2-Unit Play. Take #728 St. Louis (-11) over Troy (8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 10)
St. Louis looks like the class of the A-10. They weren't great in their opener, letting SE Missouri State hang around way too long. But SEMS actually played really well in the second half of that game. I don't think that the Bills will take their foot off the gas in this one. Troy lost its starting backcourt from last year, including Wesley Person. They do still have Jordan Varnado, who seems like he has been playing for eight years. But he is 6-7. St. Louis has guys bigger and stronger than Varnado. And if he gets in foul trouble or is neutralized by the St. Louis defense then the floodgates could open. St. Louis has too much talent and they should run away with this one.
2-Unit Play. Take #744 UNLV (-5) over Loyola Marymount (10 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 10)
I actually like Marvin Menzies as a coach and I like how he is building this UNLV program. He is bringing some stability. And he does have talent. He has a three-year starter in Will Clyburn, a go-to guy in Shakur Juiston, and a Top 100 recruit in Bryce Hamilton. They also have a lot of size and athleticism coming off the bench. LMU has struggled against Mountain West teams the last few years and I think they will struggle on the road in this one.
1-Unit Play. Take #771 Illinois State (+3.5) over Belmont (8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 10)
Illinois State has four starters back from last year's team, including their three top scorers, and they added three capable transfers. They are deep and athletic and I think they are capable of getting a road win here.
2-Unit Play. Take #773 Wright State (+3) over Murray State (8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 10)
I think the wrong team is favored here. I am selling Murray State this year. I know they always do what they do and they will be one of the better teams in the Ohio Valley. But they lost their two best players, by far, in Jon Stark and Terrell Miller. They were the best guys on the perimeter and in the post and they combined for nearly 40 points and 11 rebounds per game. I don't see replacements with that high-end talent level. Scott Nagy is a great coach and Wright State is a top team. They also lost by 19 points at home to Murray State last year so they will want some revenge.
NOTE: These next games are likely available in Added Games or College Extra.
2-Unit Play. Take #1216 Marquette (-25) over Bethune Cookman (4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 10)
If Bethune Cookman can lose by 22 points to DePaul they can lose by 40 to Marquette. Last year Cookman played just one Top 100 team, Washington, and they lost by 50. The Golden Eagles can pick their score in this one. And since this is one of the top offensive teams in the country I think that score is going to be high. This one is very much a mismatch and I think that Marquette will stretch its legs after being held to just 67 points in the opener. This one has a 98-66 feel to it.
1-Unit Play. Take #1203 Jackson State (+24.5) over St. Bonaventure (2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 10)
1-Unit Play. Take #1207 Alabama A&M (+35.5) over Houston (3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 10)
These two games have the same basic theme. I think that St. Bonaventure and Houston both lost a tremendous amount of talent from last year's teams, particularly in the backcourt. Both teams lost their leading scorers and biggest guns on offense. And I think it will take a little time to find replacements. Jackson State and Alabama A&M are garbage. But the books are always going to shade the numbers to these weak teams. And I don't know that the Bonnies or the Cougars are going to be able to just hit the jets and clear these very high bars.
2-Unit Play. TEASER: Take #728 St. Louis (-6) over Troy (8 p.m.) AND Take #773 Wright State (+8) over Murray State (8 p.m.)
1-Unit Play. TEASER: Take #738 Oregon State (-5) over Wyoming (3 p.m.) AND Take #740 Pepperdine (-5) over Cal-Northridge (10 p.m.)
1-Unit Play. TEASER: Take #771 Illinois State (+8.5) over Belmont (8 p.m.) AND Take #1216 Marquette (-20) over Bethune Cookman (4 p.m.)Comment
