    BRADY IN THE COLD

While the weather could affect different players in different ways, one thing we know for certain is that it won’t New England’s quarterback. Tom Brady seems to love the cold with a ridiculous 24-4 record in games played in sub-30-degree weather and when the cold gets below 20 degrees, his record is 5-1. Brady has led the Pats to wins in the cold but let’s take a look at how he fared in those games:

    Jan. 10, 2004 (4 degrees) - 21 of 41, 201 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT
    Jan. 23, 2005 (11 degrees) - 14 of 21, 207 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT
    Jan. 10, 2010 (20 degrees) - 23 of 42, 154 yards, 2 TD, 3 INT
    Jan. 10, 2015 (20 degrees) - 33 of 50, 367 yards, 3 TD, 1 INT
    Dec. 18, 2016 (18 degrees) - 16 of 32, 188 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT
    Dec. 31, 2017 (13 degrees) - 18 of 37, 190 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT

Playoffs James White was in full effect last weekend, posting an insane 15 receptions for 97 yards against the Chargers. We suggested he would have a big game and he got us a winner, going Over 45.5 receiving yards with nine minutes remaining in the second quarter.

We know that Kansas City struggles against the run — we dug into that yesterday. Against pass-catching backs, the Chiefs are slightly better with a DVOA rank of 21, giving up 6.9 passes and 56.4 receiving yards per game to an opponent’s backfield during the regular season. The weather should also play in White’s factor, as Brady will be looking for more short completions in the cold and possible crosswinds at Arrowhead.

The Rams defense did well at home last week to shut down Ezekiel Elliott, holding the Cowboys’ star back to 47 rushing yards on 20 carries and 19 receiving yards on two receptions. L.A. will again be challenged by New Orleans’ backfield this week as they get the unenviable task of trying to shut down Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara on the turf at the Superdome.

Kamara was his usual dual-threat out of the backfield last week against Philadelphia, rushing 16 times for 71 yards and adding four receptions for 35 yards. That marked the third straight game and that he has put up 100-plus yards from scrimmage. Kamara averaged 106.1 yards from scrimmage per game in the regular season, the eighth-most in the NFL. The Rams are tough to read against dual-threat backs, ranking 28th in rushing DVOA but fourth in isolated passing DVOA to running backs. Back in Week 9, Kamara put up 82 rushing yards and 34 receiving yards against the Rams

Rams quarterback Jared Goff seemed to hit a bit of a wall towards the end of 2018. In five December starts, Goff averaged just 228.2 passing yards, cracking the 220-yard mark just once when he threw for 339 yards when the Rams were chasing the Eagles all night in Week 15. Over that same stretch, he completed just 58.6 percent of his passes for 6.3 yards per attempt.

Goff was serviceable in the Divisional Round, going 15 of 28 for 186 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions, getting us a winner with the Under 282.5 on his passing yards total. But serviceable isn’t what we expect from Goff and the high-flying Rams offense

In addition to Goff’s late-season struggles are his road struggles. Goff averaged just 243.8 passing yards per game away from the L.A. Coliseum during the regular season (as opposed to 342.5 at home). He did throw 391 yards in the shootout at the Superdome back in Week 9, but as mentioned above, this is not the same Goff as we saw earlier in the season. The Saints were excellent against the pass last week, limiting Nick Foles to just 201 yards on 18-of-31 passing

            Sunday's Tip Sheet
            David Schwab

This Sunday’s college basketball betting action gets an early start with a trio of matchups featuring a nationally ranked team. First on in the ACC, the No. 11 Florida State Seminoles and the Boston College Eagles clash in Chestnut Hill.

Shifting to the Big East, the Providence Friars will be on the road against the No. 15 Marquette Golden Eagles. A bit later in the afternoon, the Illinois Fighting Illini will square off against the No. 23 Iowa Hawkeyes in a Big Ten tilt at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

No. 11 Florida State at Boston College (ESPNU, 12:00 p.m. ET)
**A pending winter storm in the Boston area could impact this game**

Opening Odds: Florida State --6, Total 144 ½

            Betting Matchup

It has been a rough start for Florida State in ACC play. Losses to Virginia on the road and Duke at home as an underdog in each game is understandable. However, Monday’s 75-62 road loss to Pittsburgh as 4 ½-point favorites dropped the Seminoles to 1-3 both straight-up and against the spread in the conference standings. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in all four of those games.

Boston College’s current SU slide reached five games with Wednesday’s 80-70 loss to Louisville as an 11-point road underdog. The Eagles have gone 3-2 ATS during this same span with the total going OVER in four of the five games. They are 9-7 SU overall with an 8-8 record ATS. Boston College has failed to cover in eight of its first 10 home games this season. One big positive is junior guard Ky Bowman with an average of 19.9 points per game while also leading the way in rebounds (8.3) and assists (3.6).

            Betting Trends

-- The Seminoles are 1-3-1 ATS in their last five road games and the total has stayed UNDER in 12 of their last 13 games on the road.

-- The Eagles have gone 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games following a SU loss and the total has gone OVER in 23 of their last 32 home games.

-- The home team has covered the spread in the last five meetings with the total going OVER in the last four games between these conference foes.

Providence at No. 15 Marquette (CBS Sports Network, 12:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: No Overnight Posted (Injury)

            Betting Matchup

Providence snapped a three-game skid in Big East play (SU and ATS) with Tuesday’s 72-63 victory against Seton Hall as a slight 1 ½-point home favorite. The total stayed UNDER 142 points in that win and it has stayed UNDER in four of the Friars’ last six games. Junior guard Alpha Diallo has led the way in scoring this season with 17.2 PPG, but freshman guard David Duke led the way in Tuesday’s win with 18 points.

The Golden Eagles are off to a SU 15-3 start with an 11-7 record ATS. They started Big East play with a lopsided road loss to St. John’s as two-point road underdogs. However, with a big 74-71 road win against Georgetown on Tuesday as a 1 ½-point favorite, Marquette improved to 4-1 SU (3-2 ATS) with the four-game winning streak. Star guard Markus Howard (24.4 PPG) left Tuesday’s contest with a stiff back and his status for Sunday is currently listed as questionable.

            Betting Trends

-- The Friars have gone 7-2 ATS in their last nine games on the road and the total has gone OVER in their last four road games against a team with a SU winning record.

-- The Golden Eagles are 6-2 ATS in their last eight games coming off a SU win with the total going OVER in five of their last seven Sunday games.

-- The favorite has covered the closing number in 13 of the last 18 meetings with the total going OVER in three of the last five matchups.

Illinois at No. 23 Iowa (Big Ten, 1:00 p.m. ET)

            Opening Odds: Iowa -9 (-105), Total 156 ½

            Betting Matchup

Wednesday’s 95-68 romp over Minnesota as a one-point home underdog snapped a five-game losing streak. Illinois is 3-3 ATS during this six-game span with the total going OVER in its last two games. The Fighting Illini are 0-4 SU in four previous road games this season as part of a 5-12 record overall. They are scoring as many points (74.4) as they are giving up at the other end of the court (74.3).

Iowa raced past Penn State 89-82 on Wednesday closing as a 3 ½-point road underdog. This was its fourth win in a row both SU and ATS. The Hawkeyes lost their first three Big Ten games SU with a 1-2 mark ATS. The total went OVER 139 points in Wednesday’s win after staying UNDER in six of their previous eight contests. Sophomore Luka Garza led the way against the Lions with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Junior forward Tyler Cook is Iowa’s leading scorer this season with 17.1 PPG, but he remains questionable for Sunday with an ankle injury.

            Betting Trends

-- The Fighting Illini have gone 1-6 ATS in their last seven games after covering the spread in their previous game. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in six of their last seven games on Sunday.

-- The Hawkeyes are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games after covering in their previous game with the total going OVER or ending as a PUSH in nine of their last 12 games.

-- The road team is 6-2-1 ATS in the last eight meetings with the total staying UNDER or ending as a PUSH in 11 of the last 14 meetings in Iowa.

                Sunday, January 20

Florida State lost three of its last four games, losing last game at Pitt after losing at home to Duke when Williamson sat out 2nd half; Seminoles are 1-2 in true road games, with only win at Tulane. Boston College lost its last five games, is 0-4 in ACC, losing last two home games, by 27 to Virginia and a horrible OT loss to Hartford. Having hit 149 or more points on the "total" in eight straight games, forecasting an "over" 148.5 in Omaha games does not seem too unreasonable. So it goes for Sunday va. South Dakota, as the potent Mavs look to extend their "over" mark to 9-3 in a 12-game span. Meanwhile note the uptick in South Dakota scoring and four "overs" in five for the Coyotes. Charlotte Hornets vs. Indiana Pacers Preview and Predictions 2019-01-20

NBA Predictions 19th January 2019 by Gracenote
                          by Gracenote on 01/19/2019

The Charlotte Hornets have strung together three straight lopsided victories and aim for their first four-game winning streak of the season when they open a three-game road trip at the Indiana Pacers on Sunday. Kemba Walker led eight players in double figures with 21 points as the Hornets posted a 135-115 win over the Phoenix Suns on Saturday.

Charlotte's average margin of victory during the three-game run is 18 points and there is a building sense that the team has figured some things out on the offensive end. "Our ball movement was great," coach James Borrego told the media after his team shot 54.5 percent against Phoenix. "When we move the ball like that we are a dangerous offense." The Pacers have had some offensive success of late as well, averaging 121 points over their last three wins. Tyreke Evans paced a balanced attack with 19 points off the bench in Saturday's 111-99 triumph over Dallas as Indiana improved to 2-1 on its five-game homestand.

TV: 6 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Charlotte), FS Indiana

ABOUT THE HORNETS (22-23): While Borrego was quick to credit his team's offensive attack in the win over the Suns, others lauded a defensive effort that led to the success on the other end. "It started with our defense," guard Jeremy Lamb told reporters. "We got stops and were able to get out in transition and get some easy ones. And we moved the ball well tonight." Lamb hit five 3-pointers en route to 18 points while handing out a season-high six assists.

ABOUT THE PACERS (30-15): Evans is averaging 15.8 points in only 19.4 minutes over a five-game span as he begins to find his form following a December that saw him hampered by a knee issue. "I had a little knee problem when we played the Sixers [on Dec. 14] but now I'm healthy and getting in a rhythm," Evans told FS Indiana in a postgame interview. Evans' hot stretch has helped matters with leading scorer Victor Oladipo struggling through a 12-for-46 shooting slump over the last three games.

                          BUZZER BEATERS

                          1. Lamb scored 21 points to lead the Hornets to a 129-107 win at home in the first meeting Nov. 21.

                          2. Pacers PF Domantas Sabonis had 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting Saturday while making his lone 3-point attempt, improving to 6-for-8 from beyond the arc on the season.

                          3. Hornets C Willy Hernangomez has 29 rebounds in 43 minutes over his last two games.

                          PREDICTION: Pacers 108, Hornets 106

Phoenix Suns vs. Minnesota Timberwolves Preview and Predictions 2019-01-20

NBA Predictions 19th January 2019 by Gracenote
                            by Gracenote on 01/19/2019

After back-to-back losses to two of the better teams in the NBA, the Minnesota Timberwolves will try their hand against one of the worst when they host the Phoenix Suns on Sunday in the front end of a home-and-home set. The Timberwolves had won four of five prior to an ugly 149-107 loss at Philadelphia on Tuesday, and they were edged 116-113 by San Antonio in a return home Friday.

"We're a no-excuse team," coach Ryan Saunders told reporters after his team was whistled for 28 fouls, including six on star center Karl-Anthony Towns. "We made our own mistakes at times. We had opportunities to win. So, there's nothing on the officials." The Suns have lost the first three contests on their four-game road trip and they've given up at least 130 points in two of those defeats. They allowed the Charlotte Hornets to shoot 54.5 percent from the floor and dominate the glass by a 53-26 margin in Saturday's 135-115 loss. Devin Booker finished with 32 points and 11 assists at Charlotte as Phoenix fell to 4-19 on the road.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Arizona (Phoenix), FS North (Minnesota)

ABOUT THE SUNS (11-36): Saturday's loss was made even more difficult by the departures of rookie center Deandre Ayton (left ankle sprain) and reserve forward Richaun Holmes (left foot sprain). Kelly Oubre Jr. did his part with 24 points off the bench and, despite the lopsided loss, sees some positives on the horizon. "A lot of times it's up and down because we're still learning and growing, so I feel as if once we lock in on the little details of being great, everything else will follow suit," Oubre told reporters.

ABOUT THE TIMBERWOLVES (21-24): Towns tied his season low with 21 minutes as foul trouble hurt his cause against the Spurs, but the big man still finished with 23 points and is averaging 24.8 in January. Guard Derrick Rose, who combined with Towns for 53 points in a loss at Phoenix last month, also had 23 in Friday's loss while making all 11 of his free throws. His fellow reserves combined to score 11 points on 4-of-15 shooting as Minnesota fell to 11-17 against Western Conference opponents.

                            BUZZER BEATERS

                            1. Minnesota visits Phoenix on Tuesday to begin a three-game road trip.

                            2. Oubre is averaging 21 points and seven rebounds over his last four games.

                            3. Timberwolves PF Taj Gibson has four double-doubles in his last seven games after producing four in his first 37 contests.

                            PREDICTION: Timberwolves 117, Suns 107

A pair of teams heading in opposite directions in the Western Conference meet Sunday in San Antonio as the surging Spurs host the Los Angeles Clippers, losers of five straight. The Spurs have won eight of 11, a run that began when they knocked off the Clippers in Los Angeles on Dec. 29, after capping a 2-0 road trip with a 116-113 win at Minnesota on Friday.

LaMarcus Aldridge scored 25 points and Rudy Gay added 22 as San Antonio withstood the absence of leading scorer DeMar DeRozan (ankle), who is expected to return Sunday. "Coach [Gregg Popovich] said don't think about [DeRozan's injury] and play basketball, and we've got to win the game no matter what," forward Davis Bertans told reporters. The Clippers entered the Dec. 29 meeting with the Spurs with a 21-14 record but that setback ignited a 3-7 swoon. They shot just 36.5 percent from the floor in Friday's 112-94 loss to the Golden State Warriors to end an 0-4 homestand.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), FS Southwest (San Antonio)

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (24-21): Already without third-leading scorer Lou Williams (hamstring), Los Angeles lost second-leading scorer Danilo Gallinari (back spasms) early in Friday's loss. Coach Doc Rivers indicated that Gallinari is expected to miss the next couple of games, leaving more on the plate for fellow forward Tobias Harris, who scored 28 points against the Warriors. Reserve Montrezl Harrell can also help fill the void but he managed just four points - one more than his season low - in 27 minutes Friday.

ABOUT THE SPURS (27-20): DeRozan was probably in need of a night off amid a scoring slump that had seen him average 14.2 points - more than seven below his season average - on 36.9 percent shooting over the last five games. "When you play a lot of minutes, a lot of things accumulate that you've got to deal with, so it was kind of good just to get a rest," he told reporters Friday. "Don't play until Sunday, get some treatment. So, a couple days for me is going to be big." The 29-year-old is averaging 24.3 points, 7.7 rebounds and six assists in three matchups with the Clippers this season.

                              BUZZER BEATERS

                              1. Aldridge scored 38 points in 36 minutes in the Dec. 29 encounter.

                              2. Clippers rookie PG Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored a career high-tying 24 points Friday after producing a total of 26 over his previous five contests.

                              3. Popovich earned his 520th career road win Friday to tie Pat Riley for the most in NBA history. He will have a chance at No. 521 on Wednesday in Philadelphia.

                              PREDICTION: Spurs 117, Clippers 107

Washington Capitals vs. Chicago Blackhawks Preview and Predictions 2019-01-20

A visit from their former coach did little to provide a spark for the reigning Stanley Cup-champion Washington Capitals, who are in the midst of their longest losing streak in nearly two years. Having dropped four in a row to tumble out of first place in the Metropolitan Division, the Capitals will attempt to end their slide when they visit the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday afternoon.

The Capitals have scored only four goals during their skid following a 2-0 loss to the New York Islanders and coach Barry Trotz, who guided the franchise to its first Stanley Cup last season. "We're not generating enough offense," Washingon coach Todd Reirden told reporters. "We need to be better. That's right from the top of our list to the bottom of our list. We need more." The slumping Blackhawks might be the perfect cure to help the Capitals' offense get back on track - they have dropped five in a row and allowed at least four goals in each defeat. Chicago already has had a pair of eight-game losing streaks this season and has lost eight of its last 10 meetings with Washington, including a 4-2 road setback on Nov. 21.

TV: 12:30 p.m. ET, NBC, TVA

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (27-15-5): Washington's offensive funk includes just one even-strength goal over the last four games and a paltry 19 shots in Friday's loss, which marked only the second time it was shut out this season. "When we're playing our best offensively, we're skating, we play fast, we move the puck, we zip it around, we get lots of chances and we've got guys that can finish," defenseman Matt Niskanen told reporters. "Overall, we need a little bit more workmanlike attitude because right now, we're not feeling it." Braden Holtby made 37 saves in the November matchup to improve to 8-3-0 lifetime against Chicago.

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (16-24-9): Making a cameo appearance prior to Saturday's practice was No. 1 netminder Corey Crawford, who took some shots from goaltending coach Jimmy Waite. Crawford has been sidelined since suffering a concussion on Dec. 16 - he missed 47 games last season after sustaining a concussion heading into the holiday break - and his injury opened the door for rookie Collin Delia, who has posted a .929 save percentage despite facing an average of 38.8 shots in his eight starts. Patrick Kane extended his point streak to seven games with his 554th career assist, which tied him with Doug Wilson for third place on the franchise list.

                                OVERTIME

                                1. Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin, the league leader with 33 goals, has collected nine tallies and as many assists in 17 career games versus Chicago.

                                2. Kane has registered 10 goals and 21 points in 10 contests since the holiday break.

                                3. Blackhawks LW Brendan Perlini is in the concussion protocol and did not practice on Saturday.

                                PREDICTION: Capitals 5, Blackhawks 3
