 13 will be the true emotional test for George, but he certainly is going to have to manage his feelings upon seeing his former team for the first time as an opposing player. "I'm sure there's things that he's going through, but he's a pro, and he'll handle things how he sees fit to handle them," coach Billy Donovan told reporters. "I think he'll be fine. I didn't know him at all (before the trade). After the trade happened, I went and visited with him. Great guy, very bright, very humble, really good person. Fit in very, very well with our guys."

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. The Pacers won both of last season's meetings and have prevailed in four of the last five.

    2. Westbrook, the reigning NBA MVP, is averaging 19.3 points, 11.7 assists and 9.3 rebounds through three games.

    3. Indiana PG Darren Collison contributed 15 points and 16 assists against Minnesota, the latter being four shy of his career best.

    PREDICTION: Thunder 112, Pacers 105

        Preview: Grizzlies at Mavericks

        Gracenote
        Oct 24, 2017

The Dallas Mavericks are the lone remaining winless team in the Western Conference and have the misfortune of going up against one of the few teams that remains undefeated when they host the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday in the first of a back-to-back, home-and-home set. The Mavericks are being outscored by an average of 14.3 points and were crushed 133-103 at home by the defending champion Golden State Warriors on Monday.

Dallas, which travels to Memphis on Thursday for the start of a stretch with six of nine on the road, allowed 40 points in the first quarter and 68 in the second half on Monday. “We got hit early, and then it always takes us a little bit to engage in the fight,” Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki told reporters. “It’s a little too late in every half. They hit us early, and then in the second half we couldn’t really recover any more." The Grizzlies showed off their defensive might by holding the explosive Houston Rockets to 14 fourth-quarter points in a 98-90 win on Monday and entered play Tuesday second in the NBA in opponent's field-goal percentage at 39.6. "We competed better on the ball, and more into the ball," Memphis center Marc Gasol explained to reporters. "We were a little more proactive defensively, and that way everybody can see from behind what might happen on the ball. We were a little more physical too and that helped a lot."

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Memphis), FS Southwest (Dallas)

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (3-0): Memphis already knocked off two of the top three teams in the West from last season (Golden State and Houston) and prides itself on doing the little things to win games. "We’re a team that’s built like we say all the time, we’re a team that grinds," point guard Mike Conley told reporters. "We’re a team that’s going to try to win all 50-50 balls and out muscle you and out hustle you and try to give ourselves the best chance to win." It helps that the Grizzlies are also a team that has Gasol in the middle, and the star center is averaging 24.7 points, 10 rebounds and 2.3 blocks.

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (0-4): Dallas is counting on rookie point guard Dennis Smith Jr. to shoulder a big load this season, and he struggled on Monday in his return from a two-game absence due to a knee injury. The 19-year-old went 3-of-11 from the field and was limited to one assist in 30 minutes while going up against two-time MVP Stephen Curry. “Well, there’s a lot of learning that’s going to happen in a very short period of time," Mavericks coach Rick Carlise told reporters of Smith. "And this is as challenging a situation a rookie point guard is going to be put in two games into his career. ... I thought he did a lot of good things. Stats aren’t great, but he created a lot of problems at a lot of key points in the game when we were in the game. He’s just going to keep learning, and we’re going to support him.”

        BUZZER BEATERS

        1. Memphis SF James Ennis III is 12-of-16 from the floor while averaging 10.7 points.

        2. Dallas SG Seth Curry (stress reaction) took shots at practice on Tuesday but is unlikely to make his season debut on Wednesday.

        3. The Southwest Division rivals split four games last season, with each team grabbing one road win.

        PREDICTION: Grizzlies 105, Mavericks 92

            Preview: Jazz at Suns

            Gracenote
            Oct 25, 2017

The Phoenix Suns are an organization in turmoil, but aim to win their second consecutive game when they host the Utah Jazz on Wednesday. Coach Earl Watson was fired after three defeats to open the season and disgruntled guard Eric Bledsoe is no longer part of the team, but some joy was found when Phoenix posted a 117-115 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Monday.

The Suns are trying to find a taker for Bledsoe while interim coach Jay Triano is promising to lead with a hard-nosed style designed to help young players improve. "That's what we need," standout shooting guard Devin Booker told reporters. "We need accountability. We have a lot of young guys on the team, so we need to get rid of those bad habits early. We need to know the consequences." Utah dropped a 102-84 decision to the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday in the opener of a road back-to-back as the game got away when the Jazz were outscored 33-15 in the third quarter. "We had a tough time scoring, that's the bottom line," Utah coach Quin Snyder said afterward. "When that happens it puts a lot of pressure on your defense."

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Utah), Prime Ticket (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE JAZZ (2-2): Point guard Ricky Rubio is settling in with his new team and has scored in double digits in each of the past three games, and has recorded 10 assists twice in four contests this season. "He's running our team," Snyder said after Tuesday's defeat. "I like how aggressive he's being offensively. He's doing a heck of a job. He's doing everything we asked. I think he's going to keep getting better as a player." Rookie guard Donovan Mitchell scored a team-best 19 points against the Clippers after tallying two points on 1-of-7 shooting in each of the previous two games.

ABOUT THE SUNS (1-3): The biggest beneficiary of Bledsoe's banishment was 27-year-old journeyman Mike James, who made his first career start against Sacramento and scored 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting - including the go-ahead basket with 14.8 seconds to play. James is averaging 13.3 points through his first four NBA games after starring overseas the past five seasons while playing for clubs in Croatia, Israel, Italy, Spain and Greece. "I think the one thing Mike has is experience playing basketball in crazy environments," Triano told reporters. "Playing in that Greek league is no joke. Games go down to the wire and they're throwing stuff at you and there's smoke bombs going off in the crowd. It's a passionate place to play and he's been through this before and (the winning shot) was a pretty cool play."

            BUZZER BEATERS

            1. The Jazz went 3-0 against the Suns last season and have won the past seven meetings.

            2. Utah SG Rodney Hood (calf) is expected to miss his third straight contest.

            3. Phoenix PF Marquese Chriss moved into the starting lineup to score 19 points against Sacramento after he averaged 4.7 over the first three games.

            PREDICTION: Jazz 111, Suns 105

                Preview: Raptors at Warriors

                Gracenote
                Oct 24, 2017

After an uneven start to the season, the Golden State Warriors finally started looking like the defending champions in a 133-103 thrashing of the Dallas Mavericks on Monday. The Warriors will try to maintain that level of play when they host the host the Toronto Raptors in the opener of a three-game homestand on Wednesday.

Golden State dropped two of its first three games and was struggling on the defensive end before holding the Mavericks to 39.6 percent shooting in Monday's win. The Warriors, who led the NBA in defensive field-goal percentage last season, allowed their first three opponents to shoot a combined 47.1 percent from the floor but locked down in the second half in Dallas, when they limited the Mavericks to 41 points while running away with the win. The Raptors promise to be a much tougher team to guard and began their six-game road trip with a 101-97 loss at San Antonio on Monday. Toronto is restructuring its offense a bit this season to encourage more shooting and ball movement, and it struggled to 10-of-37 from 3-point range against the Spurs.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, Sportsnet One (Toronto), NBCS Bay Area (Golden State)

ABOUT THE RAPTORS (2-1): Toronto averaged 122.5 points in winning its first two games but struggled from the field against the Spurs and was quick to point the finger at itself. "I wouldn't say they took anything away from us," Raptors star guard DeMar DeRozan, who led the way with 28 points on 10-of-20 shooting in the loss, told reporters. "We moved the ball, but we just missed a lot of shots. I missed a lot of shots that I normally get to my spot and make." DeRozan is averaging 29 points in the last two games but sat out practice on Tuesday and is day-to-day due to a left thigh bruise suffered on Monday.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (2-2): Golden State was up by enough late in the game on Monday that rookie Jordan Bell felt comfortable tossing the ball off the backboard to himself for an alley-opp on a breakaway, leading to some consternation from the Dallas players and fans. "It caught me off guard," Warriors coach Steve Kerr told reporters of the move. "He's just having fun out there. The main thing he needs to understand is that's going to offend some people." Bell is squeezing his way into some minutes as a backup in the frontcourt and is 9-of-10 from the floor in the first four games.

                BUZZER BEATERS

                1. Curry is 39-of-39 from the free-throw line.

                2. Toronto C Jonas Valanciunas (ankle) was held out of Monday's game and is questionable for Wednesday.

                3. Golden State took each of the last six meetings while averaging 119 points.

                PREDICTION: Warriors 121, Raptors 112

                    Preview: Wizards at Lakers

                    Gracenote
                    Oct 24, 2017

The Washington Wizards look to open 4-0 for the first time in 39 years when they continue a four-game road trip at the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday. The Wizards are the only Eastern Conference team without a loss after beginning their trip with a 109-104 win at Denver, riding 83 points from a starting five that has found an early rhythm.

"That's awesome but we don't care about that," center Marcin Gortat told reporters when asked about the perfect start. "It's got nothing to do with achieving our goal." Bradley Beal scored a team-high 20 points and Gortat had 13 on 6-of-7 shooting to improve his field-goal percentage for the season to 68. Gortat has already made an impact on Wednesday's matchup, responding on Twitter to trash talk from Lakers rookie Lonzo Ball's demonstrative father, LaVar Ball, claiming that Wizards point guard John Wall "will torture" Ball. The 19-year-old Ball was just 3-of-13 from the floor but handed out 13 assists and grabbed eight rebounds in Sunday's 119-112 loss to New Orleans.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, NBCS Washington, Spectrum SportsNet (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE WIZARDS (3-0): Wall's scoring total has fallen in each of the last two games while his assists have risen, topping out at 12 - against just two turnovers - in the win over the Nuggets. Beal has at least 20 points in all three games despite a 3-of-12 showing from 3-point range, while forward Otto Porter Jr. owns averages of nine boards and 3.7 steals to go along with 18.3 points. Washington utilized a 37-13 fourth quarter to steal a win versus the Lakers in March, which gave the team a franchise-record five-game road winning streak against Los Angeles.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (1-2): Ball was one of four starters who failed to score in double figures in the loss to the Pelicans, as backups Jordan Clarkson (24 points) and Kyle Kuzma (20) carried the load. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope had a solid debut with Los Angeles by finishing with 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting. The Lakers on Tuesday announced that they have exercised team options on forwards Brandon Ingram and Larry Nance Jr., who are averaging a combined 26 points this season.

                    BUZZER BEATERS

                    1. Clarkson is averaging 19.7 points in 21.7 minutes.

                    2. Wall entered Tuesday leading the NBA in foul shots made (10) and attempted (11.7).

                    3. Wizards F Jason Smith (shoulder) missed the last two games.

                    PREDICTION: Wizards 118, Lakers 113
