Philadelphia Phillies vs. Miami Marlins Preview and Predictions 04-30-2018

    29th April 2018 by Gracenote
jake arrieta didn't put his best foot forward in his first start of the 2018 season, exiting after four innings in a no-decision versus the miami marlins. three starts and as many wins later, the 2015 national league cy young award recipient aims for a better showing on monday as the philadelphia phillies (16-11) open a three-game series against the host marlins (9-18).

aaron altherr scored his team's lone run and collected three of his club's five hits in sunday's 10-1 rout by atlanta as the phillies have dropped four of six overall after losing two of three to the braves for the third time this season. maikel franco joined altherr in belting a grand slam to highlight a 20-1 romp over miami on april 7, with the former going 6-for-12 with two homers, 10 rbis and four runs scored as philadelphia won two of three in that series. miguel rojas homered in the finale of that set and went deep for the second time in four outings as the marlins posted their fourth win in five games with sunday's 3-0 triumph over colorado. "early in the season, we were finding a way to lose," manager don mattingly told reporters. "to put a couple of series in a row together, that's the only way we're going to ever get marching down the road toward respectability."
tv: 7:10 p.m. et, nbcs philadelphia, fs florida (miami)
pitching matchup: phillies rh jake arrieta (3-0, 1.82 era) vs. marlins rh dan straily (2017: 10-9, 4.26)

signed to a three-year, $75 million deal, arrieta allowed three runs on as many hits in four innings of a no-decision against miami on april 8. the 32-year-old has flipped the switch over his last three outings, permitting three earned runs while scattering 12 hits and striking out 13 in 20 2/3 innings. j.t. realmuto (3-for-8) and justin bour (2-for-6) have gotten their licks in against arrieta, but the right-hander has limited the rest of current roster to going 3-for-36 with eight strikeouts.
straily is expected to come off the disabled list and make his first start of 2018 after being sidelined with a right forearm inflammation. the 29-year-old struck out 12 over 13 innings during three rehab starts and looks to provide a workhorse presence for miami after logging a team-high 181 2/3 innings last season. "you always feel good with dan. we've taken our time with him to make sure he's fully ready," mattingly said of straily, who sports a 4-2 career mark versus philadelphia despite a less-than-desirable 5.35 era and 1.78 whip while allowing the club to bat .338 against him.
    walk-offs
    1. philadelphia cf odubel herrera, who has reached base in a career-best 29 consecutive games, went 7-for-12 with five runs scored in the first series versus miami.

    2. marlins of cameron maybin is just 6-for-43 with 15 strikeouts since facing the phillies earlier this month.

    3. philadelphia 2b cesar hernandez has reached base 12 times in his last six games overall and eight times versus miami this season.

    prediction: phillies 3, marlins 1

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Detroit Tigers Preview and Predictions 04-30-2018

      29th April 2018 by Gracenote
the tampa bay rays' eight-game winning streak might be over, but their surge over the last 1 1/2 weeks has allowed them to remove the stench of their 4-13 start. the rays hope to continue what has been a successful road trip to this point when they complete the last leg of an eight-game trek with the first of three contests versus the detroit tigers on monday.

"we needed it every bit (of the streak) and then some. a lot of good things kind of came about. we saw our offense take shape a little bit and get hot. pitchers got into that better rhythm, and defensively kind of as advertised," tampa bay manager kevin cash told reporters after sunday's 4-3 loss in boston. the rays (12-14) didn't function at quite the same level offensively as they had become accustomed, however, after scoring at least eight runs in six of their previous seven games. the tigers have dropped four of their last five while scoring 15 runs - nine coming in their lone win - since a 13-10 victory over pittsburgh on wednesday. detroit is coming off a 5-3 defeat at baltimore and may not have 11-time all-star first baseman miguel cabrera available for the opener after he left the game in the fifth inning during sunday's loss.
tv: 7:10 p.m. et, fs sun (tampa bay), fs detroit
pitching matchup: rays rh jake faria (1-1, 6.33 era) vs. tigers rh jordan zimmermann (1-0, 7.91)

faria struggled for the second time in as many road starts wednesday in baltimore but came away with a no-decision despite yielding four runs on four hits and three walks in 4 1/3 frames. the outing came after two home turns in which the 24-year-old held philadelphia and texas to one run apiece over a combined 11 1/3 innings. opponents are hitting .346 on the road against faria, who beat the tigers in his only start against them last june, allowing one run and striking out nine over seven innings.
zimmermann remained without a quality start in five tries following wednesday's no-decision at pittsburgh, permitting six runs (three earned) - including two homers - on six hits while throwing 66 pitches across three innings. the two-time all-star has nearly doubled his strikeouts per nine innings from last season (10.24 in 2018, 5.79 in 2017) but is allowing opponents to bat .333. adeiny hechavarria is 7-for-33 against zimmermann, who is 1-1 with a 4.55 era in five career starts versus tampa bay.
      walk-offs

      1. rays of denard span is batting .333 with three doubles, three homers and 13 rbis over his last 10 games.

      2. cabrera was diagnosed with a left biceps spasm but reported feeling much better after receiving treatment. he is expected to be re-evaluated on monday.
      3. tampa bay 1b c.j. cron has hit safely in 15 of his last 16 games.

      prediction: rays 6, tigers 5

Kansas City Royals vs. Boston Red Sox Preview and Predictions 04-30-2018

        29th April 2018 by Gracenote
the kansas city royals finally managed to put together a winning streak for the first time this season over the weekend, but their next challenge figures to be a bit more difficult. two teams on the opposite end of the spectrum get together for the first time in 2018 when the boston red sox host the opener of a three-game set monday against the royals.

boston has cooled off since its 17-2 start with losses in five of its eight contests, but its 20-7 record is still the best in the majors after the club avoided its first sweep of the season with a 4-3 home win over tampa bay on sunday. j.d. martinez singled in all four of his at-bats and drove in a pair runs, while sandy leon broke open a tie game in the eighth inning with a run-scoring single of his own. american league-worst kansas city (7-20) downed the chicago white sox in back-to-back games on saturday and sunday but still fell to 0-7-2 in series play because it was outscored 21-7 in the first three contests of the five-game set. royals first baseman cheslor cuthbert ended a couple of dubious droughts in sunday's 5-4 victory with his two-homer, four-rbi game, going deep for the first time since aug. 20 while also driving in his first run since march 31.
tv: 7:10 p.m. et, fs kansas city, nesn (boston)
pitching matchup: royals rh jason hammel (0-2, 3.38 era) vs. red sox lh eduardo rodriguez (3-0, 3.63)

hammel's winless streak reached nine starts dating back to last season following a loss to milwaukee on wednesday after he permitted four runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks across 6 2/3 innings. the south carolina native hasn't received much help from the al's worst offense, however, as kansas city has scored two runs or fewer in four of his five starts. hanley ramirez is 9-for-19 with a homer against hammel, who went 2-0 with a 3.21 era in three starts versus the red sox last season.
rodriguez has logged at least 100 pitches while producing three straight quality starts and has won each of them, including wednesday in toronto when he allowed three runs on six hits and a walk in 6 2/3 frames. the 25-year-old venezuelan has been easier to hit at fenway park (.270 at home versus .188 on the road) but made up for it a bit by amassing 15 strikeouts in 9 2/3 innings in those two turns. rodriguez is 1-1 with a 4.98 era in four career starts against the royals.
        walk-offs

        1. the red sox-royals all-time series is tied at 235-235.

        2. kansas city ss alcides escobar is day-to-day with a left hand contusion after being hit by a pitch sunday.
        3. boston of mookie betts did not play sunday due to a tight right hamstring, but manager alex cora called the two-time all-star "day-to-day" in a postgame interview.

prediction: red sox 7, royals 3

Milwaukee Brewers vs. Cincinnati Reds Preview and Predictions 04-30-2018

          29th April 2018 by Gracenote
after beginning a nine-game road trip with a pair of victories in kansas city that extended their overall winning streak to eight, the milwaukee brewers have seen their bats go into a deep freeze. milwaukee looks to heat up offensively after totaling two runs during a four-game sweep in chicago when it visits the cincinnati reds on monday for the opener of their three-game series.

the brewers were shut out in three of their four losses to the cubs, including sunday's 2-0 setback in which they produced just a pair of singles. milwaukee registered a total of 14 hits in the four-game set and two in each of the final two contests, marking the first time since 1974 it has managed two or fewer in back-to-back games. cincinnati hasn't won many contests this season, but it has poured on the offense in its last six triumphs. the reds have scored at least seven runs in each of those victories, including sunday's 8-2 romp at minnesota in which jose peraza went 3-for-5 with an rbi during a 14-hit attack.
tv: 7:10 p.m. et, fs wisconsin (milwaukee), fs ohio (cincinnati)
pitching matchup: brewers rh jhoulys chacin (2-1, 3.99 era) vs. reds lh brandon finnegan (0-2, 8.03)

chacin appears to have overcome his early struggles as he has allowed three runs over 15 2/3 innings while going 2-0 in his last three starts. the 30-year-old venezuelan is coming off a victory at kansas city on wednesday in which he yielded two runs and four hits over 5 2/3 frames. chacin owns a 2-3 record with one complete game and a 3.64 era in six starts and two relief appearances against cincinnati.
finnegan is seeking his first win of 2018 as he makes his fourth start after beginning the season on the disabled list due to a biceps injury. the 25-year-old texan settled for a no-decision against atlanta on wednesday after giving up three runs - two earned - and seven hits in five innings. finnegan has made five starts and one relief appearance against milwaukee in his career, going 2-1 with a 3.86 era.

          walk-offs

          1. the brewers hosted a three-game set against the reds earlier this month, losing the opener decisively before posting back-to-back 2-0 victories.
          2. cincinnati of jesse winker and 1b joey votto have reached safely in 16 and 14 consecutive games, respectively.

          3. milwaukee lhp brent suter has been moved to the bullpen to make room in the rotation for lhp wade miley (groin), who will make his debut with the team when he starts the series finale on wednesday.

          prediction: brewers 5, reds 3

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Minnesota Twins Preview and Predictions 04-30-2018

            30th April 2018 by Gracenote
the toronto blue jays have wobbled a bit after a surprisingly strong start and hope to string together a pair of wins for the first time in almost two weeks when they visit the slumping minnesota twins on monday for the opener of their three-game series. the blue jays dropped six of seven before launching three homers in a 7-2 victory over texas on sunday to salvage the finale of their three-game home set.

kevin pillar hit one of the blasts - his third in two contests - and is 6-for-13 with five rbis during his four-game hitting streak for toronto, which also visits cleveland and tampa bay on its eight-game road trip. aaron sanchez will try to even his record when he takes the mound for the blue jays while lance lynn starts for the twins, who have dropped nine of 10 after beginning the season 8-5. minnesota could not take advantage of major league-worst cincinnati this weekend, losing two of three - including an 8-2 setback on sunday. the twins were without slugger miguel sano (five homers, 14 rbis) in the last two contests due to a sore left hamstring, but he could return to the lineup in the series against toronto.
tv: 8:10 p.m. et, sportsnet one (toronto), fs north (minnesota)
pitching matchup: blue jays rh aaron sanchez (1-2, 3.69 era) vs. twins rh lance lynn (0-2, 7.71)

sanchez has recorded four straight quality starts but has posted just one victory in that stretch after a no-decision last time out against boston in which he struck out eight and yielded two runs over six innings. the 25-year-old has allowed nine runs on 19 hits over 26 frames in his last four turns, throwing between 96 and 99 pitches in each. eddie rosario is 2-for-2 and jason castro has homered versus sanchez, who is 1-0 with a 2.57 era in three career games (two starts) against minnesota.
lynn is looking for his first victory with the twins after permitting 11 runs on 14 hits and eight walks over 9 2/3 innings in his last two starts. the 30-year-old ole miss product did not factor in the decision against houston on april 9, when he worked five scoreless innings - the only outing in which he has yielded fewer than five runs. russell martin (7-for-18, one homer) and kendrys morales (3-for-3, two homers) have had success against lynn, who is 0-2 with a 2.25 era in two career appearances (one start) versus toronto.
            walk-offs

            1. minnesota inf eduardo escobar is 10-for-23 with five doubles and four rbis during his six-game hitting streak.

            2. toronto optioned slumping 2b devon travis to triple-a buffalo on sunday and recalled rhp carlos ramirez from the bisons.
            3. the twins won four of the seven overall meetings last year but split four contests in minnesota.

prediction: blue jays 5, twins 2

New York Yankees vs. Houston Astros Preview and Predictions 04-30-2018

              30th April 2018 by Gracenote
the runaway train known as the new york yankees attempt to push their winning streak to double digits when they visit the houston astros on monday for the opener of their four-game series in a rematch of the 2017 american league championship series. new york completed a three-game road sweep with sunday's 2-1 triumph over the los angeles angels, which was its ninth consecutive victory.

gary sanchez's two-run homer in the fourth inning held up as cc sabathia and two relievers limited the angels to one run and six hits as the yankees remained unbeaten since dropping an 8-5 decision to toronto on april 20. houston appears to have recovered from a stretch during which it lost three of four as it outscored oakland 19-4 in a pair of victories. george springer belted a two-run homer while reigning al mvp jose altuve singled and drove in two runs in sunday's 8-4 triumph as the astros improved to 3-3 on their 10-game homestand. altuve, who has won three batting titles in the last four years, has been held without a hit in only four of 29 games this season.
tv: 8:10 p.m. et, yes (new york), at&t sportsnet-southwest (houston)
pitching matchup: yankees rh sonny gray (1-1, 7.71 era) vs. astros rh charlie morton (3-0, 1.86)

gray's struggles continued wednesday as he yielded three runs on six hits and five walks while throwing 104 pitches in 4 2/3 innings of a no-decision against minnesota. it was the second-longest outing of the season for the 28-year-old native of tennessee, who surrendered 11 runs over 6 1/3 frames in his previous two outings. gray, who limited houston to two runs and one hit over five innings in game 4 of the alcs last year, is 4-3 with one complete game and a 3.09 era in nine career regular-season starts versus the astros.
morton was brilliant in his first four starts of the season but had trouble against the los angeles angels on tuesday, when he escaped with a no-decision after giving up four runs on five hits and five walks in four innings. the 34-year-old from new jersey recorded only two strikeouts in that outing after registering 33 over 25 frames in his first four turns. morton split his two career regular-season starts against new york and did the same in last year's postseason matchup, yielding seven runs over 3 2/3 frames in a game 3 loss before tossing five scoreless innings en route to victory in game 7.
              walk-offs

              1. sanchez, whose last eight hits have gone for extra bases, has scored at least one run in each of his last eight contests.

              2. houston ss carlos correa went 0-for-4 on sunday, ending his 12-game hitting streak.
              3. new york has outscored its opponents 64-18 during its winning streak.

              prediction: astros 7, yankees 3

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Arizona Diamondbacks Preview and Predictions 04-30-2018

                30th April 2018 by Gracenote
los angeles dodgers outfielder yasiel puig's injury has created an opportunity for top prospect alex verdugo, who figures to be in the starting lineup for most of the team's games over the next 10 days. verdugo is hoping to provide a spark for the sluggish dodgers, who are three games under .500 as they begin a four-game series against the host arizona diamondbacks on monday.

puig landed on the 10-day disabled list before sunday's 4-2 loss to san francisco due to a left hip pointer and bruised left foot, but matt kemp (left quadriceps) and enrique hernandez (flu symptoms) returned to the starting lineup. leadoff hitter chris taylor is batting .233 for the dodgers, who dropped three of four against the giants as they recorded three runs and 10 hits over the final 17 innings of the series. arizona had its three-game winning streak snapped with sunday's 3-1 loss to washington and could be without robbie ray for an extended period after he exited in the second inning with a strained oblique muscle. the diamondbacks own the national league's best record at 19-8 but already had concerns about the rotation after taijuan walker underwent season-ending tommy john surgery last week.
tv: 9:40 p.m. et, sportsnet la (los angeles), fs arizona
pitching matchup: dodgers rh ross stripling (0-0, 0.63 era) vs. diamondbacks rh zack greinke (2-2, 4.80)

stripling is making a spot start in place of rich hill, whose expected return from the disabled list has been delayed due to an infection in his left middle finger. the 28-year-old stripling has pitched exclusively in relief this season, registering 16 strikeouts without serving up a home runs over 14 1/3 innings in 10 appearances. david peralta is 5-for-12 with four doubles against stripling, who is 1-2 with a 3.48 era in 15 career games (two starts) against arizona
greinke is looking to bounce back from a rough outing against philadelphia on wednesday, when he allowed five runs and nine hits in six innings. the four-time all-star owns a 32-to-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio but has yielded a home run in each of his five starts. cody bellinger is 5-for-12 with two blasts against greinke, who is 5-4 with a 3.91 era in 12 career starts versus the dodgers - including a 1-2 record and 3.65 era in four turns last season.
                walk-offs

                1. arizona is 11-1 in its last 12 meetings with the dodgers, winning five of six already this season.

                2. bellinger was benched for a lack of hustle in the fifth inning of sunday's game but is expected to be in the lineup monday.
                3. diamondbacks 1b paul goldschmidt has reached base safely in 12 of his 27 plate appearances against the dodgers this season.

                prediction: diamondbacks 6, dodgers 2

San Diego Padres vs. San Francisco Giants Preview and Predictions 04-30-2018

                  30th April 2018 by Gracenote
hunter strickland quietly has emerged as a reliable closer for the san francisco giants, who begin a three-game series against the visiting san diego padres on monday. taking over for injured veteran mark melancon, the 29-year-old strickland has converted five consecutive save opportunities for the giants, who have won three straight series for the first time since may 2017.

the giants took three of four from the los angeles dodgers over the weekend but could be without joe panik for an extended period after the second baseman suffered a torn ligament in his left thumb on friday. kelby tomlinson and alen hanson are expected to step in for panik, who was hitting .267 with three home runs but could miss 6-8 weeks if surgery is required. san diego has dropped six of its last eight games and placed wil myers on the 10-day disabled list on sunday with a strained left oblique. the padres received another lackluster pitching performance from bryan mitchell in sunday's 14-2 loss to the new york mets, but eric hosmer went 3-for-5 and has reached safely in eight of his last nine games.
tv: 10:15 p.m. et, mlb network, fs san diego, nbcs bay area (san francisco)
pitching matchup: padres lh eric lauer (0-1, 18.00 era) vs. giants rh jeff samardzija (1-1, 6.23)

lauer had an inauspicious major-league debut against colorado on tuesday, allowing seven runs - six earned - in three innings of an 8-0 loss. Monday's NBA Playoffs Betting Preview and Odds: 76ers at Celtics

The third-seeded 76ers needed five games to get past Miami in the opening round and have been waiting for an opponent since finishing that series Tuesday night.

                          Philadelphia 76ers at Boston Celtics (+3, 208)

                          Series tied 0-0.

The Boston Celtics needed everything they had to survive a seven-game, first-round series with the Milwaukee Bucks. Their reward is an Eastern Conference semifinals matchup with one of the hottest teams in the league in the rested Philadelphia 76ers, who visit second-seeded Boston for Game 1 of a rivalry-fueled best-of-seven series Monday night.

"It's more than you can imagine, just a great feeling," Celtics big man Al Horford told reporters after the first-round series, during which the home team won every game. "Our fans really gave us that energy. This is why you work so hard in the regular season, to put yourself with home-court advantage." The third-seeded 76ers needed five games to get past Miami in the opening round and have been waiting for an opponent since finishing that series Tuesday night, affording more rest for the team that is far healthier coming into the series. "I can see in their faces that they are spirited, they are rested, for sure," Philadelphia coach Brett Brown told reporters Saturday. "But they're also antsy. They want to play." The Celtics won three of four meetings during the regular season, including a matchup in London on Jan. 11.

                          TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT

                          SERIES PRICE (PER PINNACLE):

LINE HISTORY: The Sixers opened as two-point road favorites for Game 1 and as of Sunday evening that number has been bet up to 3. 62 percent of consensus betting action is on the favorite 76ers. The total hit betting boards at 210 and has been dropped to 208.

                          INJURY REPORT:

Sixers - SG T. Luwawu-Cabarrot (Out Indefinitely, Knee).

Celtics - SG J. Brown (Doubful, Hamstring), PG K. Irving (Out For Season, Knee), PF D. Theis (Out For Season, Knee), SF G. Hayward (Out For Season, Ankle).

                          MATCHUP CHART:

ABOUT THE 76ERS (56-31 SU, 51-34-2 ATS, 43-43-1 O/U): While players may be antsy to play again, the prolonged rest cannot be a bad thing for star center Joel Embiid, who returned from an orbital fracture to play the final three games of the series with the Heat. He averaged 18.7 points and 10.3 rebounds in those three games and shot 8-of-14 from the floor in Game 5 after struggling a bit with his shot in the previous two contests. JJ Redick was Philadelphia's top scorer versus the Heat with 20 points per game while rookie Ben Simmons showed he is well-suited for the big stage, averaging 18.2 points, 10.6 rebounds, nine assists and 2.4 steals in the series.

ABOUT THE CELTICS (59-30 SU, 55-32-2 ATS, 48-40-1 O/U): The big question heading into Game 1 will be the status of shooting guard Jaylen Brown, who left the clincher against Milwaukee due to a hamstring injury and hopes to not miss any time. "I was told that if we got in a pinch that he could play," coach Brad Stevens told reporters after the win. "We decided that that was not going to happen. With hamstrings, let's see how he feels tomorrow." Brown averaged 17.9 points against the Bucks, just a shade behind Horford (18.1), who will take on the assignment of matching up with Embiid.

                          TRENDS:

                          * 76ers are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 road games.
                          * Celtics are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 home games.
                          * Under is 13-5 in 76ers' last 18 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
                          * Over is 7-1 in Celtics' last 8 home games.
                          * Road team is 8-3 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
