Houston Astros vs. New York Yankees Preview and Predictions 10-17-2019

The New York Yankees look to get their lethal offense in gear again when they host the Houston Astros on Thursday night for a critical Game 4 of the American League Championship Series after Wednesday's scheduled contest was postponed by rain. The Yankees led the majors in runs scored during the regular season, but managed three over the last 20 innings while leaving 16 runners on base and suddenly find themselves down two games to one.

Gleyber Torres provided New York's only run in a 4-1 setback Tuesday as he launched a solo homer for his third blast of the postseason and 10th RBI, but the Yankees could use more from Gary Sanchez (1-for-13, six strikeouts in the series), who told reporters through an interpreter: "I'm fighting to get back on track." The rainout gives New York a chance to turn back to ace Masahiro Tanaka, who held Houston to one hit over six scoreless innings during Game 1, and fellow right-hander Zack Greinke is slated to return to the mound for the Astros after giving up three runs over six frames in the 7-0 loss against the Yankees on Saturday. "Whatever happens, happens, and we've just got to roll with the punches and keep battling," Houston third baseman Alex Bregman told mlb.com. "Keep fighting and keep playing our brand of baseball." Former MVP Jose Altuve had one of two home runs for the Astros in Tuesday's win and has hit safely in all eight postseason games, going 12-for-32 with four longballs, two doubles, two walks, six runs scored and six RBIs.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Zack Greinke (0-2, 8.38 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Masahiro Tanaka (2-0, 0.82)

Greinke has served up five homers in two postseason starts after Torres and Giancarlo Stanton went deep against him in the Game 1 loss, among seven hits allowed. The 35-year-old, who went 8-1 with 3.02 ERA in 10 starts with Houston during the regular season after being acquired at the trade deadline, is 3-6 in 13 postseason starts - 0-3 since 2015. DJ LeMahieu, who was 1-for-3 against Greinke in Game 1, has a homer and eight RBIs in 58 regular season at-bats versus the Florida native.

Tanaka has been outstanding in the postseason while allowing one run across five innings with seven strikeouts against Minnesota in the ALDS before striking out four versus Houston. The 30-year-old native of Japan was inconsistent during the regular season (11-9, 4.45 ERA), but permitted only three runs over 12 innings against the Astros. Altuve and Carlos Correa have each homered twice in their careers against Tanaka, who is 5-2 with a 1.32 ERA in seven playoff games - 2-2, 1.50 versus the Astros.

WALK-OFFS

1. Houston LF Michael Brantley is 6-for-16 in the last four games after going 2-for-16 in the first four of the playoffs.

2. Stanton, who was 2-for-4 in Game 1, missed the last two contests with a right quad strain and is day-to-day.

3. Astros RHP Roberto Osuna earned his first save of the postseason Wednesday and has retired all eight batters he faced in the series.

Kansas City Chiefs vs. Denver Broncos Preview and Predictions 10-17-2019

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been the talk of the NFL since he assumed the starting role to begin the 2018 season, but the reigning NFL MVP's performance over the last two games has altered the recent conversation. Mahomes and the Chiefs look to regain their footing on Thursday when they visit the Denver Broncos, who have lost seven straight in the series.

Mahomes has completed just 55.4 percent of his passes over the last two games, including season lows in completions (19) and passing yards (273) in Kansas City's 31-24 setback against Houston. "It's a long season. You can figure it out," the 24-year-old Mahomes said. " ... There (are) difficult times in the NFL. Teams are good, and we've played some great opponents so far this season, and we'll have to find a way to get this thing rolling again on a short week against a great opponent." Denver has answered an 0-4 start by ratcheting up its defensive play, highlighted by recording its first seven-sack, three-interception performance in over 25 years in Sunday's 16-0 shutout of Tennessee. "It's a lot of fun when you dominate, especially when you start the way we did," cornerback/safety Kareem Jackson said.

ABOUT THE CHIEFS (4-2): Jackson and company will have to contend with the ultra-quick Tyreek Hill, who made a spectacular return from a five-game absence due to sternum and right collarbone injuries with his NFL-best sixth multi-touchdown performance since 2017. Tight end Travis Kelce has torched the Broncos for 762 career receiving yards -- his most versus any opponent -- and aims for his fifth straight game in the series with a touchdown catch. Kansas City hasn't done itself any favors by abandoning its 24th-ranked running game (82.7 yards per game), with LeSean McCoy recording eight of the team's 11 carries last week for 44 yards. "I mean, obviously, we have to be better," Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy said. "There are a number of things that go into it, but everyone has to be on the same page."

ABOUT THE BRONCOS (2-4): Denver coach Vic Fangio dismissed the notion that Indianapolis showed the blueprint on how to defeat Kansas City. "Every game has its own personality to it," Fangio said. "The Colts played well on that day in all three phases of the game and got some critical takeaways that stopped some drives." The Broncos likely will attempt to exploit the Chiefs' 30th-ranked rush defense (161.8 yards per game) with their 1-2 punch of Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman, who are the lone running back teammates with at least 400 scrimmage yards this season. Lindsay rushed for 70 yards and the game's only touchdown against the Titans while Freeman added a team-high five receptions to go along with his 76 scrimmage yards.

UCLA Bruins vs. Stanford Cardinal Preview and Predictions 10-17-2019

Things are not going according to plan for UCLA and coach Chip Kelly, whose team is off to its second consecutive 1-5 start and faces another uphill battle Thursday against host Stanford. The Bruins have lost their last 11 meetings versus the Cardinal, who have won back-to-back contests following a three-game losing streak.

UCLA lost for the 14th time in Kelly's 18 games as coach when Oregon State jumped to a 21-0 lead over the stunned Bruins and posted a 48-31 victory at the Rose Bowl on Oct. 5. "There's not a magic formula," Kelly told reporters. "There is no trade or a waiver wire. You don't get to add players at this point in time. We've got to put them in positions to make plays and give them an opportunity to execute. That is on us as a coaching staff." UCLA can expect a heavy dose of Stanford running back Cameron Scarlett, who leads the Pac-12 with 564 rushing yards and has 13 receptions for 138 yards. Stanford put together its most complete effort of the season before heading into last week's bye, dominating the time of possession in a 23-13 win over Washington.

ABOUT UCLA (1-5, 1-2 Pac-12): Sophomore Austin Burton was 27-of-41 for 236 yards and a touchdown in the victory against Oregon State and could make his second career start in place of Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who has been out with a leg injury. Running back Demetric Felton had 166 scrimmage yards against the Beavers, but the Bruins' defense allowed Oregon State quarterback Jake Luton to throw for a career-high five touchdowns passes and run for another. UCLA ranks near the bottom of the country in passing yards allowed (340.7 per game), total defense (503.3 yards allowed per game) and points allowed per game (37.7).

ABOUT STANFORD (3-3, 2-2): The Cardinal are set to start three true freshmen on its offensive line in front of sophomore Jack West, who is expected to make his first career start with Davis Mills and K.J. Costello sidelined because of injuries. Scarlett rushed a career-high 33 times for 151 yards and a touchdown in the win over Washington and has 702 all-purpose yards to lead the Cardinal, which is averaging nearly 35 minutes in time of possession, fourth-best in the country. The defense is led by cornerback Paulson Adebo, who ranks in the top 10 nationally in passes defended, pass breakups and passes defended per game.
