World Series Game 6 betting preview and odds: Astros at Dodgers

Justin Verlander received a no-decision in Game 2 and has never won a World Series game, going 0-3 with a 6.43 in four career starts with the Detroit Tigers and Houston Astros.

Houston Astros at Los Angeles Dodgers (-115, 7.5)

      Astros lead series 3-2

Justin Verlander was acquired to bolster Houston's starting pitching for a postseason run and the veteran right-hander has a chance to pitch the Astros to their first World Series title when he faces the host Los Angeles Dodgers in Tuesday's Game 6. Verlander received a no-decision in Game 2 and has never won a World Series game, going 0-3 with a 6.43 in four career starts with the Detroit Tigers and Houston.

The 34-year-old Verlander has more than does his job since joining the Astros - he is 9-0 with a 1.53 ERA in 10 total appearances (nine starts) - but fully understands one more big outing is needed. "These games are what it's all about," Verlander told reporters Monday. "These are the moments that you want to be a part of as a baseball player. It's everything you could ask for." Houston is in position to clinch after Sunday's 13-12, 10-inning victory, the second wild game of a World Series featuring a record 22 homers. "Obviously, we want to be the last team standing on the field, win the last game of the season, that's the goal," Los Angeles third baseman Justin Turner said at a press conference. "But you have literally the two best teams in baseball are going at it. It's the clash of the titans right now, and I don't think there's a single moment of this season that will be unforgettable."

      TV:
      8:20 p.m. ET, FOX

      LINE HISTORY:
The moneyline for this critical Game 6 opened with the Dodgers as faily large home favorites at -125. Since opening last night the betting public has been on Verlander and the Astros, forcing books to drop the Dodgers down to the current number of -115. The total hit the betting boards at 7.5 and has yet to move.

      WEATHER REPORT:

It should be another near perfect evening in Los Angeles.

      PITCHING MATCHUP:
Astros RH Justin Verlander (4-0, 2.05 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Rich Hill (0-0, 2.77)

Verlander gave up just two hits in his Game 2 outing at Dodger Stadium but both were homers (to Joc Pederson and Corey Seager) as he gave up three runs in six innings. Not having a World Series win might be the lone thing missing from a stellar career resume that includes 11 career postseason victories. "As soon as the postseason starts, you're living or dying on every single pitch, and your whole team is living or dying on every single pitch," Verlander said. "It changes everything."

Hill was the recipient of a quick hook from manager Dave Roberts despite giving up one run and three hits and striking out seven in four innings in Game 2. Roberts hinted that Hill will have a longer leash in Game 6 and the 37-year-old proclaims himself ready for the task. "It's something that all of us have been preparing our entire careers for," Hill told reporters. "Going out there in Game 6 and having the ability to be in that position, and go out there and leave everything on the field, is just an amazing thought."

      UMPIRE REPORT: Dan Iassogna

Dan Iassogna gets the home plate assignment Tuesday night for Game 6. During the 2017 season, home teams are an astronomical 21-7 (including one playoff game) which equates to a home winning percentage of 75 percent. In games in which the home team is -101 to -120 they went a perfect 6-0 with Iassogna calling balls and strikes.

      TRENDS:

      * Astros are 9-0 in Verlander's nine starts since joining the team.
      * Dodgers are 5-1 in their last 6 playoff home games.
      * Dodgers are 5-1 in Hill's last 6 starts.
      * Over is 6-1 in Astro's last 7 road games vs. a left-handed starter.
      * Astros are 2-7 in the last 9 meetings in Los Angeles.

      CONSENSUS:
The public is siding with the red-hot Verlander in Game 6, with 51 percent of wagers on the Astros. With another hot pitcher on the mound, bettors like the Under here with 51 percent of the totals wagers picking below the posted number.

      WALK OFF NOTES:

      * Dodgers' 1B Cody Bellinger is on a 4-for-7 roll with one homer, one triple and two doubles after opening the World Series with 13 hitless at-bats. Astros' OF George Springer reached base five times (three walks, one single, one homer) in Game 5 and has gone deep three times in the series.

                    Preview: Kings at Pacers

                    Gracenote
                    Oct 30, 2017

Victor Oladipo has began his tenure with Indiana as a potent scoring machine and looks to continue the production when the Pacers host the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday. The former college star at nearby Indiana University was the main piece acquired from the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Paul George trade and is averaging 25.5 points through his first six games.

Oladipo scored more than 20 points in five of the six games and he capped Sunday's 23-point effort with a game-winning 3-pointer to give Indiana a 97-94 win over the San Antonio Spurs. "Everything happens for a reason," Oladipo told reporters of returning to the state as a pro player. "I feel I belong here. I'm supposed to be here for a reason." The 25-year-old Oladipo seeks his fifth straight 20-point outing when the Pacers tussle with a Sacramento squad that has dropped four straight games. The Kings are beginning a three-game trip that includes visits to Boston and Detroit after being walloped 110-83 at home by the Washington Wizards on Sunday.

                    TV:
7 p.m. ET, NBCSN California (Sacramento), FSN Indiana

ABOUT THE KINGS (1-5): Sacramento was largely uncompetitive against the Wizards and dug itself a 63-32 halftime deficit in the embarrassing home defeat. "We missed a lot of shots," second-year forward Skal Labissiere told reporters afterward. "We shot some good shots, missed a lot, and games like that happen every once in a while. We're just going to have to move on from it." Point guard De'Aaron Fox made his first career start and it didn't go well as he had just two points on 1-of-8 shooting while the fifth overall pick is averaging 12.7 points and five assists.

ABOUT THE PACERS (3-3): Second-year forward Domantas Sabonis also was acquired in the George deal and he is making an impact by averaging 13 points and 10.2 rebounds. The 21-year-old was superb against the Spurs by scoring a career-high 22 points on 9-of-9 shooting and matched his career best of 12 rebounds for his fourth consecutive contest in double digits on the boards and he is emerging as a symbol for what the post-George Pacers stand by. "We're just trying to do it by committee," point guard Darren Collison told reporters. "We understand we have no All-Stars on this team. We have very good players on this team and if we have to do it by committee to win games, let's do it. There are teams that do it that way, and don't rely on one guy."

                    BUZZER BEATERS

                    1. The Pacers won last season's two meetings by an average of five points after losing the previous four matchups.

                    2. Sacramento PG George Hill (9.8 points) and PF Zach Randolph (9.3 points, seven rebounds) will be back in the lineup after being rested Sunday.

                    3. Indiana C Myles Turner (concussion, neck) will miss his sixth consecutive game.

                    PREDICTION: Pacers 109, Kings 97

                        Preview: Suns at Nets

                        Gracenote
                        Oct 30, 2017

The Phoenix Suns missed a chance to reach .500 and now look to avoid heading into a downward spiral when they visit the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday. Phoenix lost to Portland in the opener of a five-game trip and visits to Washington, New York and San Antonio are on the horizon following the matchup with the Nets.

The Suns are adjusting to interim coach Jay Triano and won two straight games after his promotion before falling 114-107 to the Trail Blazers on Saturday. "I thought we played the right way," Triano told reporters. "I didn't think we finished our shots down the stretch, but we put ourselves in a position, on the road, to win a game. I give our guys a lot of credit." Brooklyn has suffered two straight defeats after Sunday's 124-111 home loss to the Denver Nuggets. Beating the Suns also ranks as high priority for the Nets as a five-game road trip follows Tuesday's contest.

                        TV:
7:30 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona-Plus (Phoenix), YES (Brooklyn)

ABOUT THE SUNS (2-4): Phoenix began the season in turmoil with three straight losses before the firing of coach Earl Watson and the banishment of guard Eric Bledsoe after he expressed he didn't want to remain with the club. The competitiveness has increased and the attitude has approved with the upfront Triano at the helm, and the club is also waiting on standout shooting guard Devin Booker to hit a sustained groove. Booker, who turned 21 on Monday, had his best scoring game (34 points) of the season against Portland for the 21st 30-point outing of his young career.

                        ABOUT THE NETS (3-4):
Backup point guard Spencer Dinwiddie is displaying signs of being a solid contributor by scoring a career-high 22 points in two of the past three games. The 24-year-old Dinwiddie has picked up extra minutes lately with starter D'Angelo Russell dealing with a knee injury and he is averaging 11 points and 5.6 assists after having averages of 7.3 and 3.1, respectively, last season. Russell averaged just 21 minutes over the past two games and was 3-of-12 shooting while scoring 12 points against the Nuggets.

                        BUZZER BEATERS

                        1. The Nets won last season's two meetings by an average of 23 points and have taken the last four overall matchups.

                        2. Brooklyn F Quincy Acy (groin) will miss his second straight game while F DaMarre Carroll (ankle) is expected to play after a one-game absence.

                        3. Phoenix G Mike James is 3-of-18 shooting over the past two games.

                        PREDICTION: Nets 127, Suns 120

                            Preview: Thunder at Bucks

                            Oct 30, 2017

Nobody is off to a better start than Giannis Antetokounmpo and the 22-year-old "Greek Freak" looks to continue his excellence when the Milwaukee Bucks host the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday. Antetokounmpo leads the NBA with a 34.7 scoring average and has four double-doubles while shooting 63.1 percent from the field.

Antetokounmpo contributed 33 points and 11 rebounds in Sunday's 117-106 road win over the Atlanta Hawks to post his fifth 30-point outing of the season while early season MVP chatter revolves around his name. "To be honest it's really hard not to pay attention turning on the TV and seeing your face everywhere," Antetokounmpo told reporters after Sunday's win. "But I'm a low-profile guy and I want to stay like that because it's a long season. I've got to help my team win." Oklahoma City boasts the reigning MVP on its roster in Russell Westbrook and he became the first player in NBA history to post a triple-double against 29 different opponents when he had 12 points, 13 rebounds and 13 assists in the Thunder's 101-69 rout of the Chicago Bulls on Saturday. "It's really his mentality that I have great respect for and an admiration that I love," Oklahoma City coach Billy Donovan told reporters. "He's an old-school, just bring it - he just has certain values in the way the game is supposed to be played from a competitive standpoint."

                            TV:
8 p.m. ET, NBATV, FSN Oklahoma, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

ABOUT THE THUNDER (3-3): Adding forwards Paul George and Carmelo Anthony to the mix has kept Oklahoma City in the chemistry developing mode but the new stars definitely have been amazed by Westbrook's level of competitiveness. "It's special. Man, that's a special player," George said after the victory over Chicago. "He's solidifying himself early as a Hall of Famer. It was crazy to see playing against him, and it's even crazier to see him doing it night in and night out being on his team. It's crazy. There's not a player that's been in this league that's been at his (effort) level." Westbrook is averaging 20.8 points, 12.2 assists and 9.8 rebounds while Anthony is averaging a team-best 23.8 points and George is at 19.5.

                            ABOUT THE BUCKS (4-2):
Valuable backup center Greg Monroe will be sidelined at least two more weeks due to a left calf strain that he aggravated in Thursday's contest against the Boston Celtics. Monroe initially injured the calf in training camp and he was unavailable against the Hawks on Sunday, leading to Monday's decision to shut him down to give the injury a chance to heal. John Henson is in line for a primary role while Monroe is sidelined and he recorded season highs of 12 points and nine rebounds against Atlanta.

                            1. The teams split two meetings last season with the Bucks prevailing 98-94 in the meeting in Milwaukee.

                            2. Milwaukee SG Khris Middleton posted season bests of 27 points and nine assists in the win over Atlanta.

                            3. Oklahoma City averages a league-best 11.5 steals per game with George accumulating a team-best 16.

                            PREDICTION: Thunder 114, Bucks 113

                                Preview: Pistons at Lakers

                                Gracenote
                                Oct 30, 2017

The Detroit Pistons look to finish off a three-game California excursion with their fourth consecutive overall win when they visit the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday. The Pistons posted a pair of eight-point victories over the Los Angeles Clippers and Golden State Warriors and are enjoying a strong start to the campaign.

Sunday's 115-107 victory over the Warriors on the second night of a back-to-back was an impressive accomplishment for Detroit, which knocked down 12 3-pointers and connected on all 17 free-throw attempts. "It means a lot," forward Tobias Harris told reporters afterward. "Two games versus two very good teams. The morale in the locker room is great right now. We're embracing each other. We're enjoying it. We're having fun and that's the biggest thing." The Lakers aren't finding much enjoyment after back-to-back defeats, including setting a season low for points in Saturday's 96-81 road loss against the Utah Jazz. Los Angeles rookie point guard Lonzo Ball is experiencing more downs than ups while shooting 31.1 percent from the field and scoring in single digits in five of six games.

                                TV:
10:30 p.m. ET, NBATV, FSN Detroit, Spectrum SportsNet (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE PISTONS (5-2): Coach Stan Van Gundy always keeps the pressure ratcheted up on his players and that remained the case while the club was celebrating its victory over the defending NBA champions. "It's great and I'm not downplaying it. These two wins are great but it truly is two of 82," Van Gundy told reporters, also referencing the win over the Clippers. "We're seven games into an 82-game season, 75 to go. These guys should be very, very happy (Sunday night). And then (Monday) you've got to start getting yourself ready to play again." Shooting guard Avery Bradley was certainly ready against the Warriors as he established season highs of 23 points and five 3-pointers during an effort that raised his average to 15.4.

                                ABOUT THE LAKERS (2-4):
Ball is averaging 10 points, 7.7 assists and 7.5 rebounds but is an abysmal 10-of-41 shooting over the past four games. The No. 2 overall pick of the 2017 draft had more turnovers (five) than assists (four) while scoring nine points on 3-of-10 shooting against Utah as he and his teammates struggle to find their offensive flow. "We are still trying to find our identity," Ball told reporters after the Utah loss. "We are trying to run and some of the possessions are getting caught in the half court and we are just standing. So it comes with practice. We have to figure it out in practice and transition to the game."

                                BUZZER BEATERS

                                1. The Pistons have won the past three meetings after losing 12 of the previous 13.

                                2. Los Angeles C Brook Lopez has failed to reach double digits in three of the past four games.

                                3. Detroit C Andre Drummond has at least 12 rebounds in all seven games and is averaging 12.9 points and 14.4 boards.

                                PREDICTION: Pistons 103, Lakers 99
