Preview: Golden Knights at Maple Leafs

    Gracenote
    Nov 6, 2017

The first significant road trip in the history of the Vegas Golden Knights got off to a miserable start, but the club bounced back to end its first losing streak and hopes to make it two straight wins when it visits the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday. Vegas began its trek with three losses before escaping Ottawa on Saturday with a 5-4 triumph.

The Golden Knights scored three consecutive goals to take a 5-2 lead and managed to withstand a comeback attempt late in the third period to even their overall road record at 3-3-0. Toronto is beginning a three-game homestand after winning just once on its four-game trek and has dropped five of six overall contests. The Maple Leafs have allowed a total of 11 goals in their last two games, including a 6-4 setback in St. Louis on Saturday. Auston Matthews apparently is not allowing himself to be plagued by the sophomore jinx, as he has followed his Calder Trophy-winning season by recording 10 goals and 18 points - both team highs - in 15 contests.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountain (Vegas), Sportsnet Ontario (Toronto)

ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS (9-4-0): Maxime Lagace recorded his first career victory Saturday despite allowing four goals on 28 shots. The 24-year-old is Vegas' fourth starting goaltender already this season following injuries to Marc-Andre Fleury (concussion), Malcolm Subban (lower body) and Oscar Dansk (lower body). The team needed only 13 games in its initial season to register nine wins, matching the NHL record set in 1917-18 by the Montreal Canadiens.

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (8-7-0): Nazem Kadri is tied for second on the team with 11 points but has been kept off the scoresheet in each of his last four games. The 27-year-old is even with William Nylander, who has gone seven contests without a goal, and defenseman Morgan Rielly. James van Riemsdyk also is struggling to score as he enters Monday with a six-game goal-scoring drought after beginning the season with four in his first five contests.

    OVERTIME

    1. The Golden Knights went 3-for-5 on the power play against the Senators after scoring only twice on its first 22 opportunities on the road.

    2. Matthews leads Toronto with two game-winning goals, both of which were scored in overtime.

    3. Vegas, which is in the midst of a stretch during which it plays eight of nine contests away from home, concludes its six-game road trip Tuesday at Montreal.

PREDICTION: Maple Leafs 5, Golden Knights 2

        Preview: Blue Jackets at Rangers

        Gracenote
        Nov 6, 2017

The New York Rangers are beginning to find their form after a rough October and hope to build on a season-high three-game winning streak when they host the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday. The Rangers rallied for a win over Vegas at home before earning a pair of hard-fought overtime victories at Tampa Bay and Florida as they prepared for a three-game homestand.

“We’re on our way,” New York defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk told reporters after scoring twice in the 5-4 triumph at Florida on Saturday. “We don’t want to sit back and think that we’re in the clear here. We have to make sure that we’re building. … We just have to keep this effort consistent and we’ll start getting a lot of wins.” The Rangers are 5-2-2 in their last nine contests and will be tested by the Blue Jackets, who have picked up points in five of their last six games after rallying from a two-goal deficit to earn one in Saturday's 5-4 shootout loss at Tampa Bay. “I thought we were much better in the third (period),” Columbus coach John Tortorella told reporters. “When you’re down by a couple, it releases you a little bit more. But I want us to do that right from the get-go.” Artemi Panarin scored his only goal of the season as the Blue Jackets defeated the Rangers 3-1 on Oct. 13 in a game that featured 81 shots.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Columbus), MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (9-4-1): Defenseman Seth Jones registered a goal and an assist on Saturday to tie for the team lead of 11 points with Panarin, who has registered 19 shots in his last five games but managed just one point - an assist. Brandon Dubinsky (four points in 14 games) scored his first goal of the season Saturday and told reporters, “Hopefully, this opens the gate a little bit for me.” Sergei Bobrovsky is just 6-9-2 lifetime against the Rangers despite posting a win last month and, with another game on Tuesday against Nashville, could be rested in favor of backup Joonas Korpisalo.

ABOUT THE RANGERS (6-7-2): New York’s offense has perked up during its revival, producing 22 goals in the last five games while the power play has gone 4-for-14 over the last four contests. Michael Grabner has recorded four of his five goals over the last five games while Mika Zibanejad and J.T. Miller top the team with 14 points apiece - one better than Shattenkirk, who is riding a four-game point streak. “I think like the rest of our team, (Shattenkirk’s game) is rounding out,” coach Alain Vigneault told reporters. “Kevin is starting to feel real comfortable.”

        OVERTIME

        1. Columbus LW Matt Calvert left Saturday’s game after taking a hard hit from Tampa Bay’s Dan Girardi and is not expected to play against the Rangers.

        2. New York LW Rick Nash, who leads the team with 53 shots, has registered two goals and three assists over his last four contests.

        3. Blue Jackets D Gabriel Carlsson (upper body) was activated while RW Cam Atkinson (hip) was placed on injured reserve Sunday.

PREDICTION: Blue Jackets 4, Rangers 3

            Preview: Coyotes at Capitals

            Gracenote
            Nov 6, 2017

The Washington Capitals have won back-to-back contests for the first time since opening the season with two straight victories and look to continue their revival when the Arizona Coyotes pay them a visit on Monday. Washington coach Barry Trotz told reporters his team is starting to create its own identity after earning one-goal wins over the New York Islanders on Thursday and Boston two days later.

“We needed that,” Capitals center Lars Eller told the Washington Post after the 3-2 triumph at Boston. “We don’t want to be chasing in the standings for the whole season. We’ve got a good stretch now where I think we can put some wins together.” The Capitals are over .500 for the first time in more than two weeks (7-6-1) and will try to build on that against the Coyotes, who have won two of their last four after beginning the season with an 11-game drought. Antti Raanta turned aside 36 shots in his second game back from injured reserve as Arizona knocked off Carolina 2-1 in a shootout on Saturday, and his next appearance will be the 100th of his NHL career. Coyotes center Clayton Keller is the early Calder Trophy favorite after notching 10 goals and six assists in the first 15 games.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona, NBCSN Washington

ABOUT THE COYOTES (2-12-1): Raanta told reporters he felt healthy after colliding with Carolina's Derek Ryan in overtime while taking a “journey” from his crease. “I thought that was a great game for him,” teammate Brad Richardson told reporters of Raanta, who stopped 20-of-21 shots in the third period and overtime. Max Domi has not scored a goal since the season opener but has notched nine assists and 10 points to place second on the team behind Keller, while Richardson has assists in two consecutive games.

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (7-6-1): The third line of Eller, Chandler Stephenson and Tom Wilson has registered 12 points over the last four games, including four in Saturday’s victory. “That whole line is playing really well,” Trotz told reporters. “I like what they’re doing. Number one is, they’re working. … Right now, I can play them against anybody, which is a real good feeling as a coach.” Captain Alex Ovechkin scored for the first time in six games Saturday to give him a team-high 11 goals, and he shares the top spot in scoring with Evgeny Kuznetsov at 16 points.

            OVERTIME

            1. Arizona has scored the first goal of the game an NHL-high 11 times in 15 contests but is just 2-8-1 in those situations.

            2. Kuznetsov is two points shy of 200 for his career and Washington C Jay Beagle is one away from 100.

            3. The Coyotes entered Sunday leading the league with 392 hits and ranking seventh in blocks (213).

                Preview: Jets at Stars

                Gracenote
                Nov 5, 2017

The Dallas Stars were not happy about losing at Winnipeg last week, but look for a different result when they host the Jets in a matchup of Central Division rivals on Monday. The Jets took a 5-2 victory on Thursday as Mark Scheifele recorded a hat trick, but Dallas - which concluded a five-game road trip with that defeat - showed they were ready to play on home ice Saturday by scoring four first-period goals en route to a 5-1 victory over Buffalo.

“I feel like this was a really good team game, probably the best 60 minutes we’ve played so far this year,” Dallas defenseman John Klingberg told reporters after recording three assists Saturday. The Stars are 5-1-0 at home entering the middle contest of a three-game homestand, but have struggled against Winnipeg while losing the last five meetings. The Jets’ three-game winning streak ended with a 5-4 overtime loss Saturday to Montreal as they blew a two-goal third-period lead. “Obviously when you have a 4-2 lead with 10 minutes left in the third, you want to close that out,” Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey told the media afterward.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, TSN3 (Winnipeg), FSN Southwest (Dallas)

ABOUT THE JETS (7-3-3): Winnipeg, which has points in 10 of its past 11 contests, kicks off a three-game road trip after giving up three power-play goals Saturday. Connor Hellebuyck kept the Jets in Saturday’s game by making 45 saves, and his 7-0-2 record makes him the only goalie in the league with at least nine starts who is undefeated in regulation. Center Blake Wheeler has recorded four goals with five assists in his past four games after scoring once and setting up another Saturday.

ABOUT THE STARS (8-6-0): Dallas lead the NHL in converting power plays, scoring on 32.5 percent, but did not have a power-play opportunity against the Jets on Thursday. Center Tyler Seguin recorded a goal and an assist Saturday, and the team leader in goals (eight) and points (15) has at least one point in three consecutive games. Ben Bishop gets the start in goal Monday, looking to atone for allowing four goals on 26 shots against Winnipeg and losing for the second time in his past three starts.

                OVERTIME

                1. Dallas placed F Brett Ritchie (upper-body) on injured reserve, and with Radek Faska and Tyler Pitilick doubtful with injuries, the Stars are expected to promote a forward on Monday.

                2. Winnipeg F Patrik Laine, who has scored in back-to-back games after a four-game pointless streak, boasts nine goals in six career games against Dallas.

                3. Jets F Adam Lowry, who has missed the past nine games with an upper-body injury, is probable to return to the lineup Monday.

                PREDICTION: Stars 4, Jets 3

                            Preview: Red Wings at Canucks

                            Nov 6, 2017

Rookie Brock Boeser hopes to follow up his first career hat trick with another big performance when the Vancouver Canucks host the Detroit Red Wings on Monday. Boeser, the 23rd pick in the 2015 draft, scored three goals in a 4-2 victory over Pittsburgh on Saturday and leads the team with 13 points in just 10 games while playing primarily with youngsters Bo Horvat and Sven Baertschi.

“I’m not worried about personal stats. I’m worried about how our team plays,” Boeser, who has notched 18 points in 19 NHL contests, told Sportsnet. “We’ve got a really good group and I think the way we play is really successful. We just have to keep it up.” The Canucks have earned points in six of their last seven games (5-1-1) as they prepare to play the Red Wings, who produced one of their finest performances of the season Sunday with a 4-0 victory at Edmonton. Detroit has won three of its last four after enduring a six-game losing streak and Anthony Mantha has played a big part in the turnaround with three goals and two assists in that span, including a tally in each of his last three contests. The Red Wings may be without Gustav Nyquist, who is considered day-to-day after going down with a lower-body injury in the first period on Sunday.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, Sportsnet Pacific (Vancouver)

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (7-7-1): Mantha’s scoring surge has tied him for the team lead in points (13) with defenseman Mike Green and linemate Dylan Larkin, who was kept off the scoresheet Sunday despite recording 10 shots. Nyquist scored three goals in four games before going down with the injury and could be replaced in the lineup by David Booth or Luke Witkowski. Detroit has recorded power-play goals in each of its last two games after going 2-for-27 with the man advantage over the previous nine contests.

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (7-4-2): Vancouver managed fewer than two goals in three of four games before scoring four against the Penguins on Saturday on a season-low 21 shots but took advantage of quality opportunities. “The last two games before this, we were hurting for goals,” Horvat told reporters. “To finally get rewarded for our chances felt great.” Horvat and Baertschi each own 11 points to tie for second on the team while Derek Dorsett leads the way with six goals, but has been kept off the scoresheet in each of the last three contests.

                            OVERTIME

                            1. Detroit LW Tomas Tatar has gone seven games without a point since scoring twice versus Washington and remains one shy of 200 for his career.

                            2. Vancouver’s Daniel (five points) and Henrik Sedin (three) logged season lows in ice time of 8:38 and 8:52, respectively, on Saturday.

                            3. The Canucks has earned at least one point in five of the last six meetings (3-1-2) but lost in overtime in each of the last two matchups in Vancouver.

PREDICTION: Canucks 3, Red Wings 2

I'm going to go against the red-hot Celtics in what I feel is a really tough spot for them. Boston comes in having won and covered in 8 straight games since their 0-2 start and this certainly feels like an inflated line given that Atlanta is laying just 3-poitns less at home than they were on the road at Cleveland yesterday. The Hawks pulled out a surprising 117-115 win over the Cavs as a 11-point dog to snap a 8-game losing streak. I look for them to carry over that momentum here against the Celtics, who will be playing in the 2nd game of a back-to-back set and third road game over the last 4 days. Even with the win over Cleveland, Atlanta's not a team that's going to get the juices flowing for Boston and I think they struggle to put this away and wouldn't be shocked if the Hawks pulled off the upset at home. Atlanta is 7-2 ATS in their last 9 following a SU win and Boston is 0-5 ATS in their last 5 when playing on 0 days rest. Give me the Hawks +8!
