With just three victories, this certainly hasn't been a season to remember for Florida as it gets ready to host a surprising UAB team on Saturday. The downtrodden Gators have lost five in a row after closing out the SEC slate with a 28-20 loss to South Carolina last weekend.

For the Gators, this matchup with UAB was expected to be a breather game before hosting rival Florida State next week. But the Blazers, who did not play a single down the last two years for financial reasons, have been more than competitive in their return to the gridiron with five wins in their last six games to become bowl-eligible and can set a single-season school record with a victory over Florida as it would be their eighth win as an FBS program. But despite being decimated by injuries and suspensions, as well as head-coaching uncertainty, the Gators don't figure to go down quietly as they are playing for pride in front of their home fans. "At this point, guys are not thinking about bowls or we cannot go to the bowl," interim coach Randy Shannon told reporters. "The only thing they're thinking about is coming back to the Swamp, two home games that they can go and play for their fans and friends and their family."

ABOUT UAB (7-3): Freshman running back Spencer Brown continues to move the chains and is the main thrust behind the Blazers averaging 210.5 rushing yards per game - second-best in Conference USA - as he has recorded six 100-yard performances and moved up to third on the team's single-season list with 1,177 yards. Junior quarterback A.J. Erdely ranks second with 451 rushing yards and has been a scoring machine, throwing for 13 touchdowns and running for 12 to put his name in the school record book for rushing scores by a signal-caller - breaking Joe Webb's single-season record of 11. Senior cornerback Darious Williams leads Conference USA in passes defended (14) but had his streak of four straight games with an interception - one of which he returned for a touchdown - come to an end last week at Texas-San Antonio.

ABOUT FLORIDA (3-6): Injuries continue to mount for the Gators, and starting quarterback Malik Zaire was the latest to get hit by the bug as he left last week's loss to South Carolina with a leg injury - opening the door once again for freshman Feleipe Franks, who came in and threw for 174 yards. A big issue for the Gators this year has been the health of the offensive line, which lost another member in Anthony Riles against South Carolina, prompting a shakeup of a unit that already has surrendered 30 sacks this season - tied for most in the SEC. The defense has had its problems against the run, and last week was no exception as South Carolina churned out 220 yards and scored four touchdowns - marking the fourth time in the last five games opponents have eclipsed the 200-yard mark.

No. 11 Penn State righted the ship after a two-game road losing streak and will put a 13-game home winning streak on the line in its finale at Beaver Stadium on Saturday against a reeling Nebraska squad. Narrow setbacks at Ohio State and Michigan State delivered a damaging blow to the Nittany Lions' chances in the College Football Playoff system, but they crawled back to No. 10 following a 35-6 win over Rutgers last week.

A strong finish against the Cornhuskers and the following week at slumping Maryland - as well as some chaos elsewhere - could push Penn State back into the Big Ten and CFP races. "I think we've all kind of grown and learned through last year and this year, and our best model to keep the team on the path that I think we need to be on is taking the 1-0 mentality and not focusing on anything else, trying to limit as much of the noise in the conversations as we possibly can," coach James Franklin told reporters. "I feel good about that. We've done that since (the loss to Michigan State)." Nebraska opened Big Ten play with two wins but it has dropped four of five ever since and was embarrassed at Minnesota last week. Athletic Director Bill Moos said this week that head coach Mike Riley "deserves to finish the 2017 season," which could result in no bowl game for just the third time since 1968.

ABOUT NEBRASKA (4-6, 3-4 Big Ten): Quarterback Tanner Lee is in concussion protocol after leaving the 54-21 loss at Minnesota, which could give freshman Patrick O'Brien his first start. "Patrick is a talented guy that has never really taken a back seat and just floated back there as a backup quarterback," Riley told the media. "He's been engaged and really, really wants to be a player." O'Brien, who has family in Pennsylvania and once attended a camp at Penn State, relieved Lee last week and completed 12-of-18 passes for 137 yards.

ABOUT PENN STATE (8-2, 5-2): Trace McSorley threw for 214 yards and two touchdowns last week and had a team-high 44 rushing yards as star running back Saquon Barkley (35 yards on 14 carries) continued to be bottled up, but Franklin has challenged his offensive line to open things up with a more physical, nasty style. "I actually met with some of the young linemen the other day about it, that they were brought in and told that," Franklin told reporters. "They understood that, and they need to bring that, bring that in practice and bring that in the games." Barkley, who is 101 yards away from his third 1,000-yard season, did find the end zone twice last week and needs two more rushing scores to tie Lydell Mitchell (38) atop the school's career list.

One year after LSU fired coach Les Miles during the 2016 season, Tennessee decided to change coaches in the midst of its 2017 campaign. The Volunteers axed Butch Jones last weekend and will turn to Brady Hoke for the final two games, beginning with Saturday's home contest against No. 21 LSU.

Hoke, the former Michigan coach, was in his first season as defensive line coach of the Volunteers, who have lost five of their last six games. “We will tweak some things because of the comfort level I have and how I would like to run a program," Hoke, whose team has averaged 15 points per game since back-to-back 42-point efforts by its opponents to begin the season, told reporters. The team lost 50-17 to Missouri last weekend, allowing the final 33 points while getting outgained overall 659-285. LSU, meanwhile, has won four of its last five contests, with the only loss in that stretch coming against current No. 1 Alabama.

ABOUT LSU (7-3, 4-2 SEC): Coach Ed Orgeron was the interim coach at USC in 2013 and held the same position at LSU last season, winning his first game on the sideline in each case. "I've been there," Orgeron told reporters this week. "They can't change much, obviously, but they're going to tweak some things." Derrius Guice ran for 147 yards and three touchdowns in last week's 33-10 triumph over Arkansas, while Danny Etling threw a pair of TD passes.

ABOUT TENNESSEE (4-6, 0-6): The Volunteers have used three different quarterbacks this season - the latest being Will McBride, who was 1-of-8 against Southern Miss two weeks ago before completing 50 percent of his passes with one touchdown and two interceptions last week. McBride led the team with 63 rushing yards last week and threw its first touchdown pass since Sept. 23. The Volunteers, who went 9-4 each of the previous two seasons, potentially still can reach the postseason with home victories Saturday and next weekend against Vanderbilt.
