            May Pitchers Report

            May 1, 2018

The call to the post in the month of May signals the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. For baseball purists, May is simply the 2nd full month of the season as we head toward the sweltering days of summer. And for die-hard baseball fans that enjoy handicapping America’s pastime, it also signals the arrival of our annual May Good Month/Bad Month pitchers report.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team-starts over the course of the last three seasons during the month of May. On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in May, winning 33% percent or less of their team-start efforts.

To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each May over the last three years. And for your convenience alongside each record we break down each pitcher’s greatest success or greatest failure rate either home (H) or away (A) within his good or bad month.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s May list.

            GOOD MONTH PITCHERS

            *Cueto, Johnny - 11-5 (5-1 H)

Johnny Cueto has been pitching all season like its May after an incredible start. As this month begins he a 0.86 ERA and otherworldly WHIP of 0.69. Opponents are batting just .150 against him. Cueto's deceptive deliveries and various arm angles are working magically thus far.

            *Greinke, Zack - 11-4 (4-1 A)

In spite of how well Arizona has started the season, Greinke's been more inconsistent than normal. More than anything, he's left too many pitches in the zone, giving up too many base-knocks and home runs. Let's see if the right-hander finds his usual rhythm this month.

            *Kershaw, Clayton - 13-3 (8-1 H)

Though Kershaw has not walked many batters, he's missed his spots which has hurt him. He's set such a high standard it's almost impossible to maintain and his velocity has dipped now in his 10th season. Still, he's still Kershaw and once the slider and curveball are back hitting their marks, watch the W's start piling up.

            McCullers Jr., Lance - 9-4 (5-1 A)

Other than one start, McCullers Jr. has been in great form so far in 2018. His curveball is a work of art and among the best in the majors. His tendency to get hurt is what is holding him back from becoming next level hurler. If the hook and the fastball are on, he is one tough customer.

            *Price, David - 10-3 (5-0 H)

Price's days as a top notch starter appear over, but he can still be a very good pitcher. His command of the fastball is what's changed (along with lower velocity), which makes his breaking pitches and off-speed stuff more of a focus for hitters. Nevertheless, when Price is right (sorry about that), he's more than capable of stringing a groups of victories together.

            Strasburg, Stephen 12-4 (6-2 A)

Like his team, Strasburg has been up and down in the early part of the season. What has really hurt him is fat tosses in the zone, with seven balls flying over the fence already, after conceding an average of 14 per year since 2015. Just like the Nationals, it's just a matter of time before Strasburg is back in the groove.

            *Sale, Chris - 13-4 (7-2 H A)

Unquestionably one of the premier pitchers in baseball who has gotten smarter in trying to work deeper into games and pitch to more contact. That does not mean the big lefty cannot dial it up and punch-out a hitter when needed. Sale’s just figured out how to be more valuable to his team.

            BAD MONTH PITCHERS

            *Cashner, Andrew - 5-10 (2-8 A)

In the world of baseball betting, this is one of our favorite hurlers. Time and again oddsmakers consider his stuff rather than how he actually pitches. For every two OK starts are three lousy one's, which helps to explain his team's 51-76 record in his starts since 2013 and why Cashner is 43-68 lifetime.

              MLB

              Tuesday, May 1

              Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

              Streaking:
Jarlin Garcia, Miami Marlins (1-0, 1.00 ERA, $95)

On a day with elite starters like Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer, and Justin Verlander climbing the hill for their respective clubs, who whould've thought we'd have a Miami Marlins' pitcher listed as our Streaking Starter of the day. Well, here we are - and lefty Jarlin Garcia deserves the shine. In three career starts since joining Miami's rotation, Garcia has only allowed one run over 16 innings of work (0.56 ERA) and owns a WHIP of 0.8125.

"Jarlin the Marlin" and the Fish are slight home dogs at +100 today versus Zach Eflin and the Phillies.

              Slumping:
Alex Cobb, Baltimore Orioles (0-3, 13.11 ERA, $-332)

Late signing, limited preparation for the season, new environment - the time for excuses is over for Alex Cobb. The Baltimore Orioles are paying this guy $14 million to pitch this year and $57 million in guaranteed money over the next four seasons. After three starts with the O's he is 0-3, has an ERA of 13.11, a WHIP of 2.83, and an opponent's on-base percentage of .507. Even more alarming than those pathetic numbers is the fact that in two of his three starts he tallied exactly ZERO strikeouts!

Cobb looks to get things on track today as a +165 underdog in sunny Anaheim against Nick Tropeano and the Angels.

              Tuesday's Top Trends

              * Indians are 10-2 in Mike Clevinger's last 12 starts. -185 today vs. Rangers.
              * Royals are 3-12 in their last 15 games following a loss. +250 today @ Red Sox.
              * Reds are 3-13 in their last 16 home games vs. a right-handed starter. +105 today vs. Brewers (Anderson).
              * Phillies are 15-3 in their last 18 games vs. a left-handed starter. -110 today @ Marlins (Garcia).
              * Tigers are 2-12 in Matthew Boyd's last 14 starts. +130 today vs. Rays.
              * Astros are 14-2 in Justin Verlander's last 16 starts. -170 today vs. Yankees.
              * Twins are 1-10 in their last 11 overall. -135 today vs. Blue Jays.
              * Over is 10-1 in Cardinals' last 11 interleague home games. CHW/STL total: 9.
              * Athletics are 2-10 in the last 12 meetings with the Mariners. +105 today @ Seattle.

              Weather Watch

Tuesday should be a beautiful day for baseball all around the Majors with just a few winds to take note of:

              * Rangers at Indians (-190, 9.5): There will be a 12-14 mile per hour hitter's wind gusting out to right field for tonight's game at progressive field.
              * Rays at Tigers (+135, 8.5): At Comerica there is a 12-14 mph pitcher's wind blowing in from right field.
              * Rockies at Cubs (-168, 11): The Windy City will live up to its name today, with a 16-20 mph wind gusting straight out to center for tonight's game against the Rockies.
              * White Sox at Cardinals (-220, 9): And finally at Busch Stadium, there will be a 14-16 mph hitter's wind blowing out to left field.

              Ump of the Day

Mike Estabrooks: Total bettors should take note with Estabrooks behind the plate for tonight's game between the Pirates and Nationals in Washington. The Under is 4-2 when Estabrooks is calling balls and strikes this season, maybe in part due to his high strike rate of 64.3. The Under is 5-0 in Estabrook's last five games behind home plate against Washington and 8-2 in his last 10 games behind home plate vs. Pittsburgh. The total for tonight's game is currently 7.5.

Tuesday's NBA Playoffs betting preview and odds

Round 2 tips off for the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Toronto Raptors and the New Orleans Pelicans and the Golden State Warriors go to battle in Game 2 of their series out west.

Cleveland Cavaliers at Toronto Raptors (-6.5, 214.5)

                Series tied 0-0.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have knocked the Toronto Raptors out of the playoffs the last two years but the Raptors are finally the favored team and hope to play like it when the teams begin their Eastern Conference semifinals matchup Tuesday night with Game 1 in Toronto. The Cavaliers won the conference final in six games over the Raptors in 2016 and swept a semifinals meeting last season en route to their third consecutive conference crown. LeBron James averaged 36 points in that sweep for Cleveland and carried his squad through a seven-game battle with the Indiana Pacers in the first round by pouring in 34.4 per game, including 45 in the 105-101 clincher Sunday.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT, TSN (Toronto)

LINE MOVES AND BETTING ACTION: The Raptors opened as 6-point home favorites and as of Monday night that spread has been bumped up to -6.5. 55 percent of wagers have come in on the Raptors as chalk. The total hit betting boards at 218 and has been dropped considerably to 214.5.

                INJURY REPORT:

Cavaliers - No injuries to report.

Raptors - No injuries to report.

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (54-35 SU, 33-55-1 ATS, 41-46-2 O/U): James played 41.2 minutes per game in the series with Indiana after playing all 82 games during the regular season, and remarkably he is showing no ill effects of the heavy workload. "That's why you play the minutes throughout the course of the season the way he does: When these types of situations happen, you're prepared for them," coach Tyronn Lue told the media. "So he's used to playing 41, 42 minutes and being able to take it with his body and still be able to produce. A lot of guys, they get in the playoffs, they're not used to playing that many minutes, and then it being a high-intensity atmosphere, it's kind of hard for those guys to perform." James, who admitted after Sunday's win that he was "burnt right now," produced 29.3 points, eight assists and 6.7 rebounds in three matchups with the Raptors during the regular season.

ABOUT THE RAPTORS (63-25 SU, 47-40-1 ATS, 44-43-1 O/U): Toronto figures to have a big advantage when the teams go to their benches, and the Raptors' reserves were given a big boost with the return of guard Fred VanVleet for Game 6 against Washington. "He just keeps us all calm out there, even when things are not going right," fellow reserve Pascal Siakam told reporters of VanVleet, who missed four games in the series due to a shoulder injury. "He just controls the tempo. We just have a cool factor when he's there." Cleveland knows all about VanVleet's ability to provide a spark, as the second-year pro averaged 15.7 points and five assists in 25.3 minutes off the bench against the Cavaliers this season.

                MATCHUP CHART:

                TRENDS:

                * Cavaliers are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
                * Raptors are 5-0-1 ATS in their last 6 home games.
                * Under is 6-2 in Cavaliers' last 8 overall.
                * Over is 6-1 in Raptors' last 7 Conference Semifinals games.
                * Cavaliers are 5-1-1 ATS in the last 7 meetings.

New Orleans Pelicans at Golden State Warriors (-10.5, 226.5)

It appears Golden State star guard Stephen Curry will be back in action on Tuesday when the Warriors host the New Orleans Pelicans in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals. Curry hasn't played since spraining the MCL in his left knee on March 23 but coach Steve Kerr classified him as probable after Monday's practice.

Curry participated in a lengthy scrimmage on Sunday and had no issues during Monday's practice, which prompted Kerr to say, "I'd be very surprised if he didn't play."

                TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT

LINE MOVES AND BETTING ACTION: The Warriors opened as 10.5-point home favorites and as of Monday night that number has yet to move. 57 percent of early wagers are on the underdog Pelicans. The total hit betting boards at 226.5 and has not budged off the opening number.

                INJURY REPORT:

Pelicans - C A. Ajinca (Out For Season, Knee), PG F. Jackson (Out For Season, Foot), C D. Cousins (Out For Season, Achilles).

Warriors - PF Luc Mbah a Moute (Questionable, shoulder).

ABOUT THE PELICANS (52-35 SU, 49-37-1 ATS, 50-37 O/U): New Orleans posted a four-game sweep of the Portland Trail Blazers in its first postseason series but never found a groove or clicked on all cylinders during the Game 1 loss to the Warriors. "It's one game," Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry told reporters. "At the end of the day, it's one game, and you know, we've been playing great basketball, and I'm not so sure if the week off helped us, really. I thought we lost a little bit of our rhythm." Star power forward Anthony Davis had 21 points and 10 rebounds in Game 1 but was just 9-of-20 shooting while guard Jrue Holiday had only 11 points on 4-of-14 shooting.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (63-25 SU, 38-49-1 ATS, 42-45-1 O/U): Kerr said there wouldn't be a minutes restriction placed on Curry and standout forward Kevin Durant is expecting Curry to play at his typical "elite" level. "When somebody is as consistent as he is, no matter if you miss time, between games when he was hurt he was putting in major work," Durant told reporters after Monday's practice. "When great players leave like this with an injury and come back, I expect him to be who he is." Shooting guard Klay Thompson scored 27 points in the opener and Durant added 26 as Golden State didn't lack for firepower with Curry seated on the bench in street clothes.

Tuesday's NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs betting preview and odds

Round 2 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs continues Tuesday night with a pair of Game 3s. Both the Penguins and Capitals and the Predators and Jets head to the lower seeded city with their series all even at 1-1.

Washington Capitals at Pittsburgh Penguins (-145, 5.5)

                            Series tied 1-1.

After ending the Pittsburgh Penguins' streak of road playoff victories at six, the Washington Capitals look to extend their good fortune away from home on Tuesday in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series at PPG Paints Arena. The Capitals, who evened the series with Sunday's 4-1 triumph, have won all three road games this postseason and seven of nine dating to last year - including two of three in the Steel City.

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (54-27-8-1, 50-38 O/U): Evgeni Kuznetsov and T.J. Oshie are expected to play on Tuesday despite both sustaining minor hand injuries during the tail end of the third period in Game 2. "Everybody's fine. Same traveling party. Same lineup," said coach Barry Trotz, who noted that Andre Burakovsky could resume skating soon following a surgical procedure last week on the heels of an upper-body injury suffered against Columbus on April 15. As for Tom Wilson, the first-line forward did not receive a disciplinary hearing for his hit to the head of defenseman Brian Dumoulin, multiple media outlets reported on Monday.

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (52-32-4-2, 49-36 O/U): Evgeni Malkin (lower body) will be a game-time decision on Tuesday after missing three contests with a lower-body injury sustained in Game 5 of the first-round series versus Philadelphia. The former Hart Trophy recipient centered the second line between wings Dominik Simon and Bryan Rust during Monday's practice while fellow forward Phil Kessel shuffled to the third line alongside Derick Brassard and Conor Sheary. Carl Hagelin (upper body) and Dumoulin (upper body) also are questionable to play in Game 3, with the former changing his non-contact jersey to a traditional yellow one midway into Monday's practice while the latter wore a non-contact sweater throughout.

                            Series tied 1-1.

The Winnipeg Jets were agonizingly close to winning the first two games of the Western Conference semifinals on the road, but nonetheless host the Nashville Predators in Tuesday’s Game 3 having swiped home-ice advantage. Now the Jets have to find a way to bounce back less than 48 hours after a grueling 5-4 double-overtime loss, one in which Nashville’s playoff experience gained during last year’s run to the Stanley Cup Finals shined through in sudden death.
