The Key: The San Diego Padres will be hungry for a victory at home tonight to avoid the sweep after losing the first two games of this series to the Washington Nationals. I like the price we are getting with them with stud rookie Joey Lucchesi on the mound. Lucchesi is 3-2 with a 3.13 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 7 starts this season to go along with 40 strikeouts in 37 1/3 innings. Lucchesi is 2-0 with a 2.53 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 4 home starts as well. Gio Gonzalez hasn’t had the greatest success against the Padres. He is 3-2 with a 3.50 ERA and 1.36 WHIP in 6 lifetime starts against them. Take San Diego.

My 1* Free Play is on the Washington Nationals (9:10 EST).
Perhaps we could call these starters a “wash,” but clearly the high-powered Nats have the advantage at the plate and in this particular matchup that’s going to make the visitors well worth the price of admission.
The Nats hand the ball to Gio Gonzalez (4-2, 2.33 ERA) and he most recently gave up zero runs off two hits while striking out five over five innings in a rain-shortened start against the Phillies on Friday.
The home side counters with Joey Lucchesi (3-2, 3.13) who most recently gave up three earned runs off five hits over five innings in a loss to the Dodgers on Friday. Lucchesi for the most part has been superb, coming into this one having posted a 1.18 WHIP over 37.1 innings of work.
I’ll point out though that Washington is a solid 10-7 (+2.2 units) on the road this year, while San Diego is just 6-14 (-7.8 units) at home.
As mentioned off the top, I do in fact think these starters are even, but the numbers/trends point to the Nationals as the correct call here.
Consider Washington on Wednesday night.

The Houston Astros have already outscored the Oakland A’s 20-4 in the first two games in this series. They should be able to win by multiple runs again today. Gerrit Cole has actually been their best starter this season. He is 3-1 with a 1.42 ERA and 0.69 WHIP in seven starts, including 3-0 with a 0.39 ERA and 0.61 WHIP in three road starts. He has already struck out 77 batters in 50 2/3 innings. Daniel Mengden is 7-14 with a 5.01 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in 28 big league starts. Mengden is 0-3 with a 7.22 ERA and 1.69 WHIP in four previous starts against the Astros. Houston is 6-1 in Cole’s last seven starts. Houston is 9-2 in its last 11 road games. The Astros are 23-8 in the last 31 meetings. The A’s are 2-11 in Mengden’s last 13 starts vs. AL West teams. Give me the Astros on the Run Line.

Wednesday MLB Free play. My selection is on San Francisco over Philadelphia at 7:05 pm et on Wednesday.
I like the fact that we're able to get the Giants at an underdog price here as I believe they have a slight edge on the mound and will be highly-motivated to bounce back from a pair of rather ugly losses to open this series.
Chris Stratton has been a really good find for the Giants, stepping in and pitching well in the starting rotation this season, save for one bad start against the Dodgers. Note that he's worked at least six innings in four of his last five starts but he hasn't been overworked, throwing more than 100 pitches only twice over that stretch.
Nick Pivetta got off to a solid start this season but enters this start off back-to-back poor outings. Since winning Pivetta's first five starts, the Phillies have now dropped his last two.
The Giants have had a great deal of success at this park in recent years, even if they haven't enjoyed any in this particular series. Keep in mind, San Francisco had won four games in a row entering this series. Take San Francisco (8*).

I'll take my chances here with Arizona as a dog with Pat Corbin on the mound. Corbin has been one of the bigger surprises early on in 2018. He's 4-0 with a 2.15 ERA and 0.761 WHIP in 7 starts and has racked up a ridiculous 60 strikeouts in 46 innings of work. He's already made two starts against the Dodgers and only given up 1 run on 4 hits with 17 strikeouts in 13 1/3 innings. Not very often will you find a pitcher throwing at an elite level against an opponent he's fared extremely well against as an underdog. Let's also not overlook the Dodgers struggles. LA has lost 3 straight and are just 3-7 in their last 10 overall. Give me the Diamondbacks +110!

We had a play on Philadelphia in its Game 4 victory and while many will likely once again be back on the 76ers, we’re going to go the other way as we look for the hungry home side to risk life and limb in trying to end this series right here and now. We’ll be the first to admit that we’re surprised at how well the Celtics have played in the postseason without Kyrie Irving, but regardless, home floor advantage simply can’t be overlooked in this situation.
