      Preview: Raptors at 76ers

      Gracenote
      Dec 21, 2017

The Philadelphia 76ers are moving in the wrong direction and it won’t be easy to turn things around fast as they host the red-hot Toronto Raptors on Thursday night in the first of a home-and-home set. The 76ers, who visit Toronto on Saturday, have lost three in a row and seven of eight after a 101-95 setback against Sacramento on Tuesday without star center Joel Embiid (back) for the second straight night.

“Anytime you have this volume of losses in the month of December, you have a tendency to second-guess,” Philadelphia coach Brett Brown told reporters. “But we’ll stay strong, stay together, and welcome some healthy people back into the mix.” Embiid (24.1 points, 11.0 rebounds) is also expected to miss the matchup against the Raptors, who have won four in a row and 10 of their last 11 contests after rolling over Charlotte 129-111 on Wednesday. All-star guard DeMar DeRozan poured in 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field in the victory for Toronto, which has scored at least 115 in three of the past four games. The Raptors have been almost unbeatable at home this season (11-1), but seem to be a different team on the road (10-7).

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Sportsnet One (Toronto), NBCSN Philadelphia

ABOUT THE RAPTORS (21-8): DeRozan scored at least 28 for the third time in four games Wednesday while forward Serge Ibaka recorded 24 points against Charlotte despite being slowed by a knee injury. Rookie forward OG Anunoby poured in a season-high 20 points, draining 6-of-7 from 3-point range, and has scored in double figures in back-to-back games for the first time in his career. Point guard Kyle Lowry runs the show for Toronto and should be well rested after being limited to 24 minutes on Wednesday when he scored 11 and dished out eight assists.

ABOUT THE 76ERS (14-16): Rookie Ben Simmons has drained 20-of-34 from the field the last three games and boasts a pair of triple-doubles along with four double-doubles in nine contests this month. “He really has an abundance of growth to make, and he will,” Brown told reporters. “To think that he can put his signature on the NBA game like he does with so much room for improvement in some skill areas is exciting.” Simmons averages 17.2 points, 9.1 rebounds and 7.9 assists while guard J.J. Redick is contributing 16.5 points, but he left the last game with a hamstring injury.

      BUZZER BEATERS

      1. The Raptors have won 16 of the last 17 meetings, including a 128-94 triumph on Oct. 21 with 30 points from DeRozan.

      2. Philadelphia PF Trevor Booker returned Tuesday after missing one game with an ankle injury, recording six points and six rebounds in 16 minutes.

      3. Toronto C Jonas Valanciunas boasts 404 career blocks after posting one Wednesday to pull within one of Antonio Davis for fourth on the franchise’s all-time list.

      PREDICTION: 76ers 108, Raptors 100

          Preview: Celtics at Knicks

          Gracenote
          Dec 21, 2017

The New York Knicks expect to have star forward Kristaps Porzingis back in the lineup when they make a pit stop in Madison Square Garden on Thursday to host the Boston Celtics. Porzingis has missed the last two games due to knee soreness, and the Knicks dropped to 1-5 without the 7-3 Latvian when they fell 109-91 at Charlotte on Monday.

"I still feel it just a bit," Porzingis told reporters at practice Wednesday. "This kind of injury I'm going to feel it for a little bit. It's nothing bad. I just got to make sure the knee's stable and I'm feeling stable on the court. I can't have instability sensation." New York lost at Boston earlier in the season as the Celtics were in the early stages of a 22-2 run, but they've split their last eight games and lost 90-89 on Wednesday night at home against a Miami Heat squad without its top two scorers. Kyrie Irving produced 33 points but missed a potential game-winner at the buzzer as Boston was held below 90 points for the second time this season. Irving was one of three 20-point scorers for the Celtics in the 110-89 win over the Knicks in the first meeting, while Porzingis was held to 12 points on 3-of-14 shooting.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT, NBCSN Boston

ABOUT THE CELTICS (26-8): One of the bright spots in the loss to Miami was another hot-shooting night for Marcus Smart, who hit five 3-pointers and is 9-for-13 from long range over the last two games. Rookie Jayson Tatum, who leads the NBA in 3-point percentage (50.5), missed both of his tries and also suffered a dislocated pinky finger that has his status in doubt for Thursday. "The doctors looked at it and felt like it was structurally OK," coach Brad Stevens told reporters of Tatum's finger. "They taped it up and he'll probably be sore tomorrow."

ABOUT THE KNICKS (16-14): New York had won four straight while averaging 111.5 points before being held to 3-for-18 from 3-point range in the loss to the Hornets. Two of the 3-pointers came from forward Michael Beasley, who continued his solid play in place of Porzingis with 23 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots. The 28-year-old Beasley is averaging 26.5 points over the last two games and 20.2 on 54.7 percent shooting in his six starts, compared to 6.9 on 48.1 percent as a reserve.

          BUZZER BEATERS

          1. New York owns an Eastern Conference-leading 14 home wins.

          2. Knicks SG Courtney Lee was held to a season-low two points on 1-of-8 shooting on Monday.

          3. The Celtics have won three straight at Madison Square Garden.

          PREDICTION: Knicks 111, Celtics 109

              Preview: Grizzlies at Suns

              Gracenote
              Dec 21, 2017

The Phoenix Suns will try to follow up a winning road trip with a rare victory at home when they host the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday. The Suns, who have lost five in a row at home and are 4-12 in the desert overall, won the first two games of their three-game trip before falling at the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday.

T.J. Warren scored 22 points in the 108-95 setback but he was 9-for-24 from the floor and Phoenix shot 36.1 percent. The Grizzlies were even worse in that department in a 97-84 loss at Golden State on Wednesday, hitting a season-low 33.3 percent of their shots. Marc Gasol was the lone Memphis player with more than 10 points by finishing with 21, although he didn't escape the shooting issues in a 5-for-15 effort. It was the 18th loss in the last 20 games for the Grizzlies, who have dropped eight in a row away from home.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, FSN Southeast (Memphis), FSN Arizona (Phoenix)

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (9-22): Gasol continues to be the steady figure in the middle of a sinking ship and he fell a rebound shy of his third double-double in the last four games in Wednesday's loss. The veteran big man is 8-for-13 from 3-point range over the last three games while averaging 21.3 points. Memphis, which has been held below 100 points in five straight contests, returns to Phoenix the day after Christmas to begin a five-game road trip.

ABOUT THE SUNS (11-22): Phoenix won its first two games since signing guard Isaiah Canaan with the NBA's injury hardship exception, but the Murray State product was unable to provide much of a boost in Wednesday's loss. Canaan, who averaged 16 points on 60 percent shooting in 27 minutes in the two victories, was 2-for-12 from the floor against the Clippers. Warren was the only Sun to play more than 30 minutes as he shot under 40 percent for the fourth time in a five-game stretch.

              BUZZER BEATERS

              1. Suns G Devin Booker (groin) is still expected to be out at least another week but reportedly has progressed to doing wind sprints.

              2. Grizzlies SG Andrew Harrison is 2-for-10 from the field over the last two games after going 14-for-22 over the previous three.

              3. Memphis took all three meetings last season and has won four straight overall.

              PREDICTION: Suns 103, Grizzlies 95

                  Preview: Spurs at Jazz

                  Gracenote
                  Dec 21, 2017

The Utah Jazz made the playoffs for the first time in five seasons in 2016-17 and a return trip the postseason is not looking like a strong probability the last few weeks. The Jazz have dropped seven of their last eight games after being thumped by 28 points last time out and things don’t get any easier Thursday night when they host the surging San Antonio Spurs.

Utah turned the ball over 18 times and shot 35.6 percent from the field in a 107-79 loss at Oklahoma City on Wednesday to finish a 1-5 road trip. “We started the game like we didn’t really believe we could win,” Jazz forward Thabo Sefolosha told reporters. “It was one of those nights. At the same time, we can’t say that every time we get blown out. I think it’s one of those games we have to look back on and see what we didn’t do right.” San Antonio rested forward Kawhi Leonard and point guard Tony Parker on Wednesday, but it grinded out a 93-91 victory at Portland for its seventh win in the past nine contests. Leading scorer LaMarcus Aldridge recorded 22 points while making a key block in the final seconds of the victory, and boasts four double-doubles in the last nine games for the Spurs.

                  TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT, CW35 (Utah)

ABOUT THE SPURS (22-10): Leonard has averaged 10.7 points and drained 14-of-28 shots from the field while playing three of the last five games after missing the first 27 of the campaign with a quad injury. Parker is averaging 8.4 points in nine games this season and the Spurs welcomed the return of small forward Kyle Anderson on Wednesday and the former UCLA standout had five points in 24 minutes after missing seven games with a knee injury. Center Pau Gasol had 20 points and 17 rebounds against Portland after managing to score 12 combined in the previous four games.

ABOUT THE JAZZ (14-18): Utah was without leading scorer Donovan Mitchell (17.7) on Wednesday due to a toe injury and the rookie guard’s status for the first of a two-game home set is uncertain. Rodney Hood took Mitchell’s place in the starting lineup against Oklahoma City and recorded 17 points after scoring 26 at Houston in the previous game and averages 17.6 overall this season. The Jazz will need more from power forward Derrick Favors, who returned after a one-game absence due to a concussion Wednesday night but is averaging 5.7 points in his last three contests.

                  BUZZER BEATERS

                  1. San Antonio G Patty Mills has connected on 18-of-27 from the field over the last four contests.

                  2. Utah SG Alec Burks registered 14 points off the bench Wednesday, but is just 9-for-32 from the field in his past four outings.

                  3. The Spurs have won six of the last eight meetings, but the team split four contests in 2016-17.

                  PREDICTION: Spurs 106, Jazz 94

I'll take my chances here with San Antonio as a short road favorite against the Jazz on Thursday. I know the Spurs are playing in the 2nd game of a back-to-back in the thin air of Utah, but this is one of the few teams I believe you can trust in this spot. It's worth noting that San Antonio rested both Kawhi Leonard and Tony Parker last night, so both will be ready to roll tonight. I also think that we are going to see Leonard get a little more expanded role in terms of minutes played. At the same time, Utah is in a similar spot here after just playing at OKC last night and will be playing their 3rd game in 4 days. Star rookie Donovan Mitchell wasn't able to go last night because of a right big toe contusion and while he's listed as questionable I wouldn't be shocked if he doesn't play and if he does I don't think he's going to be able to perform at the level needed to make a game of this. The offense was absolutely dreadful without him last night, where they scored just 9 points in the 1st quarter and 79 for the game. Give me the Spurs -3!

The Phoenix Suns have gone 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games overall. This is a deep team that has been able to overcome the losses of Bledsoe and Booker. I like them getting points at home tonight against the Memphis Grizzlies, who are 2-18 SU & 4-15-1 ATS in their last 20 games overall. I’m not really sure how they can be favored here. It’s also a bad situation for the Grizzlies playing the 2nd of a back-to-back after losing at Golden State last night. They won’t be nearly as excited to face the Suns after playing the Warriors. Memphis is 2-10 ATS as a favorite this season. The Grizzlies are 1-9 ATS against teams with losing record this season. Give me the Suns.

                              NBA | Spurs vs Jazz
                              Play on: UNDER 197 -103

                              Jack’s Free Pick Thursday: Spurs/Jazz UNDER 197
I think the fact that both Utah and San Antonio are fatigued coming into this game will lead to a low-scoring game. The Spurs will be playing the 2nd of a back-to-back and their 5th game in 7 days, while the Jazz will be playing the 2nd of a back-to-back and their 5th game in 7 days as well.
Both teams prefer to play at slow paces as it is. The Spurs rank 29th in pace at 96.6 possessions per game, while the Jazz are 27th at 97.1 possessions per game. These are two of the better defensive teams in the NBA, too, with the Spurs ranking 4th and the Jazz 10th in defensive efficiency.
The Jazz and Spurs have combined for 198 or fewer points in five of their last six meetings. They have been held to less than 200 combined points in nine of their last 11 meetings as well. So this has typically been a low-scoring series, and given the situation tonight, it should continue to be.
San Antonio is 9-1 UNDER in road games off a win this season. The Spurs are 7-0 UNDER In road games when playing against a team with a losing record this season. The UNDER is 9-1 in Spurs last 10 road games overall. The UNDER is 8-3 in Jazz last 11 games when playing on 0 days’ rest. The UNDER is 4-0 in Spurs last four games when playing on 0 days’ rest. The UNDER is 9-3 in the last 12 meetings in Utah. Bet the UNDER in this game Thursday.

NCAA-F | Temple vs Florida International
                                Play on: OVER 57½ -110

Take Over the Total in the game between the Temple Owls and the Florida International. FIU (8-4) looks to build off their 63-45 victory over UMass in their last regular season game where they generated 674 yards of offense while allowing 548 yards to the Minutemen. The Golden Panthers have then played 4 of their last 5 games Over the Total after gaining at least 450 yards in their last game. FIU has also played 4 straight games Over the Total after allowing at least 450 yards in their last game. Temple (6-6) comes off a 43-22 win at Tulsa in their last regular season game — and they have then played 4 of their last 5 games Over the Total after scoring at least 40 points in their last contest. The Owls have also played 5 of their last 7 games against teams outside the American Athletic Conference. Take the Over. Best of luck — Frank.
