NHL GAME OF THE DAY: BLACKHAWKS AT CAPITALS BETTING PREVIEW AND ODDS

                Chicago Blackhawks at Washington Capitals (A: +115, H: -135, T: 5.5)

Two perennial powers heading in opposite directions will collide on Wednesday night when the Washington Capitals host the Chicago Blackhawks. The Capitals are starting to hit their stride with five wins in their last six games, but the Blackhawks are battling to avoid the Central Division basement after dropping four in a row.

Captain Alex Ovechkin became the first player in the league to score 20 goals and in the process moved into 20th place on the all-time list with his 578th tally. "He's one of the best goal-scorers in the game and he knows where to put the puck," goaltender Philipp Grubauer said of Ovechkin, one of 11 players with 20 goals in each of his first 13 seasons. "He's dangerous and you can't leave him alone that many times." Washington's only loss in the past six games came at the hands of the Los Angeles Kings, who sent Chicago to its fourth consecutive defeat (0-2-2) with a 3-1 road victory on Sunday. The Blackhawks have struggled against the Capitals, losing six of their last seven overall and the past six visits to Washington, including a 6-0 drubbing in their last trip in January.

                TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBCSN

LINE HISTORY: The Capitals opened as -145 home favorites and some surprising Blackhawks action has forced books to drop the moneyline down to -135 on the home side. The total hit betting boards at 5.5 and has not moved off that opening number. Check out the complete line history here.

                GOALIE SHOWDOWN:

Anton Forsberg (CHI) vs. Braden Holtby (WAS)

                INJURY REPORT:

Blackhawks - G Corey Crawford (Mid Dec, Lower Body), RW Marian Hossa (Out For Season, Illness), D Michal Rozsival (Out Indefinitely, Concussion).

Capitals - C Chandler Stephenson (Probable, Upper Body), RW T.J. Oshie (Doubtful, Head), LW Andre Burakovsky (Mid Dec, Thumb).

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (12-10-5, 12-14 O/U): Backup netminder Anton Forsberg has one win in nine appearances but he deserved a better fate in back-to-back losses to Dallas and Los Angeles over the weekend while subbing for the injured Corey Crawford. Forsberg turned aside 54 of 57 shots in the two defeats but Chicago mustered a combined three goals in support of him. "He’s doing everything we need him to do in there," captain Jonathan Toews said. "We just need to support him, create some offense and find some ways to get some wins for him.”

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (16-11-1, 15-13 O/U): Forward T.J. Oshie, who is third on the team in scoring, is expected to sit out Wednesday's contest, listed as "very doubtful" by coach Barry Trotz when his head hit the boards in what appeared to be an inadvertent hit by San Jose's Joe Thornton. Andre Burakovsky practiced for a second straight day but Trotz said his return from surgery on his broken thumb will likely be put off another game or two. However, forward Chandler Stephenson (upper body) is expected back in the lineup following a one-game absence.

                TRENDS:

                * Blackhawks are 3-14 in their last 17 vs. a team with a winning record.
                * Capitals are 5-1 in their last 6 overall.
                * Under is 5-0 in Blackhawks last 5 road games.
                * Over is 17-4-5 in Capitals last 26 vs. Central.
                * Blackhawks are 0-6 in the last 6 meetings in Washington.

                  Preview: Kings at Cavaliers

                  Gracenote
                  Dec 5, 2017

The Cleveland Cavaliers are winners of 12 in a row and are showing no sign that they will slow down anytime soon. The Cavaliers will try to make it 13 straight when they host the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday.

Cleveland is settling on a rotation that works with Tristan Thompson (calf) and Iman Shumpert (knee) out, plus every team would look better with LeBron James on the roster and enjoying one of the most productive seasons of his career. James collected 23 points, seven rebounds and six assists in a 113-91 drubbing at Chicago on Monday while going 9-of-15 from the field to raise his shooting percentage to .584, which would mark the highest percentage of his illustrious career if he manages to sustain his current pace. The Kings are 29th in the NBA in scoring average at 95.7 points and are losers of eight of their last 12, but at least they managed to go over 100 points in back-to-back games. Sacramento squeezed out a 107-106 win at NBA-worst Chicago on Friday but fell 109-104 at Milwaukee the next night to drop to 1-1 on its four-game road trip.
TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBCS California (Sacramento), FS Ohio (Cleveland)

ABOUT THE KINGS (7-16): Sacramento is trying to build around its younger players but continues to get its most consistent production from veteran power forward Zach Randolph. The 36-year-old is averaging 23.5 points on 22-of-34 shooting and 10 rebounds through the first two games of the trip and logged 34 minutes Saturday on the second night of a back-to-back despite beginning the game on the bench. Fellow veteran George Hill, 31, is having a more difficult time carving out a niche for himself on the young team and logged a season-low 18 minutes on Saturday while scoring in single digits for the third straight game.
ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (17-7): One player embracing a new role with Cleveland is All-Star Dwyane Wade, who agreed to come off the bench and lead the second unit after joining forces with his good friend James. Wade tied for the team lead in scoring with 24 points in 26 minutes on Monday and is averaging 19 points on 59.2 percent shooting over the last four contests. "I mean, he's run a franchise before," James told reporters of Wade. "He's ran units before. There's not one situation that he hasn't been in, so it's a luxury for our team to be able to have him to come off our bench and be able to lead that group. The way he's playing right now, he's just in a great groove. And you guys know me, I'm extremely happy to have him."

                      Preview: Bulls at Pacers

                      Gracenote
                      Dec 5, 2017

The Indiana Pacers were recently having some trouble battling the teams near the top of their respective conferences, but they have no trouble winning games against teams below them in the standings. The Pacers will try to prove that once again when they host the NBA-worst Chicago Bulls on Wednesday.

Indiana dropped games at Houston and Toronto before coming home on Monday and breezing past the New York Knicks 115-97 in the opener of a six-game homestand. "It was about us tonight, coming out and trying to take care of business, playing a better game than we certainly played in New York (a 108-101 loss on Nov. 5), but a better game than our last two opponents," Pacers coach Nate McMillan told reporters after the win. "I thought tonight we had high energy on the defensive end of the floor. We were scrapping, we were challenging every pass." The Bulls are losers of nine in a row and were run off the floor by the Cleveland Cavaliers in a 113-91 setback on Monday. Chicago seemed to be making progress with four losses by single digits, including a pair of one-point setbacks, before allowing Cleveland to shoot 51.9 percent from the floor.
TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBCS Chicago, FS Indiana

ABOUT THE BULLS (3-19): Promising rookie forward Lauri Markkanen is already the go-to scorer for the young team but is struggling with his shot of late and went 5-of-13 from the floor on Monday to drop to 39.3 percent on the season. The Arizona product did not hit at least half of his shots in any of the last eight games and is 15-of-53 from 3-point range in that span. The Bulls are getting solid play from second-year point guard Kris Dunn, who led the team with 15 points on Monday and scored in double figures in 13 of the last 18 contests.
ABOUT THE PACERS (13-11): Veteran forward Thaddeus Young scored 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting on Monday and went 2-of-2 from 3-point range. The effort marked his third game this season with 20 or more points and seventh time that he connected on multiple 3-pointers. "That's what a lot of teams are going towards, putting up a lot of 3s and trying to get in transition and get a lot of layups," Young told the team's website. "Hopefully we can continue to do that throughout the course of the season. (Monday) was a good win for us and we have to look towards playing Chicago."

                      BUZZER BEATERS

                      1. Bulls SF Denzel Valentine is 4-of-17 from 3-point range over the last four games.

                      2. Pacers C Domantas Sabonis recorded a double-double on Monday with 12 points and 12 rebounds - his first since Nov. 17.

                      3. Indiana breezed to a 105-87 win at Chicago on Nov. 10 behind 25 points from SG Victor Oladipo.

                      PREDICTION: Pacers 109, Bulls 94

                          Preview: Hawks at Magic

                          Gracenote
                          Dec 5, 2017

The Orlando Magic have struggled enough lately, losing 11 of their past 13 games entering Wednesday’s home contest with the Atlanta Hawks, so committing turnovers and losing their composure only makes winning more difficult. Such was the case Monday, when Orlando registered 20 turnovers and Marreese Speights’ flagrant foul helped send the Magic to a 104-94 loss at Charlotte.

“So that was definitely the turning point,” Orlando coach Frank Vogel told the media afterward in describing Speights' foul. “But, if we don’t turn the ball over as much as we did, we don’t have to worry about that.” The Hawks also are finding wins hard to come by, following up Saturday’s impressive victory at Brooklyn with a 110-90 Monday drubbing at home by the Nets. The Hawks have won just five games on the season and are missing two frontcourt starters to injuries, and did not help their cause Monday by missing 17 of their first 18 second-half shots. “It just looked like we were a little bit short on some good looks,” Atlanta coach Mike Budenholzer told reporters after the game. “Then we had some shots that just went in and out.”

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Southeast (Atlanta), FSN Florida (Orlando)

ABOUT THE HAWKS (5-18): Atlanta shot just 36.6 percent from the field in Monday’s loss as Dennis Schroder scored a team-high 19 points, and he is averaging 23.3 points in his past three games. Center Dewayne Dedmon and forward John Collins both are out with injuries, and starting center Miles Plumlee scored one point in 22 minutes against the Nets. The Hawks are fourth in the NBA in steals per game (9.1) and forced a season-high 24 turnovers Monday.

                              Preview: Mavericks at Celtics

The Boston Celtics utilized a dominant stretch on the defensive end during their hot start, but the offensive attack is beginning to catch up for the NBA's top team. The Celtics will try to continue to pile up the points and win their fourth straight when they finish a five-game homestand against the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday.

Kyrie Irving scored 32 points and Al Horford finished with 20, nine rebounds and eight assists as Boston shot over 50 percent from the floor for the fifth straight time in a 111-100 win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday. "I think it's just the work I've been putting in. It's starting to pay off for me," Horford told reporters. "I feel like we're starting to find our rhythm as a group, and I'm finding my rhythm, too." Boston's 16-game winning streak earlier in the season included a 110-102 overtime victory at Dallas, which was in the early stages of turning around a dismal start. Since opening 2-14, the Mavericks are 5-3 and they have their second two-game winning streak in that span after Monday's 122-105 victory over Denver.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (Dallas), NBCSN Boston

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (7-17): Harrison Barnes scored 22 points and was part of a Dallas unit that shot a season-high 57 percent and turned the ball over a season-low seven times in Monday's win. "Our identity just happens to be very gritty on defense and have each other's backs, and then ball security on offense," rookie Dennis Smith Jr. told the media after a 20-point effort. "If we do both of those things, we're gonna win a lot of games." Reserve guard Yogi Ferrell, who was 5-for-23 from the floor over the previous three games, provided a spark off the bench with 16 points on 7-of-9.

ABOUT THE CELTICS (21-4): Irving and Horford are the veteran stars carrying this unit, but the ease with which rookie Jayson Tatum has taken on a key supporting role continues to impress. "I think his mannerisms are just one that you can't see if he's rattled or not," Bucks coach Jason Kidd said after Tatum opened the game with four 3-pointers in as many attempts in the first quarter. "His composure is at a very high level to only be 19." Tatum finished 4-of-5 from beyond the arc and entered Tuesday leading the NBA at 51.3 percent from long range, including 9-of-13 over a four-game stretch.

                              1. Irving had a season-high 47 points - including 10 in OT - in the first meeting.

                              2. Barnes averages 7.6 rebounds on the season but has at least eight in six straight games, including 10 in back-to-back outings.

                              3. Horford is shooting 65.3 percent at home this season, compared to 48.4 percent on the road.
