      Preview: Kings at Flames

The Los Angeles Kings attempt to conclude their trek through Western Canada with a perfect record when they visit the Calgary Flames on Thursday. Los Angeles began the trip Saturday with a 4-3 triumph in Vancouver and followed with a 5-0 victory at Edmonton three nights later.

Dustin Brown scored twice and Jonathan Quick made 32 saves en route to his third shutout of the season and first since Oct. 26 at Montreal as the Kings broke open a tight game with four goals in the third period. Calgary kicked off its three-game homestand Sunday with a 4-3 overtime victory over Chicago in which it squandered a three-goal lead before captain Mark Giordano scored 52 seconds into the extra session. Matthew Tkachuk registered his third two-goal performance of the season to become the fourth member of the team to reach double digits as the Flames halted their three-game slide. The 20-year-old left wing is three tallies away from matching his total as a rookie last campaign.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, FS West (Los Angeles), Sportsnet West (Calgary)

ABOUT THE KINGS (24-11-5): Brown's two-goal performance on Tuesday was his second of the season, with the first coming on Oct. 11 against Calgary. The 33-year-old has recorded 15 tallies this campaign, one more than his total from last season and his highest amount since he netted 15 in 2013-14. Marian Gaborik is riding a three-game point streak after notching two goals and three assists in that span.

ABOUT THE FLAMES (19-16-4): Sean Monahan netted his team-leading 18th tally on Sunday as he closes in on his fifth straight 20-goal season since joining the NHL. The 23-year-old former first-round pick had gone nine consecutive games without a goal after scoring twice on Dec. 7 at Montreal. Left wing Andrew Mangiapane, a sixth-round pick in the 2015 draft, registered two shots in 7 minutes, 26 seconds of ice time while making his NHL debut on Sunday.

      OVERTIME

      1. Flames D TJ Brodie notched an assist against Chicago, leaving him one point shy of 200 for his career.

      2. Los Angeles D Drew Doughty failed to extend his goal-scoring streak to three games on Tuesday, leaving him one shy of 100 for his career.

      3. Calgary RW Michael Frolik is out indefinitely after being place on injured reserve Sunday with a fractured jaw.

      PREDICTION: Flames 3, Kings 2

          Preview: Ducks at Oilers

          Jan 4, 2018

The Edmonton Oilers continue to be a puzzling group -- just when it seems they are putting it together, they can't figure it out as they host the surging Anaheim Ducks on Thursday. Edmonton lost 5-0 to Los Angeles on Tuesday - its second straight 5-0 setback at home - and is 0-4-0 since Christmas after allowing three power-play goals during a five-minute major, dropping its home penalty-killing percentage to an all-time NHL low 55.6.

"We just completely erased a four-game win streak we had just before the Christmas break,'' Edmonton's Milan Lucic told reporters after Tuesday's loss left the Oilers eight points out of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. "There's no reason why we shouldn't have picked where we left off. Forty-two games left, running out of time. Can't keep coming up with the same excuses night in, night out." Edmonton gets its first chance this season to exact a bit of revenge from Anaheim, which erased 2-0 and 3-2 series deficits to eliminate the Oilers in seven games in the 2017 Western Conference semifinals. The Ducks have won three straight and five of their last six games following Tuesday's 5-0 victory at Vancouver, and find themselves in playoff position as they continue to mesh after a rash of injuries forced them to piece together a lineup on a nightly basis for a majority of the season. The newly formed line of captain Ryan Getzlaf with wings Rickard Rakell and Antoine Vermette has exploded for six goals and seven assists in the last two games for Anaheim.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, FS Prime Ticket (Anaheim), Sportsnet Oilers (Edmonton)

ABOUT THE DUCKS (19-14-8): Rakell has scored in six straight games and leads the club with 15 goals and 31 points while Vermette (eight goals, 16 points this season) has scored in back-to-back games for the first time since Dec. 9-11, 2016. Getzlaf, who is two assists shy of 600 for his career, has two goals and 14 assists in 11 games since returning from a facial fracture. John Gibson (13-12-4, 2.70 goals-against average, .922 save percentage) is expected back in goal, trying for his third straight victory and third in four games after backup Ryan Miller shut out his former team Tuesday.

ABOUT THE OILERS (17-20-3): Reigning Hart Trophy winner Connor McDavid (team-high 45 points) has gone three straight games without a point for the first time in his career. Cam Talbot (14-13-2, 3.08, .903) continues to struggle as he's allowed 18 goals during the losing streak after a breakout 2016-17 season in which he was 42-22-8, 2.39, .919. Edmonton will be without Patrick Maroon, who was suspended two games Wednesday after his shoulder hit to the head of Kings defenseman Drew Doughty on Tuesday resulted in a five-minute major and game misconduct.

          OVERTIME

          1. Anaheim RW Ondrej Kase (nine goals in 27 games) missed Tuesday's game with the flu.

          2. The Oilers, who are fifth in the league in road penalty killing at 85.1 percent, are tied for the fifth-most goals allowed in the league at 3.25 after finishing with the eighth-fewest at 2.52 last season.

          3. The Ducks have won 20 of their last 27 games in Edmonton.

          PREDICTION: Oilers 3, Ducks 2

              Preview: Predators at Coyotes

The Nashville Predators hope to avoid a third consecutive road loss as they continue their three-game trip Thursday against the Arizona Coyotes. Nashville came up empty in Vegas on Tuesday, falling 3-0 to the expansion Golden Knights for its third defeat in four road contests (1-2-1) following a four-game winning streak away from home.

The Predators are 1-1-0 since losing Filip Forsberg, who leads the team with 15 goals and 34 points but is on injured reserve with a hand injury that could force him to miss up to six weeks. Arizona is coming off its second straight loss, a 5-2 setback at Anaheim on Sunday in which rookie Clayton Keller extended his point streak to eight games with his team-leading 14th goal. The 19-year-old center, who also tops the Coyotes with 32 points, has collected three tallies and six assists during his run. Arizona is a league-worst 4-13-1 at home, where it has lost two in a row and five of six.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, FS Tennessee (Nashville), FS Arizona

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (23-11-5): Ryan Ellis made his season debut on Tuesday, recording two shots, two blocks and one hit in 18 minutes, 27 seconds of ice time. The 27-year-old defenseman, who hadn't played since Game 6 of the 2017 Stanley Cup Final against Pittsburgh on June 11, missed Nashville's first 38 games while recovering from offseason knee surgery. Defenseman P.K. Subban, who is second on the team in scoring (29 points), recorded a goal and an assist in back-to-back games before Tuesday's shutout loss.

ABOUT THE COYOTES (9-27-5): Defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson, who has been sidelined with an upper-body injury, is close to returning to the lineup for the first time since Nov. 28. "He's getting closer," coach Rick Tocchet told the team's website. "He's practiced with us the last couple days, and that's helped. We just want to make sure that he's definitely ready." Blue-liner Kyle Capobianco, who made his NHL debut on Dec. 7, was recalled from Tucson of the American Hockey League.

              OVERTIME

              1. The Coyotes have assigned D Andrew Campbell to Tucson.

              2. Nashville C Kyle Turris is three assists shy of 200 for his career.

              3. Arizona F Zac Rinaldo will serve the fourth contest of the six-game suspension he received for sucker-punching Colorado's Samuel Girard.

              PREDICTION: Predators 4, Coyotes 1

                          Preview: Ohio State at Iowa

Ohio State looks to stay unbeaten in the Big Ten when it resumes conference play on the road against Iowa on Thursday. The Buckeyes notched impressive victories against Wisconsin 83-58 and Michigan 71-62 in early December before winning four of their next five games, including a 72-59 triumph against Miami (Ohio) on Saturday, to finish the non-conference portion of their schedule and hope to stay hot by beating the Hawkeyes on the road for the first time since Feb. 4, 2014.

"I look back at our non-conference as we complete it and I feel good about it," Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann told reporters. "It wasn't an easy non-conference and that's a good thing and to be 9-4 our guys feel good about it." Iowa is still searching for its first Big Ten win of the season following a 75-68 home loss to Michigan on Tuesday. The Hawkeyes fell to Penn State 77-73 and Indiana 77-64 before coming up short against the Wolverines, and hope to avoid their first 0-4 start in conference play since 2010-11 by downing the Buckeyes for the fourth time in five meetings. "Learn from it and flush this one is the most important thing," Iowa forward Tyler Cook told reporters. "As a unit we need to make sure we're picking each other up and to a man we need to do better."

                              Preview: Houston at Wichita State

Ninth-ranked Wichita State will put its 25-game home winning streak on the line when it hosts Houston on Thursday in the first meeting of the new American Athletic Conference rivals since 2005. The Shockers have won 65 of their last 66 home games.

It’s a matchup of the league’s top two shooting teams as Wichita State leads the AAC with a 48.3 percent clip, narrowly edging Houston’s 48.2 percent mark. The Shockers won their American debut 72-62 at Connecticut on Saturday, and have captured three straight and seven of their last eight overall contests. The Cougars held on for a 76-73 victory over visiting Temple on Saturday despite receiving just eight points from Rob Gray, the conference’s leading scorer at 19 per game. Houston has won four straight games and 11 of its last 12.

ABOUT HOUSTON (12-2, 2-0 American): The Cougars have a dangerous backcourt led by Gray, who had his streak of 43 consecutive games with a double-digit point total snapped against the Owls. Backcourt mate Corey Davis Jr. (11.1 points) and reserve guard Armoni Brooks (9.9) both can light it up from 3-point range. Houston doesn’t have a wealth of size in the frontcourt, but 6-6 forward Devin Davis (11.9 points, 6.8 rebounds) has been effective.

ABOUT WICHITA STATE (11-2, 1-0): The Shockers make a league-best 9.5 3-pointers per game, well ahead of last season’s school-record pace of 8.8. Leading scorer Landry Shamet (17 points, 4.7 assists) leads the way, hitting 52.9 percent from long range with a team-high 36 3-pointers, and Conner Frankamp (11.5 points) also likes to shoot from beyond the arc. The Shockers also get it done in the paint, though, as they rank fourth nationally in rebounding margin - with Darral Willis Jr. (12.4 points, 7.2 rebounds) and Rashard Kelly (5.9, 8.2) leading the way.
