Preview: Texas A&M at Ole Miss
    Gracenote
    Nov 15, 2017

Although Texas A&M quarterback Nick Starkel may have only started a total of two games in his college career, he has already experienced more than his fair share of disappointment and euphoria. Coming off a record-setting effort in his return to the starting lineup last weekend, the reigning SEC Freshman of the Week will take his shot at an encore performance Saturday when the Aggies visit Ole Miss.

Starkel's season was put on hold for nearly two months after only 13 passes when he broke his left ankle in Texas A&M's season-opening loss at UCLA, but he made his way onto the field on a part-time basis on Oct. 28 against Mississippi State and again on Nov. 4 versus Auburn. He returned to the lineup last week against New Mexico in scintillating fashion, finishing 21-of-30 for 416 yards and throwing for four touchdowns before taking a seat for the entire second half in a 55-14 rout. Although the Rebels' Jordan Ta'amu needed an entire game to do it, the junior signal-caller was slightly more productive than Starkel, posting 431 total yards and five total touchdowns in a 50-22 thumping of Louisiana. "Another good performance. It doesn't matter who you are playing, if you lead your team during the first five drives and score touchdowns, that's pretty impressive," first-year Ole Miss coach Matt Luke said about his junior field general.

    TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN2. LINE: Ole Miss -3.

ABOUT TEXAS A&M (6-4, 3-3 SEC): Starkel's 400-yard passing game was only the second by a freshman in school history and the second-highest total by a freshman behind Johnny Manziel's 453-yard outburst against Arkansas during his Heisman Trophy-winning season in 2012. Three Aggies topped 100 yards receiving in the same game for the first time in program history as a result of their quarterback's surgical dissection, as true freshmen Roshauud Paul (129 yards) and Jhamon Ausbon (105) joined junior Christian Kirk (120) as part of the history-making trio. Kirk also more than doubled his season total of 83 punt return yards entering the contest with a 90-yard TD return, making him the first Aggie with a kickoff and punt return touchdown in the same season since Carl Roaches in 1973.

ABOUT OLE MISS (5-5, 2-4): Sophomore A.J. Brown, who leads the conference in receptions (62), receiving yards (1,015) and receiving TDs (nine), tied Laquon Treadwell's school-record single-game mark of 14 catches last weekend and only needs 138 more yards to become the most productive single-season receiver in program history. "I should have thrown him a bubble (screen) or given him a flip to get him to 15 catches, so that was on me; a rookie mistake right there. I like the look in his eye. … He is really playing well for us," Luke said. Kicker Gary Wunderlich saw his streak of 19 straight games with at least one field goal snapped versus New Mexico, leaving him stuck on 62 field goals for his career - one shy of tying the school record.

    EXTRA POINTS

    1. Starkel has led Texas A&M to a touchdown on 14 of 29 drives this season.

    2. Last weekend, Ole Miss became only the fourth FBS team in last 20 seasons to have two different quarterbacks throw for 350 yards or more in at least three games in a season.

    3. The Rebels have scored on 95 percent of their red zone possessions, good for third in the SEC and seventh in FBS.

    PREDICTION: Texas A&M 45, Ole Miss 38

        Preview: Arizona at Oregon
        Gracenote
        Nov 15, 2017

One of the most exciting players in college football over the past six weeks, Arizona sophomore quarterback Khalil Tate has made the Wildcats must-see TV while becoming a surprising factor in the Heisman Trophy race. All eyes will be on Tate again Saturday as the Wildcats visit Oregon, which is hoping to have starting quarterback Justin Herbert back in the lineup for the first time since Sept. 30.

Tate ran his streak of 100-yard rushing games to six and finished with 206 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries in last Saturday’s 49-28 win over Oregon State as the Wildcats won for the fifth time in their last six games. The Los Angeles native ranks seventh in the nation in rushing (1,293 yards) and leads the Pac-12 in passing efficiency (155.5) despite not starting until the fifth game of the season. “No one has stopped him yet this year,” Oregon coach Willie Taggart told reporters. “He’s a heck of a talent. Big-time football player and is really good with the ball in his hand. Defensively we have to be disciplined and make sure we do a good job of wrapping up and have guys run to the ball.” Oregon, which can become bowl eligible with a win over Arizona or Oregon State, could receive a major boost if Herbert can return from a broken left collarbone that forced him to miss the last five games.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Pac-12 Network. LINE: Even

ABOUT ARIZONA (7-3, 5-2 Pac-12): The Wildcats ran for a school-record 534 yards and held onto their spot in second place in the Pac-12 South with a dominant win over Oregon State. Senior Zach Green has quietly rushed for nine touchdowns for Arizona, which was picked to finish last in the division after going 3-9 last season and now has the leading candidates for Pac-12 Coach of the Year (Rich Rodriguez) and Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year (Tate). Freshman linebacker Tony Fields II has a team-high 73 tackles to lead the defense, which ranks third nationally with 16 interceptions.

ABOUT OREGON (5-5, 2-5): The Ducks averaged 49.6 points in their first five games but have been stuck in neutral without Herbert, averaging 15 points and going 1-4 with freshman Braxton Burmeister under center. Herbert was clearly missed in a 38-3 loss to Washington before the bye week, when the Ducks were held to 31 yards passing. Even if Herbert is cleared to play, the Ducks figure to rely heavily on running back Royce Freeman, who surpassed the 100-yard mark for the 29th time in his career with 122 yards on 24 carries against the Huskies.

        EXTRA POINTS

        1. Oregon leads the all-time series 25-16, including 13-5 in Eugene.

        2. The Ducks are second in the Pac-12 in rushing defense at 129 yards per game.

        3. Arizona freshman S Scottie Young Jr. is expected to be available after missing last week’s game due to a knee injury.

        PREDICTION: Arizona 41, Oregon 34

            Preview: Boston College vs. Connecticut
            Gracenote
            Nov 15, 2017

Fenway Park will provide the stage when Boston College steps away from the *****s of the ACC schedule to take on Connecticut. This will be the 77th time that the Eagles play in the old ball yard, having dropped a three-point decision against Notre Dame two years ago to fall to 54-17-5 at Fenway.

Boston College enters this one needing one victory to gain bowl eligibility for the second straight year after a difficult 17-14 home loss to North Carolina State last week. "As we've had to do all year long, we've got to pick it up and keep going, keep rolling," Eagles coach Steve Addazio told reporters. "So that's what we've done since Game 1, and that's not going to change as we move forward." The Huskies have dropped three in a row by an average of 27.3 points and they are 0-11-2 against Boston College, including a 30-0 loss in Chestnut Hill a season ago. Junior David Pindell stepped in at quarterback for the injured Bryant Shirreffs last week at Central Florida and threw for two touchdowns and 201 yards in a 49-24 loss.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network. LINE: Boston College -21.5

ABOUT BOSTON COLLEGE (5-5): The Eagles lost redshirt freshman quarterback Anthony Brown to a leg injury that will end his season, opening the door for senior Darius Wade to step in and lead the offense. Wade has completed just 56-of-109 passes in his career, only two of which have gone for touchdowns. Boston College will continue to lean on freshman running back AJ Dillon, who added 196 rushing yards and a TD in Saturday's loss and enters this week ranked second in the ACC in rushing (1,039 yards).

ABOUT CONNECTICUT (3-7): Pindell offers a dual threat under center and he ran for 96 yards and a score last week, but he knows that using his legs should usually be a secondary option. "The main thing I take from the Central Florida game is staying in the pocket and feeling more comfortable stepping into my throws," Pindell told the Hartford Courant. "There were a couple throws I wish I could get back, a couple that were wide open. I could have made big plays in that game, but my being off-balance and not staying in the pocket, properly delivering the throw." Junior Hergy Mayala is the top target with 34 catches - five for TDs - and 519 yards.

            EXTRA POINTS

            1. UConn enters the week ranked 128th out of 129 FBS teams in total defense (550.8 yards allowed per game).

            2. Dillon is averaging 176.5 rushing yards over the last four games.

            3. The Huskies were limited to 121 total yards and eight first downs in last year's meeting.

                    Nov 15, 2017

Wake Forest hopes to parlay a record-setting offensive performance into its third win in four games when it hosts No. 22 North Carolina State on Saturday. The Demon Deacons racked up a school-record 734 yards of offense, erasing a 14-point halftime deficit and routing Syracuse 64-43 last Saturday, becoming bowl-eligible for the second straight season after not reaching one since 2011.

“You have to be consistent to be a good offense, so we have to do it all over again this week,” Wake Forest senior tight end Cam Serigne told reporters after recording seven catches for 119 yards and three touchdowns versus Syracuse. Demon Deacons senior quarterback John Wolford is also playing at a high level, accounting for a school record-tying six touchdowns last week to give him a school-record 69 for his career, eclipsing the old mark of 65 set by Riley Skinner in 2009. The Wolfpack edged Boston College 17-14 last week after back-to-back losses to No. 9 Notre Dame 35-14 and No. 3 Clemson 38-31. "It's always nice to get a winning taste back," North Carolina State coach Dave Doeren told reporters. "Our goal at the end of the week was to try to get to seven wins in the ACC, which has never been done (in school history). It's a great goal, a lofty goal."

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA STATE (7-3, 5-1 ACC): Senior defensive end Bradley Chubb is a semifinalist for the Walter Camp Player of the Year award -- one of four defensive players on the 15-man list. Chubb, who has a school-record 57.5 tackles for loss, leads the country in that category at 2.4 per game and his 10 sacks are fourth-most nationally. Junior quarterback Ryan Finley (15 touchdowns, four interceptions, 63.5 percent completion rate) failed to throw a TD for the first time this season against BC in a game played in sub-freezing temperatures.

ABOUT WAKE FOREST (6-4, 3-3): Junior running back Matt Colburn rushed for a career-high 237 yards and two touchdowns against Syracuse - the most by a Demon Deacon since Josh Harris went for 241 in 2010 - and is averaging 163.7 yards in his last three games. Wolford boasts a team-leading 10 rushing scores and has 20 TD passes against three interceptions while completing 65.2 percent of his passes. Senior linebacker Grant Dawson has recorded team highs of 47 unassisted and 70 total tackles, while senior lineman Duke Ejiofor's 6.5 sacks are tied for fourth in the ACC.

                    EXTRA POINTS

                    1. Senior TE Jaylen Samuels (nine) and junior RB Nyheim Hines (seven) have combined for 16 of the Wolfpack's 22 rushing touchdowns.

                    2. Serigne has eight TDs this season and 20 for his career, tied for the most in ACC history among tight ends with Virginia's Heath Miller (2002-04) and Virginia Tech's Bucky Hodges (2014-16).

                    3. N.C. State leads the series - its longest against any school - 66-38-6, winning the last three meetings by a combined 64 points. The home team is 17-3 in the last 20 meetings.

Two teams fighting to gain bowl eligibility square off Saturday, when Vanderbilt hosts Missouri for a Southeastern Conference clash. The Tigers are looking for their fifth straight victory, while the Commodores hope to break through for their first win in SEC play.

Missouri’s season appeared to be in shambles when it lost five straight to fall to 1-5, but Barry Odom’s team has rallied for four consecutive blowout wins – including lopsided home victories over Florida and Tennessee over the last two weeks – and needs just one more triumph to be eligible for a bowl. “They’ve been through a lot,” Odom told reporters. “That was one of our goals that we talked about, having a chance to play after the regular season is over. You get to 1-0 this week, and that opens a whole other world of opportunities for us.” The odds are longer for the Commodores, who have dropped six of seven since a 3-0 start and need to close out the regular season with wins over Missouri and at Tennessee to become bowl-eligible. The Tigers beat the Commodores 26-17 last season for the first of their two SEC wins.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, SEC Network. LINE: Missouri -8.5

ABOUT MISSOURI (5-5, 2-4 SEC): The Tigers’ turnaround has revolved around a vastly improved defense rising up to complement one of the nation’s best offenses. Missouri shut out Tennessee in the second half and has recorded 38 tackles for loss during its winning streak to take over the SEC lead in that category. Quarterback Drew Lock leads the nation with 35 touchdown passes and has tossed at least three in six straight games, but the Tigers’ ground game has rolled up at least 175 rushing yards in four straight contests - gaining 433 last week against Tennessee.

ABOUT VANDERBILT (4-6, 0-6): The Commodores’ pass defense has been excellent, holding opponents under 200 yards per game, but they’ve been gashed by the run. The offensive numbers are pedestrian, but Vanderbilt has talent at the skill positions, with running back Ralph Webb and quarterback Kyle Shurmur providing balance. Shurmur has thrown 21 touchdown passes, one shy of matching Whit Taylor’s single-season school record, and seven interceptions.

                        EXTRA POINTS

                        1. Missouri is trying to become the 13th team in FBS history and the second ever in the SEC to become bowl-eligible after starting 1-5.

                        2. Vanderbilt has averaged 10 tackles for loss in its four wins.

                        3. Missouri has scored 45 or more points in four straight games for the first time in program history.

USC has already clinched the Pac-12 South Division title, but the No. 10 Trojans should still have plenty of motivation against UCLA at the Los Angeles Coliseum on Saturday evening. USC leads the all-time series 48-31-7 and has won the past two meetings and 14 of the past 18, but the Bruins are more desperate as they enter one victory shy of becoming bowl-eligible after missing out on the postseason last year.

USC quarterback Sam Darnold seems to have turned the corner after a rough first two months of the season. He has 12 touchdown passes and two interceptions in the past five games to improve to 18-3 as a starter for the Trojans. Darnold said after the 38-24 win against Colorado last weekend that he's developed better rhythm with his receivers, and he's spreading the ball around effectively too, hitting four different receivers for at least 59 yards last week. UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen is also playing better of late following a four-game stretch in which he threw eight touchdown passes, but was intercepted eight times.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ABC. LINE: USC -16.

ABOUT UCLA (5-5, 3-4 Pac-12): Rosen should be fired up to play well against the Trojans after missing last season's game with an injury and turning the ball over three times as a freshman in a 40-21 loss inside the Coliseum in 2015. Two of the top three receivers for the Bruins have had their seasons ended by injuries, leaving wide receiver Jordan Lasley as the prime target for Rosen. Lasley came off a three-game suspension last week and caught seven passes for a career-high 162 yards and a touchdown in a 44-37 win against visiting Arizona State.

ABOUT USC (9-2, 7-1): Don't be surprised if the Trojans lean heavily on junior running back Ronald Jones II, who has combined for 183 rushing yards and two touchdowns in two games against UCLA. The Bruins continue to have the worst rushing defense in the FBS at 302.3 rushing yards allowed per game this season, and they gave up 294 last week against Arizona State. Jones hasn't been slowing down of late either, piling up three of his four best rushing efforts on the season in the past three weeks and scoring six touchdowns.

                            EXTRA POINTS

                            1. USC has won 15 straight games at the Coliseum.

                            2. The Trojans have their bye next week, meaning they'll finish their regular season at the earliest date since 2001.

                            3. UCLA is averaging 6.5 yards a play, its most since averaging 6.81 yards in 1998.

                            PREDICTION: UCLA 42, USC 41

The accolades keep rolling in for Stanford running back Bryce Love, who jumped back into the Heisman Trophy race with a stellar performance in last week’s stunning win over Washington. Love looks to push the 23rd-ranked Cardinal closer to a Pac-12 North title on Saturday against visiting California, which has lost seven in a row in the historic series between the teams.

Love aggravated his injured left ankle in last Saturday’s 30-22 win over Washington but still rushed for 166 yards and three touchdowns against a Huskies' defense that had allowed three rushing touchdowns all season. “I don’t know if you can ask anything more from a football player,” coach David Shaw told reporters. “He played on one leg and played a phenomenal game. I’m not going to mention any awards, but if he doesn’t win ’em all, then I don’t know what’s going on. This guy is unbelievable.” The dynamic 5-10 junior, who originally injured his ankle against Oregon on Oct. 14, leads the nation in rushing at 180.22 yards per game, averages 8.96 yards per carry and has 11 runs of at least 50 yards. Love figures to receive another heavy workload against Cal, which needs to beat either Stanford or UCLA to become bowl eligible for the second time since 2011.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FOX. LINE: Stanford -16

ABOUT CAL (5-5, 2-5 Pac-12): Junior Patrick Laird, who came to Cal as a walk-on and began the season listed third on the depth chart, recorded career highs with 214 rushing yards on 33 carries in a 37-23 win over Oregon State before the bye week. Quarterback Ross Bowers helped the Bears snap a two-game losing skid by going 24-of-30 for 259 yards and two touchdowns in the victory. Linebacker Jordan Kunaszyk has 58 tackles over the last six games to lead the Bears’ improved defense, which is allowing 29.4 points per game and 4.3 rushing yards per carry.

ABOUT STANFORD (7-3, 6-2): Love has 15 rushing touchdowns to lead the Cardinal, which can win the Pac-12 North title with the combination of a win over Cal and a victory by Washington over Washington State on Nov. 25. The offense received a boost against the Huskies from sophomore quarterback K.J. Costello, who threw for a career-high 211 yards without a turnover in his third career start and connected with J.J. Arcega-Whiteside five times for 130 yards. Stanford’s defense is allowing 21.4 points with Harrison Phillips (team-high 7.1 tackles per game) and safety Justin Reid (five interceptions) leading the way.

                                1. Saturday marks the 120th meeting between the teams with Stanford holding a 62-46-11 lead.

                                2. Cal has lost 11 consecutive Pac-12 road games dating back to Sept. 26, 2015 at Washington.

                                3. Stanford is 21-6 in the month of November under Shaw.
