    Preview: Jets at Avalanche

    Gracenote
    Nov 28, 2017

The Colorado Avalanche's early-season good vibrations have been offset with losses in six of their last nine contests, in addition to the suspension of Gabriel Landeskog. The Avalanche aim to persevere as the captain serves the first of a four-game ban on Wednesday when the Winnipeg Jets pay a visit to the Rocky Mountains.

Colorado has been dominant at home this season, but fell for just the second time in regulation - the first happened in Sweden when it was deemed the home team - with a 3-2 setback to Calgary on Saturday. Nathan MacKinnon set up Mikko Rantanen's power-play goal in the second period versus the Flames, giving the former top overall pick 13 assists and 17 points at home. The high-flying Jets brought their offense home from a four-game road trip and posted their seventh win in nine outings with a resounding 7-2 rout of Minnesota on Monday. Each member of the top line scored a goal and set up two others, with Kyle Connor collecting seven points (three goals, four assists) in his last six games while Mark Scheifele and Blake Wheeler increased their total to 20 points in the past 15.

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, TSN3 (Winnipeg), Altitude (Colorado)

ABOUT THE JETS (15-6-3): Connor Hellbuyck has yielded two or fewer goals in six of his last seven outings, posting a 5-2-0 mark in that stretch and improving his season record to 13-2-2. The 24-year-old permitted just one goal in each outing last season against the Avalanche, turning aside 49 of 51 shots in the process. Patrik Laine, who collected five points (two goals, three assists) versus Colorado last season, recorded 11 points in as many games before being held off the scoresheet in each of the last two outings.
ABOUT THE AVALANCHE (11-9-2): Rantanen has scored six of his seven goals and 11 of his 20 points with the man advantage this season. The 2015 first-round selection had - surprise, surprise - a power-play goal in Colorado's 3-2 overtime win over Winnipeg on Nov. 11, 2016, and added an assist with the man advantage in a 4-1 setback to the Jets on Dec. 18. With Landeskog suspended after cross-checking Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk, Sven Andrighetto likely will elevate to the top line to join MacKinnon and Rantanen.

    OVERTIME

    1. Colorado G Semyon Varlamov likely will make his return from a four-game absence due to illness versus Winnipeg, against which he split a pair of decisions despite turning aside 36 of 39 shots.

    2. Jets RW Joel Armia has seven points (two goals, five assists) in his past eight games.

    3. The Avalanche are 11-for-39 on the power play at home this season.

    PREDICTION: Jets 4, Avalanche 2

              Preview: Suns at Pistons

              Gracenote
              Nov 29, 2017

The Detroit Pistons are fresh off one of the most impressive victories of the current NBA season and look to ride the momentum when they host the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday. Detroit outplayed league-leading Boston en route to a 118-108 road win on Monday and owns the second-best record in the Eastern Conference.

The Pistons are perhaps the most surprising team in the NBA this season and added Monday's road victory to one at Golden State late last month. "I think we're at a good position," Detroit forward Tobias Harris told reporters. "I'm not looking at standings-wise - I'm looking at, as a team, where our heads are at. We're at a good vibe as a team, knowing that we have a really good formula night after night in how to win games." Phoenix shooting guard Devin Booker (right big toe) returned from a one-game absence to contribute 33 points and nine rebounds in Tuesday's 104-99 road win over Chicago. The 30-point performance was the eighth of the season for Booker, who made five 3-pointers in addition to recording his second-highest rebounding effort of the campaign.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona (Phoenix), FSN Detroit

ABOUT THE SUNS (8-14): Phoenix halted a three-game slide with the solid effort against the Bulls that included a 57-41 rebounding advantage. "I'm proud of this team," Booker told reporters afterward. "We fought hard. A lot of energy, talking on defense. Things that we needed to be working on, we did." The Suns received a superb performance from center Alex Len, who scored 13 points and tied his career best of 18 rebounds as he grabbed 12 or more boards for the eighth time this season.

ABOUT THE PISTONS (13-6): Detroit is eighth in the NBA in scoring defense (102.2) and is playing well on offense, with four players scoring in double digits. Center Andre Drummond recorded season highs of 26 points and 22 rebounds in the upset over Boston and ranks just fourth on the squad in scoring (14.4 points) as the players have bought into the team-first, balanced approach sought by coach Stan Van Gundy. "We've been sharing the ball all year," Van Gundy told reporters. "This is a really, really unselfish team who play for each other. Not one time this year has anybody complained about not getting shots, not getting the ball, any of that. And part of it is, the ball does always move."

              BUZZER BEATERS

              1. The Pistons have won five of their last six home meetings with the Suns.

              2. Phoenix SF TJ Warren scored 25 points versus the Bulls and is averaging 21.6 over his last five games.

              3. Harris was 5-for-6 from 3-point range while scoring 31 points against the Celtics - his third 30-point effort of the season.

              PREDICTION: Pistons 109, Suns 103

                  Preview: Thunder at Magic

                  Gracenote
                  Nov 28, 2017

The Oklahoma City Thunder will try to end their slide while extending the Orlando Magic's misery when the teams meet Wednesday in Florida. Since a 3-0 homestand earlier this month, the Thunder have lost four of five and barely put up a fight in a 97-81 setback at the Western Conference-worst Dallas Mavericks on Saturday.

Three full days of rest should help as Oklahoma City works to refine a struggling offense that included a 1-for-12 shooting effort at Dallas by star forward Paul George, who also missed practice Monday due to an illness. "If you look at the fact of the raw numbers of our shooting, we haven't shot the ball like we're potentially capable of," coach Billy Donovan told reporters Monday. "That's the optimism that I have going forward because I think that we can get to that point." The offense could wake up against a Magic squad that is allowing an average of 117.4 points during a dismal nine-game slide. Six of the losses have been by double digits, including Monday's 121-109 defeat in Indiana to cap a four-game road trip.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Oklahoma, FSN Florida (Orlando)

ABOUT THE THUNDER (8-11): Russell Westbrook has two triple-doubles in his last four games and fell an assist shy in the other two affairs as he begins to climb back toward the numbers that led to an MVP last season. Unfortunately, Westbrook (40.1 percent) has his lowest field-goal percentage since his rookie season, Carmelo Anthony (42.4) owns a career low mark and George (42.2) is down nearly four percentage points from last season as the offense continues to lack rhythm. "If you execute the play well and really set up your guy, do all the little things, then that'll allow for the passes," center Steven Adams told the team's website. "Obviously we need to move the ball more, but setting up your guy to get a nice, open pass – a crisp, easy one – that makes a big difference, too. All those small things really add up into the offense and really make us have a better shot, a better percentage shot."

ABOUT THE MAGIC (8-13): Jonathon Simmons replaced Terrence Ross in the starting lineup Monday as coach Frank Vogel looked for some sort of spark, but there was little impact on the defensive end and a 36-point fourth quarter by Indiana proved to be the difference. "It's really frustrating because I thought we were going to win that one," forward Aaron Gordon told reporters. "I thought we came out with great energy, but there was just a scoring drought there (early in the fourth quarter) for us. We're going through a drought and they are red hot." Leading scorer Evan Fournier is averaging 10.7 points on 32.4 percent shooting over his last three games.

                  BUZZER BEATERS

                  1. Westbrook averaged 49 points, 13.5 assists and 12.5 rebounds as the teams split two meetings last season.

                  2. Magic C Nikola Vucevic recorded five straight double-doubles.

                  3. Oklahoma City entered Tuesday second in the NBA in scoring defense (98.1), while Orlando was 28th (110).

                  PREDICTION: Thunder 106, Magic 99

                      Preview: Wizards at 76ers

                      Gracenote
                      Nov 29, 2017

The Washington Wizards are trying to navigate a period without four-time All-Star point guard John Wall by relying more on their bench. Washington hopes that formula can be successful again when it visits the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday, one night after its reserves outscored Minnesota's bench 49-11 in a 92-89 triumph.

Wall (knee) will miss about two more weeks while shooting guard Bradley Beal had an off-night (eight points on 2-of-11 shooting) against the Timberwolves before the second unit saved the day. "The good thing about our team, we've got guys that are willing to sacrifice and they understand that just because you start doesn't mean you have to finish the game," Wizards coach Scott Brooks told reporters after the victory. Philadelphia might be without rookie point guard Ben Simmons after he sprained his right ankle in Monday's 113-91 setback against Cleveland. Simmons, who is averaging 18.1 points, 9.1 rebounds and 7.4 assists, will test the ankle during a pregame walkthrough before a decision is made.

                      TV:
7 p.m. ET, NBCSN Washington, NBCSN Philadelphia

ABOUT THE WIZARDS (11-9): Small forward Otto Porter Jr. stepped up with Beal struggling and scored 22 points in the win over Minnesota, including the go-ahead jumper with 25 seconds left. Porter was the lone starter to score in double figures as bench players Kelly Oubre Jr. (16 points) and Ian Mahinmi (eight rebounds) were among the more valuable players in the contest. "They came in and played well for us," Porter told reporters of the reserves. "They gave us great energy. They were able to move the ball against them and play with pace, and we kind of fed with that energy in the second half."

ABOUT THE 76ERS (11-8): Philadelphia is a young team on the rise that had won five of six games prior to being routed by the Cavaliers and receiving a bit of a lesson. "I hate losing, but I think that's actually good," star center Joel Embiid told reporters of the loss. "We can't take any days off, we can't play comfortable. We just have to keep working hard and get better." Embiid recorded 30 points and 11 rebounds in the setback, but the outside shooting was atrocious as the 76ers made just 3-of-28 shots from 3-point range.

                      BUZZER BEATERS

                      1. Wall registered 28 points and eight assists while Beal scored 25 when the Wizards posted a 120-115 season-opening victory over the 76ers.

                      2. Philadelphia SF Robert Covington scored 29 points and matched his career high of seven 3-pointers in the earlier loss to Washington.

                      3. Washington backup SG Jodie Meeks connected on a season-high four 3-pointers against Minnesota after being 2-for-15 over the previous seven games.

                      PREDICTION: 76ers 112, Wizards 109

The Miami Heat look to make it a winning four-game road trip when they visit the New York Knicks on Wednesday. The Heat captured the first two contests of the trek to run their overall winning streak to three games before suffering a 108-97 loss to Cleveland on Tuesday.

Miami played porous defense in the first half of the setback, allowing 75 points en route to a 26-point halftime deficit. Point guard Goran Dragic scored just seven points after being named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week for producing three straight 20-point performances during the winning streak. New York has dropped three straight games after falling 103-91 to Portland on Monday. Star power forward Kristaps Porzingis (back) scored 22 points in his return from a one-game absence and is averaging 24.3 over his past four contests.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Miami), MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE HEAT (10-10): Coach Erik Spoelstra stated after Tuesday's loss that "not a lot of positives come out of this game," and he was most happy about his team playing again the next night. "This is the life we chose and the schedule they gave us," Spoelstra told reporters. "We're going to look forward to it, and (the Knicks) are a team that has been playing very well. They caught everybody's attention with how well they've been playing." Shooting guard Dion Waiters scored a team-best 21 points against Cleveland two nights after recording just seven versus Chicago on 2-of-10 shooting.

                          ABOUT THE KNICKS (10-10):
Center Enes Kanter (back) is slated to return after missing three games, and he certainly created a ruckus while sitting on the bench Monday. Kanter told teammates to go fight some Portland players and offered to pay the fines of anyone penalized by the league - and both Michael Beasley and Frank Ntilikina were given technical fouls a short time later after getting into a skirmish with Trail Blazers center Jusuf Nurkic. "The front office told me I cannot say stuff like that," Kanter told reporters after Tuesday's practice. "It's a learning process. This is my second language. When I say fight, it means compete, play hard, compete. You get a tech, you get a tech. They told me I cannot say stuff like that. I'm sorry about that. I'm sorry, NBA, my fault."

                          BUZZER BEATERS

                          1. The Heat have prevailed in each of their last six visits to Madison Square Garden.

                          2. Miami rookie backup C Bam Adebayo scored a season-best 19 points against Cleveland on 7-of-7 shooting.

                          3. New York SG Tim Hardaway Jr. is 10-for-30 from the field over his last two games.

                          PREDICTION: Knicks 112, Heat 108

The Toronto Raptors should be well-rested and primed to continue their solid play at home when they take on the visiting Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday. The Raptors had three full days off since capping a three-game road trip Saturday with a 34-point rout at Atlanta, which afforded coach Dwane Casey the opportunity to rest his starters down the stretch.

Reserves Norman Powell and Pascal Siakam both had a team-high 31 minutes and combined for 30 points on 13-of-22 shooting as Toronto matched its largest margin of victory this season. "The young guys came tonight and they were clicking," Casey said of the bench. "They were playing together, screening for each other. The spacing was good. The passing was good." The Hornets are coming off their most lopsided loss of the season, a 106-86 setback at home against San Antonio on Saturday. They are also going through a slow stretch of the schedule, as the visit to Toronto is one of just two games in a span of eight days.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FSN Southeast (Charlotte), Sportsnet One (Toronto)

ABOUT THE HORNETS (8-11): Kemba Walker scored 18 points on 8-of-12 from the floor against San Antonio, but his fellow starters were a combined 6-for-29 as the team was fatigued following a tight loss the night before in Cleveland. "Obviously it took a lot out of us," coach Steve Clifford told reporters. "I played those guys huge minutes (in Cleveland). I thought to start the game tonight we had the right attitude. We had very little legs." Dwight Howard notched his 11th double-double (10 points, 11 rebounds) despite playing a season-low 22 minutes.

ABOUT THE RAPTORS (12-7): DeMar DeRozan was held to two points in the win over Atlanta - snapping a string of 113 straight double-digit efforts - but he did hand out a season high-tying eight assists while still sitting out the entire fourth quarter. The three-time All-Star has seen his scoring average tumble more than four points this season but he is shooting 47.4 percent - his best mark since 2009-10 - and handing out a career-high 4.6 assists. DeRozan is averaging 25.6 points and 5.1 assists at home, compared to 21.4 and 4.3 on the road.

                              BUZZER BEATERS

                              1. Walker scored 11 of his 19 points in the final five-plus minutes and Charlotte scored 44 points in the fourth quarter to steal a 110-106 win at Toronto in the last meeting on March 29.

                              2. Raptors PG Kyle Lowry recorded a career-high 13 rebounds versus Atlanta for his third straight double-digit showing in the category.

                              3. Howard needs 25 rebounds to pass Paul Silas (12,357) and move into 21st on the NBA's all-time list, and 27 to get ahead of Dikembe Motombo for 20th.

                              PREDICTION: Raptors 110, Hornets 100
