    Preview: Spurs at Celtics

    Gracenote
    Oct 29, 2017

The San Antonio Spurs have hit a snag on the offensive end and now face a team that is beginning to thrive on defense when they finish a four-game road trip at the Boston Celtics on Monday. The Celtics have won four in a row while giving up an average of 90 points, forcing 19 turnovers in Saturday's 96-90 win at Miami.

"Honestly it's becoming our staple on the defensive end," point guard Kyrie Irving told reporters. "It's just not looking as pretty as we want it to on the offensive end. But defensively we can rely on that to get us out of some possessions whether we're taking a bad shot or a shot going in and out or it's a turnover at half-court or something, we're all getting back because we understand how important those possessions are down the stretch and getting timely stops." That mindset will present a challenge for a Spurs team that opened 4-0 before suffering back-to-back losses on the road trip while averaging 90.5 points. LaMarcus Aldridge scored 26 points and Pau Gasol added 17 but their teammates shot a collective 19-of-59 from the floor in Sunday's 97-94 loss at Indiana. San Antonio has won 11 straight meetings since its last loss to the Celtics in 2011, and six of those have come at TD Garden.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBATV, FSN Southwest (San Antonio), NBCSN Boston

ABOUT THE SPURS (4-2): Star swingman Kawhi Leonard (quadriceps) still has yet to play this season and the team has offered limited updates on his condition. Aldridge has led the team in scoring in all six games and Gasol is beginning to chip in a bit more, averaging 14 points on 68 percent shooting in three games since a one-point effort against Toronto in which he missed all six of his shots. Manu Ginobili is 1-for-15 from the field during the losing streak while fellow reserve Rudy Gay is 4-for-14.

ABOUT THE CELTICS (4-2): Irving has settled in nicely in Boston and provided a great example of how he can carry a team with a strong finish at Miami. "Just big possessions down the stretch (and) understanding you have to stay poised," Irving told reporters after scoring nine of his 24 points in the final two-plus minutes. "It's unwavering in those situations like that. Winning time - so it's pretty simple." Rookie Jayson Tatum chipped in 20 points and is averaging 15.2 points on 50.9 percent shooting along with 6.3 rebounds in his first six career games.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich is one win shy of tying Phil Jackson (1,155) for sixth on the NBA's all-time list.

    2. Celtics PG Terry Rozier shot 6-for-25 over the last three games.

    3. Irving has scored at least 20 points in five of his first six contests.

    PREDICTION: Celtics 99, Spurs 95

        Preview: Timberwolves at Heat

        Gracenote
        Oct 29, 2017

The Miami Heat are struggling to get into the win column without Hassan Whiteside in the middle and are about to get a big test to the defense. The Heat hope to get Whiteside back from a four-game absence when they host the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday.

Whiteside is out with a knee injury and is unlikely to return on Monday, leaving Miami without its star in the middle against Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns, and the frustration is starting to mount for a Heat team that dropped two straight home games, including 96-90 to the Boston Celtics on Saturday. "I have high expectations for this team," Miami point guard Goran Dragic told reporters. "That’s why I’m frustrated. Because we’re not playing at a level that we know we can." The Timberwolves know what it's like to be without one of their star players and dropped two straight while swingman Jimmy Butler battled an upper respiratory infection. Butler returned to the lineup on Friday and delivered 25 points, seven rebounds and five assists as Minnesota held off the Oklahoma City Thunder 119-116.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FS North (Minnesota), FS Sun (Miami)

ABOUT THE TIMBERWOLVES (3-3): Towns is coming off his best game of the young season after dominating the inside en route to 33 points, 19 rebounds and four blocks in the win over the Thunder. “He was terrific," Minnesota coach Tom Thibodeau told reporters of Towns. "The activity, the shot blocking. He really played hard. He made a lot of great plays for the team. His patience was good. That helped us get into a good rhythm." Another player finding a rhythm for the Timberwolves is point guard Jeff Teague, who collected 17 points and 10 assists in Friday's win for his first double-double in a Minnesota uniform.

ABOUT THE HEAT (2-3): Miami's 90 points on Saturday marked a season low, and the team is trying to figure out how to execute on offense without Whiteside. "Right now, the first unit we don't look good," Dragic told reporters. "So, we’re going to have to make some changes to our approach or how we want to play. You can learn from these mistakes. Hopefully we’re going to figure it out quick." Dragic scored a team-high 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting Saturday and is averaging 20.2 points while shooting 50.6 percent from the floor.

        BUZZER BEATERS

1.Minnesota SG Jamal Crawford is 11-of-40 from the floor over the last four games.

        2. Heat SG Dion Waiters scored five points on Saturday, failing to reach double figures for the first time this season.

        3. Miami took both meetings last season and three of the last four in the series.

        PREDICTION: Timberwolves 113, Heat 103

            Preview: Nuggets at Knicks

            Gracenote
            Oct 29, 2017

A pair of teams coming off impressive road wins meet Monday in Madison Square Garden as the New York Knicks host the Denver Nuggets. The Knicks authored one of the more stunning results on the young season with a 114-95 victory at Cleveland on Sunday, their second victory in a row following an 0-3 start.

Tim Hardaway Jr. emerged from an early slump with a season-high 34 points while handing out eight assists to help New York defeat the Cavaliers for the first time in the last 11 tries. The Nuggets are enjoying a similar turnaround with back-to-back wins following a 1-3 start, and they'll be waiting in New York for the Knicks to return after topping the Brooklyn Nets 124-111 on Sunday. Jamal Murray scored 26 points to lead a starting five that shot 51.5 percent from the floor, 50 percent from 3-point range and 15-of-16 from the free-throw line. Denver has won five meetings in a row with New York and averaged 129 points in sweeping two encounters last season.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, Altitude (Denver), MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (3-3): Nikola Jokic has bounced back from a scoreless 30-minute effort against Sacramento on Oct. 21 with four straight solid games, including three consecutive double-doubles. He finished Sunday's win with 21 points and 14 rebounds and has shot 50 percent or better in each of the four affairs. Emmanuel Mudiay, Murray's backup, needed just 19 minutes of action to produce 15 points and five assists.

ABOUT THE KNICKS (2-3): Forward Kristaps Porzingis has scored at least 30 points in four of the first five games as he asserts himself as the clear go-to guy with Carmelo Anthony no longer around. The 7-3 Latvian had 32 points and 12 rebounds in the win over Cleveland and fellow big man Enes Kanter also had a double-double with 18 points and 12 boards. New York's turnaround has coincided with the return from an ankle injury of rookie guard Frank Ntilikina, who has chipped in with averages of seven points and four assists off the bench in the two-game run.

            BUZZER BEATERS

            1. Knicks PG Jarrett Jack handed out nine assists Sunday and has 14 against three turnovers over the last two games.

            2. Denver SF Wilson Chandler finished with 18 points Sunday for his first double-digit scoring effort this season.

            3. Nuggets PF Juan Hernangomez (mono) has missed three straight games.

            PREDICTION: Nuggets 111, Knicks 106

The Philadelphia 76ers are still learning how to execute in the final minute with their talented young roster but seem to be getting better in that regard. The 76ers will try to avenge a recent loss that included some struggles down the stretch when they visit the Houston Rockets on Monday.

Philadelphia had the Rockets on the ropes at home before Eric Gordon drilled a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Houston a 105-104 win on Wednesday, capping a stretch in which the Rockets scored the final nine points of the game. The 76ers got into another tight game to begin the road trip on Saturday but managed to execute better down the stretch and pull out a 112-110 win over the Dallas Mavericks. "It's the evolution of this young team," Philadelphia coach Brett Brown told reporters. "The good news is, we did things we work on in relation to closing out a game." Houston followed up that win over the 76ers with another at the Charlotte Hornets but could not muster the same energy on the second half of a back-to-back and finished off the three-game road trip with a 103-89 loss at Memphis on Saturday.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBCS Philadelphia, AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston)

ABOUT THE 76ERS (2-4): Rookie point guard Ben Simmons scored a season-high 23 points on Saturday to go with eight assists and seven rebounds and continues to wow his team. "Look at Ben Simmons' numbers ... how he impacts a game, all over the place," Brown told reporters. "Tonight, he was a four-man, a three-man, a point guard. He switched out on effectively everybody, and just beats up on a stat sheet like we see, that's a (heck) of a game." Simmons is averaging 17.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 7.5 assists while shooting 51.2 percent from the field.

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (5-2): Houston shot 37.7 percent from the floor in Saturday's loss as James Harden struggled to 20 points on 6-of-19 shooting. The All-Star guard scored at least 20 points in each of the first seven games and recorded his first triple-double of the campaign at Charlotte on Friday before slumping to eight assists and four rebounds at Memphis. Harden was operating on Saturday without Gordon, who is averaging 24.8 points but was held out due to a stomach illness and is day-to-day.

                BUZZER BEATERS

                1. 76ers SG JJ Redick (back) sat out Saturday and is day-to-day.

                2. Rockets C Clint Capela is leading the NBA in field-goal percentage at 72.9.

                3. Houston took the last eight in the series.

                PREDICTION: Rockets 110, 76ers 104

                    Preview: Hornets at Grizzlies

                    Gracenote
                    Oct 29, 2017

The Memphis Grizzlies have been one of the most impressive teams out of the gate with just one loss in six games and look to remain unbeaten at home when they host the Charlotte Hornets on Monday night. The Grizzlies boasts a victory over defending champion Golden State and knocked off high-scoring Houston 103-89 on Saturday to improve to 4-0 on their home court.

Memphis owns only three players scoring in double figures, led by center Marc Gasol (21.8 points, 10.2 rebounds), but was third in the league in scoring defense entering Sunday and allows just 93 points per game at home. The Grizzlies will have to step up again in the defensive end against Charlotte, which posted an impressive 120-113 victory over red-hot Orlando on Sunday night with a season-high 34 points from point guard Kemba Walker. Memphis held Walker to 19 points per game in two matchups last season, but the former Connecticut standout likes the way this Hornets team is coming together. “Chemistry is something we talk about a lot,” Walker told FSN Southeast. “We have to find a way to make it work on the court. We have a lot of great guys on this team, high character guys, guys that work hard and we get along very well. We want it to continue to translate on the basketball court.”

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN Southeast (Charlotte, Memphis)

ABOUT THE HORNETS (3-3): Walker improved his scoring average to 24.0 after making 15-of-25 from the field against Orlando and dished out 10 assists to give him 39 in six contests while two other players scored 20. Center Dwight Howard continues to produce after posting 22 points and 10 rebounds Sunday while Jeremy Lamb scored 20 for the second straight game and has not finished with fewer than 15 this season. Power forward Cody Zeller returned Sunday after missing four games with a knee injury and finished with six points to go along with six rebounds.

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (5-1): Chandler Parsons managed just 22 points in his first four games of the season, but erupted for 24 in Saturday’s win over Houston on 9-of-11 from the field - including 6-of-8 from 3-point range. “That was awesome,” Parsons told reporters Saturday. “I’ve been waiting on tonight for a really long time. It’s all about confidence with me. I felt like everything I threw up there was going to go in.” Mike Conley (17.5 points, four assists) and fellow guard Tyreke Evans (12.3) are the only other Memphis players averaging in double figures scoring.

                    BUZZER BEATERS

                    1. Charlotte G Dwayne Bacon, a second-round pick in last June’s draft, is averaging 5.5 rebounds in 24 minutes.

                    2. Memphis G Mario Chalmers scored a season-high 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting against Houston on Saturday.

                    3. The Hornets have won three of the last four meetings, including a 104-85 triumph at Memphis Nov. 28, 2016.

                    PREDICTION: Grizzlies 105, Hornets 98

                        Preview: Magic at Pelicans

                        Gracenote
                        Oct 29, 2017

The New Orleans Pelicans look to follow up two outstanding performances when they go for their third straight victory Monday night against the visiting Orlando Magic. The Pelicans finished their road trip with an eight-point win at Sacramento and came home to set season highs in points and assists (33) in Saturday’s 123-101 rout of the Cleveland with three players scoring at least 29.

“We’re locked in as a unit,” New Orleans center DeMarcus Cousins, who is averaging 32.3 points and 13.8 rebounds, told reporters. “We feel like we can battle with the best of them. We’re starting to understand what it takes to win games.” Forward Anthony Davis said the Pelicans will be “a special team” and they should get tested against the much-improved Magic, who had won four of their first five games - including victories over Cleveland and San Antonio - before dropping a 120-113 decision at Charlotte on Sunday. Evan Fournier continued his solid play with 23 points and Jonathon Simmons poured in a career-high 27, but Orlando allowed 54.1 percent shooting overall and 34 points to Kemba Walker. “I’m proud of how we fought,” Magic coach Frank Vogel told reporters. “But 120 points in going to get you beat. Fifty-four percent is going to get you beat. We’ve got to do a better job in the defensive end.”

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Orlando), FSN New Orleans

ABOUT THE MAGIC (4-2): Forward Aaron Gordon is off to a terrific start, especially in the last three games when he is averaging 24.7 points and 9.7 rebounds while draining nine of his 15 attempts from 3-point range. Center Nikola Vucevic notched his first double-double (15 points, 11 rebounds) Sunday since accomplishing the feat in the first two games of the season, but missed 11 of his 17 shots from the field. Simmons played a season-high 32 minutes Sunday, in part, due to the absence of fellow small forward Jonathan Isaac as the rookie missed his first game of the season due to illness.

ABOUT THE PELICANS (3-3): Davis scored 30 to push his average to 25.4, Cousins had 29 and point guard Jrue Holiday stepped up with a season-high 29 against Cleveland as New Orleans shot 51.6 percent from the field. “I told (Holiday) when he came out, ‘We are going to need this from you every night. This is how you got to start playing. You play like this, we are a tough team to beat,’” Davis said to reporters after Holiday made 12-of-17 from the floor and dished out seven assists. Holiday’s backcourt partner E’Twaun Moore, averaging 12.3 points, scored a career high-tying 24 against Cleveland.

                        OVERTIME

                        1. Orlando SG Terrence Ross scored a season-high 17 on 6-of-15 shooting after making just two of his 22 shots in the previous three contests.

                        2. New Orleans F Josh Smith, who played in China last season, scored two points and grabbed four boards in seven minutes Saturday in his season debut.

                        3. The Magic have won four of the last five meetings, but the Pelicans won the last matchup of 2016-17 at home.

                        PREDICTION: Pelicans 110, Magic 101

                            Preview: Mavericks at Jazz

The Utah Jazz have yet to win on the road but are luckily near the beginning of a stretch with eight of nine at home. The Jazz will try to improve to 2-0 in that stretch and 4-0 at home overall when they host the struggling Dallas Mavericks on Monday.

Utah dropped back-to-back games at Phoenix and the Los Angeles Clippers last week but returned home and clamped down on defense in a 96-81 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday. "This team is still trying to discover who it is," Jazz coach Quin Snyder told reporters. "...I've said all along, it's a work in progress. As long as our defense stays strong, we'll have an opportunity to be competitive while we're trying to get better." The Mavericks are trying to get better as well and dropped six of their first seven games, including a 112-110 home loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday. “We’ve just got to do better really over the course of 48 minutes,” Dallas coach Rick Carlisle told reporters. "That’s really the biggest thing."

TV: 9 p.m. ET, FS Southwest (Dallas), AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Utah)

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (1-6): Dallas small forward Harrison Barnes scored a team-high 25 points on Saturday but was a minus-18 on the night and had some harsh words for himself and his fellow starters. "It’s our starting unit," Barnes told reporters. "At the beginning of the first quarter and at the beginning of the third quarter we’re getting off to slow starts, and it puts the whole team in a deficit. I mean, look at the way the second unit was playing with just the plus-minus. All of those guys were contributing and getting us back in the game. But as starters, we can’t put ourselves in that deficit." Point guard J.J. Barea is the leader of that reserve unit and is averaging 13.1 points and 5.1 assists in 22.9 minutes.

ABOUT THE JAZZ (3-3): Utah lost leading scorer Gordon Hayward over the summer to free agency but could be witnessing the emergence of a new go-to scorer in rookie guard Donovan Mitchell. The 21-year-old enjoyed a breakout with 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting in Saturday's win while knocking down 3-of-6 from beyond the arc and showing off his athleticism on some highlight-worthy dunks. “Biggest thing for Donovan is to not get too high or too low after games," Snyder told reporters. "… He obviously doesn’t have a lot of fear. That’s a good thing."

                            BUZZER BEATERS

                            1. Mavericks SG Wesley Matthews is 10-of-17 from 3-point range over the last three games.

                            2. Jazz PF Derrick Favors recorded his first double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds on Saturday and is 14-of-20 from the field in the last two contests.

                            3. Utah took three of the four meetings last season, falling in overtime at Dallas on Feb. 9 for the lone loss.

                            PREDICTION: Jazz 102, Mavericks 90

The Portland Trail Blazers and the Toronto Raptors feature two of the highest-scoring backcourts in the league, and both enter the week in fine form. The Raptors will try to ride the hot hands of Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan to another road win when they visit Damian Lillard, CJ McCollum and the Trail Blazers on Monday.

DeRozan scored 17 of his 24 points in the second half and knocked down a tiebreaking jumper midway through the fourth quarter as the Raptors snapped a two-game slide with a 101-92 win at the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday. "Just my mentality," DeRozan explained to reporters. "I don’t really look at the mismatch. My mentality is to go out there and close the game. I just try to go out there and do my job." The same could be said for Lillard, who scored 25 points on Saturday and kept his team clear in the final minute en route to a 111-107 win over the Phoenix Suns. McCollum added 23 points and six assists in the win and scored at least 23 points in each of his five games after being suspended for the season opener.

ABOUT THE RAPTORS (3-2): Lowry is struggling to find his shooting form and is averaging just 12.4 points on 35.5 percent shooting in the early going but is still finding ways to impact the game. The Villanova product recorded his first triple-double of the season with 11 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds in Friday's win. "He just made winning plays," Toronto coach Dwane Casey told reporters. "It wasn’t overall scoring, whatever it was, he had trouble making buckets, but he just made winning hustle plays, rebounding. Got in there and got some big rebounds, gave up some assists, just did the little things you really don’t notice on the scoreboard to help us win. That’s who he is."

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (4-2): Portland is shooting just 43.4 percent from the field but is limiting opponents to 42.7 percent. “Right now things aren’t falling but I think right now our defense is leading to our offense," reserve swingman Evan Turner told the team's website. "I think right now we’ve done a decently good job of spreading the ball around, guys stepping up making shots. I think we have a lot more guys contributing but right now it has to be more consistent." Lillard (37 percent) and center Jusuf Nurkic (39.4 percent) are struggling the most with their shot.

                                1. Raptors C Jonas Valanciunas (ankle) and C Lucas Nogueria (ankle) are both questionable for Monday.

                                2. Trail Blazers SG Pat Connaughton is 13-of-26 from 3-point range.

                                3. Toronto swept the two-game series in each of the last two seasons.

PREDICTION: Trail Blazers 111, Raptors 107
