    Preview: Rays at Twins
    Gracenote
    Jul 11, 2018

The Tampa Bay Rays have won five in a row and are a season-high four games over .500 as they head to Minnesota to open a four-game series against the Twins on Thursday night. The Rays will look to make it six straight behind ace Blake Snell, who could have some extra motivation after he was snubbed for the American League All-Star team.

Snell, who beat the Twins with seven innings of one-run ball on April 21, was a stunning omission in the All-Star balloting -- the left-hander is second in the AL in both ERA (2.09) and wins (12). C.J. Cron hit a three-run homer Wednesday as Tampa Bay completed a three-game home sweep of Detroit to improve to 14-4 over its last 18. Minnesota kicked off its 11-game homestand by sweeping four from majors-worst Baltimore before taking two of three from another last-place club in Kansas City. Twins second baseman Brian Dozier has gone deep in back-to-back days and has three homers and eight RBIs during a six-game hitting streak.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FS Sun (Tampa Bay), FS North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays LH Blake Snell (12-4, 2.09 ERA) vs. Twins RH Kyle Gibson (3-6, 3.59)

Snell blanked the New York Mets on six hits over 7 1/3 innings last time out to extend his winning streak to four straight starts -- a span in which he has permitted only two runs and 14 hits while striking out 35 in 28 2/3 innings. He is 8-1 over his last 10 starts and has allowed two runs or fewer in nine of those outings. Dozier, linked to trade rumors, is 4-for-8 with a home run against Snell.

Gibson halted a three-start winless drought by giving up three runs on four hits over a season high-tying seven innings versus Baltimore on Saturday. Although he has won only twice since his season debut on March 31, he has permitted three earned runs or fewer in eight of his last nine starts. Gibson fell to 1-5 with a 6.81 ERA versus the Rays after a 10-1 loss to Snell in April.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Tampa Bay is 12-3 against AL Central foes.

    2. Twins 1B/DH Joe Mauer is 10-for-22 during a five-game hitting streak and needs one double to become the franchise's all-time leader.

    3. Rays OF Kevin Kiermaier went 3-for-5 on Wednesday to run his hitting streak to five games.

    PREDICTION: Rays 4, Twins 2

      Preview: Mariners at Angels
      Gracenote
      Jul 12, 2018

The Seattle Mariners made their three-run lead stand a day after squandering one and attempt to post their second series win over the Los Angeles Angels in less than two weeks when they visit their American League West rivals on Thursday for the rubber match of their three-game set. Seattle saw its 3-0 lead turn into a 9-3 loss in the series opener but bounced back Wednesday with a 3-0 victory.

David Freitas went 2-for-2 with his first major-league homer - a solo shot - while Marco Gonzales combined with two relievers on a two-hitter for the Mariners, who took two of three from Los Angeles at home from July 3-5. Seattle slugger Nelson Cruz delivered a two-run single in the triumph to match the RBI total from his previous 10 contests. Andrelton Simmons and Mike Trout accounted for their team's offense with singles in the fourth inning as the Angels fell to 3-2 on their six-game homestand. Trout is riding a four-game hitting streak during which he has gone 7-for-15 while Simmons went 4-for-9 in the first two games of the series.

TV: 10:07 p.m. ET, ROOT Northwest (Seattle), FS West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners LH James Paxton (8-3, 3.49 ERA) vs. Angels LH Tyler Skaggs (6-5, 2.64)

Paxton is coming off his first home loss since his season debut on March 31, a setback against Colorado on Saturday in which he yielded four runs and seven hits over seven innings. The 29-year-old Canadian fell one strikeout shy of his third consecutive double-digit output and eighth overall this season. Paxton has made 11 career starts versus Los Angeles, going 4-2 with a 2.07 ERA and 0.88 WHIP while limiting the Angels to a .169 batting average.

Skaggs is expected to return from a right adductor strain that landed him on the disabled list and make his first start since June 30 at Baltimore. The 26-year-old Californian allowed two runs - one earned - and four hits over five innings against the Orioles but did not factor in the decision. Skaggs is 1-2 with a 4.63 ERA in 10 career starts versus the Mariners, including a no-decision at Seattle on May 5 in which he gave up two runs over 5 1/3 frames.

      WALK-OFFS

      1. The Angels are 4-7 against the Mariners thus far in 2018 and have scored a total of two runs in their last three losses in the season series.

      2. Seattle SS Jean Segura won the Final Vote for this year's All-Star Game and will make his second career trip to the Midsummer Classic.

      3. Los Angeles placed Garrett Richards (elbow), who may be headed for Tommy John surgery, on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday and recalled fellow RHP Deck McGuire from Triple-A Salt Lake.

      PREDICTION: Mariners 8, Angels 2

        Preview: Dodgers at Padres
        Gracenote
        Jul 12, 2018

One day after being named to his first All-Star team, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Ross Stripling takes the mound Thursday in the finale of a four-game series against the host San Diego Padres. Stripling joined teammates Matt Kemp and Kenley Jansen on the National League roster after being named as a replacement for St. Louis’ Miles Mikolas, who is pitching on Sunday and will be unavailable for Tuesday’s Midsummer Classic.

Kenta Maeda pitched into the sixth inning and struck out nine batters in Wednesday’s 4-2 victory as the Dodgers won for the seventh time in 10 games. Max Muncy lost the All-Star Final Vote contest to Milwaukee’s Jesus Aguilar but recorded two hits in the win and is 12-for-36 with four homers over his last 10 contests. San Diego fell 15 games under .500 despite another strong effort from Austin Hedges, who notched two hits and is 9-for-21 with two blasts and five RBIs in his last six starts. Wil Myers hit six home runs over a four-game stretch for the Padres before going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in Wednesday’s loss.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles), FS San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers RH Ross Stripling (7-2, 2.22 ERA) vs. Padres RH Tyson Ross (5-7, 4.41)

Stripling started the season in the Dodgers’ bullpen but has been the team’s most consistent starter with a stellar 103-to-13 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 89 1/3 innings. The 28-year-old recorded his team-high seventh win on Saturday against the Los Angeles Angels, allowing one run and three hits over six frames. Jose Pirela is 5-for-6 with a home run against Stripling, who is 2-3 with a 3.04 ERA in nine career games (three starts) versus San Diego.

Ross lost his fourth straight decision on Saturday as he was battered by Arizona for eight runs and seven hits in two innings. “The All-Star break is coming at a nice time with just one more start before the break,” manager Andy Green told reporters. “He’s thrown some innings this year, but the velocity is there, the expectation for good outings is still there.” The 31-year-old Ross is 0-7 with a 3.49 ERA in 11 career games (nine starts) against the Dodgers.

        WALK-OFFS

        1. Muncy will face the Chicago Cubs’ Javier Baez in the first round of next Tuesday’s Home Run Derby.

        2. San Diego has scored fewer than three runs in five of its last nine games.

        3. The Dodgers claimed LHP Zac Rosscup off waivers from Colorado and designated LHP Edward Paredes for assignment.

        PREDICTION: Dodgers 7, Padres 3
