      Top 25 Notes

-- The Pac-12 continues to cannibalize itself, and now only Washington State has a remote shot at a playoff spot. That's because Washington lost again, this time to an unranked California side, while Oregon was curb-stomped by Arizona in the desert by a 44-15 score. Washington State won by a 41-38 score at Stanford, and it's likely that Wazzu, Utah and maybe Washington make the Top 25 rankings this week.

-- It was a battle between ranked teams in the Big Ten, and Iowa-Penn State turned out to be a good game. The Nittany Lions picked up the 30-24 win against the Hawkeyes. Penn State booted a field goal to push the total over (52.5) with 8:24, but they were unable to add to their total as Iowa hung on for the cover.

-- Clemson went down to Florida State and absolutely killed the Seminoles. That's not an exaggeration, either. The 59-10 win was FSU's worst-ever loss on their home field, and it was so bad in the second half that the telecast caught an old man reading a book with no shirt on. Not a pretty scene, literally and figuratively. The mighty have fallen hard in the Panhandle of Florida.

-- In Jacksonville, Florida was dropped in the Cocktail Party by Georgia, setting up a winner-take-all for the SEC East in Lexington. Wait, wuuuuut? Lexington? Yep, Kentucky scratched out an ugly, defensive last-second victory at Missouri, 15-14. Vegas had the Wildcats as 7 1/2-point 'dogs, and for about 55 minutes they looked absolutely correct. But the Wildcats ripped off a punt return for score, then a touchdown with :00 on the clock to steal one in Mizzou. The Wildcats are now 7-1 SU, but still just 4-4 ATS. The 'under' has hit in five in a row for UK.

Big Five Conference Report (ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC)

-- N.C. State-Syracuse was like watching a video game. The total (65) was set rather high for an ACC game, but obviously not nearly high enough. The Wolfpack and Orange exchanged haymakers and this was a three-point game late into the fourth quarter before the Orange pulled away for a 51-41 win and cover. ... Wake Forest took care of Louisville 56-35 for their first ACC victory and just their second cover in eight outings. The 'over' is now 6-1 in the past seven for the Deacs.

-- Michigan State was an underdog at home against red-hot Purdue, but dinged up Sparty told the Boilers to slow their roll. The Spartans held off the Boilermakers 23-13 for just their third cover in eight outings. The 'under' has cashed in a season-high three in a row for MSU. ... Maryland pounded Illinois by a 63-33 count, rebounding after being blanked at Iowa last week. The Terps have alternated straight-up wins and losses and covers and non-covers in each of their first seven games so far.

-- Iowa State took care of business against Texas Tech, 40-31. The Red Raiders fired out to a 10-0 lead, and they had a 17-14 lead at halftime. In addition, it was 31-31 late until Texas Tech's freshman QB was whistled for an intentional grounding call in the end zone for a safety, and then a late interception cost side bettors a cover. ... Oklahoma State rolled out to a 31-14 halftime lead, and they were up 10 after three on Texas. The Longhorns cut the lead to three, but could get no closer, losing 38-35. With the loss the Longhorns are likely eliminated from the playoff conversation, with Oklahoma still alive, although the light is flickering.

-- Oregon State headed to Boulder as 24 1/2-point underdogs, and they fell behind 31-10 heading to the fourth quarter. However, Colorado folded, and they folded hard. The Beavers outscored the Buffs 24-3 in the final quarter, and 7-0 in OT for the miracle victory. Technically, the Beavs are still alive for bowl eligibility, but that will take another miracle. ... Utah stepped all over UCLA by a 41-10 score in the Rose Bowl on Friday night. This game was a disappointment if you were holding an 'over' (54.5) ticket.

-- Mississippi State was a one-point favorite at home against Texas A&M, which raised some eyebrows. The Bulldogs got it done at home, however, pulling away with a 14-0 fourth quarter to win it 28-13. The Aggies are likely still hearing cowbells ringing in their ears. ... Tennessee gave South Carolina all they could handle, but in the end the Gamecocks hung on for the home win, but they never threatened to cover. They're 3-4 ATS, and they haven't had consecutive covers all season. The 'under' is 4-1 in the past five for the 'Cocks.

      Bad Beats

-- The 'under' (52) looked to be in OK shape with just 37 points on the board in Florida-Georgia through three quarters. However, UGA push the total over by just one point with a TD at 4:29 to take a 36-17 lead, which is what the game ended up.

-- If you were holding a moneyline ticket with Southern Methodist, ouch. They were tied up 20-20 with Cincinnati in OT. The Mustangs had the ball first and they were looking to take the lead in the extra session. However, the Bearcats picked it off and returned it for a pick-six to spoil the upset bid and dreams of SMU moneyliners.

-- Florida International-Western Kentucky (54) looked like a certain under, with FIU up 28-3 heading to the fourth quarter. However, Western scored a touchdown and two-point conversion with 1:55 left to make it 48. Still, it should have ended up under, but D'Vonte Price for FIU ripped off a 58-yard touchdown just 20 seconds after the onside kick attempt, turning a sure under into a losing ticket.

-- Going back to Thursday's Sun Belt (Fun Belt!) action, the rawest bad beat of the weekend happened in Statesboro, Ga. Georgia Southern was routing Appalachian State 34-7, scoring a TD with 3:28 to go in regulation. The 'under' (47.5) looked to be in good shape, but the Mountaineers scored with just :10 left to push the total over.

        4th Quarter Covers - Week 9
        Joe Nelson

Glancing at the scoreboard won’t tell you the whole story in most games. Here are some of the games that went down to the wire relative to the spread in the fourth quarter last week in the ninth big college football weekend to close October.

Each week there are several teams that cover despite not necessarily deserving it, as well as other teams that played much better than the final score shows.

        Minnesota (+2½) 38, Indiana 31:
Off to a 0-4 Big Ten start after a 3-0 non-conference run, Minnesota played behind backup quarterback Tanner Morgan with strong results, leading 21-9 at halftime and extending that lead to 31-9 through three quarters as the underdog cover seemed all but certain. The Hoosiers hit a big play early in the fourth to cut the margin to 31-15, failing going for two and Minnesota followed with a fumble to hand Indiana good field position. Six plays later the Hoosiers were within a single-score getting a touchdown and the two-point conversion to trail 31-23 with still 10 minutes remaining. The quarterbacks traded interceptions and Minnesota had to punt in rainy conditions to give Indiana the ball back near midfield with about seven minutes remaining. Peyton Ramsey led the touchdown drive and with another successful two-point conversion, the game was tied with about four minutes to go. Minnesota again had a 3-and-out with all the momentum in favor of Indiana but the Hoosiers opted to run three times despite the success in the passing game and didn’t pick up a first down. Minnesota got the ball back with fewer than two minutes on the clock and took a shot on 1st down, connecting for a 67-yard touchdown. Ramsey was sacked on 1st down with Minnesota recovering a fumble to seal the win despite the wild fourth quarter collapse.

        Pittsburgh (+2½) 54, Duke 45:
Duke led 21-10 late in the second quarter before Pittsburgh connected for a 50-yard touchdown pass to climb within four at halftime. Duke led by seven through three quarters before the game was tied. Duke settled for a short field goal with eight minutes remaining to lead by three but Pittsburgh used a nice kickoff return to tie the game with a 48-yard field goal with just over two minutes remaining. Duke was forced to punt and the Panthers managed to score with just five seconds remaining. It didn’t impact the outcome but the Panthers added two points with a safety after a Duke fumble on the final kickoff trying to set-up a miracle return with a lateral.

        Massachusetts (-3½) 22, Connecticut 17:
This line opened as high as -6 but came down steadily throughout the week. A pair of northeastern squads desperate for a win faced off with a surprisingly low scoring first half with just 10 points. Connecticut led 14-9 through three quarters and extended the advantage to 17-9 in the fourth. Massachusetts hit a 67-yard touchdown to climb within two, failing going for two and the tie. Massachusetts forced a 3-and-out on defense and then went 81 yards on its next possession to take a five-point edge which held for the final margin.

        Coastal Carolina (-2½) 37, Georgia State 34:
The Chanticleers were favored by -3½ or -3 much of the week before sliding to -2½ by kickoff. It didn’t seem likely to matter with a 17-0 start for Coastal Carolina. Georgia State made a rally with three third quarter touchdowns to lead 34-27 but Coastal Carolina regrouped in the fourth to tie the game early in the final quarter with a 12-play touchdown drive. Coastal Carolina got the ball back in good field position and after reaching the 5-yard-line settled for a short field goal to lead by just three. Georgia State threatened to extend the game reaching the 36-yard-line but fell short going for it on 4th down.

        Oregon State (+26) 41, Colorado 34:
When a nearly four-touchdown underdog wins outright there generally isn’t against-the-spread drama but Colorado led 31-3 early in the third quarter of this game to sit past the heavy favorite spread. The Beavers didn’t mail it in however and had climbed to within 14 by the first minute of the fourth quarter. Up 14 Colorado opted to go for it on 4th-and-1 just across midfield on its next possession and came up short and Oregon State added a field goal and an eight-point touchdown to suddenly sit within three with seven minutes to go. Colorado reached the Oregon State 10-yard-line before a holding penalty and settled for a field goal to lead by six, allowing Oregon State to seemingly win the game with a touchdown in the final minute. The extra-point was blocked however in a stunning finish. Colorado picked up 39 yards in the final seconds to get off a 53-yard field goal attempt but the kick missed an overtime was needed. The Beavers went first and delivered seven and Colorado was unable to match it.

        Arizona State (+3) 38, USC 35:
USC trailed by 10 at halftime behind Jack Sears but the Trojans scored two touchdowns in 25 seconds of game clock early in the third quarter. Late in the third Arizona State delivered a 92-yard punt return touchdown to lead by three before a tense final quarter. USC opted to go for it on 4th-and-1 from the Arizona State 20-yard-line with about 10 minutes remaining but the Sun Devils got the stop. After a pair of punts Arizona State put the game away with quarterback Manny Wilkins scrambling for a 45-yard touchdown run in the final two minutes. USC would score in the final seconds to close within three but didn’t get the on-side kick attempt.

        Georgia (-7) 36, Florida 17:
Florida dug a hole with early turnovers in the big SEC East matchup but only trailed by six at halftime. The Gators briefly took the lead in the second half but Georgia added nine points to lead 23-14 through three quarters with the field goal for Georgia coming after a Florida fumble at its own 1-yard-line as Georgia had a 3-0 turnover edge in the game. Florida added a field goal in the fourth to sit within the number down by six but the Bulldogs turned in two late touchdown drives to win by 19 points.

        Kentucky (+7½) 15, Missouri 14:
Missouri led 14-3 through three quarters and appeared to get the stop of the game holding Kentucky on 4th-and-short from the 3-yard-line halfway through the fourth quarter to hold the 11-point edge for the home favorite. Missouri looked to burn some clock with the lead and the limited Kentucky offense, running the ball three times before punting but the Wildcats got back in the game with a 67-yard punt return touchdown. Kentucky went for two and failed but was within the number down five. Kentucky would get the ball back with just over four minutes remaining but had an interception taking a deep shot. Missouri only was able to burn a minute of clock and had an incomplete pass to stop the clock on 3rd-and-2. Kentucky was punned at its own 19 with just over a minute remaining and took a sack on 1st down. The Wildcats were able to get down the field and eventually wound up with an untimed down from the 2-yard-line after a pass interference call. Terry Wilson hit C.J. Conrad for the winning score.

        Houston (-10) 57, South Florida 36:
The big AAC showdown lived up to its billing with a back-and-forth affair. Houston led 28-21 at halftime but South Florida got five points early in the third quarter with a safety and a short field goal to climb within two on a spread that climbed from +7½ to +10. 21 points were exchanged in the rest of the third quarter as Houston led 43-36 heading into the fourth. Houston would pull away in the final frame with two touchdowns while South Florida had two fourth quarter turnovers as the Cougars escaped with the cover in a game with 1,149 total yards.

        Penn State (-5) 30, Iowa 24:
The line on this game was near -6 most of the week but hit -6½ and -5½ at times before landing at -5. The underdog was promising as Iowa took a 12-0 early lead but Penn State battled back to reach a 17-17 tie by halftime. Penn State took over in the third quarter with a 51-yard run from Trace McSorley and a long field goal for a 10-point advantage. Iowa got the break it needed to get back in the game with a pick-6 in the fourth quarter to trail by three but a long kickoff return put Penn State in business to extend its lead though the Lions ultimately settled for a short field goal to lead by six, right on the number for many. Iowa reached the Penn State 3-yard-line on its next possession but Nate Stanley was intercepted on 1st-and-goal. The Hawkeyes got a final opportunity and went 48 yards in the final minute but stalled just across midfield and ran out of time.

        Iowa State (-6) 40, Texas Tech 31:
The spread on the Cyclones climbed from -3½ to -6 and it looked like it might matter as a Texas Tech tied the game in the fourth quarter with a fumble recovery touchdown. The Cyclones got an interception later in the fourth quarter to keep the game tied and then after pinning Texas Tech deep, Iowa State took the lead with a safety. The 33-31 edge wasn’t enough to cover but Iowa State hit a 48-yard touchdown pass with just over two minutes to go to lead by nine and then intercepted Alan Bowman again in Iowa State territory to hang on to the win and cover in a key Big XII game.

        UAB (-15½) 19, UTEP 0:
The winless Miners attracted some attention as this spread fell from opening at -17½. UTAB led 10-0 in the first quarter but did not score again until a third quarter safety and the Blazers led just 12-0 well into the fourth quarter. UTEP missed a field goal in late in the third but wasn’t a significant scoring threat and with four minutes remaining UAB snuck past the spread with a late touchdown.

        Washington State (+3) 41, Stanford 38:
Perfect ATS this season, Washington State was dogged at Stanford and trailed by 11 at halftime and by seven through three quarters. Washington State tied the game early in the fourth and then stopped Stanford going for it on 4th down in long field goal range with nine minutes remaining. Washington State converted a similar 4th down try on its next possession and eventually found the end zone to go up by seven with four minutes to go. Stanford answered and tied the game with more than a minute remaining but Washington State did enough to hit a 42-yard field goal to take a three-point lead. Stanford reached midfield in the final seconds but ran out of time as the Cougars took the Pac-12 North lead.

        Tulane (-2) 24, Tulsa 17:
Tulsa never trailed in this game until the final score but was unable to pull away despite having a 10-point lead in the second half. Tulane tied the game with 12 minutes to go and then Tulsa fumbled halfway through the fourth quarter in Tulane territory. Quarterback Justin McMillan broke free for a 39-yard touchdown run with fewer than four minutes to go to give Tulane its first lead in the game and Tulsa was unable to answer, going backwards after reaching Tulane territory on its final drive.

        UL-Lafayette (+3) 47, Arkansas State 43:
UL-Lafayette never trailed in the first three quarters but Arkansas State hit a 73-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth to move in front 35-34. UL-Lafayette answered quickly but Arkansas State would respond as well, making its two-point conversion to go up three after the Ragin’ Cajuns were unable to get its own conversion attempt on the previous score. UL-Lafayette burned nearly five minutes in 11 plays before turning in the game-winning touchdown with just over a minute to go.

        Boise State (-10) 48, Air Force 38:
These Mountain West foes were tied at halftime before Boise State pulled ahead by 10 early in the fourth quarter. Air Force cut the margin to three with five minutes to go but the Broncos responded with a 61-yard touchdown pass to close right on the number with a 10-point win.

        Mississippi State (-1) 28, Texas A&M 13:
There were many possible outcomes with the Bulldogs leading by one through three quarters with the spread on this game bouncing around before kickoff. Mississippi State went up by eight early in the fourth quarter and with just over two minutes remaining sealed the win with an interception in the end zone to hold A&M off the board. Two plays later the Bulldogs got a long run from Nick Fitzgerald to pad the final margin.

        Notre Dame (-22½) 44, Navy 22:
Notre Dame led 27-0 at halftime but Navy put forth a good effort in the second half to put up 22 points, climbing to within two scores early in the fourth quarter with a two-point conversion successful. The Irish answered to lead by 22 while Navy turned it over in Notre Dame territory on its next two possessions. Notre Dame didn’t add points as Navy barely held on with an underdog spread that dipped from 24 to 22½.

LSU's odds improve slightly for college football clash vs. big fave Alabama
                Patrick Everson

Tua Tagovailoa's unbeaten and top-ranked Alabama squad opened as a hefty 15-point road favorite at No. 4 LSU. However, a little early action on the Tigers tightened that number a tick to 14

The highly anticipated, hotly debated College Football Playoff rankings debut on Tuesday night, followed at the end of the week by some matchups that will be key to future CFP releases. We check in on the opening lines and early action on four Week 10 tilts, with insights from Cameron Coombs, supervisor at The SuperBook at Westgate.

No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide at No. 4 Louisiana State Tigers (+15)

Despite playing on the road against a top-five outfit, Alabama is a huge favorite for this Saturday night SEC showdown. The Crimson Tide (8-0 SU, 5-3 ATS) have beaten all their foes by at least 22 points, including a 58-21 shellacking of Tennessee as 29.5-point road favorites in Week 8. Alabama had a bye in Week 9.

Louisiana State stumbled in Week 6 at Florida, but rebounded on its home field by upsetting Georgia in Week 7. In Week 8, the Tigers (7-1 SU, 5-3 ATS) posted a 19-3 victory over Mississippi State as 5-point home faves. Like Alabama, LSU had a bye in Week 9.

“We have not received much action on this so far. The line has steamed down a little bit,” Coombs said. “I think it’s due to the big matchup. As the week goes on, I assume we will see a lot of Alabama money, as we do every week. Who knows, maybe the Alabama quarterback (Tua Tagovailoa) will play past the first half.”

No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs at No. 12 Kentucky Wildcats (+9.5)

Georgia had a bye in Week 8 to regroup after its upset loss at LSU, then got a key neutral-site win in Week 9. The Bulldogs (7-1 SU, 4-4 ATS) went to Jacksonville as 7-point favorites against Florida and left with a 36-17 victory.

Kentucky is certainly one of the surprise teams of the season and still controls its own destiny in the SEC East. The Wildcats’ only loss was at Texas A&M in overtime in Week 6. In Week 9, Kentucky (7-1 SU, 4-4 ATS) got a TD on the final play of the game for a 15-14 victory at Missouri catching 7.5 points.

“This line hasn’t moved at all, and we have seen any significant wagers on it,” Coombs said. “I want to see how Georgia comes out and plays. The Bulldogs’ game against Florida was much closer than what the scoreboard said.”

No. 13 Penn State Nittany Lions at No. 5 Michigan Wolverines (-10)

Michigan is running perfect since its Week 1 loss at Notre Dame. The Wolverines (7-1 SU, 5-3 ATS) enter this Big 10 showdown off a bye week, after dumping Michigan State 21-7 giving 7.5 points on the road in Week 8.

Penn State soiled its season with back-to-back home losses, blowing a big fourth-quarter lead against Ohio State and giving up a last-minute TD against Michigan State. The Nittany Lions (6-2 SU, 5-3 ATS) followed with a pair of close wins, edging Iowa 30-24 as 5.5-point home favorites in Week 9.

“Both of Penn State’s losses have been close games, and with Michigan’s defense, I think this will be a close game,” Coombs said. “Throughout the week, I could see the spread dropping.”

No. 3 Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Northwestern Wildcats (+8)

Notre Dame is right in the thick of the four-team CFP chase, riding a perfect record into Week 10. The Fighting Irish (8-0 SU, 5-3 ATS) rumbled over Navy 44-22 in Week 9, narrowly cashing as 21.5-point faves in a neutral-site game in San Diego.

Northwestern followed a three-game losing streak by winning four in a row. In Week 9, the Wildcats (5-3 SU, 4-3-1 ATS) built a 31-10 lead against visiting Wisconsin and coasted to a 31-17 victory catching 3.5 points at home.

“This is a game we have received some money on. We took a sharp bet at -8, and the line has steamed up since,” Coombs said of action that took the Fighting Irish from -8 to -9.5. “I think the line will continue to go up. Notre Dame is a powerhouse this year, and I’m not sure Northwestern will be able to keep up with the Irish.”

                  SEMINOLES TAKE HIT

Discipline issues have forced the Florida State Seminoles to be without their top receiving option for the first half of their Saturday afternoon matchup with host N.C. State. Senior wide receiver Nyqwan Murray has been suspended for the opening two quarters against the Wolfpack after throwing punches during last week's loss to Clemson. Florida State head coach Willie Taggart was blunt in his assessment of Murray's actions, calling him "mentally weak." Murray has had a sensational season to date, racking up 40 catches for 536 yards and four touchdowns in eight games.

With Murray out of the lineup, the Wolfpack look like a solid choice to cover both the first-quarter and first-half spreads. N.C. State is also a strong play at -7 on the full-game spread.

                  DUCKS’ WINGS GET CLIPPED

The Oregon Ducks could be in a whole heap of trouble on the offensive side of the ball this weekend against visiting UCLA. Junior quarterback Justin Herbert missed practice Tuesday as he recovers from a concussion suffered in last weekend's game against the Arizona Wildcats. He was placed in the concussion protocol after the game despite not being removed from the 44-15 loss. Herbert has had an up-and-down campaign in his third year at the helm of the Ducks' offense, completing just 59.6 percent of his passes for 2,069 yards with 20 touchdowns and six interceptions in eight games.

Oddsmakers are bracing for Herbert's absence, dropping the line from Oregon -13 all the way down to -7.5. We recommend jumping on the Bruins at this number, which will likely shrink even further if Herbert doesn't show progress in his recovery.

                      WHO’S UNDER CENTER FOR UCLA?

There's some mystery surrounding who will be under center for UCLA this weekend as the Bruins face off against the host Oregon Ducks. Senior Wilton Speight practiced with the starting unit Wednesday after getting the start in place of the injured Dorian Thompson-Robinson last week. But Thompson-Robinson returned to practice Tuesday, leaving both players' status for the Oregon game in doubt. Thompson-Robinson has thrown for 1,176 yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions, while Speight has 413 passing yards with two TDs and three INTs.

The uncertainty surrounding UCLA's QB situation, combined with Oregon's Justin Herbert returning to practice as he continues his recovery from a concussion, puts the betting focus back on the Ducks. This line dropped from Oregon -13 to -8.5 with word that Herbert might miss the game, so now is the time to consider backing the hosts.

                      MARSHALL THE MAN FOR G-TECH

TaQuon Marshall is ready to return to the Georgia Tech lineup for this Saturday's encounter with rival North Carolina. Head coach Paul Johnson says Marshall will be the starting quarterback for this weekend's game after missing last week's 49-28 win over Virginia Tech with an upper-body injury. Freshman Tobias Oliver filled in, and promptly ran for 215 yards and three scores in the one-sided victory, earning conference Rookie of the Week honors. Oliver and Marshall rank first and second on the team in rushing yards and have combined for 19 scores on the ground.

The return of Marshall will enhance the Yellow Jackets' triple-option attack sufficiently to make the over on their team total an attractive option. With the favorite having gone 4-1 ATS in the last five games of the series, bettors might also want to consider the Yellow Jackets to cover at -6.

                      NO HARNESS ON HENDERSON

Memphis' electrifying running back will have no limitations when he hits the gridiron this weekend against East Carolina. Darrell Henderson aggravated a leg injury early in the Tigers' 65-33 loss to Missouri on Oct. 20, finishing with just four carries for 15 yards. Head coach Mike Norvell says Henderson won't be on a snap count against ECU as he looks to reach the 100-yard plateau for the sixth time in nine games. The junior standout ranks second in the nation in rushing yards with 1,155, just seven behind Wisconsin Badgers star Jonathan Taylor.

With the Tigers favored by nearly two touchdowns and Henderson averaging an absurd 10.1 yards per carry on the season, taking a Memphis touchdown as the first scoring play is a decent option at +120.

                        POINTS AT A PREMIUM

You don't often see Division I college football games with totals south of 40 – but that's in the offing Thursday night as Northern Illinois visits Akron in MAC action. The host Zips have had all sorts of problems scoring points this season, particularly in the early going: they're averaging just four first-quarter points per game against FBS opponents, ranking outside the top 100 nationally. But the visiting Huskies have it even worse: They've managed just two first-quarter points per contest in 2018, ranking 126th out of 130 qualifying Division I schools.

Given both teams' first-quarter struggles, we recommend taking the under on the first-quarter total of 7 (-110). And if you're feeling particularly brave, you could opt for the Zips to win the opening quarter to nil (+500).

                        BRONCOS TURN TO ELEBY

Western Michigan will have a new starting quarterback for its Thursday night encounter with visiting Ohio. Freshman Kaleb Eleby will take his turn under center after the Broncos lost regular No. 1 Jon Wassink to an ankle injury in last week's 51-24 drubbing at the hands of Toledo. Eleby fared well (23-for-28, 293 yards, two TDs) but was sacked five times; Western Michigan had allowed just four total sacks in its previous eight games. Ohio ranks below average in sacks per game (1.88) and sits 125th overall in passing yards allowed per game (292.4).

WMU is a three-point underdog against the Bobcats but shouldn't see any dip in production moving from Wassink to Eleby given Ohio's poor pass rush and even worse overall pass defense. We suggest taking the home team to not only cover, but to surpass its team total of 30.5 (-110).

                        CAN TEMPLE TOPPLE UCF?

If there's a team on Central Florida's schedule that could cause the Knights a whole heap of problems, it's the Temple Owls, who visit Spectrum Stadium for a pivotal Thursday night encounter. UCF's 20-game winning streak will be on the line, and the Knights will look to continue their incredible run of success – particularly in the red zone, where their 90-percent conversion ranks 23rd in the country. But they could have their hands full against a stout Temple defense that has limited opponents to just 13 touchdowns and four field goals in 26 red-zone opportunities.

Even a slight downturn in UCF's red-zone proficiency will compromise both their ability to cover the -10.5 spread and their chances of surpassing their 37.5-point team total (-110). Also, worth considering: The Owls are a sensational 22-5 ATS in their last 27 conference games.

                        MILTON A GAME-TIME DECISION

To make matters worse for UCF and its backers, starting quarterback McKenzie Milton will be a "game-time" decision according to head coach Josh Heupel. Milton dressed but didn’t play due to an undisclosed injury in UCF’s 37-10 win over East Carolina two weeks ago, in a game the Knights (-21.5) were able to cover without their star signal caller.

Backup Darriel Mack Jr. played in place of Milton and threw for just 69 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions on 12-of-20 passing. The Knights leaned heavily on the ground game in Milton’s absence, totalling 55 carries for 316 yards (5.7 yards per rush) and two touchdowns. Temple’s weakness on defense is against the run, ranking 91st in the country in that category.

                        OLIVER GOOD TO GO

The Houston Cougars might have their best defensive player back in the fold for Saturday's game against Southern Methodist. Defensive tackle Ed Oliver missed last week's 57-36 victory over South Florida with a knee injury but was reportedly close to playing. He's considered day-to-day but is trending upward for this weekend's showdown with the Mustangs. Oliver is widely expected to be a first-round pick in next year's NFL draft; the Houston native has had a sensational season to date, with 51 tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble.

If Oliver returns as expected, bettors should downgrade their expectations for the SMU offense; look at the under on their 27.5-point team total (-110) if he's back in the fold.

                          RED ZONE REVOLUTION

The Pitt Panthers haven't exactly been a force in the red zone so far this season – but that might change Friday night as they visit the Virginia Cavaliers in an ACC showdown. The Panthers come into the game with one of the worst scoring rates inside the opponents' 20-yard line of any team in the nation, turning 23 red-zone visits into 15 touchdowns and three field goals. But the TD rate is actually decent compared to the rest of Division I – and things are set up to turn around for the Panthers against a Cavaliers defense that has given up points on 16 of its opponents' 17 voyages into the red zone.

Virginia is a seven-point favorite for Friday's game, but the Cavs' red-zone struggles combined with Pitt having averaged better than 37 points over its last three games makes the road team a decent cover option here.

The Arizona Wildcats have had their share of ups and downs this season, but their first-quarter defense – particularly at home – remains one of the best of the nation entering Friday's meeting with the visiting Colorado Buffaloes. The Wildcats have faced four Division I opponents at Arizona Stadium (BYU, USC, California, Oregon) and have allowed only seven points on a Trojans touchdown and conversion in their Sept. 29 encounter. Colorado, meanwhile, might be without the services of top receiving threat Leviska Shenault, who has missed the previous two games with a toe injury.

Whether Shenault plays or sits, the Wildcats have been sensational enough in the early stages of home games to make the under on Colorado's first-quarter total of 6.5 (-110) the recommended option. If you're looking for an even better payout, take Arizona to win the first quarter at nil, which pays +250.

                          PRIMED FOR PICK 6

Middle Tennessee State has proven capable of scoring on both sides of the football as it prepares to host Western Kentucky in a Friday night Conference USA encounter. The Blue Raiders not only sit third in the conference in interceptions with nine, they also lead C-USA with three interception returns for touchdowns. And that bodes well for MTSU Friday night, as they'll host a Hilltoppers team that has thrown just 10 touchdown passes against six interceptions. With the host Blue Raiders favored by nearly two touchdowns, WKU will need to throw a lot – and that plays right into MTSU's hands.

Bettors should consider the defensive/special teams touchdown here, which pays out at +150.

                          BACKFIELD REINFORCEMENTS FOR AZTECS

The San Diego State backfield is about to be a lot more robust, with two key players returning to the fold. Running back Juwan Washington will return to action for the first time since suffering a fractured collarbone in a Sept. 22 victory over Eastern Michigan. Washington is one of the top rushing threats in the nation, with 513 yards and five touchdowns through parts of four games. He won't start Saturday against New Mexico – Chase Jasmin will assume that role – but should see carries. Fullback Isaac Lessard (neck) will also return to the lineup, though he won't start, either.

SDSU should use its potent rush attack to punish a Lobos team that ranks eighth in the 12-team Mountain West in rushing yards allowed per game (171.5) and tied for second in rushing scores allowed (17). The Aztecs are a good play both against the spread (-10) and on the over for their team total of 28.5 (-110).

                            Alabama at LSU
                            Brian Edwards

Alabama (8-0 straight up, 5-3 against the spread) is ranked No. 1 in the newest College Football Rankings and that title is certainly well deserved. Nick Saban’s team has won all eight of its games by at least 22 points. The Crimson Tide has been so dominant that its star QB Tua Tagovailoa hasn’t taken a snap in the fourth quarter all season.

On paper and by just about anyone’s eye test, this squad appears to be Saban’s best and one of the most dominant in college football history. But nobody earns the latter honor through only eight games. In fact, this team can’t even claim the former billing unless it wins the CFP. So obviously, Alabama still has plenty of work to do.

With that said, let’s take a moment to consider what this club has accomplished to date. For gamblers who have backed the Tide in the first quarter and the first half, in addition to taking its team total ‘over’ in the first quarter, first half and for the game, those bettors have cashed tickets at an insane 36-3-1 clip.

For those gamblers who regularly read my weekly SEC Notebook, you’re freakin’ welcome since I’ve been pointing you toward this sequence of bets since Week 3! When I write my SEC content on Friday, the lines for the first quarter and the teams totals in the first quarter and first half usually aren’t available yet.

As I write this on Friday afternoon, we do have a first-half line already as ‘Bama is a 7.5-point favorite with a total of 27.5. We also have a team total for the game (34.5 pts. for the Tide; LSU’s is 19.5). Most books have Alabama installed as a 14.5-point favorite (we’re talking about the game now) with a total of 53.5. The Tigers are anywhere from +450 to +500 on the money line.

Tagovailoa is a monster -400 ‘chalk’ to win the Heisman Trophy at Sportsbook.ag. He has 25 TD passes without an interception, in addition to a pair of rushing scores. The true sophomore QB has connected on 70.4 percent of his passes for 2,066 yards.

Najee Harris has run for a team-best 489 yards and four TDs with a 6.3 yards-per-carry average. Damien Harris has 435 rushing yards and five TDs while averaging 6.4 YPC.

Jerry Jeudy reminds me of former Florida Gator WRs Jack Jackson and Jacquez Green. He has lightning-fast speed and an incredibly quick burst. Jeudy has 31 receptions for 777 yards and 10 TDs, while Jaylen Waddle has 21 catches for 457 yards and three TDs. Henry Ruggs has caught 24 balls for 444 yards and a team-best seven TDs. Devonta Smith, who was upgraded to ‘probable' on Friday, has 21 grabs for 409 yards and three TDs.

Since giving up backdoor covers in three straight games, Alabama has covered the number in back-to-back outings vs. Missouri (39-10) and at Tennessee (58-21). Tagovailoa threw for 306 yards and four TDs against the Vols, while Josh Jacobs ran for 68 yards and two scores on 12 carries.

LSU (7-1 SU, ATS) will be without its best player in junior LB Devin White for the first half. White was flagged for a shaky targeting penalty in the second half of his team’s 19-3 win over Mississippi State two weeks ago. The enormity of his absence for the first 30 minutes can’t be overstated. White was a second-team All-American last season and is en route to garnering first-team honors in 2018. He has recorded 76 tackles, six TFL’s, one sack, six QB hurries, four PBU, one forced fumble and one fumble return for 29 yards.

LSU has notable wins over Miami (33-17 at Jerry World), at Auburn (22-21 on a walk-off FG), vs. La. Tech (38-21), vs. Ole Miss (45-16), vs. UGA (36-16) and vs. MSU (19-3). The Tigers took their lone defeat at Florida by a 27-19 score.

LSU intercepted Mississippi State QB Nick Fitzgerald four times at Tiger Stadium two weeks ago. Grant Delpit had a pair of picks, Nick Brossette scored on a one-yard TD run and Cole Tracy buried four FGs against the Bulldogs.

The difference for LSU this season has been the timely play of Ohio State grad transfer QB Joe Burrow, who doesn’t have the cleanest stats but has been money at crunch time. Burrow has run for 250 yards and four TDs and wasn’t intercepted for the first time until Week 6.

Brossette has rushed for a team-high 697 yards and 10 TDs, averaging 4.6 yards per carry. Clyde Edwards-Helaire has run for 521 yards and five TDs with a 5.0 YPC average. WR Justin Jefferson has 30 receptions for 471 yards and two TDs.

Since Ed Orgeron replaced Les Miles as head coach, he has compiled a 15-4 spread record in 19 SEC games. Oregon owns an 11-1 spread record in his past 12 SEC contests. As a home underdog on his watch, LSU is 2-1 both SU and ATS.

Since LSU won a 9-6 overtime decision at Alabama in 2011, the Crimson Tide has won seven games in a row over the Tigers while going 5-2 ATS. The past three wins and four of the last five have come by double-digit margins.

When these bitter rivals squared off in Tuscaloosa last season, Alabama won by a 24-10 count but LSU took the cash as a 20.5-point road underdog. The 44 combined points slithered ‘under’ the 45-point tally. QB Jalen Hurts, who is ‘questionable’ Saturday night due to a sprained ankle, threw one TD pass and ran for another score.

This rivalry has seen the ‘under’ hit in four straight games and nine of the past 10. The ‘under’ is on a 5-0 run when the game is played in Baton Rouge. The favorite is 4-1 ATS in the past five head-to-head meetings.

The ‘over’ is 6-2 overall for ‘Bama this season, 2-1 in its three road contests. Both ‘unders’ came when the total was in the 70s. In fact, both totals were the highest we’ve seen in Alabama football history. The Tide’s games have averaged combined scores of 70.0 PPG.

The ‘over’ is 5-3 overall for LSU, 3-2 in its home games. The ‘over’ had hit in four consecutive outings for the Tigers until their win over MSU fell way below the 45.5-point total. LSU’s games have averaged combined scores of 45.5 PPG.

CBS will provide the broadcast at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.

The Triple Option: College football Week 10 picks and predictions
                              Andrew Caley

Halloween is over. The calendar has flipped to November. That means a few things. The fun part of fall is has come to an end, and the two-month stress fueled build up to Christmas is upon us.

I am legitimately shocked about how fast my house transforms from the oranges and browns of October to the halls being decked out with Christmas trimmings. Now don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas as much as anyone and I can’t wait to watch Jingle All The Way multiple times in a few weeks, but it is too god damned early to be hearing Christmas songs and for the lady to be bugging me about when the lights can go up.

Thank goodness I’m a bit of a traditionalist and require a real tree, or there might be one standing up in my living room already. But the main point of this is we can’t get ahead of ourselves, whether its Christmas or college football.

Because the Christmas switch getting flipped means something else: Another college football season is flying by. It’s already Week 10, which means the College Football Playoff (still hate that name) selection committee gave us our first look at the initial CFP rankings and there were no surprises.

Alabama, of course led the way, followed by Clemson, then LSU at No. 3 and Notre Dame rounded out the top 4. But an interesting stat surfaced this week. The No. 3 ranked team in the initial rankings have never made the Playoff in the four previous seasons of this process. And I’m sorry Tigers fans, the way things are set up, it might happen again.

Oddsmakers certainly think they’re still a long shot to make it to the CFP, at least in terms of the Tigers national championship odds. LSU’s odds are also a little perilous at 40/1. Here’s what the Top 4 would look like according to the Superbook at Westgate in terms of national title odds:

                              * 1: Alabama 2/5
                              * 2: Clemson 7/2
                              * 3: Notre Dame 6/1
                              * T-4: Ohio State 12/1
                              * T-4: Michigan 12/1
                              * T-4: Georgia 12/1

But first and foremost, the biggest reason LSU is a longshot to make the CFP, is staring it right in the face this weekend. Alabama. The No. 1 ranked Crimson Tide head to Death Valley Tide for a huge SEC matchup where they are currently two-touchdown faves.

Two touchdowns may seem like a lot considering the Tigers are the third ranked team in the country, have an elite defense, have played the tougher schedule and are at home. Well, that’s just how impressive the Tide and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa have been this season.

Tagovailoa, the runaway Heisman favorite, has thrown for 2,066 yards on 70.4 percent passing with 25 touchdowns and no interceptions and he still hasn’t played a fourth quarter yet this season. He is special and a true difference maker. While the Tigers have Joe Burrow, who is a game manager at best.

And don’t give me the “Tagovailoa hasn’t faced the pressure he will in Death Valley” argument. He came into the national championship at halftime, down 13-0, and just led the Tide to one of the most exciting comeback victories in recent memory.

Alabama won’t only dash LSU’s CFP hopes this weekend (no two-loss team has qualified for the CFP so far). They’ll cover the spread as well. I’m going to play it a little safe though and buy a half-point.

                              Pick:
                              Alabama -13.5

West Virginia Mountaineers at Texas Longhorns (-2, 58)

Everyone knows not to fade Todd Herman when he’s an underdog. Luckily, for us Texas is a slight home favorite for this week’s matchup with West Virginia.

Texas has struggled since its impressive win over Oklahoma. It followed that victory up by having to tough out a 6-point win over Baylor as 14-point home favorites and lost outright at Oklahoma State last week 38-35 as 2.5-point road faves.

West Virginia meanwhile, followed up its disappointing loss to Iowa State by beating the snot out of Baylor 58-14 as 14.5-point faves and it matches up very well against Texas. The Mountaineers are one of the best passing teams in the nation behind senior quarterback Will Grier, while the Longhorns rank 90th against the pass. Grier has passed for 2,272 with 25 touchdowns compared to just seven interceptions on 70.3 percent passing.

While both teams still have a shot at the Big 12 title, only West Virginia still has a shot at the CFP and Grier has too many weapons for the Longhorns to handle. The Mountaineers won’t just cover but win outright.

                              Pick:
                              West Virginia +2

Penn State Nittany Lions at Michigan Wolverines (-12, 52.5)

Michigan definitely has a shot at the CFP if it can win out and claim a Big Ten title, but just like everyone else a second loss can dash those hopes in a hurry.

There’s no doubting the awesomeness of the Wolverines defense. They rank sixth in points allowed per game and first in total and passing yards. However, Trace McSorely is the most talented quarterback they have gone up against this year and Penn State is probably a little better than its record suggests.

After a gut-punch of a loss to Ohio State, the Nittany Lions dropped its second in a row in an obvious letdown spot against Michigan State. But James Franklin should have his team up for this matchup with Michigan.

While the Wolverines defense is great, the other side of the ball has been a little more of a question mark. The biggest being whether Shea Patterson step up in a big game?

This matchup is much closer than 12-points.

                              Pick:
                              Penn State +12

                              Last week: 2-1
                              Season to date: 15-12

Calgary may still have the best record in the CFL, but it heads into the final week of the regular season on a straight-up three-game losing streak after falling to Winnipeg 29-21 on Friday night as a 3 ½-point road underdog.

In the first of two Saturday games, Ottawa tripped up Hamilton 3013 as a 4 ½-point road underdog to sweep the home-and-home series while also locking up the East Division title. Saskatchewan remained in the hunt for the division title in the West with a 35-16 victory against British Columbia as a 4 ½-point home favorite.

Week 20 wrapped things up on Sunday with Montreal playing its best game of the season in a 40-10 victory against Toronto as a rare three-point home favorite.

                                Saturday, Nov. 3

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (10-7 SU, 10-6-1 ATS) at Edmonton Eskimos (8-9 SU, 7-10 ATS)

                                Point-spread: Edmonton -5
                                Total: 55

                                Game Overview

The Blue Bombers eliminated Edmonton from the playoffs with Friday’s win against Calgary. They also extended their current winning streak to five games both SU and ATS with the total staying UNDER in four of the five victories. Matt Nichols played one of his best games of the season at just the right time with 358 yards passing and two scoring strikes against the Stampeders.

Coming off a Week 20 bye, the Eskimos can point to a 1-4 slide both SU and ATS in their previous five games as the main reason why their season will come to an end after this game. They could also point to an offense that ran out of steam down the stretch with 15 points or less in three of its last five contests. Mike Reilly still leads the CFL in total passing yards (5,242).

                                Betting Trends

-- The first two games of this season series was split with the road team winning SU. Winnipeg covered in both contests as part of a 4-1 record ATS in its last five games against the Eskimos. The total has stayed UNDER in the last five meetings in Edmonton.

Montreal Alouettes (4-13 SU, 10-7 ATS) at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (8-9 SU, 7-9-1 ATS)
                                Point-spread: Hamilton -6
                                Total: 53

                                Game Overview

Alouettes’ fans have to be happy that another dismal season finally comes to an end. Other than this Sunday’s win, it has been a very hard campaign to endure with an offense that has averaged 18.5 points per game. With three different players under center on Sunday, Montreal gained 246 yards through the air to complement a ground game that racked up 180 yards on 24 carries.

The Tiger-Cats cannot be all too happy with 2-4 (SU and ATS) slide in their last six games, but they can still rest their starters if they want ahead of next week’s home game in the first round of the playoffs. The total stayed UNDER 53 ½ points in Saturday’s loss to Ottawa after going OVER or ending as a PUSH in Hamilton’s previous seven games. It went OVER 50 ½ points in a 50-11 road win against Montreal as a seven-point favorite on Aug. 3.

                                Game Overview

A second-straight season-ending collapse has bettors questioning the value in betting with the Stampeders as the top team in the league. After losing their final three games last season (SU and ATS), they are 0-3 SU in their last three outings this time around with a costly 2-6 mark ATS over their last eight games. They still need to win on Saturday to win the West and earn a first round bye.

The Lions’ loss to Saskatchewan on Saturday snapped a SU three-game winning streak. After failing to cover in that game, they are 2-3 ATS in their last five games. The total ended as a PUSH on a closing line of 51 points and it has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in 10 of BC’s last 12 games. Travis Lulay turned in a dismal performance on Saturday with 94 yards passing and two interceptions while completing just nine of his 20 passing attempts.

-- The Stampeders have won eight of the last 10 meetings SU, but this season’s series has been evenly split SU with each team winning once in Calgary. The Lions covered in both games with the total staying UNDER each time as well.
