Know this about the White Sox and Ivan Nova. Both are bad. However. The White Sox have a winning record against lefthanded starting pitching. Philadelphia is starting southpaw Jason Vargas, who isn't about to be confused with Sandy Koufax. Nova actually was decent in July going 3-2 with a 3.16 ERA. Nova has been excellent during his past two starts giving up two earned runs in 15 innings against the Marlins and Twins, who lead the majors in homers and are third in runs scored. Nova beat Minnesota, 5-1, this past Saturday. Nova is familar with the Phillies having pitched for the Pirates from 2016 through last season. Nova owns a 2-1 mark with a 2.53 ERA in five appearances versus Philadelphia. So, at this plus price, the White Sox with Nova are worth a shot. Vargas is 36 and pitching for his sixth different big league team. His fastball is rumored to be able to break glass. But that's just a rumor. He's a bottom-of-the-rotation starter. The White Sox can attack Vargas with several respectable righthanded power hitters - Jose Abreu, Tim Anderson and James McCann - all of whom have hit at least 11 homers. Citizens Bank Park is an excellent hitter's park and the wind is blowing out to left at 8-10 mph.

The Philadelphia Phillies are in a dog fight with a handful of teams for the two Wild Cards in the American League. They flexed their muscles with a 10-2 romp of San Francisco Thursday night, and I think we'll see any easy win for the home team here at Citizens Bank Park Friday night.
Ivan Nova (6-9, 5.23 ERA) will toe the slab for the visiting Chicago White Sox. The 32-year-old righty is coming off back-to-back quality starts against Miami and Minnesota, but both at home. Nova has been tagged with 10 runs on 16 hits over 10 2/3 innings of work in his last two starts away from home, and he owns a 5.12 ERA in 12 road starts on the season. Phillies' right fielder Bryce Harper is 6-for-13 with two home runs in his career off Nova.
The Phillies hand the ball to veteran left-hander Jason Vargas (6-5, 4.01 ERA) for his team debut after joining from the Mets. Vargas won each of his last three starts with the Mets while holding his opponents to six runs over 17 2/3 innings of work.

Braves should have no problem cashing in another win over the Reds on Friday. Atlanta won the series opener 4-1 on Thursday. That's 3 in a row for the NL East leaders, who have been a money-making machine when priced like they are today.
Braves are 33-10 as a favorite in 2019 when priced at -100 to -150. They have also owned NL Central teams with a 12-2 mark and are 11-4 in their last 15 at home vs a team with a losing record. Reds on the flip side of this are just 18-37 in their last 55 road games vs a team with a winning home record.
Alex Wood might be a good addition for the Reds, but this is only his second start of 2019 and he wasn't able to complete 5 innings in his first start. He only gave up 2 runs, but allowed 7 hits and a walk for a 1.713 WHIP.
It's going to take a few outings for Wood to regain his form. Hard to see him slowing down this Braves offense, which is averaging 7.3 runs/game and hitting .292 with a .356 OBP in their last 7 games. Take Atlanta!
