Baylor Bears vs. Oklahoma Sooners Preview and Predictions 2019-01-28

NCAAB Predictions 27th January 2019 by Gracenote
    by Gracenote on 01/27/2019

Baylor will take a four-game win streak into Oklahoma on Monday in a quick turnaround for both programs as the Bears and Sooners each came away with Big 12/SEC Challenge victories on Saturday. Baylor escaped with a 73-68 win over Alabama in a tightly-contested matchup that saw 12 ties and 12 lead changes while Oklahoma had an easier time in an 86-55 rout of Vanderbilt.

Since losing sophomore Tristan Clark and his 14.3 points per game to a season-ending knee injury on Jan. 5, Baylor has seen seven players increase their scoring averages including sophomore Mario Kegler, who led the Bears in Saturday's victory with team-highs of 17 points and seven rebounds. "Every game we've won, its' been a team effort, different people contributing in different ways," Baylor coach Scott Drew told reporters. "As a coach, it's a little trickier, because you don't know whose day it is. At the same time, the great thing is as long as they keep the team first, then they're cheering on each other and it doesn't become an 'I' thing." The Sooners used a 19-0 run in the first half against Vanderbilt to avoid having to rally from a large deficit as they had done in their 70-61 win Wednesday against Oklahoma State, battling back from 19 points down. "I thought they came out of the locker room with the right attitude. Playing each possession, continuing to score," Sooners coach Lon Kruger told the media. "I think that kept the energy level up. Over time, I thought we were pretty solid defensively as well."

    TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPNU

ABOUT BAYLOR (13-6, 4-2 Big 12): Freshman Jared Butler has seen the biggest improvement in the five games since Clark's injury as the guard is averaging 6.7 more points per outing and is shooting 42 percent from 3-point range (14-for-33) after connecting on just 10-of-44 from behind the arc through the first 14 contests. Alabama had outrebounded 17 of its first 18 opponents entering Saturday's contest before the Bears prevailed with a 35-31 advantage on the boards and outscored the Crimson Tide 18-9 on second chance points. Makai Mason was the only Baylor player outside Kegler to hit double figures Saturday as the senior tallied 13 points - the career-best 11th consecutive game he's scored 10 or more.

ABOUT OKLAHOMA (15-5, 3-4): After finishing with a season-low five points in Oklahoma's comeback victory Wednesday, senior Christian James bounced back against Vanderbilt with a team-high 21 points on 8-for-15 shooting. James, a 6-4 guard, sits fourth in the Big 12 in scoring (16.8) and rebounding (7.4) - leading the Sooners in both categories. Kruger inserted senior Rashard Odomes into the starting lineup in a Jan. 19 loss to Texas and the guard has not disappointed as he's combined to shoot 16-for-22 from the floor in his three starts while averaging 12 points in 24 minutes - well above his season marks of 6.8 points and 15.6 minutes.

    TIP-INS

    1. Oklahoma leads the series 45-15 but the schools have 10 wins apiece since the Bears snapped a 30-game losing streak to the Sooners in 2010.

    2. Baylor F Mark Vital entered Sunday sitting sixth nationally in offensive rebound percentage (16.4) and is one of two players in the country with more offensive rebounds (73) than defensive (66).

    3. The Bears have scored 73 points in four of their last six games while their opponents have scored 73 in the other two (a 73-68 Baylor loss to Kansas on Jan. 12 and an 85-73 win at West Virginia on Jan. 21).

    PREDICTION: Oklahoma 73, Baylor 70

Texas Christian Horned Frogs vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders Preview and Predictions 2019-01-28

NCAAB Predictions 27th January 2019 by Gracenote
      by Gracenote on 01/27/2019

After losing its third straight game and scoring the fewest points since the 2014-15 season, Texas Tech coach Chris Beard expressed his desire for finding options to help leading scorer Jarrett Culver. Italian Davide Moretti answered the call Saturday when he scored a career-high 21 points in a win over Arkansas, and the 6-3 guard will try to continue increasing his production as the 13th-ranked Red Raiders return to Big 12 play against visiting TCU on Monday night.

Moretti, who averaged 12.3 minutes in 37 games last season, is averaging 10.4 points this season in 29.8 minutes - including 13.3 points in his last eight games - and connecting on 39.7 percent of his shots from beyond the arc overall. "Last year (Moretti) played a nice role as a young player in this league, he played his best basketball in March ... (He) had a great summer and offseason and he is trying to find that next level. To win in this league, the SEC is no different, to win a BCS game you have to have three or four people show up and play great and Moro is starting to find some consistency where he is one of those guys that we are relying on." TCU is coming off a 55-50 win over Florida in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge on Saturday, holding the Gators to three points in the first 11:35 of the game to build an 18-3 lead. Texas Tech has been exceptional at home, posting an 11-1 record and limiting its opponents to 52 points per game and 32.8 percent shooting, while TCU is 1-3 in true road games this season.

      TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT TCU (15-4, 3-3 Big 12): Sophomore forward Kouat Noi scored 22 points and junior guard Desmond Bane added 17 against Florida as the Horned Frogs improved to 10-1 at home this season. Bane ranks seventh in the Big 12 with 15 points per game while Noi, who has drained a 3-pointer in 18 straight contests, ranks ninth at 14.7 and senior guard Alex Robinson is third in the nation at 7.7 assists per game - leaving him 10 away from matching Corey Santee's school record of 575 assists. The Horned Frogs are averaging 76.9 points, which ranks third in the Big 12, and are top 50 in both offensive (40th) and defensive efficiency (18th).

ABOUT TEXAS TECH (16-4, 4-3): Culver had 15 points, four assists, three steals along with four 3-pointers against Arkansas and leads the Red Raiders with 18.5 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game. Guard Matt Mooney added 12 points in the victory and is third in scoring (10.3), but senior Tariq Owens has chipped in eight points per game and is one of the nation's blocked shot leaders (2.5). The Red Raiders have limited opponents to a national-best 35.7 percent from the field, rank second in the country in scoring defense (56.3) and are third in 3-point shooting defense (26.1 percent).

      TIP-INS

      1. Texas Tech leads the all-time series against TCU by an 81-51 margin, including wins in both matchups last season.

      2. TCU F JD Miller is 48 points away from 1,000 career points, Bane is 25 shy and Robinson 16.

      3. The Red Raiders trailed at halftime against Arkansas for the ninth time this season, but responded with its sixth win in those situations.

PREDICTION: Texas Tech 67, TCU 65

        Big Monday Tip Sheet
        David Schwab

A new week of betting college hoops gets underway this Monday night with a pair of matchups involving two of the top teams in the nation. As part of ESPN’s Big Monday doubleheader, the ACC’s No. 2 Duke Blue Devils will be on the road against Notre Dame.

The other matchup is a Big 12 battle between TCU and the No. 14 Texas Tech Red Raiders. As a bonus game in the Big 12, Baylor will be on the road against Oklahoma to close out Monday night’s betting action.

No. 2 Duke Blue Devils at Notre Dame Fighting Irish (ESPN , 7 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Duke -13, Total 151

        Betting Matchup

Saturday’s 66-53 victory against Georgia Tech moved the Blue Devils to 6-1 straight-up in the ACC. However, after failing to cover as heavy 22 ½-point home favorites they slipped to 1-4 against the spread in their last five games. Duke is 17-2 SU with an 11-8 record ATS. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in 14 of its first 19 games. Freshman guard Tre Jones was back in the lineup on Saturday after missing his last two starts with a shoulder injury. Freshman forward RJ Barrett led the team in scoring in that game with 24 points.

Notre Dame started play in the ACC with an 81-66 loss to Virginia Tech as an 11-point road underdog. It dropped to 1-6 SU in the conference with Saturday’s 82-55 beatdown by Virginia as a 12-point underdog at home. The Fighting Irish have failed to cover in six of those games as part of a dismal 2-8 record ATS over their last 10 outings. The total has stayed UNDER in five of their last eight contests. Junior forward John Mooney continues to lead the team in scoring with 14.5 points per game. With 15 points against Virginia, he has exceeded that average in each of his last five starts.

        Betting Trends

-- The Blue Devils are 5-2 ATS in their last seven Monday games with the total going OVER in six of their last eight games played on that day.

-- The Fighting Irish have gone 0-5 ATS in their last five games following a SU loss. The total has stayed UNDER in seven of their last 10 games coming off a SU loss.

-- The favorite has covered in the last four meetings and the total has gone OVER in five of the last six games between the two.

TCU Horned Frogs at No. 14 Texas Tech Red Raiders (ESPN, 8 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Texas Tech -5, Total 131

        Betting Matchup

TCU beat Florida on Saturday 55-50 as a 3 ½-point home favorite as part of the SEC/Big 12 Challenge. This was on the heels of a tight 65-61 victory at home against Texas as three-point favorites. The Horned Frogs are 3-2 SU in their last five games with a 4-1 record ATS. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in five of their last six games. Sophomore forward Kouat Noi led the way in Saturday’s win with 22 points in a game that TCU never trailed.

The Red Raiders faced Arkansas in their matchup against the SEC and squeezed out a 67-64 win as 10-point home favorites. This followed three losses in a row both SU and ATS. Texas Tech is 16-4 SU with a 6-13-1 record ATS. The total has stayed UNDER the closing line in 14 of those 20 games. A pair of sophomore guards led the way on Saturday with Davide Moretti scoring a game-high 21 points along with Jarrett Culver’s 15 points.

        Betting Trends

-- The Horned Frogs have gone 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games following a SU win and the total has stayed UNDER in five of their last six road games.

-- The Red Raiders have failed to cover in their last five home games with one contest ending as a PUSH. The total gone OVER in four of those five games.

-- The road team is 13-3-1 ATS in the last 17 meetings and the total has gone OVER in six of the last eight matchups.

Baylor Bears at Oklahoma Sooners (ESPNU, 9 p.m. ET)

        Opening Odds: Oklahoma -6 ½, Total 140

        Betting Matchup

The Bears’ current winning streak reached four games both SU and ATS with Saturday’s 73-68 victory at home against Alabama. The total stayed UNDER 143 ½ points in that game after going OVER in their previous six games. Baylor is 4-2 SU (5-1 ATS) in Big 12 play as part of an overall record of 13-6. The combination of sophomore guard Mario Kegler and senior guard Makai Mason accounted for 30 of the Bears’ 73 points in Saturday’s win. Baylor is averaging 72.2 PPG and Mason leads the team with 15.5 PPG.

Oklahoma streaked past Vanderbilt 86-55 in its SEC matchup on Saturday to easily cover as a 9 ½-point home favorite. This followed a shaky 3-4 SU (4-2-1 ATS) start in Big 12 play. The Sooners are 15-5 SU overall with a profitable 15-3-2 record ATS. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in 13 of 20 games. Senior guard Christian James is averaging a team-high 16.8 PPG and he posted a game-high 21 points in Saturday’s romp. He has now scored at least 20 points in three of his last four starts.

        Betting Trends

-- The Bears are 5-1 ATS in their last six games following a SU win and the total has gone OVER in their last five Monday games.

-- The Sooners have an 8-1-1 record ATS in their last 10 games following a SU win and the total has stayed UNDER in seven of their last nine home games.

-- Baylor has covered in four of its last five road games against Oklahoma and the total has stayed UNDER in four of the last five meetings overall.

          Top 25 Betting Recap
          Joe Williams

Each week until March Madness we'll take a look at how the Top 25 fared from college basketball, but straight up and against the number, while also taking a look at their upcoming schedule.

Maryland (16-5 SU, 10-10-1 ATS) had a surprisingly difficult week. There was certainly no shame losing to Michigan State (18-3 SU, 16-5 ATS) at Breslin Center in East Lansing, although they put up very little resistance in the 69-55 loss as 8 1/2-point underdogs. However, it was a complete shocker to see them take it on the chin against a terrible Illinois (6-14 SU, 8-12 ATS) side in a neutral-site battle at Madison Square Garden in New York City. It's the third year in a row the Big Ten scheduled a random conference game at MSG, and the lack of success as far as attendance likely will make this a thing of the past. Maryland certainly won't be volunteering to take part again after what could be a costly loss.

Iowa (16-5 SU, 10-11 ATS) had a bad week likely the Terps. The Hawkeyes entered their game against Michigan State on Thursday with optimism. They left their home court with an 82-67 loss and doubts. They looked to get back momentum on Sunday afternoon in Minnesota (15-5 SU, 9-11 ATS), but their road woes, especially against the number, continued. The Hawkeyes slipped to 5-12-1 ATS over the past 18 road contests, and that could be their undoing as they jockey down the stretch. It might also get Iowa onto a much lower line in the NCAA Tournament than we anticipated for them even just last week. Minnesota could be visiting the Top 25 soon with 15 wins, but they're still just 4-7 ATS in the past 11 overall and 2-6 ATS at home over the past eight even after the win.

Virginia (18-1 SU, 16-3 ATS) rebounded nicely after their narrow loss and backdoor cover at Duke (17-2 SU, 11-8 ATS) last weekend, blasting both Wake Forest (8-11 SU, 8-11 ATS) and Notre Dame (11-9 SU, 7-13 ATS) by a combined 50 points, and by at least 23 points in each. They'll be facing a difficult gauntlet over the next four games with trips to N.C. State (16-4 SU, 12-8 ATS) and North Carolina (15-4 SU, 11-6-2 ATS) bookending a pair of home games against Miami-Florida (9-10 SU, 6-13 ATS) and Duke on Feb. 9. The Hoos enter the new week on a 10-game cover streak, best in the nation right now.

Buffalo (18-2 SU, 12-6-1 ATS) is now tied for first place in the MAC East Division after a stunning loss to a mediocre Northern Illinois (11-9 SU, 12-6 ATS) this past week. As a result, you can expect the Bulls will be treated rather harshly and they'll freefall down the Top 25 rankings, potentially into the 20's. Iowa and Mississippi (14-5 SU, 15-4 ATS) could be exiting the rankings are a pair of 0-2 SU/ATS weeks. Mississippi State (15-4 SU, 9-10 ATS) will look to add to the woes of the Rebels, trying to return the favor after losing on their home court to Ole Miss on Jan. 12.

Houston (20-1 SU, 14-6-1 ATS) is likely to take a big jump up the rankings this week after two more wins and covers. They suffer from the same thing UCF did in football, as the American Athletic Conference just doesn't seem to move the needle for the voters in The Associated Press or Coaches Poll. The Cougars will likely elevate with plenty of teams in front of them losing, however. And they're the first team in the nation to 20 victories. That has to count for something, doesn't it?

Purdue (14-6 SU, 12-8 ATS) is likely heading back to the Top 25 after winning at skidding Ohio State (13-6 SU, 8-11 ATS) before curb-stomping Michigan State (18-3 SU, 16-5 ATS) by a 73-63 score in West Lafayette. The Boilers have now won and covered five in a row heading into the new week, so watch them. Florida State (15-5 SU, 8-11-1 ATS) could be poised for a return to the Top 25 after a pair of wins, including a 78-66 win at Miami on Sunday. They have covered back-to-back games for the first time since Nov. 19-22. Kansas State (15-5 SU, 10-10 ATS) should also pierce the rankings, as they're tied atop the Big 12 standings with their rivals from across the state. The Wildcats have covered four of the past five, and the 'under' is 10-3 across the past 13 for those who love betting totals.

                    Monday's Tip Sheet
                    Kevin Rogers

Game of the Night: Warriors at Pacers – 7:05 PM EST

The runaway train known as the Golden State Warriors (35-14 SU, 22-26-1 ATS) is steamrolling through the league once again. The two-time defending champions finished off their 10th consecutive victory in Saturday’s 115-111 triumph over the Celtics as a 3 ½-point road favorites. Kevin Durant led the Warriors with 33 points, while Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson combined for 45 points. Golden State is riding a nine-game winning streak away from Oracle Arena, while going 13-1 SU and 8-6 ATS in the past 14 games away from the Bay Area.

The Pacers (32-16 SU, 25-23 ATS) are dealing with life after Victor Oladipo as the guard is sidelined for the rest of the season following a gruesome leg injury suffered last Wednesday against Toronto. In the first game post-Oladipo, Indiana fell behind early at Memphis on Saturday and never recovered in a 106-103 setback as five-point favorites. The loss ended a three-game winning streak for the Pacers, while Indiana sailed OVER the total for the first time in five contests.

Indiana is listed as a home underdog for the fourth time this season, as the Pacers own a perfect 3-0 SU/ATS mark after beating the Celtics, Jazz, and Bucks at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The Pacers swept the Warriors last season, but those results are skewed as Golden State played without Curry, Thompson, Durant, and Draymond Green in a 92-81 home defeat. In the second matchup in Indianapolis, Curry remained sidelined in a 126-106 victory by the Pacers as a short ‘dog, ending a two-game home skid to the Warriors.

                    Boston Bounce-Back?

The Celtics (30-19 SU, 25-24 ATS) saw their five-game winning streak come to a halt in Saturday’s 115-111 setback to the Warriors. Boston and Golden State went back-and-forth in the fourth quarter, but the Celtics scored only thee points in the final 2:30 minutes to suffer its first home loss since December 21 to Milwaukee.

Boston welcomes in Brooklyn for their third meeting this month as the two Atlantic division rivals have split the first two matchups. The Celtics routed the Nets at TD Garden, 116-95 as 10 ½-point favorites on January 7, but Brooklyn bounced back a week later at home, 109-102 as 2 ½-point underdogs. Kyrie Irving sat out in the contest at Barclays Center as the Nets outscored the Celtics, 44-21 in the fourth quarter. Both matchups finished UNDER the total, while Boston has won five straight home meetings with Brooklyn.

The Nets (27-23 SU, 28-22 ATS) have vaulted to the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs heading into Monday’s action, while seeking their seventh straight victory. Brooklyn will be without bench spark Spencer Dinwiddie (17.2 ppg) for the next month with torn ligaments in his right thumb. The Nets have won four of their last six games away from Barclays Center, but Brooklyn owns an 0-3 SU/ATS record as a double-digit underdog this season.

                    Rocky Road

The Nuggets (33-15 SU, 27-21 ATS) continue to dominate at home by improving to 22-4 at Pepsi Center following Saturday’s 126-110 victory over the short-handed 76ers. Nikola Jokic kept up his MVP-caliber season by scoring 32 points, pulling down 18 rebounds, and dishing out 10 assists for Denver, who cashed the OVER for the seventh straight game.

However, Denver has struggled on the highway by compiling an 11-11 record, while starting the season with an 8-4 road mark. Seven losses in the last 10 road games doesn’t bode well for the Nuggets, who play six of the next seven away from Pepsi Center, starting Monday in Memphis.

The Grizzlies (20-30 SU, 20-30 ATS) snapped an eight-game losing streak in Saturday’s 106-103 mild upset of the Pacers as five-point home underdogs. Memphis pulled off this win after losing to Sacramento the night before, as the Grizzlies started this five-game homestand at 0-3. The Grizzlies and Nuggets have split two meetings this season with the home team winning each time, while Memphis knocked off Denver at FedEx Forum as short underdogs in November.

                    Four Score

The Clippers (28-22 SU, 28-22 ATS) have gone through plenty of ups and downs this season, but Los Angeles is currently on the uptick. Following a five-game skid earlier this month, the Clippers have won four of their last five contests, while seeking their fourth consecutive win on Monday. Los Angeles topped Sacramento for the third time this season in Sunday’s 122-108 triumph at Staples Center. The Clippers knocked down 27-of-29 free throws, while Montrezl Harrell posted 25 points off the bench on 11-of-13 shooting.

Los Angeles is playing with no rest for the ninth time this season, compiling a 4-4 SU and 5-3 ATS mark, while hitting the OVER six times. The Clippers host the Hawks (15-33 SU, 21-27 ATS), who are in the midst of five straight road games against Western Conference opponents. Atlanta lost at Portland on Saturday, 120-111 as 8 ½-point underdogs, but received a solid output from rookie Trae Young, who scored 30 points on 11-of-15 from the floor. The Hawks will be looking to avenge a 127-119 home loss to the Clippers in November, as L.A. outscored Atlanta, 38-23 in the fourth to cash as 6 ½-point favorites.

                    All Knicked Up

It’s been a long season in the Big Apple, as the Knicks (10-38 SU, 21-26 ATS) sit at the bottom of the Atlantic division. New York lost its ninth straight game in Sunday’s defeat to Miami, while dropping 11 consecutive contests at Madison Square Garden. The Knicks will try to turn around their luck with a trip to Charlotte looking to beat the Hornets for the second time this season.

The last time the Knicks faced the Hornets on December 14, New York trailed Charlotte by 19 points late in the fourth quarter before rallying to force overtime. The Knicks shocked the Hornets, 126-124 as 10-point underdogs to pick up their only win in a 14-game span from December 3 through January 1. New York owns a respectable 4-2 ATS mark in its last six games away from the Garden, although the Knicks only picked up one victory, which came against the Lakers earlier this month.

The Hornets (23-25 SU, 25-23 ATS) squandered an 11-point lead heading into the fourth quarter in Friday’s 108-99 setback at Milwaukee. Although Charlotte covered as 11-point underdogs, the Bucks outscored the Hornets in the final 12 minutes, 32-12, while Kemba Walker shot 3-of-12 from the floor for 10 points. The Hornets improved to 5-1 ATS the last six games, as Charlotte won its past two home contests by double-digits over Phoenix and Sacramento.
