      Preview: Canucks at Devils

      Gracenote
      Nov 23, 2017

The New Jersey Devils will try to cool off rookie forward Brock Boeser and find more consistency to their game when they host the surging Vancouver Canucks on Friday night. The Devils are 3-3-4 since knocking off Vancouver 2-0 on Nov. 1 and must figure out a way to stop Boeser, who has scored six of his team-high 11 goals in the last four games - four in the past two as the Canucks started their road trip with two wins.

New Jersey outshot Boston 15-5 in the third period to rally from a goal down before falling 3-2 in an 11-round shootout Wednesday and coach John Hynes would like to see his team play a complete game against Vancouver. “The last time we played them, the puck management wasn’t very good,” Hynes told reporters. “They’re a good, structured team. You have to make sure you’re making good decisions coming up the ice to get to our attack game. We have to skate and put their defense under pressure.” Boeser, the 23rd pick in the 2015 draft, had two goals each in 5-2 victories over Philadelphia and Pittsburgh to start a six-game trip. “Yeah, he hasn’t missed a shot in two weeks,” Vancouver center Brandon Sutter told Sportsnet of Boeser. “He’s going well. He’s confident, that’s the biggest thing. When he gets his chance to shoot the puck, he’s going to shoot it. And when he shoots, he scores.”

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Sportsnet Pacific (Vancouver), MSG Plus (New Jersey)

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (11-8-3): Forward Sven Baertschi, who stands second on the team in points behind Boeser (21) with 17, has been productive of late as well with two goals and two assists in the last three contests. Veteran forward Thomas Vanek has also recorded six assists in the last five games and is one point behind Bo Horvat (16) for third on the team. Vancouver’s power play is becoming more of a factor the last five games (3-1-1), converting seven of their 15 opportunities during that stretch - getting one from Boeser in each of the last two contests - and is 15th in the league at 19.8 percent.

ABOUT THE DEVILS (12-5-4): New Jersey has been able to fight through injury issues all season and another obstacle was added Wednesday when it was announced top-line forward Kyle Palmieri (broken foot) was lost for 4-to-6 weeks. “I don’t know how often you get a full lineup throughout the year,” center Travis Zajac told reporters. “I think every team deals with it. We just have to make sure we come together. Guys are going to have increased roles.” Taylor Hall tops the team with 21 points and fellow forward Brian Gibbons recorded three of his team-high 10 goals in the last five games.

      OVERTIME

      1. New Jersey G Cory Schneider is 5-1-2 against his former team and the Devils have won six straight overall versus the Canucks.

      2. Vancouver F Daniel Sedin had two points against Philadelphia on Tuesday to pull within four of 1,000 in his career.

      3. Canucks D Erik Gudbranson left Wednesday’s game with an upper-body injury and is questionable for Friday.

      PREDICTION: Devils 4, Canucks 3

          Preview: Red Wings at Rangers

          Gracenote
          Nov 23, 2017

The New York Rangers have recovered from a dreadful start to the season and have a chance to continue their current hot stretch when they open a four-game homestand against the Detroit Red Wings on Friday night. New York won just one of its first eight games but is 8-2-0 over its last 10 after rolling to a 6-1 victory at Carolina on Wednesday night.

Chris Kreider and Jesper Fast each scored a pair of goals and Henrik Lundqvist made 32 saves in his 10th consecutive start for the resurgent Rangers. New York struggled at home in 2016-17 and started slow this season by winning just one of its first five, but the Rangers have ripped off six straight victories at Madison Square Garden. Detroit is coming off a 2-1-2 homestand that ended with a thud in a 6-2 drubbing by the Edmonton Oilers. The Red Wings halted a six-game losing streak at Madison Square Garden with a 2-1 win in October 2016, but they have scored a total of eight goals in the seven games.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, MSG2 (New York)

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (10-9-3): Anthony Mantha is second on Detroit with 19 points and his 10 goals are four more than any other teammate, but he has failed to hit the scoresheet in three straight games, earning a rebuke from coach Jeff Blashill. "The one thing with Anthony is, I've told him this, that for us to be great, I think he's got to be great," Blashill said. "That comes with lots of responsibility." Forward Scott Wilson (lower body) practiced Thursday after leaving Wednesday's game with an injury.

ABOUT THE RANGERS (11-9-2): Captain Ryan McDonagh sat out Wednesday's game due to an abdominal strain and has been shut down until Sunday, when he will be re-evaluated. Fellow blue-liner Brendan Smith, in his third game back in the lineup following an injury absence, helped pick up the slack by collecting an assist and registering a plus-4. “When the door opens, you get a little more opportunity, a little more ice time,” Smith said. “There’s a lot of really good players on our back end and we kind of filled that role.”

          OVERTIME

          1. Rangers C Mika Zibanejad has six goals and 10 assists in his last 13 games.

          2. Detroit is 10-for-25 on the power play in nine games in November.

          3. Lundqvist has four shutouts and a 1.98 goals-against average in 12 starts versus the Red Wings.

PREDICTION: Rangers 4, Red Wings 2

              Preview: Senators at Blue Jackets

              Gracenote
              Nov 23, 2017

The Columbus Blue Jackets are off to an outstanding start for the second consecutive season, one that has carried them to the top of the Metropolitan Division. The Blue Jackets will take a five-game winning streak into Friday's home matchup against the Ottawa Senators, who are headed in the other direction with four straight losses.

Columbus has allowed more than one goal once during its five-game run, improving to 7-1 in overtime following Wednesday's 1-0 victory over Calgary. "I think we're just confident (in overtime), first of all in our conditioning, so we never feel tired," captain Nick Foligno said. "Our overtime right now, we're confident because we work hard on it, and we've gotten some bounces to win games." Ottawa's offense is suffering from jet lag since sweeping a two-game series against Colorado in Sweden, losing four in a row while producing only five goals. "I think every team's going to go through little ups and downs in the season," forward Ryan Dzingel said. "I think that's where we are now."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, RDS, TSN5 (Ottawa), FSN Ohio (Columbus)

ABOUT THE SENATORS (8-6-6): Coach Guy Boucher said Thursday that forward Zack Smith could return to the lineup Saturday against the New York Islanders, thus making sense of the decision to put Chris DiDomenico on waivers. Ottawa is 0-for-14 on the power play during the four-game skid, managing only one shot on a 5-on-3 Wednesday. "Sometimes everything goes great on the power play and you're not really asking yourself any question," forward Derick Brassard said. "But now maybe it's in the back of our head. ... We're thinking too much."

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (14-7-1): Reigning Vezina Trophy winner Sergei Bobrovsky has been in net for each of the past five wins, posting a pair of shutouts and yielding a combined four goals. That came on the heels of a four-game skid in which the Blue Jackets surrendered 15 goals -- 10 in three starts by Bobrovsky. "I am focusing on my things," Bobrovsky said. "I can’t go and score the goals. I can’t control that, so I don’t think about that. I try to stay in my zone and do my things, and trust that the rest of my teammates will take care of it."

              OVERTIME

              1. Bobrovsky has stopped 174 of 180 shots over his past six starts.

              2. Brassard is mired in a 12-game goalless drought after scoring six times in the first eight games.

              3. The Blue Jackets have killed off their last 14 short-handed situations.

PREDICTION: Blue Jackets 3, Senators 1

                  Preview: Maple Leafs at Hurricanes

                  Gracenote
                  Nov 23, 2017

Nazem Kadri has dented the scoresheet in a career-high eight straight games, but the Toronto Maple Leafs have mustered just one goal in back-to-back losses after erupting for 21 during their six-game winning streak. Kadri looks to continue his streak while nipping that of the Leafs in the bud on Friday when they visit the Carolina Hurricanes.

Kadri offered no apologies for increasing his point total to nine (five goals, four assists) during that stretch with a goal in Wednesday's 2-1 shootout loss to Florida, but did show remorse for accidentally hitting a penalty box official with his stick in frustration during the late stages of the third period. "I feel terrible about it," the 27-year-old Kadri said. "It's an emotional game and I kind of got out of control. ... There's no excuse for it. It won't happen again." Carolina coach Bill Peters wasn't in the mood for excuses after watching his team's momentum following a 5-1-1 run halted with a 6-1 setback to the New York Rangers on Wednesday. "We're not going to win a whole bunch of games if we're not the hardest-working team," said Peters, who put his team through the paces on Thursday with a skating session.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, TSN4 (Toronto), FSN Carolinas

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (14-8-1): After offering an ice-cold response earlier in the week, coach Mike Babcock apparently is warming up to the notion of pairing Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner on the same line on a more consistent basis. The 20-year-old forwards were linked together in Wednesday's game and again during practice the following day. Fellow linemate Zach Hyman returned to practice on Thursday after exiting the contest versus the Panthers with a suspected concussion, although Matt Martin did not participate and told TSN that he expects to be a healthy scratch versus Carolina.
ABOUT THE HURRICANES (9-7-4): Sebastian Aho scored for the fifth straight contest on Wednesday, raising his point total to 10 (five goals, five assists) during his five-game point streak. Fellow Finn Teuvo Teravainen set up Aho's goal to push both his assist and point streaks to five games (five goals, six assists) as well, with Teravainen also scoring a goal and setting up two others in Carolina's 6-3 win at Toronto on Oct. 26. Scott Darling made 31 saves versus the Maple Leafs to pick up the win, but owns an .881 save percentage in his last five starts overall.

                  OVERTIME

                  1. Carolina C Josh Jooris scored twice in the first meeting versus Toronto for his lone goals of the season.

                  2. Maple Leafs G Frederik Andersen turned aside 42 shots in his last outing and boasts a .968 save percentage in his last six starts.

                  3. The Hurricanes have scored five power-play goals in their last five games after going 1-for-26 with the man advantage in their previous 10.

PREDICTION: Hurricanes 4, Maple Leafs 2

Tim Hardaway Jr. played 130 games with Hawks from 2015-17 before signing a free-agent contract with New York, and the move has paid big dividends for a Knicks team that visits Atlanta on Friday night. Hardaway scored a career-best 38 points Wednesday, including 12 during a dizzying 28-0 burst in the third quarter, to lift the Knicks from a double-digit halftime deficit to a 108-100 victory over Toronto - New York’s sixth victory when trailing by 10 points or more.

“If I see a lane, I’m just penetrating as hard as I can and trying to make the right play at the basket,” Hardaway told reporters after raising his season average to 18.4 points per game. Atlanta dropped its 15th game in 18 tries Wednesday, falling 116-103 to a Los Angeles Clippers team that entered the game on a nine-game losing streak. The Hawks gave up 15 3-pointers and allowed Los Angeles to shoot 57.9 percent from the field as a seven-point lead early in the third quarter evaporated. “A lot of their guys played well, but we have to do more to be disruptive, more to make it difficult for them,” Atlanta coach Mike Budenholzer told the media.

The Knicks outscored Toronto 41-10 in the decisive third quarter, then held together as Toronto mounted a late charge before Porzingis and Hardaway hit key baskets down the stretch. New York has won seven of its past 10 games, moving into a fifth-place tie in the Eastern Conference.

ABOUT THE HAWKS (3-15): Atlanta gave standout rookie John Collins his first career start Wednesday, and he responded with 14 points and 10 rebounds in 38 minutes. Marco Belinelli scored 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting against the Clippers, his fourth double-figure scoring output in the past five games to raise his season average to 12.1. The Hawks are tied for third in the league in steals and ninth in assists.

                              2. New York’s key number is 100: The Knicks are 10-2 when scoring at least 100 points, and 4-0 when holding opponents to fewer than 100.

                              3. Atlanta plays four of its next five games at home, where the Hawks are 1-6 on the season.
