LIST PITCHERS: Musgrove and Quantrill
(911) Pittsburgh Pirates at (912) San Diego Padres
Musgrove put down an Arizona offense that was in good form earlier this week by allowing one single and issuing two walks while registering five strikeouts over seven scoreless innings. The put an end to a run of poor command and even worse batted ball luck.
Rookie right-hander Cal Quantrill was recalled from Triple-A El Paso this morning and is the Padres first inning arm on the PetCo mound today.
The prospect is cool and collected but not yet ready to be commanding big boy bats every fifth day. The overall eighth overall pick of the 2016 draft comes off a turn in which he surrendered two runs, for the second straight start, resulting in losses. His last against the Braves in Atlanta.
On the farm Quantrill is 4-1 in six starts with the Chihuahuas --- but he has allowed far too much hard contact and the results are evident of such with a 4-plus ERA and FIP.
Musgrove has a history. And that history is a glass more than half full. The right-hander, the key piece in the Cole trade last season, found his heavy fast ball once again. The D'Backs squared up Musgrove for a mere 85.9 MPH exit velocity vs Musgrove.
After an April showcase of the free agent signing of Manny Macho-man the Padres have returned to whom they are. A team that will win some, lose some, and do both by the success and failure of their young pitching staff.
Today Musgrove takes on a Padres offense that ranks at or near the bottom of the Senior Circuit offensive categories of batting average with runners in scoring position and overall on base percentage... both being well below the league average.

DB's THOUGHTS:
Wishing I had taken Portland on the first-half line last night instead of full-game (would've been an easy winner). Not making that mistake again tonight. Toronto, just like Portland last night, is back home for Game 3 after losing the first two on the road. This is a critical game for the Raptors, as they do not want to dig themselves an 0-3 hole.
I can definitely see this game playing out similarly to last night's. I expect Toronto to come out strong on its home floor and lead this game at the half. Whether they can hang on for the actual win is another story. I think they can, but I thought that about Portland last night and it cost us. I'm much more confident in Toronto leading at the half than I am about them winning the game.
The Raptors only lost three games in a row once during the regular season. They lost two straight to the 76ers in the last round, and responded with a 5-point road win & a 36-point home win after that.
In the history of the SDQL database, conference finals home favorites in Game 3 after losing the first two games on the road won the first half by a margin of 3 points or more in 16 of 21 games (76%). That's good enough for me.

MILWAUKEE @ ATLANTA | 5/19 | 1:20 PM EDT
Braves pitcher Mike Foltynewicz has allowed four or more earned runs in four of his last six starts, while Milwaukee's Brandon Woodruff has put together four straight solid starts. Back the road favorite.

It's a steep price but worth it considering Hyun-Jin Ru is on the mound for the Dodgers. He has 40 strikeouts and two walks over his last five starts. Over his last three, he's yielded one earned run total. Lay it with L.A.

OVER 10 COLORADO @ PHILADELPHIA | 5/19 | 1:05 PM EDT
9:37 AM
Kyle Freeland is having a tough time this season allowing 12 homers in nine starts with the Rockies winning just four of his games. However, he comes off two straight Rockies wins behind him and Jared Eickhoff comes off a start allowing five runs. All five of Eickhoff's have stayed Under but this one goes Over. The wind is blowing out at 13 mph. Over is the play.
UNDER 8 PITTSBURGH @ SAN DIEGO | 5/19 | 4:10 PM EDT
12:15 PM
Both of these teams rank at the bottom of the league in all of the hitting categories but more specifically hits, runs, and walks. Helping our cause is that Pirates pitcher Joe Musgrove pitched a gem against this Padres lineup last year throwing a shutout in seven innings. Also due to the fact both teams have combined for the Over in nine of 13 games, regression will hit soon. The Under is the sharp play here.

Despite the fact that the Astros have won 10 straight games, we are tailing the Red Sox at a fortunate time. They are up against Astros SP Wade Miley, who got shelled in his last outing against Boston giving up 6 runs as a +220 underdog. Here we have the Red Sox with their ace as only a moderate favorite. Chris Sale is coming off a dominant 17 strikeout performance and has given up just three runs in his last 21 innings. Red Sox are the play today.

4-Unit Play. Take #921 Oakland (-1.5, -125) over Detroit (1 p.m., Sunday, May 19)
Mike Fiers has been outstanding in his last few starts. He threw a no-hitter two starts ago. He has only allowed two hits in his last 14 innings and he has a 2.07 ERA in his last four starts. Detroit has lost six games in a row and they don't look good at all. I think that Oakland will get the four-game sweep. The A's have gone 5-3 in their last eight gams and they have gone 14-3 in their last 17 games in Detroit. The Tigers are going with rookie Greg Soto. He has been terrible in both starts and has a 13.50 ERA. The Tigers have lost both of his starts by at least four runs. Take the A's here.
