    Preview: Cavaliers at Pistons

    Gracenote
    Nov 20, 2017

The Cleveland Cavaliers have mostly been picking on sub-.500 teams during their four-game winning streak but face a stiffer test Monday night when they visit the Detroit Pistons. The Cavaliers sent the Los Angeles Clippers to their seventh straight loss Friday, although they had to overcome a 15-point deficit and win in overtime 118-113.

"We're built for when the game slows down. And late in games is when the game slows down," Cleveland veteran Dwyane Wade told reporters. "And that's kind of where we are good, so that's what we're built for." LeBron James had 39 points, 14 rebounds and six assists while making four 3-pointers for the second straight game to lead Cleveland, which has won three in a row on the road. That streak will be up against a Pistons squad that has won nine of 12 and comes in on a high note following a 100-97 win at Minnesota on Sunday. Andre Drummond's 20 points and 16 rebounds led the way, while Reggie Jackson scored three times in the final 90 seconds to fuel a late comeback.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Cleveland), FSN Detroit

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (9-7): Iman Shumpert is expected to miss about a week of action due to knee pain, which should give a starting spot to veteran Jose Calderon. The 36-year-old Calderon has seven points, five assists and five turnovers in 48 minutes on the season and hasn't produced a basket since Oct. 25. James and Wade - who had 23 points and 11 rebounds Friday - will also get plenty of time running the offense.
ABOUT THE PISTONS (11-5): Drummond's double-double was his 12th of the season and it came despite having a hard fall in the third quarter that prompted a visit to the sidelines. Avery Bradley chipped in 18 points and finished Detroit's three-game road trip with an average of 20.7 while making 11-of-18 from 3-point range. The Pistons are returning home for the first time since a 5-0 homestand Nov. 3-12.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Cavaliers PF Kevin Love is averaging 21.8 points over his last six games and that includes a six-point outing.

    2. Drummond is averaging 17.9 rebounds over a seven-game stretch.

    3. The Central Division rivals split four meetings last season, with the home team winning each time.

    PREDICTION: Cavaliers 105, Pistons 101

        Preview: Pacers at Magic

        Gracenote
        Nov 19, 2017

The Orlando Magic, who started the season with such promise, suddenly must begin to pull themselves out of a downward spiral when they host the surging Indiana Pacers on Monday night. The Magic won six of their first eight games in impressive fashion and have since fallen back to .500 after losing the last four, including an embarrassing 125-85 setback against Utah on Saturday.

Orlando coach Frank Vogel is looking for his team to respond after finishing a road trip with three straight losses and then shooting 38.3 percent from the field while turning the ball over 16 times at home versus the Jazz. “Monday is a must-win for this group,” Magic point guard Elfrid Payton told the Orlando Sentinel. “Obviously, it’s still early. We still have time to get better. But internally I feel like we’ve got to show some fight.” Indiana has won four of its last five games, including a huge 120-95 victory at Miami on Sunday in which it shot 60 percent from the field and drained 11-of-23 from 3-point range. “The camaraderie on this team is incredible,” Pacers center Myles Turner told the Indianapolis Star. “We get along so well on and off the court. I don’t even think we’ve scratched the surface yet.”

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBATV, FSN Indiana, FSN Florida (Orlando)

ABOUT THE PACERS (9-8): Bojan Bogdanovic led the way with 26 points Sunday and Turner, who missed seven games with a concussion from Oct. 20-Nov. 1, scored a season-high 25 on 11-of-14 shooting from the field. “I didn’t have such a great game last game,” Turner told the Star of his seven-point output in Friday’s win against Detroit. “It’s all about bouncing back. This was a statement game for me.” Indiana produced their largest margin of victory Sunday without a big game from leading scorer Victor Oladipo (22.6), who had 15 points on 6-of-15 shooting with four turnovers.

ABOUT THE MAGIC (8-8): Nikola Vucevic, who averages 16.8 points and 7.1 rebounds, told reporters Orlando must get back to playing together and enjoying the game. “Over-dribbling, over-trying to get stuff instead of just playing simple basketball, like we did earlier in the year, it just affects us little by little,” the 7-0 center said. “It just takes away from our energy. It’s like it’s taking little bites (out of us).” Guard Evan Fournier leads the team in scoring (19.2) and makes 42 percent of his 3-pointers while forward Aaron Gordon (17.8 points, 7.8 rebounds) has been consistent.

        BUZZER BEATERS

        1. Indiana PG Darren Collison had 12 points in Sunday’s win and is averaging 19.3 over his last three.

        2. Orlando PF Marreese Speights is averaging 12.3 points off the bench the last four contests.

        3. The Pacers triumphed in all four meetings last season, winning twice at Orlando by an average of 12.5 points.

        PREDICTION: Magic 110, Pacers 98

            Preview: Jazz at 76ers

            Gracenote
            Nov 19, 2017

The Philadelphia 76ers showed they could play with the defending NBA champions and maybe even play better -- at least for one half. The 76ers will try to put a full four quarters together when they continue a six-game homestand by hosting the Utah Jazz on Monday.

Philadelphia put up 47 first-quarter points against the Golden State Warriors on Saturday and were up 74-52 at the half before surrendering 47 points in the third quarter and going on to suffer a 124-116 setback. "You've got to play for 48 minutes," 76ers center Joel Embiid told reporters. "A basketball game is 48 minutes, so you've got to come out and play for 48 minutes. You can't just play for 24 minutes." The Utah Jazz put together their best 48 minutes of the season with a 125-85 win at Orlando on Saturday that gave them a chance to come away even on the four-game road trip after dropping the first two at New York and Brooklyn. "It's nice to see some of the work and the emphasis that we've been doing begin to show some results," Utah coach Quin Snyder told reporters. "I think our team earned the right to play well (Saturday)."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Utah), NBCSN Philadelphia

ABOUT THE JAZZ (7-10): Utah dropped seven of its previous eight games before putting it all together against the Magic, including a 104-97 home loss to the 76ers on Nov. 7. The Jazz were 0-6 on the road prior to Saturday and surrendered an average of 112 points in their first two games of the current trip - a rarity for a team that led the NBA in scoring defense last season. “It was a team effort defensively,” power forward Derick Favors told the Salt Lake Tribune of Saturday's triumph. “We knew they were a good team. They have a lot of players who can make plays offensively. So, we tried to make them take tough shots and keep them out of the paint and contest every shot. We limited them in transition as well."

ABOUT THE 76ERS (8-7): Philadelphia began a five-game west coast trip with that win in Utah on ended it with a pair of wins in Los Angeles, and the fatigue of coming back across the country might have gotten to the young squad on Saturday. "I always worry when you come back from a West Coast road trip," 76ers coach Brett Brown told reporters. "Some of it's probably paranoia. I bet some of it's fact. We're not going to make any excuses. We put ourselves in a position to compete." One player who didn't show signs of fatigue was rookie point guard Ben Simmons, who scored 23 points on 11-of-15 shooting and added 12 assists for his 10th double-double.

            BUZZER BEATERS

            1. Jazz SG Rodney Hood is averaging 26 points over the last three games, including a pair of 30-point efforts.

            2. 76ers F Dario Saric is 10-of-35 from the floor over the last three games, including 2-of-16 from 3-point range.

            3. Philadelphia snapped a nine-game losing streak in the series with the win at Utah on Nov. 7.

            PREDICTION: 76ers 108, Jazz 99

                Preview: Clippers at Knicks

                Gracenote
                Nov 19, 2017

The New York Knicks are coming off their worst loss of the season but are playing well enough overall to consider that just a blip on the path to contention for a playoff spot. The Los Angeles Clippers, who visit the Knicks on Monday, are coming off a bad loss of their own and are making that a pattern with a slide that reached eight in a row.

New York is 5-1 in its last six home games but looked like a different team on the road as star forward Kristaps Porzingis struggled and the team fell 107-84 at Toronto. "We realized this game that the energy we get from the home crowd, we're not going to get that on the road," Porzingis told reporters after the loss. "You got to find the energy from the inside." The Clippers aren't finding that energy at home or on the road and are losers of 10 of 11 since beginning the season with four consecutive wins. Los Angeles put up a good fight in the opener of the five-game road trip at Cleveland on Friday before suffering a 118-113 loss and could not find that level of fight while matching a season low for points scored with a 102-87 loss at Charlotte the next night.
TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FSN Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (5-10): Los Angeles is allowing an average of 112.1 points during the eight-game slide but played the last five of those contests without NBA All-Defensive First Team point guard Patrick Beverley, who could return from a knee injury on Monday. The return of Beverley won't solve all the problems for the Clippers, who shot 39.8 percent from the floor in Saturday's loss. Starting guard Austin Rivers went 3-of-14 from the field in that setback and is shooting just 37.2 percent from the floor on the season, including 35.7 percent during the eight-game slide.
ABOUT THE KNICKS (8-7): Porzingis went 3-of-13 from the floor in Friday's loss at Toronto and is 18-for-53 over the last three games, during which New York is 1-2. "Maybe we all got spoiled," Knicks coach Jeff Hornacek told reporters of Porzingis. "Guys aren't going to go 14-for-23 every game. But teams are playing a little bit differently. Sometimes they're doubling, sometimes the guy cuts, that guy is trying to stop him and double him. But some nights you're going to make shots, some nights you're not. He still draws a lot of attention, which helps the other guys." Porzingis is averaging 30.1 points on 51.9 percent shooting at home as opposed to 22 points on 38 percent on the road.

                BUZZER BEATERS

                1. Clippers SF Danilo Gallinari (left glute strain) sat out the last six games and remains day-to-day.

                2. Knicks SF Tim Hardaway Jr. (foot) left Friday's game and is questionable for Monday.

                3. Los Angeles took the last 10 meetings -- eight by double digits.

                PREDICTION: Knicks 110, Clippers 106

                    Preview: Trail Blazers at Grizzlies

                    Gracenote
                    Nov 19, 2017

The Memphis Grizzlies are losers of four straight and are hoping to turn things around against the last team they managed to beat - the Portland Trail Blazers. The Grizzlies earned a 98-97 win in Portland on Nov. 7 but surrendered an average of 110.5 points in the last four contests to drop under .500.

Memphis was solid defensively at home against Houston on Saturday, holding one of the league's top scoring offenses to 44.9 percent shooting - but could not figure out a way to get anything done at the other end in a 105-83 loss. "We couldn’t get organized in the basic sets that we run, for whatever reason," Grizzlies coach David Fizdale told reporters. "I know a couple of the guys that are just getting back are running around with their heads cut off a little bit. We just couldn’t get organized." The Trail Blazers are moving in the opposite direction with wins in three of their last four games but are just 2-3 on the road, where they will play their next five games. Portland has not won a road game since Oct. 20, when they topped Indiana 114-96 in the second game of the season.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBCSN Northwest (Portland), FSN Southeast

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (9-7): Portland scored a season low in an 86-82 loss at Sacramento on Friday but returned the favor with a 102-90 triumph at home over the Kings the next night. “I liked our demeanor,” Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts told reporters after the win. “After being disappointed last night and struggling with the offense, to come back and the way we set the tone — I think our first five baskets were assisted — I thought that set a good tone for the rest of the night." That offense is being led by shooting guard CJ McCollum, who is averaging 21.3 points on 55.2 percent shooting in the last four games.
ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (7-8): Memphis is searching for a leader on the court with point guard Mike Conley (Achilles) out until at least next month, and center Marc Gasol is trying to fill the void. Gasol went 6-of-17 from the floor in Saturday's loss and was honest in discussing his team's issues. "The only thing I can say is I apologize because that’s not what our fans are used to seeing and we’ve got to figure it out," Gasol told reporters. "The only way I know how to do that is working, getting back to work, helping the players. There’s a lot of new guys that haven’t been a part of this, but it’s the mindset that we’ve always had, the accountability that we’ve always had, the mindset of one-on-one challenge and trusting the guy behind you."

                    BUZZER BEATERS

                    1. Trail Blazers PG Damian Lillard went 1-of-7 from 3-point range on Saturday and is shooting 31.7 percent from beyond the arc.

                    2. Grizzlies SG Tyreke Evans (shoulder) is day-to-day.

                    3. Portland earned the win in two of its last three trips to Memphis.

PREDICTION: Grizzlies 103, Trail Blazers 101

                        Preview: Wizards at Bucks

                        Gracenote
                        Nov 19, 2017

The Milwaukee Bucks followed up their longest winning streak of the season with a 32-point loss to the NBA's worst team. They'll try to bounce back and rediscover that winning form when they host the Washington Wizards on Monday.

Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 24 points and Khris Middleton added 23 but no other Milwaukee player had more than eight in the 111-79 loss to the Dallas Mavericks, the team's worst offensive showing of the season and its first setback in five games with point guard Eric Bledsoe. "I think the ball was just stuck," coach Jason Kidd told reporters after his team recorded just 13 assists. "The ball got sticky and we were afraid to let go of it to a teammate." The Wizards have also dropped off since a recent four-game winning streak, now losing two in a row following Sunday's 100-91 defeat in Toronto. Star point guard John Wall missed the contest with a knee issue and is day-to-day.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBCSN Washington, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

ABOUT THE WIZARDS (9-7): Bradley Beal did his best to make up for Wall's absence by scoring 27 points, nailing five 3-pointers for the second straight game. Tim Frazier stepped into the starting lineup in place of Wall and provided a season-high eight rebounds along with a season high-tying eight assists in his second start of the season. Sunday's loss opened up a stretch in which Washington plays 10 of 12 on the road.

ABOUT THE BUCKS (8-7): Milwaukee's reserves combined for 13 points on 6-of-24 shooting in the loss to Dallas, missing all 10 of their 3-point tries and making 1-of-4 free throws. "Definitely it hurts," Middleton told reporters. "We need everybody, we need everybody to play well. Not just the starting five, not just a couple guys, we need everybody every night." It doesn't help matters that guard Matthew Dellavedova (knee) and forward Mirza Teletovic (knee) have missed the last two and five games, respectively.

                        BUZZER BEATERS

                        1. Beal has at least 26 points in three straight games.

                        2. Bucks PG Malcolm Brogdon is shooting 39.6 percent since being bumped to a reserve role after shooting 50.5 percent as a starter.

                        3. Washington won three of four meetings last season but Antetokounmpo averaged 29.7 points, 11.3 rebounds and 6.7 assists in the three games he played against the Wizards.

                        PREDICTION: Bucks 104, Wizards 99

                            Preview: Thunder at Pelicans

                            Gracenote
                            Nov 20, 2017

The New Orleans Pelicans expect to get star Anthony Davis back on Monday, just in time to help fix a defense that was rolled over in consecutive losses. The Pelicans surrendered an average of 135.5 points in those two games and will try to tighten things up when they host the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday.

Davis left in the opening minute of the third quarter on Friday at Denver after taking a shoulder to the face from Nuggets center Nikola Jokic and was originally diagnosed with a concussion before clearing that diagnosis on Sunday and being diagnosed with a bruise of the orbital bone above his right eye. Davis, who is averaging two blocks and 1.5 steals to go with 25.1 points and 11 rebounds, is probable for Monday's game. The Thunder had a three-game winning streak come to an end with a 104-101 loss at San Antonio on Friday and are still trying to find some consistency with Paul George and Carmelo Anthony on the roster with reigning MVP Russell Westbrook. Anthony was the only one of the three to shoot 50 percent or better from the floor in Friday's setback.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN Oklahoma, FSN New Orleans

ABOUT THE THUNDER (7-8): Westbrook is doing the most adjusting in an effort to make the transition more comfortable for Anthony and George, but he is struggling with his shooting in the meantime. Westbrook, who averaged 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists last season, is putting up 19.9 points, 9.5 assists and 8.2 boards so far in 2017-18. He went 5-of-22 from the floor in Friday's setback and shot 33.3 percent or worse from the floor in four of his last six games.

ABOUT THE PELICANS (8-8): New Orleans allowed the most points in an NBA game this season in Friday's 146-114 loss at Denver, and coach Alvin Gentry had no trouble getting on his team about the performance. “It sucked. It sucked. It sucked," Gentry told reporters. "That’s my thoughts on the game. We didn’t do anything right, and everything was terrible, coaching included. It was an embarrassment. We embarrassed our franchise, and that includes everyone.” The Pelicans allowed the Nuggets to shoot 62.9 percent from the field in the loss and are 24th in the NBA in field-goal percentage defense on the season at 46.6 percent.

                            BUZZER BEATERS

                            1. George is 16-of-33 from 3-point range over the last four games.

                            2. Pelicans SG Tony Allen (knee) is expected to return from a four-game absence on Monday.

                            3. Oklahoma City took all four meetings last season and six of the last seven.

                            PREDICTION: Pelicans 120, Thunder 113

The teams with the best and worst records in the NBA will meet Monday night when the Boston Celtics put their 15-game winning streak on the line at the Dallas Mavericks. The Celtics' run is the fifth-longest in franchise history - four shy of matching the record set in 2008-09 - but they've had to come from behind in many of their recent victories, including Saturday's 110-99 triumph in Atlanta.

"I think the biggest thing is that we can't keep digging these holes," coach Brad Stevens told reporters. "We need to put an emphasis on playing with pace and getting the ball to the other side of the floor." Boston has trailed at halftime in four of its last five contests and in the fifth - Tuesday at Brooklyn - it was tied at the break. The Mavericks have been easy pickings for most teams this season but turned the tables on Milwaukee on Saturday with a shocking 111-79 triumph. Wesley Matthews scored 22 points and led the team's best 3-point shooting effort of the season (19-for-38) with a 6-for-8 performance.

ABOUT THE CELTICS (15-2): Kyrie Irving has been a galvanizing force for Boston but quietly had some shooting woes and entered Atlanta at a career-low 42.9 percent from the floor and 31.9 percent from long range. In his third game wearing a mask to protect facial fractures, he reversed that trend in a significant way by going 10-for-12 overall and 5-for-6 from beyond the arc en route to 30 points, just a bit better than Jaylen Brown's career-high 27. "I could see just a little bit more of the crowd tonight," Irving told the media. "The eye holes were a little bit bigger. The basket looked a little bit better. I was told to kind of keep it on, so it was a better fit."

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (3-14): Dallas snapped a four-game losing streak that included a 24-point home loss to Minnesota on Friday and seemed to really need a cakewalk like the one that came one night later. "It rejuvenates (the locker room)," Matthews told reporters. "The aches don't hurt as much. You feel better about everything you've done. You don't need moral victories, you've got the real one." Dwight Powell came off the bench to tie a career high with 13 rebounds to help the Mavericks win the battle of the boards 49-38.

                                BUZZER BEATERS

                                1. Brown is averaging 24.5 points and has one total turnover in the last two contests.

                                2. Mavericks PF Dirk Nowitzki needs 14 rebounds to become the 29th player in NBA history with 11,000.

                                3. Boston swept two meetings last season, winning 111-98 in Dallas on Feb. 13.

                                PREDICTION: Celtics 108, Mavericks 101
