                      Gus Augustine

Buffalo entered last Tuesday's home game against Miami-Ohio with the #1 rated defense in the MAC and they are as high as #31 in the nation in total defense, so expect them to make-up for the fact they allowed 42 points to be scored on them last week at home in this game against Kent State.

The Golden Flashes managed their biggest offensive output since September when they scored 35 points in last week's road win at Bowling Green, yet the game still held Under the total.

Kent has played 4 in a row this year Under the total, and the Under for the season is 6-3 in Kent's games.

Buffalo did soar Over last week against Miami-O, but they had been Under in their previous pair of conference games, holding Toledo to just 17 points, and the week prior allowing just 6 to Akron. The defense will be able to contain the offensively-inept Kent attack tonight, and while Buffalo can and will score the football, their output of offense combined with a bounce-back stifling defensive effort will keep this game just Under the posted total.

Series numbers show 2 of the last 3, and 5 of the previous 7 overall in this series having held Under the total.

Low we go at UB Stadium for Tuesday in this Kent State-Buffalo meeting.

                      1* KENT STATE-BUFFALO UNDER

My free play for Tuesday is Buffalo minus the points over Kent State.

The last place the 2-7 Golden Flashes want to be this Tuesday night is in a dreary and wet Buffalo to face a Bulls team that is chomping at the bit to notch another win and move one step closer to sewing up a berth in the MAC Championship Game at the end of this month.

Buffalo just keeps on truckin', as their win and cover last week at home over Miami-Ohio made it 8-1 straight up for the Bulls, and they also improved to 9-2 against the spread their last 11 home games!

Yes, Kent did pick up the win last Tuesday when they visited Bowling Green, but that was their biggest output of the year in conference action with 35 points. Cannot expect a repeat as this Buffalo defense was punctured for 42 points a week ago at home, but are by far the better of the pair of defenses on the field, as they rank at the top of the MAC in a host of defensive categories.

Kent is allowing right at 34 points per game to be scored against them, and lest you think Buffalo is just a one-trick defensive pony, remember that their quarterback Tyree Jackson is having a fantastic season, and he just threw it for well over 300 yards in last week's win.

They have a special season brewing in Buffalo, and tonight they take Kent State out back to the proverbial woodshed.

Lay the lumber with the Bulls.

                        4* BUFFALO

My free play for tonight is on the Ball State Cardinals, as I like them minus the points against Indiana State.

The Cardinals figure to challenge for the Mid-American Conference title this season, and make their first trip to the dance since 2000. Remember, this is the same team that knocked off Notre Dame on the road in non-conference action last season, and was in the hunt for a league title. And once again the veterans are back, and will most certainly make a difference in leading this team.

Ball State has the experience, versatility, size and perimeter shooting this season, and will be led by talented point guard Tayler Persons. I think this team will cause problems all season, with firepower that includes returners Tahjal Teague, Trey Moses and Kyle Mallers. There's also Missouri-transfer K.J. Walton, who played in all 63 games for the Tigers, and will add punch to the Cardinals' lineup.

Indiana State, meanwhile, could experience a down year in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Sycamores have endured four straight losing seasons and it doesn't figure to get any better. The defense has lacked in years past, and until it gets tougher, the team will be bad.

Now, that said, playing teams like Ball State will get Indiana State ready for the Missouri Valley slate. But tonight, the Cardinals win and cover.

                          2* BALL STATE

Philly college hoops coming out of the box hot tonight my friends, as the La Salle Explorers may the shirt trip cross-town to visit the Temple Owls.

Always entertaining when any of the Big Five rivals tangle, but when it's the first game of the season, even more exciting.

Looks like too many points for me to lay with Fran Dunphy's Owls who do return their top pair of scorers in Quinton Rose and Shizz Alston Jr., but are also minus a key front-court player in Obi Enechioniya who has graduated.

That and the fact the Explorers stopped a 3 game series losing streak with the 87-83 home win last November to even the series against the spread at 3-3-1 the past 7 showdowns.

La Salle has a new coach in former Villanova assistant Ashley Howard, and while their leading scorer BJ Johnson has also moved on, they do have some pop in their lineup with Pookie, as in Pookie Powell who averaged close to 17 points per game last year.

The Explorers have also added a transfer from Marquette in Traci Carter who started 23 games for the Golden Eagles last year.

It is usually the norm that any Big Five battle is hotly-contested, and this early in the season to be getting this many points is a offer too good to pass on.

                            Close one in Philadelphia tonight.

Take La Salle plus the points.

My free college basketball winner for tonight is on the Arizona State Sun Devils minus the points against the Cal State Fullerton Titans, in Tempe.

Gone are Tra Holder, Shannon Evans II and Kodi Justice - I get that. But established by now is coach Bobby Hurley's mental game of "Guard U." The Sun Devils went undefeated during non-conference play last season, and will be looking to re-emerge this season under the guidance of sophomore point guard Remy Martin. After infusing ASU with energy as a key played off the bench last season, his capabilities will be contagious this season.

The Devils have the talent to speed things up once again, but the diversity this year will be better, as Hurley could very well go bigger this season.

I'm intrigued to see stretch shooter Vitaliy Shibel, who started 20 games last season, not to mention 7-foot-1 Serbian freshman Uros Plavsic. Both figure to be contributing factors for the Devils this season.

Fullerton has a tough roster and will be a menace during the Big West season. The Titans surprised many last postseason, and could get there again. But to open the season in a tough venue against a Hurley-coach bunch is a huge chore.

                              Lay the home chalk.

                                COMPLIMENTARY WINNER

My free winner is going to be the road underdog Vancouver Canucks, as I think they can go into Motown and catch the Detroit Red Wings off guard.

There is something about the Canucks that is fun to watch, and of course it starts with rookie Elias Pettersson, who has taken the league by storm. When you add in Brock Boeser and Markus Granlund, the Canucks become awfully dangerous.

Pettersson, who has registered at least a point in seven of nine career games played, just registered a career-high five points on Nov. 2 against the Colorado Avalanche to set a franchise record for most in a regular-season game by a rookie. He leads all rookies in goals and points this season (9 goals, 6 assists, and became the 16th player in league history to score nine or more goals through his first nine career games.

Vancouver does an excellent job on face-offs, which is important when you have a kid like Pettersson, who has a quick shot and can make things happen when you're not paying attention. Bo Horvat, who has seven points (4 goals, 3 assists) over his past nine games, ranks second in the NHL in face-off wins (191), first in even-strength face-off wins (156) and first in faceoffs taken (340).

The Red Wings are just 4-8-2 on the young season, and I don't believe they'll be ready for the fast and steady Canucks. Take the road team.

                                2* CANUCKS
