MLB | A's vs White Sox
Play on: A's -139 at BetPhoenix

#MLB FREE PICK FROM MIKE LUNDIN
The Oakland Athetlics have heated up and are gunning for their season-high fifth win in a row when they take on the Chicago White Sox Thursday night.
They slugged five homers in a 12-4 rout of the Padres on Wednesday and I think their bats will find plenty of success off White Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito (4-7, 7.19 ERA) as well. He's 1-4 with a 11.05 ERA in seven home starts on the season and gave up five runs on six hits with a pair of homers in 5 1/3 innings his last time out.
Chris Bassitt (0-2, 2.45 ERA) will take the ball for Oakland for his third start of the season. He was it up by the Halos his last time out but here he'll face a White Sox team which has averaged just 3.70 rpg on the season.
Athletics are 13-3 in their last 16 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400. White Sox are 1-8 in Giolito's last 9 starts vs. a team with a winning record.
        Free pick on Oakland Athletics.

MLB | Blue Jays vs Angels
Play on: Angels -152 at pinnacle

My free play is on the LA Angels at 10:05 ET. The LA Angels were once 13-3 but as the team's superstar Mike Trout gets sets to play his 1,000th career game, the Angels sit 39-35 and find themselves 10 games back of the first-place Houston Astros. The two-time AL Most Valuable Player leads the majors in HRs (23), runs (60) and on-base percentage (.469) and is 16-for-23 with four HRs, nine RBI and 11 walks during his eight-game hitting streak to boost his June batting average to a .448 (26-for-58. However, the Angels are just 2-6 during his eight-game hitting streak. LA opens a four-game series vs the visiting Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday. Toronto has answered a demoralizing 4-15 stretch by winning eight of its last 12 but the team's modest 35-39 record leaves them a whopping 16 games back of the first-place NY Yankees in the AL East.
Thursday night's pitching matchup features Toronto's Aaron Sanchez (3-5, 4.35 ERA) going up LA lefty Tyler Skaggs (6-4, 2.81 ERA). Sanchez is coming off striking out a season high-tying eight battlers while allowing three runs in six innings against Washington last Friday, failing to earn a decision in a 6-5 Blue Jays win. The Blue Jays are just 6-8 in Sanchez 2018 starts and Sanchez owns an 0-1 mark with a 2.03 ERA in three career appearances against the Angels. Meanwhile, LA's Skaggs improved to 3-0 with an 0.45 ERA in his last three starts after allowing two runs and striking out eight over seven innings in an 8-4 triumph at Oakland. The Angels are now 8-6 in all of his 2018 starts. Skaggs owns a 2-2 record with a 4.11 ERA in five career starts versus Toronto, including getting a no decision in a 5-4 Toronto win back on May 23 when he surrendered two HRs over five innings but just three runs.
Sure, Trout continues to make a strong case as MLB's best player but his team limps in just 2-7 in its last nine games and welcomes Toronto to Anaheim only 18-19 at home (minus-$564 vs the moneyline) on the season. The Blue Jays have played much better lately but note that in going 8-4 over their last 12 games, the breakdown is 8-1 at home and 0-3 on the road. Those three losses at Tampa Bay (June 11-13) leaves Toronto 1-8 in its last nine road games. Facing a red-hot Skaggs extends Toronto's road woes. Play the Angels.
          Good luck...Larry

CFL Betting Recap - Week 1
              Joe Williams

              League Betting Notes

-- Favorites went 3-1 SU in Week 1
              -- Favorites/underdogs went 2-2 ATS in Week 1
-- Home teams posted a 3-1 SU record in Week 1
-- Home teams posted a 3-1 ATS record in Week 1
-- The 'Under' went 3-1 in Week 1

              Analysis

The opening weekend was a disaster forthe East Division, as all three teams lost their initial game of the season. It was a great weekend for Ottawa (0-0), as they will head into Week 2 in first place as a result of everyone else's misfortune.

Toronto (0-1) lost a rematch of last season's East Final, as Saskatchewan (1-0) exacted a little revenge, 27-19. The Argonauts seemed to have a multitude of chances to get on top and bail out the betting public, but a pick-six late in the game sealed the win for the Roughriders. There were also just 22 total points heading into the fourth quarter, but 'under' (50) needed to chew their nails at the end of the 27-19 victory by the Riders.

Hamilton (0-1) took it on the chin in a 28-14 loss at Calgary (1-0), 28-14. QB Jeremiah Masoli rolled up 344 passing yards while also running for a touchdown, but it wasn't nearly enough for the Ti-Cats. QB Bo Levi Mitchell was up to his normal tricks, tossing for 297 yards and a touchdown while running for 12 yards. The Stamps pass defense isn't likely to be a problem this season, it's just that the Ti-Cats turned to the pass game and abandoned the run after being down late.

The most entertaining game of the weekend was the Thursday night opener in Winnipeg (0-1), as Edmonton (1-0) outlasted the Bombers 33-30. The Blue Bombers were able to hang on for the cover (+7.5), and that was never really in doubt. However, the Esks picked up a touchdown with 1:36 remaining, tying it up with a two-point conversion at 1:22 and then they posted the game-winning field foal from Sean Whyte with just :13 left in regulation. It was a punch in the gut for Winnipeg, and it will be interesting to see how they bounce back in Montreal this weekend.

                Thursday, June 21

Saskatchewan Roughriders (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) at Ottawa RedBlacks (0-0 SU, 0-0 ATS)

                Point-spread: Ottawa -3
                Total: 51

                Game Overview

Saskatchewan will be looking to take down its second-straight opponent from the East coming off last week’s win. Zach Collaros made a successful debut as the Roughriders’ new starting quarterback with 203 yards passing and one touchdown throw, while completing 72 percent of his 25 passing attempts. Jerome Messam was another big offseason addition at running back and he added 72 yards rushing on 21 carries in Friday’s victory.

Credit Saskatchewan’s defense for holding Ricky Ray to just 232 yards through the air and Toronto’s ground game to 54 total yards.

The RedBlacks come off that Week 1 bye fresh and ready to go. They lost to Saskatchewan 31-20 as 2 ½-point home favorites in the opening round of last season’s CFL playoffs with the Roughriders coming over from the West as a crossover team.

Heading into this season, Ottawa has Trevor Harris back as its starting quarterback after missing time in 2017 due to injury. Its offensive line was also banged up heading down the stretch last year. Harris proved he could move the ball down the field through the air with 4,679 yards passing in 15 games.

                Betting Trends

-- The road team has won the last four meetings both SU and ATS with the total going OVER in four of the last six matchups in this inter-division clash.

                Friday, June 22

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (0-1 SU, 1-0 ATS) at Montreal Alouettes (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS)

                Point-spread: Winnipeg -2
                Total: 46 ½

                Game Overview

The Blue Bombers turned to Chris Streveler as their starting quarterback for the injured Matt Nichols and he ended the game against Edmonton with three scoring strikes to keep things interesting for all four quarters.

He ended the game with 178 yards passing on 15 completions. Weston Dressler was his top target with four catches for 74 yards and a score and Andrew Harris racked-up 77 yards on 14 rushing attempts.

Montreal had the fewest straight-up victories of any CFL team last season (three) and its opening-day effort against BC could point towards another long campaign in 2018.

The Alouettes scored all 10 of their points in the opening quarter before their offense ground to a halt. Drew Willy got the start at quarterback and he ended the night with 281 yards passing, but just one touchdown pass against one interception.

                Betting Trends

-- Winnipeg has covered in six of its last seven road games against the Alouettes with the total going OVER in the last five meetings in Montreal.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS) at Edmonton Eskimos (1-0 SU, 0-1 ATS)
                Point-spread: Edmonton -6 ½
                Total: 55

                Game Overview

CFL fans waiting for the debut of Johnny Manziel as the Tiger-Cats newest quarterback will have to wait a bit longer after starter Jeremiah Masoli put on an aerial show that included 200 yards passing in the first two quarters of last week’s opener. He ended the game with 344 total yards passing, while completing 25 of his 36 attempts, but he did not find the end zone through the air. The Tiger-Cats only gained 56 yards on the ground on 12 rushing attempts.

Edmonton had its hands full with Winnipeg in Week 1 with the only difference in the final score being a field goal as time expired. Mike Reilly led the CFL in both passing yards and touchdown throws last season and he started the 2018 season with 408 yards and one score through the air. He was also the team’s leading rusher last Thursday night with 43 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. Derel Walker hauled in eight receptions for 176 yards as one of eight different players to catch a ball from Reilly in that game.

                Betting Trends

-- Hamilton is a perfect 5-0 ATS in its last five road games against the Eskimos and the total has gone OVER in five of the last six games of this inter-division tilt played in Edmonton.

                Saturday, June 23

Calgary Stampeders (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) at Toronto Argonauts (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS)

                Point-spread: Calgary -3 ½
                Total: 52 ½

                Game Overview

Calgary needed all four quarters to get past Hamilton last Saturday in a game that was closer than the final score might indicate. Bo Levi Mitchell threw for 297 total yards with 200 coming in the first half. It was the Stampeders’ ground game that helped generate 19 points in the fourth quarter. Don Jackson and Terry Williams rushed for a combined 117 yards and a score on 18 rushing attempts overall. Calgary did get a solid effort from its defense when it needed it the most.

The Argonauts scored a grand total of five points in the first three quarters of last week’s loss before posting 14 points in the fourth quarter to keep things interesting. Ricky Ray did not have his best night throwing the ball against Saskatchewan, especially in the first half when Toronto was held to 71 yards through the air. He ended the game with 232 yards passing with no touchdown throws against one interception.

                Betting Trends

-- Calgary has gone 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings overall and it is also 5-1 ATS in its last six road games against Toronto. The total has stayed UNDER in five of the last seven meetings.

                          STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTING PITCHERS

                          Streaking:
Tyson Ross, San Diego Padres (5-4, 3.51 ERA, $704)

Ross is the perfect value pitcher; as a member of the Padres' starting rotation, he won't often be favored to win, but is good enough to pull out the victory at often-terrific prices. The Padres had won six straight Ross starts prior to his previous outing and went into five of those games as the underdog – making it no surprise that he's near the top of the earnings list at the moment.

Ross is in tough against Madison Bumgarner and the Giants on Thursday, but at a healthy +135 and facing a Giants lineup that isn't exactly the New York Yankees, you could do worse in this spot.

                          Slumping:
Kyle Hendricks, Chicago Cubs (5-6, 3.55 ERA, $-1,074)

Ah, the wonder of betting odds. Compare Hendricks' basic stats to Ross' and there is precious little difference. But when you pitch for the Cubs, you are almost always going to be the fave – and in that regard, Hendricks has been a major disappointment. Chicago has dropped five of his previous seven starts overall, with three of those coming with the Cubs at -185 or better.

Hendricks is at -164 for today's encounter with Matt Harvey and the Cincinnati Reds; while Chicago is in a good spot here, there are just too many superior plays on the board.

Two pitchers in contention for a spot on the American League All-Star team square off Thursday afternoon, when the New York Yankees look to complete a three-game sweep of the visiting Seattle Mariners in the series finale. New York's Luis Severino is attempting to join Cleveland's Corey Kluber as the major leagues' only 11-game winners and ranks seventh with 118 strikeouts, with Seattle's James Paxton ninth at 115.

Severino has emerged as New York's ace by compiling a 24-8 record since the start of the 2017 campaign, and Paxton is well aware it will be a challenging afternoon. "You go out there knowing he's going to be pretty good," Paxton said during a television interview prior to Wednesday's game. "So you have to be pretty good as well. At the same time, it's just like every other game. I don't go out there and take my foot off the gas pedal, no matter who I'm facing." Giancarlo Stanton smacked a game-winning two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning in Wednesday's 7-5 triumph as the Yankees overcame a 5-0 deficit. Gary Sanchez hit a two-run shot in the eighth to forge a tie as New York moved a season-best 27 games above .500.

TV: 1:05 p.m. ET, ROOT Northwest (Seattle), YES (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners LH James Paxton (6-1, 3.53 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Luis Severino (10-2, 2.09)

Paxton is coming off his shortest start of the season at 2 1/3 innings as he escaped with a no-decision after being roughed up by Boston for six runs and six hits. The 24-year-old was superb while beating Tampa Bay in his last turn, when he struck out nine and allowed three hits over eight scoreless innings. Severino is 1-1 with a 2.84 ERA in two career starts against the Mariners, with the loss coming at Yankee Stadium on April 15, 2016.

The Minnesota Twins have had their way with two of the best teams in the American League in the past week and look to complete a three-game sweep of the visiting Boston Red Sox on Thursday afternoon. The Twins took two of three at AL Central-leading Cleveland last weekend before winning the first two games from Boston after Robbie Grossman and Max Kepler homered in a 4-1 victory Wednesday.

All-Star Game candidate Eddie Rosario added a pair of hits in the triumph for Minnesota and is 12-for-32 over his last eight games while improving his career batting average against the Red Sox to .322 in 18 contests. Snakebit right-hander Kyle Gibson will try to string together a pair of victories for the first time this season when he takes the mound for the Twins in the finale against 2016 AL Cy Young winner Rick Porcello. Boston is 2-for-22 with runners in scoring position in the series, including 0-for-9 in Wednesday’s setback, to fall two games behind the first-place New York Yankees in the AL East after losing four of five. Mookie Betts snapped out of a 3-for-18 swoon with a pair of hits in the loss for the Red Sox to raise his average to .340 - second in the majors.

Porcello gave up four runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts over six innings last Friday in a no-decision after posting three consecutive quality starts. Brian Dozier is just 8-for-40 but has launched three homers against Porcello, who is 10-10 with a 3.90 ERA in 29 starts versus Minnesota.

Gibson put an end to a 12-game winless stretch last Friday by limiting Cleveland to one run on three hits and four walks across seven innings in a 6-3 triumph. The 30-year-old Indiana native owns seven quality starts in his last 10 outings, but is just 1-3 during that stretch. Betts (4-for-8) and J.D. Martinez (9-for-25) have each homered twice versus Gibson, who is 1-2 with a 3.08 ERA in four career games against Boston.
