Carolina got hot over the second half of the season and managed to work its way into the Eastern Conference playoff mix. Its first opponent was not a favorable one though, as the Hurricanes went 0-4 in the regular season series vs. the Capitals. Washington leaves the nation’s capital with a 2-0 series lead and after its 4-3 OT win in Game 2, I have a hard time seeing the Hurricanes mentally getting back into this series. Key players, both up front and at the back end, are playing at their best right now for the defending champs and I see no reason not to believe that that momentum won’t get carried over here as well. Additionally note that the Capitals are already 8-4 (+2.6 units) this year after playing three straight home games, while Carolina is now 16-21 (-7.3 units) this season vs. clubs with winning records. With a chance to take a strangle-hold on this series, I expect the Capitals to continue their domination of this match-up.

Also, the 3-1 extra innings win certainly lifted the spirits of Philadelphia heading into this showdown with the Mets. As for New York's situation, they are off a loss yesterday and it was a night game and it was on the road and the Mets are again on the road here. From a situational standpoint, the Phillies hold some key edges here. In terms of the pitching match-up here, Noah Syndergaard has given up 4 homers in his 5 career starts at Citizens Bank Park and this is the most potent Phillies lineup he will have faced. His numbers overall against the Phillies are solid but he has just 1 win in his last 4 starts in Philly and Syndergaard has also been prone to giving up big hits this season as well. That is why he has a 4.74 ERA so far this season. Aaron Nola's numbers look a little rough this season too but that was mostly due to one bad start at Washington. In his two home starts he has a 3.65 ERA and has held opponents to a .214 BAA. Nola struggled with the Mets in his rookie season but of course he has been a different pitcher since then. The past 3 seasons he dominated New York to the tune of a 6-0 record, 2.54 ERA, and holding them to a .200 batting average in those 8 starts. The Los Angeles Dodgers are off to a disappointing start to the season but snapped a six-game slide with a 7-1 win over Milwaukee on Sunday.
Here the Dodgers will hand the ball to left-hander Clayton Kershaw (2018: 9-5, 2.73 ERA) for his season debut. It will no doubt give them a morale boost to have the three-time National League Cy Young Award winner back in action after missing the beginning of the season due to injury, but is he 100% fit? I like the price we get on the Reds to at the very least cover the runline here Monday night.
Cincinnati has recovered from a a slow start and had won four on the bounce before closing out last week with a 9-5 loss to the Cards. "Guys have responded," Reds manager David Bell said. "They've stayed ready on certain days that they're not playing, and they're playing well."
Tonight the Reds will send Luis Castillo (1-1, 0.92 ERA) to the mound. The right-hander has been excellent in his first three starts of the season and tossed seven shutout innings of a 14-0 win against the Miami Marlins last time out. Castillo is 2-0 in his career against the Dodgers with only four runs (three earned) allowed while fanning 17 through 12 1/3 innings of work.
The Reds are 6-1 in the last seven meetings and they've won four straight at Dodger Stadium.
