      Preview: Kings at Celtics

      Gracenote
      Nov 1, 2017

The Boston Celtics look to notch their 11th consecutive home victory over Sacramento when they host the struggling Kings on Wednesday. Boston brings momentum into the contest with five straight wins while Sacramento is sinking by dropping five consecutive contests.

The Celtics lost offseason acquisition Gordon Hayward (broken leg) in their opener and started 0-2 before turning things around with the winning streak that includes Monday's solid 108-94 win over the San Antonio Spurs. "Once (the Hayward injury) happened, we really didn't know where we were at as a group," center Al Horford told reporters. "But I felt like we've really come together and we're trying to take it day by day." The Kings scored just 83 points in each of their past two defeats, losing those contests by an average of 22.5 points. Sacramento's 101-83 setback against the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday marks the third time it has lost by 17 or more points during the five-game skid.

      TV:
7:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN California (Sacramento), NBCSN Boston

ABOUT THE KINGS (1-6): Rookie point guard De'Aaron Fox bounced back from a poor effort in Sunday's loss to Washington - two points on 1-of-8 shooting - to score 18 points against the Pacers. The fifth overall pick of the 2017 draft has scored in double digits five times but is having trouble adjusting to losing - he has already been part of as many losses as his one college season at Kentucky (32-6). "It's different," Fox said after Tuesday's setback. "For me, I've never really lost in my life. It's just a hump we need to get through."

      ABOUT THE CELTICS (5-2):
Point guard Kyrie Irving is beginning to feel comfortable and is averaging 22.6 points during the winning streak, including 24 in each of the past three games. But just as impressive has been Irving's fit on the defensive end as he as recorded multiple steals in six of the team's seven games and is averaging 2.4 thefts per game. "He's doing a good job of knowing when to peel back and switch," Boston coach Brad Stevens told reporters. "He's doing a good job of chasing when he needs to chase. He stays in plays. He gets his hands on balls."

      BUZZER BEATERS

      1. The Celtics have won six of the past nine meetings.

      2. Sacramento SG Buddy Hield is averaging just 5.5 points on 5-of-20 shooting over the past two games.

      3. Boston PF Marcus Morris (knee) is slated to make his season debut on Wednesday.

      PREDICTION: Celtics 112, Kings 89

          Preview: Bulls at Heat

          Gracenote
          Oct 31, 2017

The season didn't begin on the best note for the Chicago Bulls, and it only seems to be getting worse. The Bulls will try to avoid another loss and earn their first win on the road when they visit the Miami Heat on Wednesday.

Chicago, which has not yet had Bobby Portis or Nikola Mirotic on the court this season after the former punched the latter in the face on the eve of the regular season, is finding it difficult to score points. The Bulls shot just 28.2 percent from the floor and went 10-of-37 from 3-point range while committing 20 turnovers in a 101-69 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday as they failed to build on the momentum of their only win two nights earlier. The Heat are having their own trouble generating momentum and are trying to come out even on their six-game homestand after dropping three in a row to fall to 2-3. The most crushing of the three losses came against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday, when Miami gave up the first six points of overtime and went on to lose 125-122.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBCS Chicago, FS Sun (Miami)

ABOUT THE BULLS (1-4): Chicago is hoping Saturday's loss represented rock bottom for the team, and coach Fred Hoiberg spent the last few days working the players hard in practice. "Our competitive spirit, we lost it," Hoiberg told reporters. "A lot of that happened when we stopped making shots. Make an impact somewhere else. Go get a rebound. Go get a loose ball. Take a charge. Do something to impact the game in a positive manner." One player making a positive impact for the Bulls is rookie forward Lauri Markkanen, who is averaging 15.6 points and 9.6 rebounds while scoring in double figures in each of the first five games.

          ABOUT THE HEAT (2-4):
Miami has its own talented rookie in the frontcourt in Bam Adebayo, and he is getting a chance to play big minutes with Hassan Whiteside (knee) out of the lineup. Adebayo played a total of six minutes in the first three games but started to get more time last Wednesday and enjoyed his breakout in Monday's loss to Minnesota, when he collected his first double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. "I feel like my mind is starting to slow down," Adebayo told reporters. "I’m not going too fast. I’m starting to pace myself. Coach is allowing me to get all these minutes. I thank him for it because he believes in me just like I believe in me and my team."

          BUZZER BEATERS

          1. Chicago PG Kris Dunn (finger) made his season debut on Saturday and managed eight points and three assists in 22 minutes off the bench.

          2. Whiteside missed the last five games and is questionable for Wednesday.

          3. Miami took five of the last seven in the series, but both losses in that span came last season.

          PREDICTION: Heat 101, Bulls 88

              Preview: Rockets at Knicks

              Gracenote
              Oct 31, 2017

The Houston Rockets are struggling a bit with losses in two straight games, and poor 3-point shooting is partly to blame. The New York Knicks, who host the Rockets on Wednesday, are winners of three in a row behind emerging superstar Kristaps Porzingis.

Houston led the NBA in 3-point attempts last season (40.3) and connected on 35.7 percent of those attempts, helping to lift the team into the No. 3 spot in the Western Conference. The Rockets are not quite as sharp so far in 2017-18 and are at 30.7 percent on 44 attempts per game after going 13-of-47 from beyond the arc in a 115-107 home loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday. Porzingis went 4-of-7 from beyond the arc en route to a career-high 38-point outburst in a 116-110 win over Denver on the second night of a back-to-back Monday. The Knicks were at home for that one after thoroughly dominating the defending Eastern Conference champion Cleveland Cavaliers 114-95 on Sunday - a win that featured 32 points and 12 rebounds from the 22-year-old Porzingis.

              TV:
              8 p.m. ESPN

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (5-3): Houston's best looks from beyond the arc come when the team is playing with pace, and right now it is not playing fast enough, according to coach Mike D'Antoni. "We just got to push it," D'Antoni told reporters. "...We just need to be more focused at doing it. We haven't done it. We've been working at it and talking about it, trying to get better. That's the key. We can't do it otherwise." Shooting guard Eric Gordon stepped into the starting lineup when Chris Paul went down with a knee injury in the first game and is firing away from beyond the arc but connecting on just 30.2 percent of his 12.3 attempts.

ABOUT THE KNICKS (3-3): New York began the season with three straight losses before turning things around on both ends of the court and is drawing praise for its resilience. "This going to be a process throughout the whole year," Knicks coach Jeff Hornacek told reporters. "We have great effort right now with the guys. They're listening. They're trying. ... I'm very happy with the way they've responded. 0-3 you can duck your head, but I think that says something about these guys. They kept working. I think they have the belief that we're going to get there." In addition to Porzingis, the Knicks are getting solid play in the middle from centers Enes Kanter and Kyle O'Quinn, who combined for 27 points and 21 rebounds in Monday's win.

              BUZZER BEATERS

              1. The Knicks' winning streak corresponded with the return of PG Frank Ntilikina (ankle), who is averaging 6.3 points and three assists in 18.3 minutes off the bench in the last three games.

              2. Rockets C Clint Capela leads the NBA in field-goal percentage at 72.3.

              3. Houston took the last three and 14 of the last 15 in the series.

              PREDICTION: Rockets 113, Knicks 109

                  Preview: Magic at Grizzlies

                  Gracenote
                  Oct 31, 2017

The high-scoring Orlando Magic are one of the biggest surprises of the first two weeks and will try to clinch a winning three-game road trip when they visit the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday. The Magic are second in the NBA at an average of 116.9 points while the Grizzlies entered play on Tuesday third in the NBA in points allowed, surrendering an average of 95.6.

Orlando had a three-game winning streak come to an end in the opener of the trip with a 120-113 loss at Charlotte but bounced back by dominating the fourth quarter and pulling out a 115-99 triumph at New Orleans on Monday. "We worked hard and we challenged them at halftime," Magic coach Frank Vogel told reporters. "We know that we’re doing some really special things on the offensive end and that all feels good, but it’s not going to result in wins if we don’t buckle down on defense." Memphis squandered a 13-point fourth-quarter lead in a 104-99 home loss to Charlotte on Monday that marked a season high in points allowed. "Defensively, we just had some air head mistakes that we normally haven’t been making where we gave up 3s, didn’t stop the ball twice on the weak side," Grizzlies coach David Fizdale told reporters. "We got sucked in on stuff that we normally don’t get sucked in on and gave up 3s on the weak side. Frustrating, but we’ll get into the film and we’ll learn from it."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Florida (Orlando), FS Southeast (Memphis)

ABOUT THE MAGIC (5-2): Orlando is being led by the frontcourt trio of Nikola Vucevic, Aaron Gordon and Evan Fournier, who are averaging a combined 63.7 points, but they needed some help off the bench on Monday from reserve Marreese Speights. The veteran, who totaled six minutes in the previous three games, played 22 on Monday and knocked down six 3-pointers en route to 18 points. "I’m mentally prepared on the bench and it doesn’t matter if I’m going to play or not, I’ll always be locked in on the game, know what’s going on and know how the (opposing) big guys are playing," Speights told the team's website. "Then, when I get into the game, I’m already loaded and ready. But that comes from being locked in and mentally prepared on the bench."

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (5-2): Memphis point guard Mike Conley is battling a sore left Achilles and is struggling with his shot, shooting 36.8 percent from the floor and 26.1 percent from 3-point range after a 4-of-18 effort in Monday's setback. "I don’t think it’s anything systematically we have to do, I just think he’ll settle in and those shots will start falling for him," Fizdale told reporters of Conley. "He’s even uncharacteristically missing some free throws right now that he normally makes, but it’s a long season. I’m not worried about Mike at all. I’ll take those shots every day of the week, and I know that once we move a little more into the season, he’s going to start hitting those." Conley, who is 0-of-10 from 3-point range in the last two games, is considered day-to-day.

                  BUZZER BEATERS

                  1. Orlando SF Jonathon Simmons is 24-of-40 from the field in the last three games.

                  2. Memphis exercised its fourth-year contract option on F Jarell Martin on Tuesday.

                  3. The teams split the two meetings last season, with each winning on its own home floor.

                  PREDICTION: Magic 109, Grizzlies 101

                      Preview: Timberwolves at Pelicans

                      Gracenote
                      Oct 31, 2017

The Minnesota Timberwolves will try for a second time this season to string together three straight wins when they visit the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday. The Timberwolves, who haven't won four straight since Dec. 2012, outlasted the Miami Heat in overtime on Monday, scoring the first six points of the extra session en route to a 125-122 win.

Three players - Jeff Teague, Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns - reached the 20-point mark for Minnesota, which is 4-0 in games decided by three points or fewer. "We have a lot of people who know how to win, know how to close out games," Wiggins told reporters. The Pelicans had their bid for a three-game winning streak thwarted with Monday's 115-99 home loss to Orlando despite a 39-point, 10-rebound effort by Anthony Davis, who has helped his team dominate the Timberwolves in recent years. The 24-year-old forward averaged 38.3 points in leading New Orleans to a three-game season series sweep last season, and the Pelicans have won 10 of the last 12 meetings overall.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS North (Minnesota), FS New Orleans

ABOUT THE TIMBERWOLVES (4-3): Veteran point guard Jeff Teague had some slight bumps in the road getting started this season but he's picked it up of late and is proving his value in tight games. The Wake Forest product has back-to-back double-doubles after recording season highs of 23 points and 11 assists at Miami, and he chipped in six steals to tie a career high. Teague is averaging 17.3 points, 8.5 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 2.5 steals in Minnesota's four wins, compared to 10.3, 6.3, two and 1.3 in its three losses.

ABOUT THE PELICANS (3-4): New Orleans ranks in the bottom third in the NBA in scoring defense (109.7), field-goal percentage defense (46.2) and 3-point percentage defense (38.2) after allowing the Magic to control matters Monday night. "We sucked," coach Alvin Gentry told reporters. "I wish there was another way to put it. We didn't close out to shooters, they drove the basketball any time they wanted to. ... It was lack of effort. I didn't think that we did a very good job of just digging in." Big man DeMarcus Cousins also had his worst offensive effort of the season with 12 points on 5-of-14 shooting and six turnovers in 39 minutes.

                      BUZZER BEATERS

                      1. Wiggins is averaging 24 points on 47.8 percent shooting on the road, compared to 14 points on 34.9 at home.

                      2. Pelicans PG Jrue Holiday is shooting 54.7 percent from the field over the last five games.

                      3. Towns scored at least 33 points in two of the three meetings last season and was held to nine - his only single-digit effort - in the other.

                      PREDICTION: Timberwolves 114, Pelicans 110

                          Preview: Raptors at Nuggets

                          Gracenote
                          Oct 31, 2017

The Toronto Raptors continue their longest road trip of the season Wednesday night at the Denver Nuggets, who will be opening up their longest homestand. The Raptors are 2-2 thus far on a six-game trip after topping Portland 99-85 on Monday behind another solid effort by star guard DeMar DeRozan.

He scored 25 points - his fifth straight outing with at least 24 following an 11-point effort in the season opener - and running mate Kyle Lowry chipped in a season-high 19 points to go along with 10 assists. DeRozan had a pair of 30-point games in two wins over the Nuggets last season and will be looking to take advantage of a Denver squad that allowed New York Knicks star forward Kristaps Porzingis to go off for 38 points in a 116-110 loss. The setback left the Nuggets with a 2-2 mark on their first major road trip of the season and sent them home for six straight on a down note, although the fact that they rallied from a 22-point halftime deficit to take a brief third-quarter lead provided a slight positive. "We were into them. We were causing confusion," guard Jamal Murray told reporters of the comeback. "That is what turned them over so much. We need to have that in the first half from the jump."

TV: 9 p.m. ET, TSN (Toronto), Altitude (Denver)

ABOUT THE RAPTORS (4-2): Toronto held Portland to six points in the second quarter - including one basket in the closing seconds - with the reserves doing the bulk of the work, which was not lost on the rest of the team. "They did something big for us holding them to one field goal throughout the whole quarter," DeRozan told reporters of the bench. "It gave us a great opportunity to go out there and pull out this win." Lucas Nogueira returned from an ankle injury to provide 17 points, nine rebounds and five blocks, while fellow center Jonas Valanciunas missed his fourth straight game with a similar ailment.

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (3-4): Denver outscored its last two opponents in the third quarter by a 78-40 margin but in both games it trailed at the half, and it entered Tuesday ranked 26th in the NBA in first-half scoring margin (-4.4). "We played with an attack mentality (in the third quarter), like we had nothing to lose," coach Michael Malone told reporters Monday. "That got us back in the game. You don't want to get down by 20 before you start playing that way." Forward Paul Millsap was 2-for-13 from the floor and is shooting 33.3 percent over a four-game stretch.

                          BUZZER BEATERS

                          1. Denver came into Tuesday ranked ninth in the league in 3-point shooting (37.5 percent) while Toronto was 29th (29.9)

                          2. Murray is averaging 23 points over the last two games after he was held to single digits in four of the first five contests.

                          3. Raptors PF Serge Ibaka (knee) missed Monday's game and is day-to-day.

                          PREDICTION: Raptors 103, Nuggets 101
