#915/916 ‘UNDER 8.5’ Detroit Tigers (Boyd) at Cleveland Indians (Tomlin) 5:10 PM CT
Detroit and Cleveland played nine innings last night with just two runs and six hits combined. Corey Kluber was on the mound for eight innings and the two-time Cy Young winner lived up to his billing with 13 strikeouts. Detroit never had a runner in scoring position in the game and cool conditions are again in the forecast and afternoon showers could lower the humidity by game time. Today’s pitchers are less heralded but Josh Tomlin and Matt Boyd both had better results than their conventional numbers suggest last season. Both were in the AL’s top five for difference between FIP and ERA as both likely deserved a stronger 2017 season. This is a big start for Josh Tomlin who has a shaky hold on a rotation spot for the Indians and was blasted in his 2018 debut in Anaheim, allowing eight runs and four home runs in just three innings. Tomlin had decent numbers in two starts vs. Detroit last season and his numbers in 2015 and 2016 were excellent before being saddled with a .329 BABIP last season. He isn’t a huge strikeout producer but this is a Tigers lineup scoring just 4.2 runs per game and conditions that should keep most fly balls in the park. Matt Boyd went just 6-11 last season following modest success sin 2016 for Detroit but his ERA was nearly a run higher than his FIP. He was also hit with a .330 BABIP last season for an elevated mark well above his career average and he is a strong candidate for a season of improvement this season getting a chance to stay in the rotation all season. He took a loss in his 2018 debut but it was a quality start with just one run and four hits allowed. Only three teams in baseball have scored fewer runs than the Indians at this point in the season and Cleveland has played 10 games already, scoring just 2.9 runs per game. Indians games have averaged just 6.1 runs per game as Cleveland still leads the AL Central with its elite pitching and the bullpen is in great shape after Kluber’s long start. Expect more low numbers in very cold mid-April conditions south of Lake Erie again.
