      Nov 25, 2017

The New Jersey Devils are not showing any indication they are going away anytime soon and can take over first place in the Metropolitan Division with a win on Saturday against the host Detroit Red Wings. The Devils, who have not made the playoffs since 2011-12, have earned at least one point in seven of their last eight contests (4-1-3) after edging Vancouver 3-2 at home on Friday.

Taylor Hall continued his strong campaign with a goal and two assists, pushing his team-leading total to 24 points, as New Jersey hit the 13-win mark four weeks earlier than last season. The Devils hope to improve on their record in the second of back-to-back contests (3-1-0) when they take on Detroit, which is winless in its last three after falling 2-1 in overtime at the New York Rangers on Friday. The Red Wings had been on an upswing with points in seven of nine games (6-2-1) before coughing up a late two-goal lead at home in an overtime loss to Colorado on Sunday and getting routed by Edmonton 6-2 three nights later. Detroit starts a three-game homestand, which also includes matchups against Los Angeles and Montreal, and is 4-3-3 in its new arena.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, MSG Plus2 (New Jersey), FSN Detroit

ABOUT THE DEVILS (13-5-4): Rookie defenseman Will Butcher notched an assist Friday and ranks second on the team with 17 points - one more than the 18-year-old Nico Hischier, who has failed to tally on 16 shots over his last four games. Blue-liner Damon Severson recorded his third goal of the season Friday and owns a plus-1 rating this campaign after finishing 2016-17 at minus-31 - the third-worst mark in the league. One of the improvements New Jersey has made this season is on the power play, where it has raised its success rate from 17.5 to 23.2 percent.

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (10-9-4): Tomas Tatar may be warming up again as he registered his third goal in four games Friday to increase his total to seven - second behind team leader Anthony Mantha (10), who is pointless in four contests. Dylan Larkin tops Detroit with 20 points and shares the team lead in assists (16) with defenseman Mike Green, who has gone four games without landing on the scoresheet. Blue-liner Trevor Daley, who has notched one point in 23 contests, left Friday’s game in the first period with an upper-body injury and did not return.

      OVERTIME

      1. Detroit C Henrik Zetterberg recorded an assist on Friday for his 918th career point, tying Pavel Datsyuk for sixth place on the franchise list.

      2. New Jersey C Travis Zajac has yet to notch a point in five games since returning from a torn pectoral muscle.

      3. The Red Wings have won three of the last four meetings, including a 4-1 triumph at home in April.

PREDICTION: Devils 4, Red Wings 2

          Preview: Blackhawks at Panthers

          Gracenote
          Nov 24, 2017

Although Patrick Kane scored twice in his last contest, several other high-profile members of the Chicago Blackhawks are mired in significant goal-scoring slumps. Captain Jonathan Toews, Brandon Saad and Patrick Sharp look to put an end to those difficulties as the Blackhawks complete a three-game road trip against the Florida Panthers on Saturday at the BB&T Center.

"It never gets easy. You think about it all the time. You feel that pressure in tight games, and in losses, definitely," said Sharp, who has failed to score in 15 consecutive games. Toews has just two goals - including one into an empty net - in his last 16 contests while Saad has one tally in his last 15 games for Chicago, which has overcome a lack of offense to record at least a point in four of its last five outings (3-1-1). The Blackhawks will look to solve Roberto Luongo, who upped his save percentage to .955 in his last six starts after turning away 43 shots in Wednesday's 2-1 shootout win over Toronto. The 38-year-old hasn't yielded more than one even-strength goal in his last three games overall and sports a .931 save percentage with five shutouts in his career versus Chicago.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBCSN Chicago, FSN Florida

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (10-8-3): Chicago has embraced a rather simplistic solution to a complicated season-long dilemma that was its ailing power play, and it seems to be working. "Shoot the puck, retrieve the puck, shoot again," forward Artem Anisimov told the Chicago Sun-Times of the team's units with the man advantage, who have converted 6-of-17 opportunities in their last four games after a dreadful 2-for-33 stint in the previous eight. The Blackhawks will aim to improve upon their 25th-ranked power play (16.5 percent) against the Panthers' 30th-ranked penalty kill (73.2 percent).

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (8-11-2): Captain Derek MacKenzie returned to practice on Friday and could be in line to end a five-game absence due to a lower-body injury versus the Blackhawks. "Once he gets off the ice, we're going to talk to him, see how he feels, how he dealt with the practice and then make a decision whether (Saturday's) the day or it's going to be on the road trip," coach Bob Boughner told the Sun-Sentinel. Defenseman Mark Pysyk's availability is also in question as he sustained a lower-body injury versus the Maple Leafs despite logging a season-high 22:41 of ice time and unleashing five shots on goal.

          OVERTIME

          1. Kane, who scored twice in Wednesday's 3-2 overtime loss at Tampa Bay, has seven points (three goals, four assists) during a five-game point streak.

          2. Panthers RW Nick Bjugstad, who scored in regulation and the shootout versus Toronto, also tallied in his last encounter against the Blackhawks.

          3. Chicago RW Richard Panik is mired in a 12-game goal drought, while RW Ryan Hartman and C Nick Schmaltz have one goal in 13 and 17 games, respectively.

          PREDICTION: Blackhawks 4, Panthers 1

              Preview: Lightning at Penguins

              Gracenote
              Nov 25, 2017

The two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins attempt to snap their three-game losing streak when they host the Eastern Conference-best Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday. The Penguins have won only four of their last 13 games, dropping decisions to Chicago and Vancouver before falling 4-3 to Boston on Friday afternoon as they registered just 20 shots.

“I think everybody could be better,” Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan told reporters. “We need to be better if we’re going to get the results. We need to be more consistent. We can’t show up after the first 20 minutes of the game and expect to win games consistently.” The Penguins will face another angry team Saturday as Tampa Bay has lost two of its last three and will try to avoid its first losing streak of the season after falling 3-1 at Washington on Friday. The Lightning have allowed 10 goals in their last three contests as top scorers Steven Stamkos (36 points) and Nikita Kucherov (17 goals) have cooled off a bit in the past week. “I think we think we’re a little bit better than we are,” Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper told reporters. “There’s a reason we have the record we have - because we’ve worked to get there. I just don’t know if we’re putting in that same kind of effort, that urgency, that determination that got us off to the start.”

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay), AT&T SportsNet-Pittsburgh

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (16-4-2): Stamkos has posted one point in the last three games after recording four against Dallas while Kucherov has matched him with one assist in the same span after scoring 17 times in his first 19 contests of the season. Linemate Vladislav Namestnikov recorded the only goal on Friday to push his season total to 10 - matching his output in 74 games during 2016-17 campaign. Defenseman Jake Dotchin was placed on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury Friday and forward J.T. Brown, who took a stick to the face Wednesday versus Chicago, was scratched against Washington.

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (11-10-3): Second-leading scorer Evgeni Malkin (21 points) missed his second straight game Friday with an upper-body injury, and his status for the contest against the Lightning is uncertain. Phil Kessel scored one of the team's goals against Boston to push his total to a team-high 27 points while captain Sidney Crosby registered a tally and an assist to give him six points in his last five games. Jake Guentzel has recorded five goals in his last six contests to tie Kessel for the team lead with nine and Carter Rowney returned to the lineup Friday after missing 14 games with a hand injury.

              OVERTIME

              1. The Lightning won both meetings in October by a combined score of 12-5 but lost a pair of games at Pittsburgh last season.

              2. Crosby is expected to pass Jaromir Jagr (806) on Saturday for second on the franchise list for games played.

              3. Tampa Bay claimed LW Chris DiDomenico off waivers from Ottawa on Friday and recalled C Cory Conacher from Syracuse the American Hockey League.

              PREDICTION: Penguins 5, Lightning 3

                  Nov 25, 2017

Saturday's contest between the Vegas Golden Knights and host Arizona Coyotes is a matchup between the first- and last-place teams in the Pacific Division. Surprising to most, the expansion Golden Knights are the ones at the top of the division as they vie for their season high-tying fifth consecutive victory.

Each win during Vegas' current run has come against a Pacific rival, including Friday's 5-4 overtime triumph over San Jose in which Jonathan Marchessault notched two assists before scoring 1:21 into the extra session. William Karlsson, who leads the team with 20 points, is riding a four-game goal-scoring streak and has recorded two points in each of those contests after tallying twice against the Sharks. Arizona occupies the basement in the division despite having won four of its last five games. The Coyotes split the first two contests of their three-game homestand, dropping a 3-1 decision to San Jose on Wednesday before edging Los Angeles 3-2 in overtime Friday.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountain (Vegas), FSN Arizona

ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS (14-6-1): Karlsson has scored six goals during his streak, giving him a career high as he enters Saturday tied with James Neal for the team lead with 12. The 24-year-old Swede's previous best of nine tallies was reached in 2015-16 while with Columbus. Malcolm Subban recorded the win against the Sharks after stopping all three shots he faced in relief of Maxime Lagace in his first appearance since suffering a lower-body injury on Oct. 21.

ABOUT THE COYOTES (6-16-3): Christian Fischer, who also notched an assist, scored 2:43 into overtime Friday, giving the 20-year-old rookie a team-leading two game-winning goals. Brendan Perlini is riding a three-game goal-scoring streak while defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson has recorded at least one point in four straight contests after converting a power-play opportunity against the Kings. Rookie Clayton Keller leads the team with 11 goals but is in the midst of a nine-game drought.

                  OVERTIME

                  1. Golden Knights LW David Perron, who is tied for second on the team with 19 points, left Friday's game with an upper-body injury and is day-to-day.

                  2. Arizona G Marek Langhamer was recalled from Tucson of the American Hockey League and served as the backup Friday because of the absence of Antti Raanta (upper body).

                  3. Neal has registered a goal and an assist in each of his last two games and at least one point in seven of his last nine.

PREDICTION: Golden Knights 4, Coyotes 2

                      Preview: Wild at Blues

                      Gracenote
                      Nov 25, 2017

Minnesota Wild forward Nino Niederreiter parlayed a career season in which he set personal-best totals in goals (25), assists (32) and points (57) into being compensated with a five-year, $26.25 million deal in the summer. The 25-year-old Swiss star has continued to pay dividends this season as he carries a career-high six-game goal-scoring streak into Saturday's road tilt against the St. Louis Blues.

Niederreiter's ninth goal of the month extended his point streak to a personal-best eight games (seven goals, two assists) on Friday as Minnesota opened a stretch of three straight contests versus Central Division rivals with a 3-2 shootout victory over the Colorado Avalanche. Niederreiter recorded a team-high five points (two goals, three assists) in five regular-season games against the Blues, but St. Louis got the last laugh by dismissing Minnesota in the first round of the playoffs. While the Wild have won two straight to improve to 6-1-1 in their last eight, the Western Conference-best Blues failed to leapfrog NHL-leading Tampa Bay after dropping a 2-0 decision to Nashville on Friday. The offensive power outage came on the heels of St. Louis erupting for eight goals on Tuesday and four goals in each of the three previous games.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN North (Minnesota), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

ABOUT THE WILD (11-8-3): Captain Mikko Koivu has set up seven goals during his five-game assist streak, which is one shy of his career high. Koivu has tormented St. Louis, increasing his point total to 32 (10 goals, 22 assists) in 46 games following a four-point performance (three goals, one assist) last season. Mikael Granlund also notched four points (two goals, two assists) versus the Blues and had an assist on Niederreiter's goal on Friday to extend his point streak to six games.

ABOUT THE BLUES (16-6-1): Brayden Schenn had collected seven goals and 12 assists during a career-high eight-game stretch before joining his mates in being blanked by the Predators. The 26-year-old aims to get back on track versus Minnesota, against which he scored and set up a goal last season with Philadelphia and recorded nine points (one goal, eight assists) in his nine career encounters. Jake Allen has also fared well versus the Wild, posting a 6-3-0 mark with a 2.09 goals-against average and .923 save percentage in 11 career games.

                      OVERTIME

                      1. Minnesota LW Jason Zucker has scored nine goals in nine games to increase his team-leading total to 12.

                      2. Blues coach Mike Yeo served as the Wild's bench boss for parts of five seasons (2011-16), guiding the club to the playoffs in 2013-15.

                      3. Minnesota G Devan Dubnyk has recorded a 1.99 goals-against average and .927 save percentage in his last five starts overall, but sports a 6-12-2 mark in 20 career starts versus St. Louis.

                      PREDICTION: Blues 3, Wild 2

The red-hot Winnipeg Jets try for their seventh victory in the last eight games when they complete a four-game road trip against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday. Winnipeg routed Anaheim 4-1 on Friday as the No. 2 line centered by Bryan Little with Nikolaj Ehlers and Patrik Laine on the wings combined for three goals and four assists, and goaltender Connor Hellebuyck improved to 12-2-2 after making 30 saves.

"You can tell that everyone is supporting each other and no one is taking a shift off. It's huge, and it builds confidence in the team," Hellebuyck told reporters after helping the Jets improve to 7-3-2 on the road. San Jose fell to 1-2-2 in its last five games after a 5-4 overtime loss at Vegas on Friday as the struggling Sharks' offense scored four or more goals for only the fifth time in 21 games this season. San Jose defenseman Brent Burns, the reigning Norris Trophy winner, celebrated his 900th game Friday by scoring his first goal of the season after netting 27 and 29 in the last two years. "There's still a lot of things we can improve on,'' Sharks forward Joonas Donskoi told reporters. "We're playing well. The only thing we have to fix is we have to play 60 minutes."

TV: 10 p.m. ET, Sportsnet (Winnipeg), NBCSN California (San Jose)

ABOUT THE JETS (14-5-3): Laine has seven goals and four assists in 11 November games while Ehlers (three goals, five assists) and Little (two, five) are also producing during that span, prompting Ehlers to tell reporters that "it's great for our line, and great for the team." Top-liners Mark Scheifele and Blake Wheeler share the team lead with 25 points apiece while Scheifele and Laine each have a club-most 11 goals. Coach Paul Maurice announced after Friday's game that Steve Mason (2-3-1, 3.31 goals-against average, .907 save percentage), who won his last two games including 2-1 at Los Angeles on Wednesday, will start Saturday.

ABOUT THE SHARKS (11-8-2): Joe Thornton recorded a pair of assists Friday, moving him past Joe Sakic and into 12th on the all-time list with 1,017. Martin Jones could be back in goal Saturday since he was pulled Friday after allowing three goals on 14 shots or Aaron Dell, who stopped 17-of-19 shots in relief, might get the call. Melker Karlsson missed his third straight game Friday with an upper-body injury.

                          OVERTIME

                          1. Winnipeg is 13-for-36 on the power play in November, scoring in nine of the 11 games.

                          2. San Jose entered Friday leading the NHL in penalty killing at 89.7 percent before yielding two power-play goals Friday, allowing more than one such goal in a game for only the second time this campaign and first since the season opener.

                          3. The Sharks won all three meetings last season while the road team has been victorious five of the last six encounters.

                          PREDICTION: Jets 3, Sharks 2

                              Nov 25, 2017

Calgary's No. 1 line of center Sean Monahan, Johnny Gaudreau and Micheal Ferland is having a November to remember as the Flames complete a six-game road trip Saturday against the Colorado Avalanche. The trio has combined for 22 goals and 21 assists in 10 games this month after Friday's 6-4 loss at Dallas left Calgary 2-2-1 on its trek.

Monahan scored twice on Friday, giving him a team-high 14 goals this season and six in his last four games, while Gaudreau's tally against Dallas gave him eight in his last eight contests as he scored in all but one of them. Colorado is coming off a 3-2 shootout loss in Minnesota on Friday that extended its point streak to three games (2-0-1) as backup Jonathan Bernier made 25 saves in his third straight start. "Solid road game," Bernier told reporters. "Obviously, we don't want to give them an extra point, but we competed really hard, we managed to come back in the game. So I thought, overall, it was a really solid performance." Avalanche No. 1 goaltender Semyon Varlamov missed his third straight game because of illness and will be a game-time decision on Saturday as Andrew Hammond, who was acquired from Ottawa in the deal for Matt Duchene, has been backing up Bernier.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, CBC (Calgary), Altitude (Colorado)

ABOUT THE FLAMES (12-9-1): Monahan, Gaudreau (11 goals) and Ferland (nine) have accounted for 51.5 percent of Calgary's goals this season, with Mikael Backlund fourth on the club with five. Troy Brouwer notched an assist Friday - the only point registered by someone other than Monahan, Gaudreau and Ferland, giving him four this season as he still looks for his first goal after averaging 18 over the previous nine campaigns. Mike Smith (11-7-1) stopped 35 shots on Friday, lowering his save percentage to .922.

ABOUT THE AVALANCHE (11-8-2): Colorado's top line of Nathan MacKinnon (team-high 25 points), Mikko Rantanen (19) and captain Gabriel Landeskog (17) was quiet Friday, with the latter recording an assist. MacKinnon had registered six goals and 14 assists in his previous 10 games, including three assists in Wednesday's 3-0 victory at Dallas, with Rantanen (five goals, seven assists in last 10 contests) and Landeskog (six, five in past 11) also putting up big numbers of late. Defenseman Samuel Girard, who came from Nashville in the three-team trade involving Duchene, continues his solid play as he is plus-4 while averaging 21 minutes, 45 seconds of ice time in seven games with the Avalanche.

                              OVERTIME

                              1. Half of Monahan's goals have come on the power play while Gaudreau has recorded 11 of his 23 assists with the man advantage.

                              2. Colorado is 1-for-19 on the power play over its last four games while the Flames are 9-for-9 on the penalty kill in their past three contests.

                              3. Calgary won all three meetings last season by a combined 14-6 score, with Gaudreau recording four goals and two assists while Monahan netted one tally and set up five others.
