A loss to the Penguins by 3 goals began this streak but then the Blues had 3 straight one goal losses. The concern now for St Louis is that the last 3 losses have come by a combined score of 16 to 3. You read that right, the Blues are now getting demolished nightly and their facing an old rival that certainly is not going to show them any mercy tonight. The Red Wings enter this game off of back to back wins and they've also won 3 of their last 4 road games. In other words, they're playing much better hockey than a Blues hockey club that is a very large favorite here. Home ice hasn't mattered in recent meetings in this series as the road team has won 5 straight match-ups! Of course much has been made of the Mustangs injuries and so it is understandable that the markets may react in such a way here. However, I am here to tell you the odds makers certainly aren't lacking in knowledge and they opened this one up with the Cougars at -4.5 for a reason. We're now seeing this line all the way up to a 6.5 and that is offering fantastic line value on a hungry home dog. The Mustangs have shot the ball well in each of their past two games and blew out East Carolina and then battle very hard against Wichita State before falling short by 6 points. SMU is not going to quit here. The Mustangs have been knocking down their outside shots and the Cougars are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 road games. After Houston completely annihilated East Carolina by a 51 point margin Sunday, the value in fading the Cougars is available here in a big way! It's an early tip today in Big Ten action, but my free play is on the Iowa Hawkeyes, on the moneyline against the Illinois Fighting Illini. Yeah, I know you'd probably rather lay points than juice, but baseball is right around the corner, so get used to it.
The Hawkeyes were able to snag a fraction of postseason momentum with a win over Northwestern in the season-finale. So even though they lost six of their last seven overall, I think they're a better overall team than Illinois.
The Fighting Illini arrives at Madison Square Garden having lost six of eight down the stretch, and make not they lost an overtime game against Iowa earlier in the season. Illinois' paltry defense will be tested against an Iowa offense that scores almost 80 points per game, and could produce 90 tonight.
Lay the moneyline here, as Iowa wins the 5:30 pm eastern tip.
