      Preview: Canadiens at Senators

      Gracenote
      Oct 29, 2017

The Montreal Canadiens are beginning to find their way a bit after two wins in the last three contests and look to build off that when they begin a tough four-game road trip Monday night against the rival Ottawa Senators. The Canadiens took a big lead, coughed it up and found another goal to knock off the New York Rangers 5-4 on Saturday while posting at least 40 shots for the fifth time this season.

“When we compete and win battles and when we hound teams like that, we know we’re a tough team to play against,” Montreal right wing Brendan Gallagher told reporters. “We did a good job of that (Saturday). Obviously, we’re not happy we let them back in it, but we were able to stick with it.” The Canadiens will try to win their fourth straight against Senators, who have lost in regulation just once this season despite several key injuries and illnesses. “It’s a tribute to the players dedication and character,” Ottawa coach Guy Boucher told reporters. “… There’s a lot of guys in there playing injured. It’s hard to ask for more.” The Senators own at least a point in five straight contests (2-0-3), but have dropped five of their six games that ended in overtime or a shootout.

      TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, RDS, TSN2, TSN5

ABOUT THE CANADIENS (3-7-1): Former third overall draft pick Alex Galchenyuk has shown signs of life with two goals in his last three games and center Phillip Danault recorded a career-high four points in Saturday’s win. Danault’s big night pulled him within one of Jonathan Drouin (eight points) for the team lead while Gallagher and defenseman Shea Weber are next with six. Former Vezina and Hart Trophy winner Carey Price continues to battle through early-season woes (.883 save percentage), but is 20-8-4 with a 2.37 goals-against average and .919 save percentage lifetime versus Ottawa

ABOUT THE SENATORS (5-1-5): No. 1 center Kyle Turris (eight points, nine games) has missed the last two games with a viral infection and is doubtful for the Montreal matchup, but did skate during practice Sunday. Mark Stone, who is one point from 200 in his career, leads the team with seven goals - four in the last four games - and 12 points while defenseman Erik Karlsson boasts nine assists in six games since returning from foot surgery. Left wing Mike Hoffman has recorded nine points in the last eight contests after being kept off the scoresheet in each of the first three games.

      OVERTIME

      1. Ottawa F Alex Burrows needs two assists to reach 200 and two points to get to 400 in his career.

      2. Montreal captain LW Max Pacioretty has scored in two of the last three games and is one power-play goal from 50 in his career.

      3. Senators G Craig Anderson, who was rested in Friday’s 5-4 shootout loss at New Jersey, owns an .898 career save percentage versus Montreal.

      PREDICTION: Canadiens 5, Senators 3

          Preview: Lightning at Panthers

          Gracenote
          Oct 29, 2017

The Tampa Bay Lightning suffered one difficult loss last time out and return to the site of their only other setback this season Monday night when they visit the Atlantic Division-rival Florida Panthers. The Lightning, who lost for the fifth straight time at Florida on Oct. 7 in a 5-4 decision, saw their nine-game point streak (8-0-1) come to an end Saturday night with a 4-1 defeat against Anaheim.

Tampa Bay captain Steven Stamkos and linemate Nikita Kucherov also were held off the scoresheet for the first time this season after stringing together 11-game point streaks to tie Martin St. Louis for the franchise record to start a campaign. “It’s great when you are on it,” Stamkos told reporters. “It’s not the end of the world, we’ll hopefully start another one next game.” The Lightning gave up a season-high 48 shots in the loss at Florida earlier this month and the Panthers have points in four of five contests (3-1-1) at home in 2017-18. Florida, which is near the bottom of the league in goals against per game (3.50), recorded eight goals in a victory over Anaheim on Thursday before producing 46 shots two days later despite suffering a 3-2 shootout loss to Detroit.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay), FSN Florida

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (9-2-1): Goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy should be back in net after sitting out for the second time this season Saturday, and hopes to tie John Grahame (2005) for the club record by winning his ninth straight decision. Chris Kunitz had the only goal Saturday for his second of the season while his fourth-line mates J.T. Brown and Ryan Callahan matched him with a second point in three contests. Stamkos still leads the league with 21 points and Kucherov owns an NHL-best 12 goals entering Sunday despite managing just four shots combined against Anaheim.

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (4-5-1): Evgenii Dadonov boasts three goals and an assist in the last two games to forge a tie with fellow forwards Jonathan Huberdeau and Vincent Trocheck at 11 points apiece. James Reimer earned the victory against Tampa Bay earlier in the season and has been in net for every game since Roberto Luongo went down with a hand injury, going 2-1-1 in the last four starts. With forwards Jared McCann (lower-body), Colton Sceviour (upper-body) and Connor Brickley (upper-body) out, Chase Balisy made his NHL debut and had two shots in 10:47 on Saturday.

          OVERTIME

          1. Florida C Aleksander Barkov has all of his three goals in the last five games, but managed just one in 16 career contests versus Tampa Bay.

          2. Tampa Bay D Victor Hedman needs one goal to pass Dan Boyle (66) for second on the team’s all-time list for blueliners. He is six behind Pavel Kubina.

          3. The Panthers have outshot the Lightning 84-55 despite only splitting the first two meetings this season.

          PREDICTION: Panthers 4, Lightning 2

              Preview: Kings at Blues

              Gracenote
              Oct 29, 2017

The Los Angeles Kings equaled their best 11-game start to a season in franchise history while the St. Louis Blues remain the NHL's lone undefeated team at home in 2017-18. The Pacific and Central Division leaders vie for early Western Conference supremacy on Monday when the Kings conclude their six-game road trip at Scottrade Center against the Blues.

Tyler Toffoli capped his two-goal performance in exhilarating fashion, scoring off a faceoff with less than a second remaining in overtime as Los Angeles matched the team's 1980-81 start (9-1 with one tie) with a 2-1 win over Boston on Saturday. "You can say it's luck. You can say it's good bounces. But at the same time, we're working hard, we're working for those bounces," said captain Anze Kopitar, who has recorded 41 points (12 goals, 29 assists) in 39 career encounters with St. Louis. Like the Kings, the Blues are off to a flying start and improved to 5-0-1 in their last six on Saturday by winning the opener of their four-game homestand with a 4-1 triumph over Columbus. Fourth-liner Scottie Upshall registered his first three-point performance in nearly three years with a goal and two assists as St. Louis claimed its ninth win in its first 12 games to a season for the sixth time in franchise history and first since 2010-11.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN West (Los Angeles), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

ABOUT THE KINGS (9-1-1): Jonathan Quick has distanced himself from an injury-riddled campaign last season with a stellar start this month, allowing just one goal in his last two games while improving his save percentage (.946) and goals-against average (1.76) in the process. The 31-year-old hasn't been as fortunate versus the Blues, against whom he has dropped 13 of 21 career decisions (8-10-3) despite posting a .919 save percentage and 2.23 GAA. Kopitar notched an assist for his team-leading 13th point on Saturday and is well above pace to surpass his 52-point season of 2016-17.

ABOUT THE BLUES (9-2-1): St. Louis is receiving an offensive jolt from Vladimir Sobotka, who cleaned up a rebound to score his first goal of the season and earn his fourth point (one goal, three assists) in five games late in the first period on Saturday. The 30-year-old Czech, who has collected all eight of his points (one goal, seven assists) in the Blues' nine wins this season, has tallied twice in 13 games since returning to the club from the Kontinental Hockey League toward the end of last season. Jaden Schwartz, who leads the team in goals (seven) and points (15), scored and set up a goal versus Los Angeles last season and has seven points (three goals, four assists) in 12 career encounters with the Kings.

              OVERTIME

              1. St. Louis is a perfect 8-0-0 this season when leading after two periods.

              2. Former Norris Trophy winner D Drew Doughty will play in his 700th career NHL game for Los Angeles on Monday.

              3. The Blues are just 2-for-20 on the power play in their last seven games after scoring with the man advantage in each of their first five contests to begin the season.

              PREDICTION: Blues 2, Kings 1

                  Preview: Stars at Canucks

                  Gracenote
                  Oct 29, 2017

The Dallas Stars hope to translate their solid play, especially on special teams, into more victories as they continue a five-game road trip Monday night against the surprising Vancouver Canucks, who have won four straight. Dallas moved one game over .500 with a 2-1 victory at Calgary on Friday night and was in the top two of the league on both the power play and penalty kill through Saturday’s contests.

“The record (6-5-0) is not near indicative of how we have played, but it is what it is,” Stars coach Ken Hitchcock told the Dallas Morning News. “We’ve had to endure a lot of heartbreak on losses where we have played well. There are a lot of things we like, but there are nuances we have to change.” The Stars, who play at Winnipeg on Thursday, are 1-2-0 on their trip and have earned at least a point in 13 straight (12-0-1) against Vancouver. The Canucks, who did earn a 5-4 overtime victory over Dallas at home last November, are a different team this season and have given up just five goals during their current win streak. “I just think everyone’s buying in,” Vancouver forward Derek Dorsett told Sportsnet. “Everyone’s chipping in and having fun playing hard. I think we have the most depth we’ve had since I’ve been here (four seasons) and it’s showing.”

TV: 10 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest Plus (Dallas), Sportsnet Pacific (Vancouver)

ABOUT THE STARS (6-5-0): Dallas went 5-for-8 with the man advantage in the last two games to ascend to the top of the league at 32.4 percent and are 21-of-21 on the penalty kill over the last seven contests to improve to 92.1 percent. “The power play is good, but we’ve got to start scoring 5-on-5,” forward Alexander Radulov, who has four points in the last two games, told reporters. “That’s a really big thing right now for our team.” Captain Jamie Benn was kept off the scoresheet against Calgary, but owns all of his team-leading seven goals in the last eight contests and tops the Stars with 13 points.

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (6-3-1): Anders Nilsson has been between the pipes for outstanding performances in the last two games, improving to 3-1-0 with a .943 save percentage and 1.89 goals-against average, but Jacob Markstrom (3-2-1, .908, 2.48) won the first two in the streak. Brock Boeser had a career-high three points (all assists) in the 6-2 win over Washington on Thursday and leads the team with nine in eight games. Dorsett continues to produce with all of his six goals in the last seven games to lead the team and fellow forward Sven Baertschi notched four goals in the last three contests.

                  OVERTIME

                  1. The Canucks are 11-for-11 on the penalty kill since giving up four power-play goals against Boston on Oct. 19.

                  2. Dallas G Ben Bishop, who was rested in Friday’s victory, has just an .899 save percentage in seven career games against the Canucks.

                  3. Vancouver F Daniel Sedin has been held without a point in the last two games and remains 10 away from 1,000 in his career.

                  PREDICTION: Stars 4, Canucks 1

                      Preview: Maple Leafs at Sharks

                      Gracenote
                      Oct 29, 2017

The Toronto Maple Leafs are facing their first adversity of the season with two straight losses as they open a four-game road swing Monday night against the improving San Jose Sharks. The Maple Leafs, who opened the season with six wins in seven games, gave up 10 goals combined in losses to Carolina and Philadelphia the last two times out and have dropped nine straight meetings with the Sharks.

“A little reality therapy has probably set in for us,” Toronto coach Mike Babcock told reporters. “Everyone was telling us how great we were. We’re probably not as great as we felt, right now we’re probably not as bad as we feel.” The Maple Leafs will try to snap their first losing streak of the season against the Sharks, who open a five-game homestand with four wins in their last six contests after Saturday’s 3-2 win at Buffalo. The game will mark the return of Patrick Marleau, who posted 508 goals and 1,082 points in 1,493 career games with San Jose before signing with Toronto as a free agent in the offseason. “There’s going to be a lot of emotions going back there and seeing some familiar faces on the opposite side,” Marleau told Sportsnet. “It’s all new to me.”

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, Sportsnet One (Toronto), NBCSN California (San Jose)

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (7-4-0): While Toronto’s defense has suffered breakdowns, Frederik Andersen allowed 17 goals while losing three of his last four starts and owns an .890 save percentage overall. “I have to stay the course and keep battling,” Andersen, who had a .916 save percentage last season, told reporters. “I know what I’m capable of. I’m putting in the work to be better. … We have to look forward and stay positive.” James van Riemsdyk, who boasts five goals and nine points, could return after missing Saturday’s game with a lower-body injury.

ABOUT THE SHARKS (5-5-0): Goalie Martin Jones (4-3-0, .928 save percentage, 2.31 goals-against average) was rested Saturday and should be ready to try and improve on a 6-0-0 career record against the Maple Leafs. While reigning Norris Trophy winner Brent Burns (six assists) has yet to hit the back of the net after posting 29 tallies last season, Logan Couture tops the team with eight goals - scoring five times in the last four contests. “He’s been doing that all year for us,” San Jose coach Pete DeBoer told reporters of Couture. “We need a big year out of him and he’s delivering so far.”

                      OVERTIME

                      1. San Jose F Joe Thornton needs one point to pass Hall-of-Famer Jari Kurri (1,398) for 20th on the NHL’s all-time list.

                      2. Toronto C Auston Matthews has at least a point in nine of 11 games and leads the team with eight goals to go along with 15 points.

                      3. The Sharks have struggled on the power play the last five games (2-for-19), but their penalty kill is 19-of-20 in the same span.
