      Preview: Pistons at Wizards

      Gracenote
      Nov 30, 2017

The Washington Wizards are already enduring a stretch without one star guard and they now have to hold their breath on another. The Wizards hope to have sharpshooter Bradley Beal in the lineup Friday when they make a pit stop at home to take on the streaking Detroit Pistons.

With John Wall sitting out his third straight game due to lingering knee issues, Beal took an elbow in the face during Wednesday's 118-113 loss at Philadelphia and will undergo further testing Thursday. "The eye is very important, so [the doctor] said there might be some things in the back going on that might not affect you right now but could affect me tonight or tomorrow," Beal told the Washington Post. The Wizards would love to have all hands on deck against a Pistons unit that has claimed three straight, including an impressive 10-point win at Eastern Conference-leading Boston and a 131-107 rout of Phoenix on Wednesday. "I thought it was very impressive to come out and play the way we did tonight after a huge win on Monday," Detroit coach Stan Van Gundy told reporters after the win over the Suns. "We were really on it from the start defensively, and we were moving the ball and playing with energy on offense."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Detroit, NBCS Washington

ABOUT THE PISTONS (14-6): Reggie Jackson produced 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting in Detroit's finest offensive output of the season Wednesday night, and the star guard was also impressed with how his team avoided a letdown following the win in Boston. "It was easy to get fired up for our last two games, but we had to find a way to bring energy to ourselves tonight," Jackson told the media. "We locked in and stayed with the game plan and our fans were amazing. We were more mature in our approach." Jackson's backup, Ish Smith, is averaging 12.3 points and 4.3 assists in 21 minutes during the three-game winning streak.

ABOUT THE WIZARDS (11-10): Beal still managed 21 points in 23 minutes before fouling out in the loss to Philadelphia, which saw Washington - led largely by its bench - make a furious comeback with 48 fourth-quarter points. Kelly Oubre Jr. led the charge by the reserves with 22 points, which comes a game after his 16 points paced a 49-point barrage by the bench in a win at Minnesota. Beal had 25 points to help Washington top Detroit 115-111 earlier this season.

      BUZZER BEATERS

      1. This marks one of just two home games in a span of 25 days for Washington.

      2. Pistons C Andre Drummond, who averages 0.9 assists for his career, has 13 over the last two contests.

      3. Wizards SG Jodie Meeks scored a season-high 21 points against the Sixers and is 7-for-12 from 3-point range over his last two games.

      PREDICTION: Pistons 105, Wizards 101

          Preview: Pacers at Raptors

          Gracenote
          Nov 30, 2017

The Toronto Raptors are winners of five straight at home and will try to avenge one of their recent road losses when they host the Indiana Pacers on Friday. The Raptors took five of their last seven overall but could not find a way around the Pacers in Indiana last Friday and ended up with a 107-104 setback.

Toronto bounced back from that defeat in impressive fashion with a 112-78 bludgeoning of the Atlanta Hawks to finish out the road trip and returned to Canada for the start of a three-game homestand with a 126-113 win over the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday, but that didn't stop coach Dwane Casey from sounding off about a trend of lackluster third-quarter play. "That's totally unacceptable," Casey told reporters. "We're not going to win anything if we come out with that attitude, if we don't fix it. Again, we've talked about, I don't know, start another five to start the second half? It's just mind-boggling." The Pacers are winners of six of their last eight games, with the two losses coming to conference leaders Boston and Houston. "That's exactly what I told our guys, that these are very good teams and it's going to be a challenge to not only play and defend them, but execute offensively against them," Indiana coach Nate McMillan told reporters.
TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FS Indiana, TSN 1/4 (Toronto)

ABOUT THE PACERS (12-10): Indiana brought in shooting guard Victor Oladipo from the Oklahoma City Thunder as part of the Paul George trade over the summer and is getting a leader as well as a new high scorer (22.8 points). Oladipo, who hit his first 11 shots in a 121-109 win over Orlando on Monday, scored 19 points in Wednesday's 118-97 loss to the Rockets and feels his team is capable of competing with the top teams. "They really made some tough shots in the second half and we missed some shots that we normally make today," Oladipo told reporters after the loss. "But you have to give them credit as they played well down the stretch. There's some things we can do better, obviously, and we have to continue to keep getting better."
ABOUT THE RAPTORS (13-7): Toronto has a pair of high-scoring guards in DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry, who combined for 66 points in Wednesday's win. Lowry scored a season-high 36 points in the victory while going 12-of-18 from the field and 8-of-11 from 3-point range. "You're just trying to find him, whatever," reserve guard Fred VanVleet told the Toronto Star of Lowry. "I think I had one I could have shot and I saw him, I gave it up right away. Eight-for-11 from 3 is pretty impressive and, when he's got it going like that, it's pretty hard to guard."

          BUZZER BEATERS

          1. Raptors PF Serge Ibaka is 0-of-12 from 3-point range over the last four games.

          2. Pacers C Myles Turner (knee soreness) is questionable for Friday.

          3. Toronto beat Indiana twice at home last season by an average of 18 points.

          PREDICTION: Raptors 113, Pacers 111

              Preview: Hornets at Heat

              Gracenote
              Nov 30, 2017

The Miami Heat looked listless without star center Hassan Whiteside in a loss at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday and they may need to find a way to get by without their big man going forward. Whiteside will be questionable with an ongoing knee issue when the Heat begin a two-game homestand against the Charlotte Hornets on Friday.

Whiteside was absent for the 115-86 loss to the New York Knicks and expressed concern for the injury that has caused him to miss six games on the season. "It has really been bothering me throughout the season," said Whiteside, who is averaging 14.9 points and 12.7 rebounds. "You know, I sat out, I missed them games, I came back, and it's still bothering me." If shorthanded, the Heat could be getting the Hornets at a good time, as Charlotte lost three in a row after a 126-113 setback at Toronto on Wednesday and could be without point guard and leading scorer Kemba Walker (shoulder). Walker missed the loss to the Raptors as his team fell to 1-9 on the road.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Charlotte), FS Sun (Miami)

ABOUT THE HORNETS (8-12): Coach Steve Clifford told reporters that Walker's shoulder is still very sore, leaving the All-Star guard questionable going into Friday. His replacement against Toronto, Michael Carter-Williams, was 1-for-10 from the floor and is 1-for-15 with 10 turnovers in 49 minutes over his last two games. Backup guard Jeremy Lamb had 18 points in Wednesday's loss and scored in double figures in all but one game this season.

ABOUT THE HEAT (10-11): With Whiteside hobbled, guard Goran Dragic's sudden slump comes at a bad time. Dragic, who averaged 23.7 points during a recent three-game winning streak, produced a total of 13 points on 4-of-17 shooting during the team's two-game slide, missing all five of his 3-point attempts. "We have to figure out this thing quick and, you know, just bring that energy every night," Dragic told reporters in New York. "If you play hard and you lose, you can check yourself in the mirror and say they were just better. But if you don't give everything you've got, you can't say that."

              BUZZER BEATERS

              1. Heat C Kelly Olynyk scored a team-high 18 points in Wednesday's loss and is averaging 11.3 while making 7-of-11 3-pointers over his last four games.

              2. Lamb is 28-for-29 from the line over a span of eight games.

              3. The teams split four meetings last season, each team going 1-1 on its home floor.

              PREDICTION: Heat 99, Hornets 95

                  Preview: Kings at Bulls

                  Gracenote
                  Dec 1, 2017

The Sacramento Kings haven't won in Chicago this decade but figure to have a good shot at halting their seven-game skid at the United Center when they visit the hapless Bulls on Friday. Sacramento last left the Windy City victorious on Dec. 21, 2009, but the current version of the Bulls owns the worst record in the NBA at 3-17.

Chicago played well but suffered a 111-110 loss at Denver on Thursday - its seventh straight setback and 12th in the last 13 games. "We had a lot of really good performances and I really thought we battled," Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg told reporters. "That is what you have to do on the road to give yourself a chance. I am really proud of our guys." Sacramento is just 2-9 on the road as it begins a four-game trek, but it did defeat Golden State in its most-recent road contest. However, the Kings followed up the impressive victory with a dreadful performance as they suffered a 112-87 home loss to Milwaukee.

                  TV:
8 p.m. ET, NBCSN California (Sacramento), NBCSN Chicago

ABOUT THE KINGS (6-15): Sacramento scored just 11 second-quarter points and trailed by 24 at halftime during the poor showing against Milwaukee. "We didn't do the things we needed to do to make it a close game," rookie guard Frank Mason III told reporters. "They got anywhere they wanted on the court, a lot of easy layups, uncontested shots, things like that." The Kings allowed the Bucks to shoot 59.2 percent while hitting only 40.3 percent of their attempts, with shooting guard Garrett Temple (18 points) being the lone productive starter.

ABOUT THE BULLS (3-17): Forward Nikola Mirotic (facial fractures) is about to return and was assigned to the Windy City Bulls of the G League as Hoiberg said he needs to get in game shape. Mirotic hasn't played this season after getting punched in the face by teammate Bobby Portis during a training-camp altercation, and both players have reached an uneasy truce and are prepared to get along. "Why couldn't I? We're teammates, just trying to help this team win as much as possible," Portis told reporters. "Obviously, we're struggling right now trying to find a win, and I just want to do everything I can to help my team find a win."

                  BUZZER BEATERS

                  1. The Bulls have won the last five meetings, including both of last season's matchups.

                  2. Sacramento C Willie Cauley-Stein is averaging 16 points on 27-of-43 shooting over his last four games.

                  3. Chicago SG Zach LaVine (knee) also was sent to Windy City and should make his team debut by mid-December.

                  PREDICTION: Bulls 97, Kings 94

                      Preview: Spurs at Grizzlies

                      Gracenote
                      Nov 30, 2017

The Memphis Grizzlies are losers of nine straight games and are on their second coach of the season after firing David Fizdale on Monday and naming J.B. Bickerstaff as the interim head coach. Bickerstaff will try to earn his first win at the helm when the Grizzlies host the San Antonio Spurs in the back end of a home-and-home set on Friday.

Memphis did not make any drastic improvements in its first game under Bickerstaff and was held below 100 points for the sixth straight game while struggling to defend in a 104-95 loss at San Antonio on Wednesday. "Every night we show up, you can guarantee (the players are) going to give you what they got," Bickerstaff told reporters. "That's the only way you'll get out of it. If you're down on yourself and feeling sorry for ourselves, no one is coming to save us. The only way we'll get out of it is we'll tighten up in that room in there, which we've done. We'll band together, go keep competing and the opportunity will come, and we'll get our win." To get that win, the Grizzlies will have to find a way to stop Spurs power forward LaMarcus Aldridge. The veteran had his way with the Memphis front line on Wednesday while going off for 41 points on 17-of-24 shooting.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Southwest (San Antonio), FS Southeast (Memphis)

ABOUT THE SPURS (14-7): Aldridge is on fire of late and is 30-of-43 from the floor in the last two games, including 3-of-3 from 3-point range, and didn't miss a free throw in any of the last five contests. Aldridge figures to get some help with the scoring load eventually from All-Star Kawhi Leonard, who is inching back from a quad injury and has yet to make his season debut, but for now seems comfortable as the main piece. Tony Parker (quad) is on a minutes limit two games into his own return from a quad injury but managed 10 points in 18 minutes during Wednesday's win.
ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (7-13): Memphis general manager Chris Wallace was adamant that the team is not in a rebuilding mode with the firing of Fizdale, and he has no plans to shop stars Marc Gasol or Mike Conley. "We're full speed ahead," Wallace told ESPN.com. "We've been in the playoffs seven years in a row. We've got a team when fully healthy and we get everything together is more athletic, more versatile and more potent offensively than we've had for a number of years. Even though the going has been a little difficult early, there's still 62 (games) to play. We believe in this team. We're hoping -- got our fingers crossed -- that we'll get everybody healthy soon." The biggest missing piece is Conley, who sat out the last seven games with an Achilles injury but is expected back in 2-3 weeks.

                      BUZZER BEATERS

                      1. Grizzlies SF Chandler Parsons (knee soreness) sat out Wednesday and is day-to-day.

                      2. Spurs SF Kyle Anderson scored in double figures in each of the last six games.

                      3. San Antonio took the last three regular-season meetings and won once at Memphis during the first round of the playoffs last spring -- a 103-96 triumph in the clinching Game 6.

                      PREDICTION: Spurs 108, Grizzlies 102

                          Preview: Timberwolves at Thunder

                          Gracenote
                          Nov 30, 2017

Things are not going well for the Oklahoma City Thunder of late, and a second-half meltdown in Orlando on Wednesday was the latest issue. The Thunder will try to solve some of their problems in front of their own fans when they open a three-game homestand by hosting the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday.

Oklahoma City owns one win in its last six games -- an impressive triumph over the defending champion Golden State Warriors -- and watched its offense grind to a halt while the Magic used a 26-3 run in the second half on Wednesday to turn a close game into a 121-108 win. "As a team, we have to know what is working for us and staying steady and staying with it," Thunder forward Paul George told reporters. "We're great when we're locked into our system. That's where we have to be. We have to find that level of play every possession for 48 minutes." The Timberwolves can relate to that kind of inconsistency after trading wins and losses over the last six games, and they followed up a 92-89 loss at home to Washington on Tuesday with a 120-102 win the next night at New Orleans. "In the NBA, there's an excuse every night," Minnesota coach Tom Thibodeau told reporters. "Whether it's travel, injuries, back-to-backs. Or you can make good. When the ball goes up, you have to be ready to go."
TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBATV, FS North (Minnesota), FS Oklahoma

ABOUT THE TIMBERWOLVES (13-9): Minnesota tends to ebb and flow based on the play of swingman Jimmy Butler, who went for 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting on Wednesday after going 5-of-17 from the floor in Tuesday's setback. "We played great as a team," Butler told reporters. "When we're out there playing hard, moving that ball, playing with so much confidence, it looks like some pretty good basketball." Butler is shooting 45.8 percent from the field in wins and 41 percent in losses, a trait he shares with center Karl-Anthony Towns (54.5 percent in wins, 50 percent in losses), who averaged 30 points and 15.5 rebounds in two wins over Oklahoma City in October.
ABOUT THE THUNDER (8-12): Reigning MVP Russell Westbrook is committed to building a strong bond on the court with stars George and Carmelo Anthony and finding a consistent rhythm that allows the team to be successful. "We have to lock in," Westbrook told reporters. "That starts with me and I take ownership in everything that is going on because I've been here. I know the standards that we set here in Oklahoma City. I have to set an example. It starts with me and we're going to turn this thing around." Westbrook totaled 37 points and 11 rebounds in his fifth straight game with at least a double-double on Wednesday but committed seven turnovers and went for an x-ray after the game on a bruised left hand that came back negative.

                          BUZZER BEATERS

                          1. George scored 22 points on 7-of-17 shooting Wednesday after managing two points on 1-of-12 from the floor in a loss at Dallas on Saturday.

                          2. Timberwolves C Gorgui Dieng scored 19 points on Wednesday -- two more than in his previous four games combined.

                          3. Minnesota took the first two meetings this season by a combined five points.

                          PREDICTION: Timberwolves 112, Thunder 109

                              Preview: Pelicans at Jazz

                              Gracenote
                              Dec 1, 2017

The Utah Jazz are recovering from a slow start and look to win their fifth consecutive contest when they host the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday. Utah erupted for 100 points over the final three quarters and established a season-high scoring output with Thursday's 126-107 road win over the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Jazz are averaging 115.8 points and a winning margin of 22.8 during their winning streak as the offense has begun clicking after some early-season issues. "We've got a lot of great, talented guys here," backup guard Alec Burks told reporters after the win over the Clippers. "We're playing with pace and tempo and making great reads. It's good to play a fast pace." New Orleans has dropped its last two games, and star power forward Anthony Davis was ejected for the first time in his career in Wednesday's 120-102 loss to Minnesota when he argued after being called for an offensive foul. "When we lost A.D., that changed everything," Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry told reporters. "He did exactly what we told him to do, take the ball strong to the basket. We tell our big guys to take the ball to the basket hard and try to create contact. I'll leave it at that."

TV: 9 p.m. ET, FSN New Orleans, AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountain (Utah)

ABOUT THE PELICANS (11-10): New Orleans figures to ride Davis (25.6 points) and center DeMarcus Cousins (25.1) in the interior on Friday with stellar Utah defender Rudy Gobert still sidelined with a leg injury. Cousins was held to 17 points by Minnesota without his running mate and said the situation was difficult to deal with during the flow of the contest. "It was tough adjusting like that on the fly," Cousins told reporters. "Things like that happen. We should've done a better job regrouping, gathering ourselves and finishing the game as a team."

ABOUT THE JAZZ (11-11): Shooting guard Rodney Hood (ankle) is slated to miss his third consecutive game, but Burks picked up the scoring slack against Los Angeles with season bests of 28 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Burks received 29 minutes of playing time and was 11-of-17 shooting, including four 3-pointers. "He was terrific," coach Quin Snyder told reporters. "He is getting more and more solid defensively. Alec got buckets. He is capable of doing that, and we rode him for a long time."
