Southern California Trojans vs. Oregon Ducks Preview and Predictions 2019-01-13

NCAAB Predictions 12th January 2019 by Gracenote
    by Gracenote on 01/12/2019

Oregon was the pick to win the Pac-12 in the conference's preseason media poll. But the injury-plagued Ducks, who host USC on Sunday night, are off to a 0-2 start to league play and could be looking at a second straight season of missing the NCAA Tournament.

It's been a rough 10 days for Dana Altman's squad, which first learned that star 7-2 freshman center Bol Bol - considered a probable high NBA lottery pick next June - had decided to end his college career and undergo season-ending foot surgery. The Ducks, who are also without 6-9 shot-blocking forward Kenny Wooten (broken jaw), opened Pac-12 play with a home loss to "Civil War" rival Oregon State, the first time the Beavers won in Eugene since 2012, and followed that up with a crushing 87-84 overtime home loss to UCLA on Thursday, blowing a nine-point lead in the final 51 seconds of regulation which tied for the sixth-largest deficit overcome in the final minute in Division I history. "No easy way to spin that one, that's a gut punch," Altman told reporters afterward. "I told the guys, I've never had one like that and I know they haven't. It's tough on all of us." USC, which swept California (82-73) and Stanford (77-66) at home to open Pac-12 play, also comes into Sunday's contest off a tough overtime loss - a 79-74 decision at Oregon State on Thursday night.

    TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPNU

ABOUT USC (9-7, 2-1 Pac-12): The Trojans lost to the Beavers despite a career-high 37 points from 6-10 senior Bennie Boatwright, who also had a team-high eight rebounds and was 4-of-9 from 3-point range. The good news was that explosive 6-5 freshman guard Kevin Porter Jr., - another potential NBA lottery pick - returned to action after being sidelined for six weeks with a bruised quad but showed his rust, finishing with just five points on 2-of-7 shooting and four rebounds in 25 minutes off the bench. Boatwright leads the team in scoring (17.4) followed by 6-11 junior forward Nick Rakocevic (15.1) with guard Jonah Mathews (12.1) and Porter (10.7) also averaging in double figures.

ABOUT OREGON (9-6, 0-2): The losses of Bol, who led the team in scoring (21 points per game), rebounding (9.6) and blocks (2.7) while shooting 52 percent from 3-point range, and Wooten (6.6 points, 4.9 boards, 1.6 blocks) have cost the Ducks their two best interior defenders while a third forward, 6-7 Abu Kigab, decided to transfer to Boise State at the start of the year, leaving Altman with just eight healthy scholarship players and a pair of walk-ons. "We've got to get somebody," Altman told Oregonlive.com when asked about the possibility of getting players from other athletic teams at the school, including football, to perhaps join his squad. "We had tryouts early and we had a couple of guys we really wanted, but they didn't meet the NCAA standards for time and (credit) hours and all that. The easiest thing right now is to either get athletes off other teams or guys that are cleared so that we can practice." Junior point guard Payton Pritchard is the only player averaging in double digits (11.9), while 6-9 senior forward Paul White (9.9) and sophomore guard Victor Bailey Jr. (9.7) are flirting with double digits.

    TIP-INS

    1. Pritchard needs 11 points to become the 37th player in program history to score 1,000 points and is just 20 assists shy of 400 for his career.

    2. Rakocevic leads the Pac-12 in rebounding with an average of 9.9 and in double-doubles with seven.

    3. USC won at Oregon last season 75-70 to snap a 14-game losing streak to the Ducks.

    PREDICTION: USC 73, Oregon 69

UCLA Bruins vs. Oregon St. Beavers Preview and Predictions 2019-01-13

NCAAB Predictions 12th January 2019 by Gracenote
      by Gracenote on 01/12/2019

In the wake of an historic comeback on Thursday night, UCLA will look to pull off another rare feat when it visits Oregon State on Sunday in a Pac-12 matchup. Following a stunning rally in Thursday's overtime victory at Oregon, the Bruins bid for their fourth consecutive victory and vie for their first road sweep of the Oregon schools since the 2010-11 season.

UCLA trailed by as many as 17 points in the second half at Oregon and became the first team in league history to erase a deficit of at least nine points in the final minute. "When you kind of steal one like that, which is kind of what you do when you're down 14 with four to play, those can really give you some momentum, when you kind of feel like you stole one," Bruins interim head coach Murry Bartow said. Oregon State also needed to go to overtime to extend its winning streak to three games, outlasting USC 79-74 its last time out despite the absence of leading scorer Tres Tinkle. "We have depth on our team," freshman point guard Antoine Vernon said. "When one guy goes down, we can make it up in different ways."

      TV: 10 p.m. ET, FS1

ABOUT UCLA (10-6, 3-0 Pac-12): The Bruins averaged 65 points during a four-game slide that led to the dismissal of Steve Alford, but they boosted that mark to 92.3 points in winning all three contests under Bartow. "Well, I just love the spirit of this team right now," Bartow said. "We played pretty well against Stanford, scoring 92, and we played pretty well against Cal, scoring 98. ... But again, I think it shows the spirit of these guys. It shows the spirit about them." Prince Ali led five players in double figures with 22 points Thursday, which included a pair of double-doubles from Moses Brown and Jalen Hill.

ABOUT OREGON STATE (10-4, 2-0): Senior forward Tres Tinkle, averaging 20.5 points and 8.6 rebounds and riding a streak of four straight 20-point games, missed Thursday's win due to an ankle injury, but Stephen Thompson Jr. filled the void by scoring a career-high 34 points to go with 10 rebounds and five assists. Beavers coach Wayne Tinkle estimated that his son would have been about "70 percent" if he played and hopes that holding him out will allow him to return against UCLA. "We can't make a decision for sure, but I'm banking on him playing until I hear something else. But we'll see," the coach said.

      TIP-INS

      1. UCLA F Kris Wilkes, averaging a team-best 17.1 points, has scored in double figures in every game this season.

      2. Tres Tinkle scored 27 points per game as Oregon State split two matchups with UCLA last season.

      3. The Bruins have made at least one 3-pointer in 638 consecutive games.

PREDICTION: Oregon State 86, UCLA 84

                #7 LEGENDARY NIGHT (ML=9/2)

LOOK AT MY STAR - I expect a big effort from this gelding today. He ran a huge race at big odds when he made his debut on December 6th. Ranked number 1 in earnings per start (EPS). Another confirmation that this horse is the class of the race. MO DINERO - This jockey and trainer have a lucrative ROI when they are put together. This gelding is in nice condition, having run a nice race on December 15th, finishing third. Past performance lines show this thoroughbred with three improving speed figs. Ocasio should be on a live horse right here in this race. LEGENDARY NIGHT - Just check out his most recent speed fig, 79. That one looks good in this group.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #4 YOU DON'T OWN ME (ML=5/1), #3 RUXIN (ML=6/1), #9 MR. DIPLOMAT (ML=8/1),

RUXIN - This equine's sire hasn't done too well with 1st timers. MR. DIPLOMAT - Just don't think he is pegged at the proper price at the expected odds.

                STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Have to go with #8 LOOK AT MY STAR on the win end if we get at least 4/1 odds

                  # 6 VICS CLASSIC 4/1

I've got to go with ADIOS AMIGAS. Has run admirably when racing a longer quarter horse race. Has been running solidly lately and will almost certainly be close to the front end early on. Could beat this field given the 81 speed figure put up in his last outing. ROYALS INIT FOR LOVE - Had one of the best Equibase Speed Figures of this group in his last affair. With a nice class fig average of 74, has one of the top class advantages in this group. VICS CLASSIC - Has ran soundly in longer quarter horse races.

LAW ABIDIN CITIZEN looks to be a very strong contender. Pereira will most likely be able to get this gelding to break out quickly in this race. With a quite good 107 Equibase speed fig last time out, will unquestionably be a factor in this affair. Has been racing solidly and has among the most respectable speed in the race for today's distance. BIG SCORE - He has been running quite well and the Speed Figures are among the strongest in this field. Ran a solid last race. SHIVERMETIMBERS - Strong rider with trainer figs make this horse a strong pick. Don't overlook this colt in your propositions - very dangerous with Espinoza aboard.

TYLER'S TEK - Was in an Allowance race at Canterbury Park last race out. That affair had a class number of 95 and he is moving down today. A certain solid contender. If you review the PP's for this animal, you'll see he has recorded the top speed figure at the distance and surface. A repeat effort today and this horse has a superb chance to win. Is ranked totally number one in the field in earnings per race. A dominant outing in this field will add to that bankroll. Ran a lackluster race at Canterbury Park last race out. Racing under normal track conditions puts this gelding at the top of my list of contenders. BECOME AN INSIDER - Got to appreciate a good work horse. This gelding's last morning work was second fastest of the day for the distance. FIRST TO THE WIRE - This thoroughbred coming off a nice effort in the last month or so is a serious competitor in my opinion. This gelding has plenty of ability on the turf. Could be long gone by the time they hit the top of the lane. WELLDIDYOUGETIT - I like to bet on this handicapping theory, a racer coming back off a sharp contest within the last month. It looks like Lindsay had to become familiar with this gelding on January 2nd when riding him for the first time. Back on board again today. That 89 fig this gelding recorded in his last event tells me he's a main player this time out. Three consecutive improved speed figures (65-79-89) make this horse a dominant contender.

                          Vulnerable Contenders: #7 C C EXPRESS (ML=9/2), #3 BANK WALKER (ML=5/1), #4 PARLEY STREET (ML=8/1),

C C EXPRESS - This thoroughbred likes to finish in the money, but doesn't usually win. Keep out of the top spot. BANK WALKER - I don't like the plain fact that bandages were used on Dec 11th. PARLEY STREET - Don't feel this entrant will make a winning move today. That last speed rating was mediocre when compared with today's class figure.

                          STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Bet on #1 TYLER'S TEK to win if you can get at least 7/2 odds

I'll take my chances here with Atlanta as a double-digit home dog against the Bucks. I really like what I have seen from the Hawks here of late. Atlanta has split their last 4 games, covering 3 of them, including a 106-82 win over Miami at home as a 6.5-point dog. They only game they didn't cover was at Brooklyn in the second game of a back-to-back. I think we get a big effort here from Atlanta due to the fact that they were recently embarrassed by the Bucks in a 144-112 loss at Milwaukee on 1/4. This will also be the Bucks third straight on the road and they are far from 100% right now. Give me the Hawks +10!
