Race number 6 – Humana Distaff Stakes (Gr. 1)
is for fillies and mares, four years old and upward run at a distance of seven furlongs over the dirt with a post time of 1:13 PM EST. Our selections are: 8-1-5

    8. American Gal (7/2 ML) –returned to the track to kick off her four-year-old campaign on April 8thin the Madison (Gr. 1) at Keeneland and battled Finley’sluckycharm before relenting a finishing third. She needed that race to shake the rust off and she should do battle with Finley’sluckycharm again today, but should have the stamina to finish her off this time.Trainer Simon Callaghan retains jockey Jose Ortiz and American Gal should return to her winning ways.

    9. Finley’sluckycharm (7-2 ML) –This five-year-old mare is a machine. She has finished first or second in 13 of her 15 career starts and she should do battle with American Gal again today.

    10. Lewis Bay (3-1 ML) –This five-year-old mare is trained by Chad Brown and she seems to show up every race. She will sit off of the pace set by our top two choices and will be ready to pounce if the pace breaks down.

Race number 7 – Longines Churchill Distaff Turf Mile Stakes (Gr. 2) is for fillies and mares, four years old and upward run at a distance of one mile over the turf with a post time of 1:55 PM EST. Our selections are: 9-3-11

    9. On Leave (8/1 ML) –this five-year-old mare for trainer Shug McGaughey is making her second start of 2018 and she has hit the board in 13 of her 15 career starts. If she shook the rust off in the Honey Fox (Gr. 3) at Gulfstream Park on March 31stshe should be ready to run a great race here.

    10. Dream Awhile (7-2 ML) –The Chad Brown trainee is coming in off of a 10 week layoff but he has a knack for spotting his turf horses and she should be ready to fire today.

    11. La Coronel (3-1 ML) –This Mark Casse trainee returns to Churchill Downs after winning the Edgewood (Gr. 3) on Derby day last year. She has not won a race yet in 2018, but should compete with this field.

Race number 8 – Churchill Downs Stakes presented by Twinspires.com (Gr. 2) is for four year olds and upward run at a distance at seven furlongs over the dirt with a post time of 2:45 PM EST. Our selections are: 3-7-1

    3. Imperial Hint (9-5 ML) –all this horse does is win demonstrated by his 6 wins in his last seven races. He normally likes to take the lead, but with the presence of 2 Chief Cicatriz in this race he will sit just off the pace and wait to make his move when asked by jockey J.J. Castellano.

    4. Limousine Liberal (4-1 ML) –this horse made me a ton of money last year on Derby day when we took advantage of a wet track which was to his liking. The six-year-old gelding shows no signs of slowing down and is making his second start off the layoff for trainer Ben Colebrook.

    5. Whitmore (6-1 ML) –this five-year-old gelding has excelled as a sprinter since 2016, but this is the first time he has tried the seven furlong distance. Given that he is a closer, the extra distance should be to his liking.

Race number 9 – American Turf Stakes presented by Ram Trucks (Gr. 2) is for three year olds at a distance of one and one sixteenth miles over the turf with a post time of 3:37 PM EST. Our selections are: 9-1-6

    9. Captivating Moon (6/1 ML) –the scratch of Rushing Fall has made this a wide open affair and this colt has made four starts on the turf in his career and has finished in the Exacta in each of those starts. He will be flying late and has a great turf jockey in Florent Geroux. We are getting value here at anything near the morning line.

    10. Speed Franco (6-1 ML) –the only time this colt missed the Exacta is when they tried to shorten him up to a 7.5 furlong distance. He can fly and jockey Emisael Jaramillo is fearless and will try to wire this field from the inside post position.

    11. River Boyne (5-1 ML) –comes in riding a three race win streak as he adjusts to North American racing after beginning his career in Europe. If he continues to improve he could be a factor in here.

Race number 10 – Pat Day Mile Stakes presented by LG and E and KU (Gr. 3) is for three year olds at a distance of one mile over the dirt with a post time of 4:28 PM EST. Our selections: 8-11-12

    8. Mask (4-1 ML)– trainer Chad Brown has another good three-year-old colt in his barn and this one has been training with Derby contender Good Magic and looking good according to reports. The Mucho Macho Man winner has not been seen since his victory in January at Gulfstream Park, but if he improves on that effort he should clear this field.

    9. Sporting Chance (8-1 ML)– This D. Wayne Lukas trainee was expected by his connections to be a Derby horse, but an erratic stretch run in the Blue Grass Stakes (Gr. 2) at Keeneland left him out of the Derby field. I don’t think he wants the distance and the drop back to the mile distance might be just what this colt needs.

    10. Restoring Hope (9-2 ML)– Mike Smith jumps on this Bob Baffert trainee, and Baffert puts the blinkers back on after a nice third place finish in the Wood Memorial (Gr. 2) at Aqueduct on April 7th. Baffert had high hopes with this one before Derby prep season, but he fell behind fellow barn mates, Justify, McKinzie and Solomini in training and didn’t earn enough points to qualify for today’s main event. He is out of Giant’s Causeway and has shown heart in each of his starts.

Race number 11 – Old Forester Turf Classic Stakes (Gr. 1) is for four year olds and upward at a distance of one and one eighth miles over the turn with a post time of 5:25 PM EST. Our selections: 10-9-6

    10. Beach Patrol (5-2 ML) –makes his 2018 debut off of a five plus month layoff for Chad Brown. If he runs back to his recent performances he should handle this field with ease. As we saw on Friday though neither Abel Talsman nor Rushing Fall could dominate fields that they appeared to out class so make sure you don’t key him in all of your multi-race wagers.

    11. Yoshida (15-1 ML) –trainer Bill Mott does not always have them ready to fire first off a long layoff, but my gut is telling me that we are getting value with this one anywhere near that morning line. He closed out 2017 with a win and two second place finishes and should be charging down the lane late.

    12. Arklow (12-1 ML) –making his third start off of a layoff for the red hot Brad Cox barn, this colt has shown steady improvement and a late closing kick that will benefit him in this field.

Race number 12 – Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (Gr. 1) is for three year olds at a distance of one and one fourth miles over the dirt with a post time of 6:50 PM EST. Our selections: 6-9-7

    6. Good Magic (12-1 ML) –I have been high on this colt since last fall and loved his run in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile where he just ran by the field. I think he will sit off a fast early pace set by Promises Fulfilled and possibly Justify and make his move in the far turn. I think he has the determination to hold off the late chargers and give Chad Brown his first Kentucky Derby victory.

    7. Hofburg (20-1 ML) –I loved the charge this colt made in the Florida Derby (Gr. 1) at Gulfstream Park in only his third career start. He is developing rapidly and all indications this week are that he looked good on the track and is improving. It has been a number of years since we have seen a longshot win the Kentucky Derby, but this may just be the horse to blow up the tote board.

    8. Justify (3-1 ML) – I’ve really struggled with this selection as I keep having flashbacks to 2015 and a Bob Baffert trainee who came into the Derby undefeated and was being called a “freak”.That horse was Dortmund who went on to finish third in that Derby to eventual Triple Crown winner American Pharoah.Dortmund had six races under his belt going into the Derby including two Grade One wins. Justify has one Grade One win, an impressive Santa Anita Derby, but other than that he has not been tested. I also fear he will try to battle Promises Fulfilled out of the gate and run himself out before the race really starts, but I guess that is why they run the race.

Other horses I would recommend having on your exotic tickets are:

    11.Bolt d’Oro
    12.Audible
    13.Lone Sailor
    14.Magnum Moon
15.Combatant (he will make one late run and could crash the Trifecta and Superfecta)

I am against Mendelssohn and if he makes me look like a fool, it won’t be the first time, or the last. Either way, enjoy the Kentucky Derby whether you are at the track, an OTB, a Derby party or just at home in front of your TV with a $2 win ticket and a dream.

      The First Saturday in May

      Race 1: 3-2-6-5

      Race 2: 6-7-5

      Race 3: 6-5-2

      Race 4: 5-9-12-2-3-4

      Race 5: 6-9-4-1

Race 6 Grade I Humana Distaff

Skye Diamonds (4): She is the best when she has some speed to run at and she did not get that last time but she will here. Third off the layoff she is primed for a big effort.

Lewis Bay (5): Loved the way Irad rode her in the Madison taking back and making one sustained run with all the pace signed on here that is the style that will likely win this race.

Ivy Bell (3): Made the first race under Pletcher a very impressive winning one and will be in the mix here with another step forward.

American Gal (8): Was so game in the Grade I Madison only losing by a neck off a 10 month layoff she is one to consider here however coming back on less than a month’s rest I’m concerned she will bounce off that effort.

Race 7 Grade II Distaff Turf Mile

La Coronel (11): She has always been better at the mile and cutback should be to her liking with the lack of speed she will have a tactical advantage here. The horses she lost to in her last race were very classy and she will get some class relief. They have to bet her today.

On Leave (9): Was left with too much to do in her last over a Gulf course that was not kind to horses coming from off the pace that day.

Res Ipsa (7): Has shown to be tactical so I’m unsure why she was so far back in the Honey Fox. She will be second off the layoff for connections who point to this meet and this day specifically.

Race 8 Grade I Churchill Downs Sprint

Awesome Slew (10): He ran second in this race and if he chooses to go here over Friday’s race he is once again live and should receive those solid fractions in front of him to make a dent late.

Imperial Hint (3): Very fast horse who will be looking to take them gate to wire. There is other pace presence in here but we will see if they are fast enough to keep up early or late.

Whitmore (1): Seems to have regained his form since returning from the Breeders Cup and will be in good position to stalk Imperial Hint and make one run coming for home.

Race 9 Grade II American Turf

Tigers Rule (7): Had a disastrous trip in the Transylvania Stakes and deserves another chance in this spot at what should be a square price.

Maraud (10): Had absolutely nothing in the Transylvania but has been too constant not to give another chance. Being in the one hole that day might have taken its toll.

River Boyne (6): Since breaking his maiden he has improved in each race capturing The Pasadena very impressively in his last. He will now take on the east coast turf talent.

Rushing fall (12): Superstar filly is one of a few Cross entered for both days. If she runs in this race she deserves a look at a better price then she’ll be Friday.

Race 10 Grade III Pat Day Mile

Sporting Chance (11): Has always been more of a one turn horse and I am happy to see him pass up on the Derby with the chance to run in a race he can win.

Restoring Hope (12): Will be better suited as a one turn horse. Takes the blinks off and turns back for Bob and Mike.

Madison’s Luna (7): He could be any kind of freak after his last race which was visually impressive. He’s one to watch going forward.

National Flag (1): Showed a new dimension when being able to come from off the pace last out. Love to see Pletcher stick with Prat in this spot.

Mask (8): Was once talked about as a ligament derby contender before getting hurt this is the first step towards something bigger down the line.

Race 11 Grade I Turf Classic

Beach Patrol (10): If he is ready to run his best race off the layoff which he typically does then he is going to be VERY difficult to beat today and one of the more likely winners on the card.

Synchrony (7): Has really turned the corner after his break this summer and fall with another step forward. He is a major player.

Yoshida (9): The jockey change to Jose Ortiz was needed. I personally think he is a perfect fit for this horse.

Race 12 Grade I Kentucky Derby

Audible (5): He has improved with each and every start and comes into the race with the patterns of many of the past winners. With his inside draw he should secure a spot on the rail around the first turn and start picking horses off turning for home.

Bolt d’ Oro (11): In the SA Derby he regressed a little off his big effort in the San Felipe which is ok with me and had me believing he will peak on Derby Day. This race will give him a pace to run at which he did not have in the SA Derby.

Justify (7): The monster of the race making his 4th start in the Derby and trying to break the Apollo curse. While he does look like a monster he will have to answer many questions in the derby but must be used on all tickets.

Vino Rosso (18): Took a giant step forward in the Wood Memorial and will have to do so again here, however he has made a great impression on the track in the weeks leading up to the derby.

Mendelson (14): Will try to be the first European based horse to win the derby but he is different, he has the pedigree. Watch to see how the filly Rayya runs in the Oaks on Friday as he trounced her in the UAE Derby.

Hofburg (9): We were on him long before the FL Derby and now he’s quickly becoming the buzz horse. He will likely be over bet.

        FYI ..

        The showers have intensified.

Rain will continue for next few hours ...

"We can anticipate seeing the price on some, if not all, of these horses being slashed during the course of the day"

Derby contenders capable of running on a wet track include ... Solomini, Instilled Regard, Bolt d’Oro, Vino Rosso and Bravazo.

#14 Mendelssohn - Top Choice suggest Win-Place-Show Wager

Love the Post Position as he will have extra room at the break being the last horse in the Main Gate as both the #14 and #15 post has the benefit of the extra space between the main gate and auxiliary gate. I know that horses shipping from overseas haven’t had success in the past in the Kentucky Derby but this horse has shown he can ship from overseas and win as he won here in the BC Juvenile Turf Race. It also must be noted that he raced overseas on Oct 14 then at DelMar on Nov 3rd that was pretty remarkable for a 2 year old to run two races so close together and have a grueling ship thrown in on top of that. Mendelssohn raced on dirt for the first time in his last start and had his best race of his career winning the UAE Derby by 18 1/2 lengths. With 7 lifetime starts this horse has the perfect foundation and shipping all over the world has given him experience to handle all kinds of different distractions. With 5 starts at 2 and 2 starts at 3 this horse is fresh and ready to go. Note Mendelssohn has victories carrying 126 Lbs, 131 Lbs and 134 Lbs no other horse in this Derby field has carried more than 124 lbs in victory.

#6 Good Magic - Long shot Pick suggest Win-Place-Show Wager for 1/2 of Mendelssohn

I love how this horse has been brought into this race. He had 3 starts as a two year old and even though he hadn’t broke his maiden the connections knew what they had and raced him in the BC Juvenile and he exploded in the stretch to win going away. This year he has 2 starts a 3rd in the Fountain of Youth a race that Chad Brown said he was probably short being the first start of the year . But came back in the Bluegrass and once again showed that explosion in the stretch to pull away. Good Magic has the perfect running style for the Derby as he owns tactical speed to get away where he wants which is just off the pace setters in a stalking position so that when he does make his move he gets the jump on all the closers. Good Magic is 5 for 5 for hitting the board and with just 5 starts still has potential for another big jump up talent wise. Good Magic is my long shot choice.

            #7 Justify

In a few weeks we could be talking about Justify and using words like Super Horse, possible Triple Crown Winner but right now we are asking him to do a lot of things he has never done before. We all know about the curse of Apollo as no horse that hasn’t raced as a 2 year old has won the Derby since 1882 when Apollo did it. With only 3 starts I’m more concerned about how will he react to racing on another surface as all three races were at Santa Anita. How does he react to not being on the lead as Promises Fulfilled with be the horse setting the pace? He’s only raced once against stakes company and that was in the Santa Anita Derby and honestly there was only one other horse in that 7 horse field that had a chance and that was Bolt D’Oro who didn’t need the points to get into the Derby as he already had enough points to get in the Derby but Justify did need to win. How will Justify handle the large field as all 3 of his races had short fields. Again in a few weeks we will have all of these answers but right now at a short price I’m not going to pay to find out but with that said he has to be on our tickets because I don’t want to miss an exacta or Trifecta because I left him off the ticket.

            #11 Bolt D’Oro

Picks up Victor Espinoza as Javier Castellano chooses to ride Audible after being aboard Bolt D’Oro the last 2 races. Some will look at that as a strike against Bolt D’Oro but I don’t as Todd Pletcher will supply Castellano with many more live mounts than Mick Ruis will so this was a business decision I feel more than a talent decision. Victor clearly knows how to win Triple Crown Races so I’m fine with him aboard. There is too much value to leave him off the ticket as because he was clearly beat by Justify in the Santa Anita Derby people are now down on him. Remember he didn’t need the points I don’t think they raced him all out I think they wanted to leave something in the tank for the Derby. Justify was on an uncontested lead with moderate fractions. He wasn’t getting by him that day but Justify won’t be on a uncontested lead today and the difference in price makes this horse attractive. Bolt D’Oro will be in that preferred stalking group and is 6 for 6 in the money and 5 of his 6 races were graded stakes. He’s clearly the most accomplished against the toughest completion in the field. Bolt D’Oro is the forgotten horse with a ton a value and will be on all my tickets

Here is my exact Betting Ticket how I am playing the Kentucky Derby. I want to thank all of you for your support and Good Luck to us all.
