Chicago Bulls vs. Indiana Pacers Preview and Predictions 12-04-2018

NBA Predictions 3rd December 2018 by Gracenote
    by Gracenote on 12/03/2018

The Chicago Bulls fired Fred Hoiberg as coach of the struggling team and Jim Boylen will run the squad when they visit the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday. Hoiberg went 115-155 in three-plus seasons as coach but the club is a disastrous 5-19 this season.

The Bulls have dropped a season-worst six straight games and 10 of their last 11 and executive vice president of basketball operations John Paxson felt a move needed to be made. "Decisions like this one are never easy to make, however I felt this was the right choice for our organization at this time," Paxson said in a statement on Monday. "After a thorough evaluation, I elected to make this move with the overall development of our team in mind. As a team, I believe it is imperative that we make unfaltering strides in the right direction and build the right habits to help put our players in the best position to evolve not only now, but into the future." Meanwhile, Indiana has dropped four of its last six games after Sunday's 111-110 road loss to the Sacramento Kings. The Pacers will be without star shooting guard Victor Oladipo (knee) for the eighth consecutive game.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBCS Chicago, FS Indiana

ABOUT THE BULLS (5-19): Second-year power forward Lauri Markkanen (elbow) made his season debut in Saturday's 121-105 road loss to the Rockets and had 10 points and four rebounds in 26 minutes. Markkanen missed more than two months due to his preseason injury and was certainly trying to shake the rust off as he was just 4-of-14 shooting. "I missed some easy shots, but I think I played some decent defense, and that's where I tried to make an impact," Markkanen told reporters. "I'm not worried about my shots. I just have to get my legs back."

ABOUT THE PACERS (13-10): Small forward Bojan Bogdanovic scored 27 points in the loss to Sacramento and has tallied at least 20 in six of the past 10 games. Bogdanovic has picked up some of the scoring slack with Oladipo sidelined and he took the possible game-winning attempt against the Kings on Saturday but the shot rimmed out with 4.6 seconds remaining. Point guard Darren Collison registered season bests of 12 assists and six steals along with 11 points against Sacramento and he has topped 10 assists in three of the past four games.

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. The Pacers overcame an 18-point, first-half deficit to post a 107-105 victory in Chicago on Nov. 2.

    2. Bulls F Jabari Parker recorded 21 points and 12 rebounds against the Rockets for his fourth double-double in the past seven games.

    3. Indiana backup SF Doug McDermott averaged 16.5 points during the four-game road trip while making 11-of-17 3-point shots.

    PREDICTION: Pacers 105, Bulls 97

Orlando Magic vs. Miami Heat Preview and Predictions 12-04-2018

NBA Predictions 3rd December 2018 by Gracenote
      by Gracenote on 12/03/2018

The Miami Heat have finally cured their ills at home and aim for their first three-game winning streak of the season when they host the Orlando Magic on Tuesday. Following a six-game losing streak at AmericanAirlines Arena, the Heat managed to squeak past New Orleans and Utah by a combined seven points to improve to 2-1 on their current four-game homestand.

The 102-100 victory over the Jazz on Sunday came with only nine healthy players and in spite of an early 19-point deficit. "In many regards, from a standpoint of grit and not making excuses or feeling sorry for ourselves, this was our signature game this year," coach Erik Spoelstra told the media. The Magic will be playing the final contest in their six-game road trip, which is tied for the longest on their schedule. They improved to 2-3 on the swing with a 99-85 victory at Phoenix on Friday.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FS Florida (Orlando), FS Sun (Miami)

ABOUT THE MAGIC (11-12): Center Nikola Vucevic has carried Orlando on the trip, averaging 24.4 points on 55.2 percent shooting and grabbing 11.6 rebounds in the five games, including 25 and 15 in the 99-85 win over the Suns. "I was just trying to stay aggressive," Vucevic told reporters of his matchup with Phoenix center and No. 1 overall pick Deandre Ayton. "For big men, it takes a little bit, especially on the defensive end, to kind of get a feel for it. The game is so fast." Terrence Ross chipped in 21 points off the bench while Aaron Gordon added 18 on 8-of-12 shooting after missing the previous game with a back issue.

ABOUT THE HEAT (9-13): Four key players were already missing Sunday's game due to injury -- including the seventh straight game for 2018 All-Star Goran Dragic (knee) -- and the ranks were further depleted when starting swingman Rodney McGruder sprained his right ankle in the first quarter. The bench stepped up as four reserves combined for 42 points, led by Dwyane Wade's 15 and team-high eight assists. Dragic will miss Tuesday's contest and McGruder is questionable, the team announced, but guard Tyler Johnson (hamstring) and forward Derrick Jones Jr. (hamstring) are listed as probable.

      BUZZER BEATERS

      1. Heat C Hassan Whiteside had 23 points and 20 rebounds against the Jazz and entered Monday's action ranked second in the NBA in rebounding (13.9) and first in blocked shots (2.9).

      2. Magic SG Evan Fournier is 17-for-55 from the field on the road trip.

      3. Gordon finished with 26 points and 16 boards to lead Orlando to a 104-101 victory over visiting Miami in the season opener for both teams Oct. 17.

      PREDICTION: Heat 109, Magic 105

Portland Trail Blazers vs. Dallas Mavericks Preview and Predictions 12-04-2018

NBA Predictions 3rd December 2018 by Gracenote
        by Gracenote on 12/03/2018

The Portland Trail Blazers are experiencing issues after getting off to a strong start. Portland has dropped five of its last six games entering Tuesday's road game against the Dallas Mavericks, who have won nine of their past 12 games.

The Trail Blazers have allowed 125 or more points three times during the six-game stretch and the issues were evident during Sunday's 131-118 road setback against the San Antonio Spurs. "It's definitely been a struggle," Portland forward Al-Farouq Aminu told reporters. "Teams have been able to score at a highly efficient rate pretty easy the last couple of games. I like the way that we started the game, we had a couple of steals, guys getting on the floor -- we even showed that at halftime. We just have to make sure that we sustain." Dallas continued its recent stellar stretch with a 114-110 home win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday and the Mavericks have topped 100 points in four of their past five games. Impressive rookie forward Luka Doncic (hip) was unable to play against the Clippers and is expected to return against Portland.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, NBCS Northwest (Portland), FS Southwest (Dallas)

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (13-10): The 131 points allowed to the Spurs is the second most allowed by Portland this season behind the poor showing in a 143-100 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Nov. 21. The Trail Blazers are giving up 111.7 points per game and often are trying to outscore teams behind the offensive attack averaging 113 per contest. Star point guard Damian Lillard had 37 points and 10 assists against San Antonio for his third 30-point effort in four games and his third double-digit assist outing of the campaign.

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (11-10): Second-year point guard Dennis Smith Jr. will be in the lineup but had a dentist appointment Monday after losing part of a tooth courtesy of an elbow from Clippers guard Patrick Beverley. "It's just a freak accident," Smith told reporters after the contest. "I'm sure he didn't do it on purpose. I'm sure that wasn't his intentions, but it happens. Come back in, finish the game, we got a win. That's all that matters. I love when the game gets like that. You can go out there, get mad, play with some intensity, heart. When it gets chippy, it's just like playing back home. That's the best way to play." Small forward Harrison Barnes scored a season-high 30 points against Los Angeles and is averaging 24 over the last five games.

        BUZZER BEATERS

        1. The Trail Blazers went 2-1 against the Mavericks last season to win the season series for the first time since 2009-10.

        2. Dallas G J.J. Barea scored a season-best 24 points against the Clippers for his third 20-point performance of the campaign.

        3. Portland G-F Evan Turner (Achilles) could miss his second straight game.

PREDICTION: Mavericks 116, Trail Blazers 112

Sacramento Kings vs. Phoenix Suns Preview and Predictions 12-04-2018

NBA Predictions 3rd December 2018 by Gracenote
Kings vs. Suns Preview and Predictions

          by Gracenote on 12/03/2018

The top two picks of the 2018 NBA Draft will be on the floor together when the Phoenix Suns host the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday. Top overall pick Deandre Ayton is making an instant impact for the Suns while No. 2 pick Marvin Bagley III is being brought along at a slower pace by the Kings.

Ayton, who played at Arizona, has started all 23 of Phoenix's games and is averaging 16.2 points and 10.2 rebounds while shooting 59.9 percent from the field. Bagley, who played for Duke, is averaging 13 points and 6.8 rebounds in 21 games off the bench and hopes to be available after missing Saturday's victory over the Indiana Pacers due to back spasms. Bagley's team is performing better at the .500 mark while the Suns have lost five straight games and entered Monday with the worst mark in the NBA. Phoenix star shooting guard Devin Booker (hamstring) is questionable after being injured during Sunday's 120-96 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, NCBS California (Sacramento), FS Arizona

ABOUT THE KINGS (11-11): Second-year shooting guard Bogdan Bogdanovic scored 20 points against the Pacers for his third straight effort of 20 or more points. Bogdanovic is finding his stride after returning from knee surgery less than four weeks ago. "It's not been easy for him to have the injury that he had and try to catch up a little bit and get his rhythm," Sacramento coach Dave Joerger told reporters. "I think he finally felt very comfortable (last week). Whether the shots are going in or not doesn't make a difference if you're finding a rhythm. I think he's starting to feel a little bit better and that's good for us."

ABOUT THE SUNS (4-19): The status of Booker may not be known until game day as the club figures to be cautious since this is the second time he has injured the left hamstring this season. Phoenix struggles even when it has its best player and is on pace to win just 15 games this season. "It's kind of hard not to focus on the record, but we've still got games to play," forward Josh Jackson told reporters. "We show flashes of how good we could be. We just have to be able to start stringing those runs together and just be better all the time. The more consistent we get, the better we'll be."

          BUZZER BEATERS

          1. The Suns went 3-1 against the Kings last season and won both games in Phoenix.

          2. Sacramento PG De'Aaron Fox was just 4-of-16 shooting against the Pacers is 25-of-78 over the past six games.

          3. Phoenix SF T.J. Warren (ankle) could miss his third straight game.

          PREDICTION: Kings 109, Suns 102

San Antonio Spurs vs. Utah Jazz Preview and Predictions 12-04-2018

NBA Predictions 3rd December 2018 by Gracenote
            by Gracenote on 12/03/2018

Excuse the Utah Jazz if they need directions to the arena when they host the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday. The Jazz have played 10 of their past 12 games on the road and two thirds (16) of their first 24 games have been contested in away venues.

San Antonio dropped back-to-back games by an average of 35 points before getting things back together with a 131-118 home win over the Portland Trail Blazers. "It had to be better than the last two games, right?" Spurs coach Gregg Popovich told reporters. "Everybody's got to participate. Good individual defense matters and good team defense (matters), but there is no team defense without talking or trust. We're trying to get there with this new group." Utah finished up a three-game road swing by falling 102-100 to the Miami Heat on Sunday. The Jazz host the Houston Rockets on Thursday and the back-to-back home games will be their first since Nov. 7 and 9.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, NBATV, FS Southwest (San Antonio), AT&T Sportsnet (Utah)

ABOUT THE SPURS (11-12): Shooting guard DeMar DeRozan was on the mark with a season-high 36 points against Portland after averaging just 14 in the two blowout setbacks. "That's why he has been an All-Star for so long," Popovich told reporters. "You just keep going. If you have a bad stretch, you know the percentages are probably with you. He's been around a long time. He's very confident, and he knows what he can do. That's not going to bother him if he misses a few shots. Scorers shouldn't have a conscience." DeRozan has six 30-point outings this season and is teaming well with power forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who had 29 points and eight rebounds against the Trail Blazers.

ABOUT THE JAZZ (11-13): Point guard Ricky Rubio scored 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting against Miami after averaging 8.3 points on 7-of-28 shooting over a three-game span. "Ricky was really good," Utah coach Quin Snyder told reporters after the win. "I thought he was poised with the ball and controlled the game for us on the offensive end, and he defended really well, too. That's the kind of play we need from him, and that's what he's capable of doing." Star shooting guard Donovan Mitchell was just 8-of-24 shooting while scoring 18 points after being 50 percent or better the previous two games when he averaged 29.5 points.

            BUZZER BEATERS

            1. The Jazz have won four of the past five meetings.

            2. Utah C Rudy Gobert had 12 points and 18 rebounds against Miami for his 21st double-double of the campaign.

            3. San Antonio G Marco Belinelli (neck) will likely return after a one-game absence.

            PREDICTION: Jazz 104, Spurs 101

              #2 ACARAMELADO (ML=2/1)

CRACKED CORN - This animal didn't run well on a sloppy track in her last race around the track at Mahoning Valley Race Cour. You probably should throw out that showing. I believe this horse will be right there at the wire. Gets Lasix for the 2nd time, so Rone must have confidence in her. ACARAMELADO - I like the fact that this first time starter's recent works have been over this track. The addition of Lasix might make this animal wake up and smell the coffee in this event.

              Vulnerable Contenders: #6 IAMTHEBEST (ML=7/2), #5 COPPER TRAIL (ML=6/1), #7 COWTOWN HOME (ML=8/1),

IAMTHEBEST - Notched a mediocre speed fig last out in a Maiden Special race on November 19th. Not likely to see an improved performance off of that number. COPPER TRAIL - While Equibase's speed ratings are strong, I would cast aside the high one from the November 19th in the slop. Some horses just run well on the off going. Improbable that the speed figure she notched on November 19th will be good enough in this race. COWTOWN HOME - This filly finished off the board on Oct 17th and wasn't even close last time around the track either. Somewhat easily forgotten fig last race out at Mahoning Valley Race Cour at 5 1/2 furlongs. Don't believe this less than sharp equine will improve too much in today's race.

I think about DEE WAY TO GO here. Her 63 average has this filly with among the top speed figures in this race. Lately Radosevich has provided players with a very good winning percentage with horses racing in dirt sprint races. Rivera will most likely be able to get this filly to break out sharply in this event. REGINA GEORGE - With a +35 ROI, this rider and handler duo has produced competitive profits recently for bettors. TERRIFIC PLAY - Had one of the top speed figures of this field in her last race. Looks solid for the conditions of this race today, showing solid figures in dirt sprint races lately.

                      # 8 BLAZIN ON BY 9/2

                      # 1 WINDI'S MOMENT 5/1

I've got to go with BLAZIN ON BY. Is tough not to examine based on Equibase Speed Figures which have been respectable - 57 avg - of late. This filly gets a boost with Velazquez in the saddle. The average class fig of 57 makes this horse hard to beat. BRANDYS PRIDE - She has been running soundly and the speed figures are among the best in this field. With a reliable jock who has won at a competitive 29 percent clip over the last 30 days. This has to be one of the top selections.

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

                        #7 FIRST PLACE (ML=8/1)
                        #3 EMBELLISHING BOB (ML=3/1)
                        #2 YAH YAH SIR (ML=7/2)
                        #5 DEVIL'S TEETH (ML=5/1)

FIRST PLACE - Based on the TrackMaster data I've reviewed, this gelding should run well off the vacation. Sedillo moves this thoroughbred here to Zia Park from Ruidoso Downs. Looking at the horse's recent past performance lines, he has shown the ability to win at different tracks. This gelding might as well call Zia Park home. Don't overlook how he races well over this track. EMBELLISHING BOB - Garcia knows this horse pretty well. Strong win percentage of 67 when horse and jock join forces. Nice return on investment for this rider and handler tandem. Another way to judge class is (EPS) earnings per start. This thoroughbred has the highest in the bunch. I think he'll be close at the end. YAH YAH SIR - The return on investment when Juarez and Arnett team up is terrific. That 82 fig this gelding registered in his last affair tells me he's a big time player this time out. DEVIL'S TEETH - This gelding is the longer price of the 'split' entry from the barn of Arnett. Have to make this gelding a contender; he comes off a solid effort on Nov 25th.

Vulnerable Contenders: #8 BOMBAY BOB (ML=5/2), #6 SNAPY HOUR (ML=8/1),

BOMBAY BOB - On a downward moving sequence. Speed figures keep declining. Won't be easy for this horse to beat this group off of that last speed fig. Not probable to improve enough to run a figure anywhere near today's class rating, so put him on the vulnerable contenders list. SNAPY HOUR - Don't feel this racer will make a winning move in today's event. That last speed figure was mediocre when compared with today's class figure.

                        STRAIGHT WAGERS:

Calgary Flames vs. Columbus Blue Jackets Preview and Predictions 12-04-2018

NHL Predictions 3rd December 2018 by Gracenote
                          by Gracenote on 12/03/2018

First-place Calgary has a hot goaltender on its hands in Mike Smith, who will try to make it four straight wins when the Flames visit the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday. Smith has allowed four goals in his last three starts with a .940 save percentage during that span, and has yielded three or fewer goals in six straight contests in helping the Flames lead Anaheim by one point in the Pacific Division.

"Something gets a little bit off and it's just like a golfer - golfers struggle sometimes and they have to get their game back," Smith's father, Ron, told the Calgary Herald after the Flames' 3-2 victory at Chicago on Sunday. "He still believed in himself, and that's half the battle - when you don't lose your confidence. So I knew he would get it back together." Columbus trails first-place Washington by one point in the Metropolitan Division after a 3-2 loss at the New York Islanders on Saturday and is 8-3-1 in its last 12 games. Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella wasn't feeling too nostalgic after Saturday's game - the first at Nassau Coliseum since 2015, telling reporters: "I don't (care) about the home team and how they feel. I'm a little concerned about the mistakes we made." Columbus has won three straight meetings, including a two-game season series sweep in 2017-18 when Pierre-Luc Dubois scored three goals and Sergei Bobrovsky allowed one goal on 60 shots.

Colorado Avalanche vs. Pittsburgh Penguins Preview and Predictions 12-04-2018

Nathan MacKinnon rode a sterling four-point performance (one goal, three assists) to lift the Colorado Avalanche to a 6-3 win last week over the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins, who received all of their offense courtesy of Sidney Crosby's 11th career hat trick. The Nova Scotia native will be back in action on Tuesday as the Avalanche carry an 11-game point streak (9-0-2) into PPG Paints Arena against the Penguins.

MacKinnon wasn't the lone member of the Avalanche to have his way with the Penguins, as linemates Gabriel Landeskog (one goal, one assist) and Mikko Rantanen (two assists) recorded two-point performances. The NHL's Second Star for November, MacKinnon continued his sizzling play with his team-leading 19th goal before setting up Landeskog's empty-net tally in Sunday's 2-0 win at Detroit to open Colorado's four-game road trip. While the Avalanche are ascending in the Central Division, Pittsburgh has plummeted in the Metropolitan after dropping 12 of its last 16 games (4-9-3). "We've just got to find consistency," Crosby told reporters. "We've got to find ways to not hurt ourselves in games with big mistakes, and if we do make them, we've got to find a way to bail each other out of those mistakes - get some big plays or big goals, whatever it is."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TVA, Altitude (Colorado), AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh

ABOUT THE AVALANCHE (16-6-5): Rantanen set up two goals for the fifth time during his eight-game point streak (four goals, 12 assists) on Sunday to keep his two-point advantage over MacKinnon for the NHL lead in points (45). While the offense has been consistent, goaltender Semyon Varlamov has been strong as he provides the last line of defense - highlighted by his 24-save performance against the Red Wings for his first shutout of the season and 24th career. The 30-year-old Russian has allowed just 14 goals in his last seven starts overall (6-0-1) heading into a tilt with Pittsburgh, against which he sports a 4-1-1 mark with a .920 save percentage.

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (10-10-5): Crosby converted a 2-on-1 rush with Jake Guentzel to open the scoring just 39 seconds into Saturday's 4-2 setback versus Philadelphia and extend both players' respective point streaks to four games. The 31-year-old Crosby has collected 15 points (eight goals, seven assists) in his last nine games overall and has 13 points (nine goals, four assists) in 13 career encounters with Colorado. Fellow former Hart Trophy recipient Evgeni Malkin is also averaging a point per game against the Avalanche with 14 (six goals, eight assists) in as many contests.

                            OVERTIME

                            1. Pittsburgh has not permitted a power-play goal in each of its last eight games.

                            2. Avalanche D Erik Johnson, who scored in the first meeting with the Penguins, resides one assist shy of 200 for his career.

                            3. Pittsburgh acquired D Marcus Pettersson from Anaheim in exchange for F Daniel Sprong on Monday.

                            PREDICTION: Penguins 4, Avalanche 3

Winnipeg Jets vs. New York Islanders Preview and Predictions 12-04-2018

The New York Islanders hope a return to their former home will spark a winning streak after dropping four of the previous six games, and after Saturday's emotional victory over Columbus at Nassau Coliseum they are back at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Tuesday to host the Winnipeg Jets. The Islanders rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the first game at their old home since 2015, earning a 3-2 win New York hopes will spark an offense that netted four goals in its previous four defeats.

"From the get-go, the crowd was incredible," Islanders captain Anders Lee told reporters afterward. "That kind of energy wins you hockey games." It now is the Islanders challenge to carry that energy back from Long Island and into their more modern abode against a Jets squad coming off a thrilling comeback victory of their own. Winnipeg, which has made a habit of blowing late leads, rallied from a 3-0 deficit after two periods to top the Rangers 4-3 on Sunday, getting the shootout winner from NHL First Star of the Week Mark Scheifele. "It wasn't the start we wanted, but a great third (period)," Scheifele told the media afterward. "We had our chances and we capitalized on them, so we are happy with that."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TSN3 (Winnipeg), MSG Plus (New York)

ABOUT THE JETS (16-8-2): Scheifele finished last week with five goals and three assists in four games, including a career-high tying three assists against Chicago on Thursday and the game-winning overtime tally Saturday at New Jersey. Patrik Laine, named the league's first star for November, began the week leading the NHL with 21 goals, while Blake Wheeler ranked third in assists (30). One area of concern has been the recent play of goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, a Vezina Trophy finalist last season who has posted a .858 save percentage while going 2-2-0 in his past five appearances.

ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (13-9-3): Coach Barry Trotz's move to start the physical line of Matt Martin, Cal Clutterbuck and Casey Cizikas line paid off as the trio set the tone Saturday, before Cizikas scored the go-ahead goal at 7:09 of the third period. Reigning Calder Trophy winner Mathew Barzal continues to struggle, scoring only three goals with a minus-10 rating after finishing with 22 goals one season ago. Thomas Greiss made 28 saves to earn his ninth win Saturday and is 3-1-0 in his past four starts.

                              OVERTIME

                              1. The Islanders started the week 26th in the NHL on the power play at 15.4 percent, while the Jets boast the league's second-best unit at 29.1 percent.

                              2. Winnipeg coach Paul Maurice has not decided if Hellebuyck or backup Laurent Brossoit will start in goal Tuesday.

                              3. After Tuesday, the Islanders play six of their next nine games away from home, where they are 6-6-1.

                              PREDICTION: Jets 4, Islanders 3
