Washington Capitals vs. New York Islanders Preview and Predictions 2019-03-01

NHL Predictions 1st March 2019 by Gracenote
                      by Gracenote on 03/01/2019

The New York Islanders look to pull off an impressive back-to-back sweep and increase their lead in the Metropolitan Division when they host the Washington Capitals on Friday. The Islanders registered a resounding 6-1 victory over Toronto and former captain John Tavares on Thursday to move two points ahead of the reigning Stanley Cup-champion Capitals.

"Obviously, an emotional game," New York goaltender Robin Lehner told Newsday of Tavares' first game back since leaving as a free agent. "But I was very impressed with how we kept everything in check and did everything we should do." The Islanders, who have one game in hand on Washington, received at least a point from all 12 forwards and posted their highest goal total since just after Christmas in Thursday's triumph to improve to 1-1-0 on their five-game homestand. The Capitals, who are beginning a stretch during which they play seven of nine on the road, continue to apply pressure as they've won four of their last five contests after rallying from a two-goal deficit for a 7-2 victory over Ottawa on Tuesday. "That was a pretty good push from us tonight, and that was exciting to watch our team play like that, (with) the enthusiasm, the buy-in, the excitement," Washington coach Todd Reirden told reporters after Tuesday's win. "Today was the first time that you could feel it, that this is the group, and that we're all in this together."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBCS Washington Plus, MSG Plus (New York)

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (36-21-7): Captain Alex Ovechkin continues to produce, recording six of his league-best 44 goals during a seven-game point streak that also has seen him notch four assists to pull within four points of 1,200 for his career. John Carlson has registered eight of his 57 points - fourth among all NHL defensemen - over the last seven contests and is fourth on the team behind Ovechkin (74), Nicklas Backstrom (60) and Evgeny Kuznetsov (58). T.J. Oshie (297 career assists) scored twice on Tuesday to reach 20 goals for the third time in four seasons since being acquired from St. Louis.

ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (37-19-7): Captain Anders Lee scored his fourth goal in six contests on Thursday after suffering through an 11-game drought and leads the team with 22 - two more than Brock Nelson, who has recorded seven points in his last six games. Mathew Barzal notched his 98th career assist against Toronto to push his team-leading total to 52 points while Josh Bailey set up one tally to move within two of his third straight 50-point campaign. Lehner rode a 34-save performance to his 20th victory on Thursday, which could give Thomas Greiss (17-9-2) the start against Washington.

                      OVERTIME

                      1. Washington RW Tom Wilson has recorded 33 points in 45 games this season and scored three times in his last four contests.

                      2. New York LW Anthony Beauvillier, who has scored twice in three games, is slated to play in his 200th NHL contest on Friday.

                      3. The road team won the first two meetings of the season series, which concludes on April 6 in Washington.

                      PREDICTION: Capitals 4, Islanders 3

Montreal Canadiens vs. New York Rangers Preview and Predictions 2019-03-01

NHL Predictions 28th February 2019 by Gracenote
                        by Gracenote on 02/28/2019

Coming off their highest goal output in nearly 15 months, the Montreal Canadiens are trying to maintain their tenuous hold on a wild-card spot while navigating a rugged stretch that features just one home game in a two-week span. With a three-game trek to California upcoming next week, Montreal winds up a four-game road trip at the New York Rangers on Friday night.

The Canadiens had dropped six of eight games (2-5-1) overall and five straight away from home before erupting for five second-period goals in an 8-1 drubbing of Detroit on Tuesday. "Every team goes into slumps at some point during the year," Montreal coach Claude Julien said. "We needed to get out of it really quickly because of the time of the season." New York is 6-6-3 since the All-Star break and is coming off consecutive overtime losses to reigning Stanley Cup champion Washington and league-best Tampa Bay. "If that's what we're going to do against the elite teams in the league, I like the direction we're going," said Rangers coach David Quinn, whose team has split two meetings with the Canadiens this season.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, RDS, TSN2 (Montreal), MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE CANADIENS (34-23-7): Julien reunited the line of Max Domi, Jonathan Drouin and Andrew Shaw against Detroit and the trio erupted for a dozen points, including a hat trick by Shaw and a career-high five-point game from Domi. Carey Price has allowed seven goals in the two matchups against the Rangers this season but will get the start Friday and may be brought back for Saturday's home game versus Pittsburgh. "As far as back-to-back, as usual I never make those decisions until after the game," Julien said. "We don't know what's going to happen tomorrow night, so we're going to re-evaluate after the game."

ABOUT THE RANGERS (27-26-10): Rookie forward Brendan Lemieux, a trade-deadline acquisition from Winnipeg, played a career-high 15:24 in his New York debut and registered a game-best seven hits with two blocked shots against the Lightning. "I'm really fortunate to be here. I'm really happy to be here," Lemieux said. "Getting an opportunity is all I've ever asked for, and I'm getting it." Mika Zibanejad scored his team-leading 27th goal Wednesday, matching his career high that he established in 2017-18, and has thrived against Montreal with one goal and three assists in two meetings this season.

                        OVERTIME

                        1. Rangers D Tony DeAngelo has nine assists during a career-best eight-game point streak.

                        2. Canadiens F Paul Byron sat out Thursday's practice due to the flu.

                        3. Rangers F Jimmy Vesey has scored a goal and notched multiple points in three straight games.

                        PREDICTION: Rangers 3, Canadiens 2

The Philadelphia Flyers did not get the result they hoped for in the opener of their three-game road trip, but they still managed to remain within reach of a postseason berth. Philadelphia hopes for a better outcome when it continues its trek Friday against the New Jersey Devils.

The Flyers squandered a lead but managed to forge a tie before dropping a 4-3 overtime decision at Columbus on Thursday and climbed within six points of Carolina for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference. Defenseman Travis Sanheim helped Philadelphia earn a point by scoring his second goal of the night with 6:48 remaining in the third period, giving him three tallies in his last two games and at least one point in five of his last six contests. New Jersey split the first two contests of its three-game homestand, finishing on both sides of a 2-1 decision. Kevin Rooney scored the lone goal in Wednesday's loss to Calgary, giving him a point in back-to-back games after registering a total of three over his first 23 contests this season.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBCS Philadelphia, MSG Plus 2 (New Jersey)

ABOUT THE FLYERS (30-26-8): Jakub Voracek's brief slump appears to be over as the 29-year-old Czech has recorded three goals and as many assists over his last three games - tallying in each contest. Voracek, who is seven goals shy of 200 for his career, endured a three-game point drought after collecting four tallies and seven assists during a nine-game streak. Captain Claude Giroux has notched two goals and three assists over his last three contests and needs one tally to reach the 20-goal plateau for the seventh time in his career.

ABOUT THE DEVILS (25-31-8): Mirco Mueller could be out of the lineup for a while after leaving Wednesday's game on a stretcher and being hospitalized with an upper-body injury. The 23-year-old Swiss defenseman, who crashed head-first into the boards early in the third period, took to Twitter on Thursday to announce his injury isn't serious and that he hopes to return to action soon. New Jersey announced that Taylor Hall underwent successful left knee surgery earlier this week and will begin rehabilitation immediately.

                          OVERTIME

                          1. Devils D Sami Vatanen blocked three shots in 22 minutes, 12 seconds of ice time on Wednesday after missing the previous 14 games with a concussion.

                          2. Philadelphia RW Travis Konecny has collected seven goals and eight assists over his last 17 games.

                          3. New Jersey has gone five games without a power-play goal after recording at least one in each of its previous five contests.

                          PREDICTION: Flyers 4, Devils 3

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Buffalo Sabres Preview and Predictions 2019-03-01

                            by Gracenote on 02/28/2019

The Buffalo Sabres have dropped six of their last seven outings (1-5-1) to see their once-promising postseason aspirations grow dimmer by the day. The Sabres look to get back on track and defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins for the second time this season when the clubs meet on Friday at KeyBank Center in Buffalo.

"I think it's just disappointing because it's a game of mistakes, and right now we are making more mistakes than any team," Buffalo coach Phil Housley said on the heels of Tuesday's 3-2 setback to Philadelphia. Captain Jack Eichel scored versus the Flyers to boost his point streak to six games (four goals, four assists) heading into the tilt with Pittsburgh, against which he tallied 45 seconds into overtime in a 5-4 win on Nov. 19. The contest marked the Sabres' second victory in the last 11 encounters with the Penguins, who began their three-game road trip with a 5-2 triumph over Columbus on Tuesday. Superstar captain Sidney Crosby collected a goal and an assist in his second consecutive contests to lift his point total to 16 (four goals, 12 assists) in his last nine contests.

                            TV: 7 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Pittsburgh, Sportsnet, MSG-B (Buffalo)

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (33-22-8): Chad Ruhwedel sustained an arm/shoulder injury versus the Blue Jackets to join fellow defensemen Kris Letang (upper body), Brian Dumoulin (concussion) and Olli Maatta (upper body) as well as forward Bryan Rust (lower body) on the sideline. "We just have to have a next-man-up mentality," coach Mike Sullivan said. "That's how we've always approached it. We believe we have depth in our organization. We have capable people." Pittsburgh is hoping Zach Trotman and Erik Gudbranson are two of those "capable people," with the first blue-liner in line to play in his second NHL contest this season while the latter will make his debut with the club after being acquired from Vancouver prior to the NHL trade deadline on Monday.

ABOUT THE SABRES (29-26-8): Jeff Skinner, who set up defenseman Zach Bogosian's second-period goal against the Penguins, has an assist in three straight games and four of his last five. Although Carter Hutton turned aside 36 shots to defeat Pittsburgh in the first meeting, the goaltender's availability for the rematch is in question after he tweaked an existing lower-body injury during Thursday's practice. The 33-year-old left the session as a precaution and will be evaluated prior to Friday's contest, per Housley.

                            OVERTIME

                            1. Pittsburgh C Evgeni Malkin has 27 points (nine goals, 18 assists) in his last 21 games.

                            2. Sabres C Casey Mittlestadt, who scored in the first meeting with the Penguins, snapped a four-game goal drought on Tuesday.

                            3. Pittsburgh C Jake Guentzel, who scored in the first encounter with Buffalo, netted just five of his team-leading 29 goals in February.

                            PREDICTION: Sabres 5, Penguins 4

St. Louis Blues vs. Carolina Hurricanes Preview and Predictions 2019-03-01

The St. Louis Blues surged into playoff contention in the Western Conference by setting a franchise record for wins in February. So did the Carolina Hurricanes in the East. Two of the hottest clubs in hockey, St. Louis and Carolina will try to carry their momentum into this month when the Blues pay a visit to the Hurricanes on Friday night.

St. Louis used a 10-game winning streak to post a blistering 12-1-1 record last month and recorded its fifth shutout during that span by blanking Nashville 2-0 on Tuesday night. "We were in last place when January started," forward Vladimir Tarasenko said. "There's no thinking about how many you've won at home or on the road. We just try to win every game. We try to keep it rolling." The Hurricanes capped a 10-3-0 month with a 6-1 mauling of the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday to extend their winning streak to three games. "If we play like that, we're going to have a really good chance to be in the playoffs," goaltender Petr Mrazek said. "We have 19 games left and we have to do the same job we did in February."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FS Midwest (St. Louis), FS Carolina

ABOUT THE BLUES (34-23-6): Rookie Jordan Binnington is 15-2-1 since he was promoted from the minors on Jan. 7 and became only the second netminder in the modern era to notch five shutouts in his first 18 starts. Alex Steen will return to the lineup but Brayden Schenn remains a question mark while David Perron will not not fly to Carolina. "They looked good to me, but it's how they feel," coach Craig Berube said of Perron and Schenn, who both are dealing with concussions. "They want to feel the right way and I don't blame them. It's important. When they feel like they're ready, they'll let us know."

ABOUT THE HURRICANES (34-23-6): Carolina suffered a slew of injuries in Tuesday's drubbing of Los Angeles, but forward Micheal Ferland returned to practice while coach Rod Brind'Amour said he was "optimistic" over the status of Justin Faulk and Calvin de Haan, although neither defenseman practiced Thursday. Sebastian Aho scored his team-leading 25th goal Tuesday and joined Eric Staal (2005-06) as the only player in team history to register 70 points before his 22nd birthday. Jordan Staal has shown no signs of rust after missing two months due to a concussion, notching four points in his first two games back.

                              1. Tarasenko had 10 goals and 22 points in 14 games last month.

                              2. Aho had 13 points in 13 games last month but has just one assist in five meetings versus St. Louis.

                              3. Blues leading scorer Ryan O'Reilly has five goals and as many assists in 16 games against Carolina.

Nashville Predators vs. Winnipeg Jets Preview and Predictions 2019-03-01

The Winnipeg Jets and Nashville Predators are vying for Central Division supremacy, although neither team is looking much like a contender of late. The sputtering Jets, who have lost five of their last six (1-4-1), look to overtake the first-place Predators on Friday when the clubs reconvene at Bell MTS Place.

"We haven't had a juiceless game against Nashville in a long time. They've been full of emotion, intensity, and penalties," Winnipeg coach Paul Maurice said on Thursday. "They get new guys in, we get new guys in, they're not bragging about their last 10 games, neither are we. But the edge will be right (on Friday)." Patrik Laine has found his scoring touch since being paired with captain Blake Wheeler and Mark Scheifele, snapping a 15-game goal drought by tallying in three straight contests to push his point streak to four games (four goals, two assists). Nashville has struggled with its offense of late, getting shut out in two of the last three outings while mustering 21 goals scored in its last 10 contests (4-5-1). The Predators, who have split the first two games of the season series with the Jets, began a string of four straight contests versus Central Division rivals with a 2-0 setback at St. Louis on Tuesday.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Tennessee (Nashville), TSN3 (Winnipeg)

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (37-24-5): Rugged forward Wayne Simmonds registered two shots in 15:46 of ice time in his debut with the Predators since being acquired from Philadelphia prior to Monday's trade deadline. "When your goalie (Juuse Saros, 43 saves) is playing like that and he's keeping you in the game, he's giving you a chance and you don't get something for him, it's a little bit disappointing," the 30-year-old Simmonds said. "He played unbelievable. It's my first time not playing against him, but he played great." Mikael Granlund, who was acquired from Minnesota on Monday, is expected to play versus the Jets after missing the game against the Blues to celebrate the birth of his first child.

ABOUT THE JETS (37-22-4): Kyle Connor and Wheeler each had an assist in Tuesday's 3-2 setback to Minnesota to boost their respective point streaks to five and four games apiece. Maurice elected to tinker with his lines during Thursday's practice, shuffling Connor on the wing with trade acquisition Kevin Hayes and Nikolaj Ehlers while Bryan Little was moved from center to wing to join Adam Lowry and Brandon Tanev. "I was expecting some changes to be made with the new guys here. Going to wing was a definite possibility. ... It's different but it's something I don't mind doing," said the 31-year-old Little, who logged just 12:51 of ice time against the Wild.

                                OVERTIME

                                1. Nashville C Ryan Johansen, who leads the team in assists (42) and points (53), has been held off the scoresheet in each of the last six games.

                                2. Winnipeg G Connor Hellebuyck has yielded 20 goals in his last five starts (2-3-0).

                                3. Predators G Pekka Rinne turned aside all 29 shots he faced in a 3-0 win versus the Jets on Oct. 11.

                                PREDICTION: Jets 4, Predators 3
