No. 22 Michigan State looks to make a final case for a possible New Year's Day bowl game when it travels to Rutgers for the regular-season finale for both squads Saturday. The Spartans are looking to finish strong after an ugly loss to Ohio State and a not-so-pretty win over Maryland, while the Scarlet Knights are hoping to get past last week's 41-point loss to Indiana.

Michigan State quarterback Brian Lewerke had back-to-back 400-yard passing games a couple weeks ago, but he struggled against the Buckeyes' defense and with the Michigan weather the last two games, finishing with a combined total of 151 yards through the air. The Spartans' defense comes off a strong performance in the win over Maryland, holding the Terrapins to 204 yards of total offense, and last season, MSU shut out Rutgers 49-0. The Scarlet Knights' offense has struggled to score in Big Ten play, finishing with 17 or fewer points in six of their eight contests. Quarterback Giovanni Rescigno is looking to bounce back from a difficult showing against Indiana, as he went 8-of-14 for 67 yards as Rutgers finished with 190 yards of total offense.

ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (8-3, 6-2 Big Ten): The Spartans are hoping to get back to a balanced offense this week after last week's run-heavy attack because of snowy conditions in East Lansing. Running back LJ Scott had a career-high 29 carries for 147 yards and the Spartans rushed the ball 51 times compared to just 14 pass attempts. Lewerke even got into the act with 63 yards on the ground, though some better weather should bring back the Spartans' aerial attack that proved so potent against Northwestern and Penn State in late October and early November.

ABOUT RUTGERS (4-7, 3-5): There is some sentiment around the program that true freshman quarterback Johnathan Lewis should get the majority of the playing time under center against the Spartans. Lewis has played in four games this season, passing for 69 yards and rushing 32 times for 109 yards, but he's thought of as the team's quarterback of the future, and many are ready for the future to be now. Coach Chris Ash is still planning on starting Rescigno, but if the Knights struggle to move to ball early on, it wouldn't be surprising if Lewis comes into the game to provide a spark.

Temple needs a win to lock up a bowl berth when it visits Tulsa in the regular-season finale for both teams Saturday. The Owls will start Frank Nutile at quarterback despite his subpar game last week, when he threw four interceptions in a 45-19 loss against No. 12 Central Florida.




Even though Tulsa is 2-9, the Golden Hurricane played well last week battling No. 19 South Florida before eventually falling 27-20. “We are trying to go 1-0 and finish strong, and being senior day, it is a chance for us to go out with a win,” Tulsa coach Philip Montgomery said on a conference call. “That is our motivation, not trying to keep them from being bowl-eligible.” Temple has earned a bowl bid for the past three seasons, but was not selected to play in one in 2014.

ABOUT TEMPLE (5-6, 3-4 AAC): Quarterback Logan Marchi has sat out the last three games with a lower-body injury and his availability against Tulsa remains in question. Nutile spelled Marchi and directed victories over Navy and Cincinnati, throwing for a combined 513 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions. The Owls could be without wide receiver Ventell Bryant (shoulder) and top running back Ryquell Armstead (undisclosed), who continues to struggle as he gained only 72 yards on the ground in the past three games.
ABOUT TULSA (2-9, 1-6): Tulsa has lost four straight, but showed no quit last week when it held explosive USF to 82 second-half yards. Quarterback Luke Skipper scored on first-half runs of 12 and 9 yards for the Golden Hurricane, who blocked a punt to set up a 38-yard field goal that trimmed a 10-point deficit to seven points with 4:18 remaining. Running back D'Angelo Brewer rushed for 163 yards last week and has gone over the century mark each of the last four outings.

The Wildcats are riding their longest winning streak since 1996 following a 39-0 rout of Minnesota, which vaulted Pat Fitzgerald's team into the Top 25 and kept it on track to win 10 games for the second time in three seasons.

Northwestern has scored 31 or more points in three of its last four games and hopes its offense continues to click as it searches for its third consecutive win in the rivalry with the Fighting Illini. Illinois is left to pick up the pieces after being held to 105 total yards in the 52-14 setback to eighth-ranked Ohio State. The Fighting Illini have dropped nine consecutive games under second-year head coach Lovie Smith and hope to give their fans something to cheer about by knocking off a ranked opponent for the first time since beating Minnesota 28-24 on Oct. 25, 2014. Vanderbilt travels to in-state rival Tennessee on Saturday in a matchup of two teams who are not bowl eligible, winless in SEC play and, in the Volunteers’ case, are playing with an interim coach. Suffice to say whoever comes out on top Saturday will bring some level of satisfaction into what has been a difficult year, and the struggles for both teams can be traced to inconsistent offenses and leaky defenses.

Vanderbilt ranks 12th in the SEC and 104th nationally in points scored per game (23), while giving up 32 points per contest (12th in the league; 97th nationally). “It was one of those games where it was ugly,” Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason admitted to reporters after the Commodores gave up 28 second-quarter points in last week’s 45-17 home defeat to Missouri, losing for the seventh time in eight games. The Volunteers are averaging 19.5 points per game, last in the conference and 118th in the country, and defensively is not much better, allowing 27.9 points per game to rank 10th in the SEC. “I point out the things they didn’t do well,” Tennessee interim coach Brady Hoke told reporters after his first game as head coach, a 30-10 home loss to LSU. “You appreciate the effort and the toughness you want to see from them, and you challenge them.”

ABOUT VANDERBILT (4-7, 0-7 SEC): The Commodores recorded 25 first downs last week but could not overcome three turnovers. Running back Ralph Webb finished with 55 yards Saturday, moving into ninth place on the SEC’s all-time rushing list while surpassing the 4,000-yard career mark. Quarterback Kyle Shurmur has passed for 22 touchdowns, tying the school record for most in one season.

ABOUT TENNESSEE (4-7, 0-7): Playing last week in a driving rainstorm, the Volunteers rushed for just 38 yards and two special-teams turnovers proved costly. Quarterback Jarrett Guarantano passed for 239 yards and a touchdown, but Tennessee could not get any closer than 17-10 at halftime in going scoreless in the second half. John Kelly, who leads Tennessee in rushing (758 yards), finished with just 47 yards on 25 carries.

The nation's oldest rivalry will have more meaning than usual when Arizona State hosts Arizona in a Pac-12 game on Saturday afternoon. Both teams enter their 91st meeting tied for second in the South Division behind USC, and second place would be the highest finish for either team since Arizona won the division in 2014.

The Wildcats have the most proficient offense in the Pac-12 and remain the only FBS team that averages at least seven yards per carry. Their run game is spearheaded by quarterback Khalil Tate, who has gained 1,325 yards on the ground, despite not becoming a full-time player until the fifth game. Both teams have struggled against the pass this season and sit at the bottom of the conference rankings, but Arizona State quarterback Manny Wilkins likely has good memories of his last game against Arizona, when he completed 43-of-58 passes for a career-high 372 yards and three touchdowns last season. The defense didn't have as much success and the Sun Devils lost 56-35 to finish the season with six consecutive defeats, but they'll have a lot more to play for Saturday.

ABOUT ARIZONA (7-4, 5-3 Pac-12): The Wildcats are also third in the FBS at 331.6 rushing yards a game, and Tate isn't the only player capable of picking up big chunks on the ground. J.J. Taylor is second on the team with 754 rushing yards and has surpassed 100 yards in two of the past four games. Nick Wilson, who has 534 rushing yards and six touchdowns this season, ran for 178 yards and three touchdowns in a 42-35 win against Arizona three years ago, but was held to seven yards the following season and didn't play against the Wildcats as a junior because of an injury.

ABOUT ARIZONA STATE (6-5, 5-3): The Sun Devils have one of the top receivers in the Pac-12 in N'Keal Harry, who is third in the conference in average receptions per game (6.3) and No. 1 in yards per game (87). He'll be looking to poke holes in an Arizona secondary that gives up an average of 287.3 passing yards, which is not only last in the Pac-12, but 124th out of 129 teams in the FBS. Wilkins completed 16 combined passes to running backs Demario Richard and Kalen Ballage in last season's loss to Arizona, and that gives Arizona State additional options in the passing game.
