CFL Betting Notes - Week 7
      David Schwab

      Week 6 Betting Recap

The home teams swept Week 6 in the CFL straight-up while going 3-1 against the spread. The run started Thursday night with Calgary’s 26-16 victory at home against Toronto, but the Stampeders could not cover as heavy 13 ½-point favorites. On Friday night, Winnipeg stayed perfect of the year both SU and ATS with a 31-1 rout over Ottawa as 11 ½-point home favorites.

Saturday’s action started with Montreal pulling off its third-straight upset with a 20-10 victory against Edmonton closing as six-point underdogs at home. Later that night, Saskatchewan raced past British Columbia 38-25 as a six-point favorite in the first meeting in that home-and-home series.

      Thursday, July 25

Calgary Stampeders (3-2 SU, 1-4 ATS) at Ottawa RedBlacks (2-3 SU, 1-4 ATS)
      Point-spread: Calgary -5
      Total: 51 ½

      Game Overview

Calgary remains two games back in the West Division standings as the defending champ. The total stayed UNDER 52 points in last week’s win against Toronto and it has remained UNDER in the Stampeders’ last three games.

Nick Arbuckle continues to get the start at quarterback and he has thrown for 914 yards and five touchdowns in four games. He had two touchdown passes against Toronto, but he was also picked off twice. Juwan Brescacin caught five passes for 64 yards and both of those touchdowns.

Ottawa’ losing streak reached three games with Friday’s setback. It has failed to cover the closing spread in its last four games. The RedBlacks went with Jonathon Jennings at quarterback for the injured Dominique Davis and he struggled with just 45 yards passing while going 6-for-15.

Will Arndt could not do much better with four completions on 13 attempts for 57 yards. The lone bright spot in one of Ottawa’s most dismal showings in franchise history was John Crockett’s 88 yards rushing on 15 carries.

He completed 32-of-42 passes against Calgary for 343 yards and two touchdowns, but he also threw four interceptions. He has thrown for 1,159 yards and seven scores in five games, but he leads the CFL with eight INT’s.

                    Race 7 - Claiming - 8.3f on the Dirt. Purse: $9100 Class Rating: 78

                    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                    # 5 SURE SHE'S GRAND 4/1
                    # 7 BUCH OF DAISIES 5/1
                    # 3 SPEARETTE 2/1
SURE SHE'S GRAND is my choice. Has to be given a shot - I like the numbers from the last competition. Is worth thinking about and may be a bet - strong speed figs (64 average) at today's distance and surface lately. Players should probably take a good look at this one as this filly has one of the best win percentages at this distance in this field. BUCH OF DAISIES - She must be given consideration given the competitive speed figs. With better than average trips to the winner's circle, Colon will almost certainly have this mare in excellent position to win the contest. SPEARETTE - With a nice Equibase class rating average of 76, has one of the best class advantages in this group. She has recorded formidable numbers under today's conditions and will probably fare well against this group of horses in this race.

                      Arlington - Race #5 - Post: 3:36pm - Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $17,000 Class Rating: 89

                      Rating:

                      #6 INDUSTRIALIST (ML=8/1)
                      #5 FIST OF RAGE (ML=7/2)
                      #3 HERO TIGER (ML=9/2)

INDUSTRIALIST - You always have to be on the prowl for bankroll building rider/handler tandems; we have an instance right here. You have to like this fine animal changing from dirt to turf for the first time. He finished on the board on a sluggish dirt track on April 7th. A sign he may take to turf. Lets try to beat the probable favorites with this horse. Just missed last out, but ran a decent race. This trainer brings horses to the turf conditioned properly and ready to go, winning over 20 pct of the time under similar conditions. FIST OF RAGE - If the speed horses get weary, this gelding will kick into high gear. This gelding is probably the best closer in the field. This first time turf runner is going to give these horses a run for their money. He came in first in his try on a sluggish track on May 31st. Should like the turf. HERO TIGER - Running on the turf today, you should review a horse's class. This one has the top number in the bunch. Taking this jockey/conditioner combination is a smart move. A repeat of that last effort on July 13th where he earned a rating of 87 looks high enough to win in this event.

Vulnerable Contenders: #10 JIMMY AT LAST (ML=5/1), #1 POWER CRY (ML=6/1), #7 ECHOES OF LAUGHTER (ML=6/1),

JIMMY AT LAST - The speed figure last time around the track doesn't fit very well in this affair when I look at the class figure of today's race. Mark this horse as a possibly overvalued equine. POWER CRY - The finish position of sixth in the last affair shows me that this equine may be going out of form. This gelding hasn't had any recent good fortune in short distance contests. I find it hard to bet on him in this race. ECHOES OF LAUGHTER - This thoroughbred hasn't had nary a single morning drill after running so well on July 5th.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - HERO TIGER - This colt improved his speed rating two races back on July 6th and improved again in the last race.

                        # 7 SEA TREATY 99/1
POWERFUL THIRST is my choice. Have to play this gelding with the strong earnings per start in dirt route contests. Has been travelling soundly and has among the top speed in the race for today's distance. Reason to like this gelding as he has in the irons one of the best jocks using winning percentages over the last 30 days. KIT CHECK - Has some encouraging handicapping angles which make this one a play. Seems to have a respectable class edge based on the most recent company kept. SEA TREATY - Horses who have been prepared to race at this distance and surface by Broberg have shown very solid results lately. Broberg has him trained admirably to break swiftly out of the gate.

                          Penn National - Race #8 - Post: 9:20pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $11,800 Class Rating: 50

                          Rating:

                          #8 FLOATING RATE (ML=4/1)
                          #4 REGAL TREASURE (ML=9/2)

FLOATING RATE - You'll be making money right and left by turning your cash onto this jockey/trainer combination. This filly is back in a race very quick. This is a great angle - Sprinters that come back in less than 10 days after a race. A good sign of a sharp and ready racehorse. Has a decent chance to break maiden moving to the main track in this event. REGAL TREASURE - I like horses that return to a similar class level after dropping at least five class points like this one did in the last race. I believe she'll be competitive at this class. This mare almost broke her maiden since she finished first last time out, but was disqualified.

                          Vulnerable Contenders: #6 LEMON DROP DREAMER (ML=7/2), #1 TAPITSTRY R V F (ML=6/1), #1A TIZ PROMISING RVF (ML=6/1),

LEMON DROP DREAMER - This filly hasn't had any strong victories in short distance races in the last two months. Just cannot bet on this steed. Didn't show me anything last out or on June 16th. Finished ninth in her most recent performance with a quite unimpressive speed figure. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to win after that in this field. TAPITSTRY R V F - Doesn't appear to be worth 6/1 this time out. Pass on her this time. TIZ PROMISING RVF - This questionable contender hasn't been near the winner at the finish lately.

Thursday's comp play will be the Yankees in the first of four big division battles in Boston tonight as they take on the Red Sox.

This is the first time this season the teams will be meeting at Fenway Park, and the fact that the host Sox are below .500 at 24-25 in their home park sure does not bode well for a play on the home team tonight.

The Yankees shook off their 2 game losing skid by winning the final pair of game in their just finished 3 game set at Minnesota, and they did so by scoring a whopping 24 runs!

New York is on a 7-2 run their last 9 games, and in games against Boston this season the Yankees have won 6 of 7.

Masahiro Tanaka and Rick Porcello get the call tonight for the opener, and Tanaka is 4-0 in his last 7 starts, and is also 8-4 for his career against the Red Sox.

Porcello is on a 3 game winning streak, and stands at 10-9 for his career versus the Yankees.

Boston needs a sweep this weekend. If not a sweep, at least a winning series, but New York continues to look like the team to beat in the A.L., so I will lay the small road chalk with the Yankees on Friday.
