My 1* Free Play is on the Detroit Pistons (7:00 EST).
Detroit broke a three-game skid with a 110-87 victory over Milwaukee on Wednesday and it’ll now look to take advantage of an Orlando team which is in a “free fall,” having now lost seven in a row after a 117-104 setback at home to the Raptors in its most recent action.
Detroit averages 103.2 PPG and it concedes 103.8. Blake Griffin averages 21.5 points, 7.6 boards and 5.4 assists per night, while Andre Drummond adds 15.1 points, 15.8 boards and 1.61 steals per game. It was Stanley Johnson though which led all Detroit scorers in the team’s latest victory with 19 points.
Orlando averages 105.6 PPG and it concedes 110.2 Nikola Vucevic recently returned from injury and he averages 17.2 points and nine boards per game. Evan Fournier had 17 points in a losing cause to Toronto.
Both teams have been terrible against the spread, but Detroit got back on track in its last outing and I think it can take advantage of this Orlando team that’s already sizing up its lottery chances in the off-season. Consider a second look at the hungry visiting side in this one.

Free College Basketball Prediction from Doc’s Sports: Take Samford over Chattanooga (7 p.m., Friday, March 2) We nailed our free pick last week with Utah coming through with ease over UCLA. I think this is another ripe spot from the Southern Conference Tournament. Samford has been a massive disappointment this year. This team won 20 games last season, made the SoCon semifinals, and actually won a postseason tournament game in the CIT last year. They have been a catastrophe this year, going 10-21 and closing the year on a 3-11 league run. However, I think they will be able to squeeze out at least one win in this year's tournament. This team has a wealth of experience, and they are actually one of the better scoring teams in the Southern. They just don't play any defense. But then again, Chattanooga doesn't really do anything right. They aren't any better defensively and they are much worse on the offensive end. Also, they may be without point guard Rodney Chatman, who has missed the last three games. If that is the case, then I think this team has no chance. I think Samford will find a way to win this one.

The 7th seed Santa Clara Broncos (8-10, 11-19) face the 10th seeded Pepperdine Waves (2-16, 5-25) at the Orleans Arena.
Santa Clara is one of the worst defensive teams in the country (347th, FG% defense) but part of that is because they play a heavy transition game that forces them to defend more opponent possessions.
Both of the earlier meeting between these teams would have fallen under today's total and there's no reason to go against that trend today. I would bet this game now because the number has fallen.

Canisius is 11-1 ATS after two straight games giving up 9 or less offensive rebounds this season. Quinnipiac is 2-11 ATS against good teams that outscore their opponents by 4 or more points per game after 15 or more games since 1997. Take Canisius.

It certainly is no "gift" from the odds makers that the Islanders are such a small favorite on home ice. This one comes down to goaltending. The Isles have had netminding issues all season and they're still without Thomas Greiss. That means Jaroslav Halak is expected to get the call here. Halak is 0-4 in his last 4 starts and the Islanders have lost those games by a combined score of 14-8! The Canadiens are currently without Carey Price but Antti Niemi has filled in very nicely and has a .924 save percentage in his last 4 starts. He has allowed only 2 goals per start and Montreal has won 2 of these games. The most recent was against the Isles north of the border Wednesday so many will be looking for the bounce back from the Islanders on home ice here. Utah went into the All Star Break on a season high ten game winning streak. They’ve come out of the break with some real clunkers, blown off the floor in a 19 point home loss to the Blazers, unable to extend their margin against the hapless Mavericks and struggling throughout an 11 point home loss to the Rockets.
Big man Derrick Favors, following the latest loss: “I definitely think there’s some rust from the all-star break. But it’s easy to fix. We have to improve on communication, on both ends of the floor. We have to improve on little things. But all of our issues, they are easy to fix.”
I concur wholeheartedly. Utah’s defense ranks #2 in the NBA since the All Star Break, allowing just 96.5 PP/100. But their offense has struggled mightily, just 90.7 PP/100; dead last in the NBA during that span. A big problem has been their inability to handle the basketball, dead last in the NBA in turnover percentage since the Break.
First, I don’t expect this to be a long term problem for the Jazz. Head coach Quin Synder, following the loss to Houston: “Ultimately in some of these situations, guys just really have to concentrate while they’re on the floor. The kind of drills you do not to turn the ball over are very mundane. We’ll do them, but more than anything, it’s just a mindset that we have to be tougher.”
Second, the Jazz are facing the ideal elixir for a struggling offense – playing Minnesota on the second night of back-2-backs. The T-wolves have not developed defensively as anticipated in the Tom Thibodeau era; and it’s not likely to get better with Jimmy Butler sitting on the sidelines in street clothes. Coming off another ugly second half at Portland last night (allowing 64 points after allowing only 44 in the first half), it’s hard for this bettor to picture Minnesota stepping up defensively tonight.
Lastly, from a spot perspective, this one really stands out for the Jazz. They know they haven’t played well since the break, and they’ve been off since Monday at home, going through a heavy practice routine. Expect that extra prep time to pay dividends for Jazz supporters tonight! Take the Jazz

At home, the Sooners have much more value than they do in other spots.
Oklahoma has won 20 of their last 25 overall at home and in that span are a solid 15-10 ATS. The Sooners have been able to play with much more confidence in front of the home crowd as they will attack much more and hit their groove offensively earlier in games.
On the other side of things, ISU has yet to win on the road this year and is 1-7 ATS in that span.
Some trends to note. Cyclones are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 Friday games. Cyclones are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600.

I'm taking the points with Iowa State on Friday night. We went against Oklahoma last time out and cashed an easy one with Baylor. It's senior night in Norman, but man has this team hit the skids. OU is in danger of not making the Big Dance after starting the season 14-2. We noticed a while back that a few Sooner players were standing around watching Trae Young operate. It finally caught up with them. And while we have nothing but respect for Lon Kruger and his coaching accomplishments, some made solid arguments, questioning if Kruger lost this team. Yes, Iowa State is in a rebuilding year and yes, the Sooners have revenge on their minds after losing 88-80 in Ames on February 10. But while OU may gain a measure of revenge, the price is awfully expensive. The Sooners have cashed just three of their last 16 games and they're on a 1-8 ATS slide in conference play. Iowa State is no great shakes right now, but they don't have to win and they're getting a fair amount of points. We're recommending a play on Iowa State plus the points on Friday night. Thanks & GL!
