    Preview: Panthers at Rangers

    Gracenote
    Nov 28, 2017

The New York Rangers have battled back after an alarming start to the season with 10 wins in their last 12 games and look to keep rising in the Eastern Conference when they host the Florida Panthers on Tuesday. The Rangers defeated Detroit 2-1 in overtime on Friday before edging Vancouver 4-3 in a shootout two days later to extend their winning streak to four games.

“We have to feel good about what we’ve been doing here the past four weeks,” New York goaltender Henrik Lundqvist told reporters. “Our record is really good, but this league is so competitive. … You have to earn it every night and prepare a certain way and put in the effort all the time to get points.” The Rangers have limited opponents to two or fewer goals in seven of the last 12 games during their run and hope to clamp down on the Panthers, who are coming off an inspiring 3-2 win at New Jersey on Monday. Jared McCann registered the winning goal for Florida, which outshot the Devils 38-25 after finding out earlier in the day that Evgenii Dadonov was lost for four-to-six weeks with a shoulder injury. “We haven’t played the way we wanted to from the start of the season until right now,” Panthers center Vincent Trocheck told the Sun Sentinel. “It’s games like (Monday) that prove the type of team we do have.”

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TVA, FSN Florida, MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (9-12-2): Aleksander Barkov scored his seventh goal Monday to tie Jonathan Huberdeau for second on the team with 22 points - one behind Trocheck after the 24-year-old netted his team-leading 10th tally. Mike Matheson recorded a pair of assists against New Jersey after going five games without a point while fellow defenseman Alex Petrovic rejoined the lineup after sitting out eight contests as a scratch, replacing Ian McCoshen. Denis Malgin was recalled from Springfield of the American Hockey League on Monday and took Dadonov’s spot on a line with Barkov and Huberdeau.

ABOUT THE RANGERS (13-9-2): New York’s offense has produced 14 goals during its winning streak, but the power play has not played much of a role as the team is 1-for-15 over its last six games. Mika Zibanejad tops the team in tallies (11) and points (22) while Mats Zuccarello is next with 19 points after scoring one goal and setting up four others over his last four contests. Captain Ryan McDonough (abdomen) has missed the last three games, and his status for Tuesday is uncertain while fellow defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk snapped a seven-game pointless streak Sunday with an assist.

    OVERTIME

    1. Florida LW Dryden Hunt notched an assist on McCann’s winning goal Monday for his first NHL point.

    2. New York C Boo Nieves missed Sunday’s game due to a hip pointer but participated in the pregame warmup.

    3. The Rangers are 3-0-2 in their last five meetings with the Panthers after posting a 5-4 overtime win in Florida on Nov. 4.

    PREDICTION: Rangers 5, Panthers 3

        Preview: Sharks at Flyers

        Gracenote
        Nov 28, 2017

The Philadelphia Flyers have no time to dwell on their latest setback as they attempt to end their eight-game winless streak when they host the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday. Philadelphia fell to 0-3-5 during its slide with Monday's 5-4 overtime loss at Pittsburgh but has earned points in three straight contests and five of its last six.

Sean Couturier has landed on the scoresheet in five of his last six contests after recording his team-leading 14th goal against the Penguins while Jakub Voracek, who tops the Flyers in scoring (29 points), had his five-game point streak halted. The Sharks are beginning a four-game road trip after posting a 4-0 home victory over Winnipeg on Saturday. The triumph extended San Jose's overall point streak to four games (2-0-2), and the club also has earned at least one point in four consecutive contests on the road (3-0-1). Logan Couture, who tallied twice versus the Jets, leads the Sharks with 19 points and is five away from 400 for his career.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBCSN Philadelphia, NBCSN California (San Jose)

ABOUT THE SHARKS (12-8-2): Aaron Dell figures to get the start Tuesday as Martin Jones suffered an apparent lower-body injury in the win over Winnipeg but finished the game and came away with his 17th career shutout. "Just tightened up a little bit. General muscle tightness," the 27-year-old Jones, who traveled with the team but is day-to-day, told The Mercury News on Monday. "I went through some (tests), but it's fine. Everything was negative." Captain Joe Pavelski's next goal will be his 300th in the NHL while Joel Ward is one point shy of 300 for his career.

ABOUT THE FLYERS (8-9-7): Captain Claude Giroux climbed into ninth place on the franchise scoring list Monday, notching a pair of assists to increase his career point total to 602 - one more than Rod Brind'Amour. Andrew MacDonald returned to the lineup Monday, marking his first appearance since Oct. 21. The 31-year-old defenseman, who was sidelined with a lower-body injury, registered three shots and blocked one in 23 minutes, 56 seconds of ice time.

        OVERTIME

        1. The Sharks on Monday recalled G Antoine Bibeau from the San Jose Barracuda of the American Hockey League on an emergency basis.

        2. Philadelphia's winless streak is its longest since a 10-game slide (0-8-2) from Feb. 6-23, 2008.

        3. San Jose opened the season against the Flyers at home, dropping a 5-3 decision on Oct. 4.

        PREDICTION: Sharks 4, Flyers 2

            Preview: Hurricanes at Blue Jackets

            Gracenote
            Nov 28, 2017

The Columbus Blue Jackets hope for a quick rebound Tuesday as they host the Carolina Hurricanes one day after having their six-game winning streak halted. Columbus posted a 2-1 overtime victory at Montreal on Nov. 14 but was not as fortunate on Monday as it suffered a 3-1 road setback against the Canadiens.

Pierre-Luc Dubois scored the lone goal for the Blue Jackets, who hadn't lost since Carolina paid them a visit on Nov. 10 and came away with a 3-1 triumph. The Hurricanes avoided a third consecutive loss on Sunday, when they outlasted visiting Nashville 4-3 in a shootout. Victor Rask scored a goal and set up another as Carolina completed its four-game homestand with a 2-2-0 mark. The Hurricanes have earned points in three of their last four away from home (2-1-1).

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Carolinas, FSN Ohio (Columbus)

ABOUT THE HURRICANES (10-8-4): Teuvo Teravainen was kept off the scoresheet on Sunday, ending his six-game point streak. The 23-year-old Finn, who leads the team with 21 points, collected five goals and seven assists during his run. Jeff Skinner tops the club with nine goals but has gone six games without a tally.

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (15-8-1): Sergei Bobrovsky had his six-game winning streak snapped on Monday, just hours after being named the NHL's Second Star of the Week. The 29-year-old Russian netminder went 3-0-0 with one shutout, a 1.32 goals-against average and a .950 save perentage while turning aside 76-of-80 shots in three contests last week. Josh Anderson, who leads the team with eight goals, has notched a point in each of his last three games.

            OVERTIME

            1. The Blue Jackets are one of only four teams without a short-handed goal this season.

            2. Carolina RW Sebastian Aho has been kept off the scoresheet in back-to-back contests following a five-game goal-scoring streak during which he added five assists.

            3. Columbus is just 3-for-43 on the power play over its last 15 contests.

PREDICTION: Blue Jackets 3, Hurricanes 1

                Preview: Kings at Red Wings

                Gracenote
                Nov 27, 2017

It took a matchup against a bitter rival to shake the Los Angeles Kings out of a tailspin following a scorching start to the season. Fresh off a 2-1 shootout victory over Anaheim in the latest installment of the Freeway Faceoff, the Kings will open a four-game road trip against another struggling foe in the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night.

Los Angeles, which burst out of the gate with a 9-1-1 start this season, had dropped three in a row and seven of eight (1-6-1) before pulling out the dramatic win over the Ducks, getting a tying goal from Dustin Brown with 92 seconds left in regulation. “We got off to a good start, and I think we’ve had a big serving of humble pie, really," Brown said. "Now we go on the road where we can hopefully get that workman mentality." Detroit has lost four in a row -- three in overtime -- so it came as little surprise that the team focused 3-on-3 situations during Monday's practice. The Red Wings have yet to make themselves at home at brand-new Little Caesars Arena, winning only four of 11 games (4-3-4).

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, Sportsnet Ontario, Sportsnet East, FSN West (Los Angeles), FSN Detroit

ABOUT THE KINGS (13-8-3): Jonathan Quick was mired in a six-game losing streak, matching the longest slide of his career, before turning aside 25 shots and stopping the final three shootouts against Anaheim. "That was a typical Quickie game, which is probably above average for most goalies," Brown said of Quick, who has now allowed more than three goals in his last six starts. "Quickie's like that every night, it seems like." Quick has struggled against the Red Wings with an 8-13-1 record and 2.92 goals-against average.

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (10-9-5): Forward David Booth, a former 30-goal scorer who was placed on waivers at the beginning of the month, scored his first two goals of the season Saturday to earn a promotion to the top line alongside captain Henrik Zetterberg and Gustav Nyquist. Rookie Martin Frk (groin), who has six goals and nine points in 18 games, will miss his seventh consecutive contest but is expected to return Saturday. Defenseman Trevor Daley practice Monday but is likely out Tuesday, coach Jeff Blashill said.

                OVERTIME

                1. Los Angeles has scored two goals or fewer in eight of its last nine games.

                    Preview: Blackhawks at Predators

                    Gracenote
                    Nov 28, 2017

The Nashville Predators have turned their fortunes around after recording at least a point in 10 of their last 11 games (9-1-1), and defenseman Mattias Ekholm is a major part of that surge. Ekholm has scored five goals in his last seven contests heading into the Predators' opener a four-game homestand against the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday.

Ekholm recorded his third multi-point performance in seven outings with a power-play goal and an assist and also blocked three shots in a 4-3 shootout loss to Carolina on Sunday. The 27-year-old Swede has recorded seven points with the man advantage this season for Nashville, which has seen its third-ranked power play score 10 times in its last eight games. Chicago's power play has answered a disastrous 2-for-33 stretch by converting eight times over the last six games, including twice in Monday's 7-3 triumph against Anaheim. Rookie Alex DeBrincat secured his first career hat trick and added an assist versus the Ducks to increase his point total to 12 (nine goals, three assists) this month.

                    TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBCSN

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (12-8-3): Patrick Kane extended his point streak to seven games after setting up three goals versus Anaheim, giving him four goals and seven assists during that run. Perhaps not surprisingly, the Blackhawks have been successful in that stretch (5-1-1) to move into sole possession of fourth place in the Central Division. Artem Anisimov (team-leading 11 goals) hasn't been too shabby in his own right, as his goal in Chicago's 2-1 setback versus Nashville on Oct. 27 ignited a surge of 12 points (10 goals, two assists) in his last 13 games.

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (14-6-3): Filip Forsberg saw his seven-game point streak halted by the Hurricanes, but the 23-year-old has flustered the Blackhawks in recent history. Forsberg scored his team's lone goal in a 2-1 setback in the Windy City on Oct. 14, and recorded two goals and three assists as Nashville swept Chicago in the first round of the playoffs last season. Fellow forward Craig Smith scored in the most recent meeting with the Blackhawks and also tallied against Carolina on Sunday, giving him 10 points in his last 14 games.

                    OVERTIME

                    1. Nashville G Pekka Rinne boasts an 8-0-1 mark at home this season and has permitted just seven goals during his four-game winning streak overall.

                    2. With Chicago's Corey Crawford manning the net on Monday, fellow G Anton Forsberg is expected to get the nod versus the Predators with the team in the midst of five contests in a seven-game stretch.

                    3. Nashville C Kyle Turris has six points (two goals, four assists) in eight games since being dealt from Ottawa in a blockbuster three-team trade.

                    PREDICTION: Predators 4, Blackhawks 2

                        Preview: Maple Leafs at Flames

                        Gracenote
                        Nov 28, 2017

The Toronto Maple Leafs have stumbled a bit with losses in three of their last four games after recording a season-high six consecutive wins. With losses in 10 of their last 11 encounters in Calgary, the Maple Leafs look to regain their footing as they begin a three-game road trip against the Flames on Tuesday.

Although Nazem Kadri saw his career-best nine-game point streak halted in Saturday's 4-2 loss to Alex Ovechkin and Washington, the 27-year-old Ontario native is champing at the bit to test his mettle against another star in the NHL in Calgary's Johnny Gaudreau. "I like to go up against the best players and measure myself against that challenge," Kadri told the Toronto Sun. "You have to be physical on (Gaudreau), He's a great player, he's got that upper-echelon skill. If you're light or soft on him, he's going to make you look bad." Gaudreau (11 goals) and linemates Sean Monahan (team-best 14 goals) and Micheal Ferland (10 goals) have put many an opponent in an unfavorable light, combining for over half of the team's 69 tallies this season. Ferland scored his 10th goal on Saturday as the Flames posted their eighth win in 12 outings (8-3-1) with a 3-2 victory at Colorado.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, TSN4 (Toronto), Sportsnet West (Calgary)

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (15-9-1): Kadri scored twice and Frederik Andersen turned aside all 26 shots he faced in a 4-0 home win over Calgary on Jan. 23. The victorious effort was nothing new for the 28-year-old Dane, who boasts a 5-0-1 career mark versus the Flames despite sporting a less-than-desirable .892 save percentage. Mitch Marner scored in that contest versus Calgary, but has been held off the scoresheet in each of his last three games after recording 10 points (one goal, nine assists) in his previous eight.

ABOUT THE FLAMES (13-9-1): Workhorse goaltender Mike Smith will make his first start since Friday when he faces Toronto, and the 35-year-old is welcoming the challenge. "It's always a test when you come off a long road trip," he said. "That first game at home always seems to be a challenge. I think it'll be a good test for us." Monahan routinely has been passing tests as he has recorded at least a point in 10 of his last 13 games - including 10 (six goals, four assists) in his last five.

                        OVERTIME

                        1. Calgary C Mikael Backlund, who scored his 100th career goal on Saturday, has 10 points (two goals, eight assists) in his past 10 games.

                        2. Toronto C Dominic Moore has collected three assists over his last three contests.

                        3. Gaudreau's team-best 23 assists are 11 more than that of the next closest member of the Flames (Monahan, LW Matthew Tkachuk and D T.J. Brodie each have 12).

PREDICTION: Flames 4, Maple Leafs 3

                            Preview: Coyotes at Oilers

                            Gracenote
                            Nov 27, 2017

The Edmonton Oilers have been unable to generate any consistency this season, producing back-to-back victories on only one occasion. Back home following a five-game road trip, the Oilers have a chance to duplicate that feat and turn around their season-long struggles at Rogers Place when they host the Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday night.

Edmonton was rocked in the first two games of its recent trek, surrendering 14 goals in losses at Dallas and St. Louis before recovering and sandwiching wins at Detroit and Boston around a setback in Buffalo. "We finished the trip off the way we wanted to," Oilers coach Todd McLellan said after Sunday's 4-2 victory over the Bruins. "We have to break the spell now and put two (wins) together." The Coyotes own the worst record and fewest points in the NHL but have turned things around, winning four of five prior to Saturday's 4-2 loss to expansion Vegas. Arizona has won only four of 15 games away from home (4-9-2) and has dropped the past three meetings against Pacific Division rival Edmonton.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona-Plus, Sportsnet Oilers (Edmonton)

ABOUT THE COYOTES (6-17-3): Second-year forward Brendan Perlini is more than halfway to last season's goal total of 14 after scoring in four consecutive games, including what coach Rick Tocchet called a "highlight-reel" tally in Saturday's loss. Despite missing six games last month due to a concussion, the 2014 first-round draft pick (No. 12 overall) has eight goals through 20 games. "When you have a shot like that and you can skate like that, there's not too many people in the NHL that have that kind of package," Tocchet said.

ABOUT THE OILERS (9-13-2): Leon Draisaitl, who normally plays alongside Connor McDavid, was switched to center and wound up assisting on Ryan Strome's go-ahead goal before scoring into an empty net. The team is trying to get him going after he established career bests with 29 goals and 48 assists last season. "Leon skates, a lot of the time he just skates for Leon," McLellan said. "Tonight he skated for his teammates and created open ice ... using his size and creating space. So that was nice to see. And we need him to continue.”

                            OVERTIME

                            1. McDavid had a goal and four assists in five games versus the Coyotes last season.

                            2. Arizona recalled F Dylan Strome, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2015 draft, from Tucson on Sunday.

                            3. Edmonton is 0-for-7 on the power play over the past four games.

                            PREDICTION: Oilers 5, Coyotes 2

                                Gracenote
                                Nov 28, 2017

Linemates William Karlsson and NHL First Star of the Week Jonathan Marchessault have come up aces in the Vegas Golden Knights' second five-game winning streak of the season. Karlsson has scored at least once and recorded multi-point performances in each victory and Marchessault has collected a goal and two assists in each of the last three contests heading into Tuesday's home tilt versus the Dallas Stars.

"I've been scoring so many goals lately, so for sure I'm playing the best hockey of my life right now,” Karlsson told the Las Vegas Sun. The 24-year-old Swede netted his team-best 13th goal in 16 contests in Saturday's 4-2 win at Arizona, putting him on pace for 48 tallies in 2017-18 after totaling 15 while playing in back-to-back 81-game seasons in the last two years. While Karlsson and Marchessault have aided the Golden Knights' second-ranked offense (3.68 goals per game), the Stars answered being shut out with their second six-goal performance in four outings with a 6-4 triumph versus Calgary. Tyler Seguin recorded his seventh hat trick in a Dallas sweater in that contest and also tallied in the Stars' 2-1, season-opening loss to Vegas on Oct. 6.
TV: 10 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (Dallas), SN1, SNE, SNO, SNP, AT&TSportsNet-Rocky Mountains (Vegas)

ABOUT THE STARS (12-10-1): Alexander Radulov has paid significant dividends since signing a five-year, $31.25 million contract in early July. The 31-year-old Russian posted his fifth multi-point performance of the season when he scored and set up a goal versus the Flames to increase his point total to 18 (seven goals, 11 assists) over his last 14 games. Fellow offseason acquisition Ben Bishop, he of the six-year, $29.5 million contract, is just 2-6-0 with a 4.04 goals-against average and .872 save percentage on the road.

ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS (15-6-1): James Neal scored and set up a goal in two consecutive games before being held off the scoresheet against the Coyotes, but looks to rebound versus a Dallas club against which he scored twice in the season opener. The 30-year-old Neal, who was selected in the second round of the 2005 draft by the Stars, has four goals and seven assists in his last 11 encounters with Dallas. Malcolm Subban, who is expected to receive his first career start versus the Stars, owns a 4-0-0 mark, 1.87 goals-against average and .935 save percentage this season.

                                1. Vegas has forced an early departure of the opposition's starting goaltender in three consecutive contests.

                                2. Dallas has dropped five straight on the road and is 3-8-1 away from home this season.

                                3. Vegas holds a pair of five-game winning streaks this season, matching the total by first-year teams during the NHL's first 99 seasons (1926-27 New York Rangers, 1979-80 Edmonton Oilers).
