CFL Week 19 preview, odds, picks & predictions: Don't count out Winnipeg on the road
        Rohit Ponnaiya

Andrew Harris and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are 7-point underdogs on the road against the Calgary Stampeders on Saturday night.

It's Week 19 in the CFL and there are just three weeks left in the regular season. We break down the odds (provided by 10bet.com) for all the games on this weekend's schedule, highlighted by a Saturday night clash between a pair of 10-win teams in the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Calgary Stampeders.

We've got all the betting notes, analysis and predictions you need before wagering on the CFL.

        Season Betting Trends

        Favorites: 51-18 SU, 31-36-2 ATS
Home teams: 43-26 SU, 35-32-2 ATS
        Over/Under: 32-36-1

        Week 18 Picks: 3-1
        Season to date: 29-30-2

TORONTO ARGONAUTS AT MONTREAL ALOUETTES (-10.5, 53)

The Alouettes might be headed to the playoffs but they've often had to play catch up in games. We faded them in the first half last week and made some money with Montreal continuing their season-long trend of playing awful in the opening half.

Over their last nine games Montreal is 5-4 SU but has trailed at halftime in eight of those contests. They have a first-half scoring margin of minus-6.2 ppg in that span.

These teams tangled back on August 25 and Toronto had a 16-6 lead going into halftime before Montreal came from behind to win. Take Toronto to keep things relatively close early and back them on the 1H spread.

        PICK: First Half Toronto +6.5

SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS AT BC LIONS (+7, 47)

Oof, the BC Lions must know exactly how Charlie Brown felt when Lucy pulled the football away at the last second. Just when it looked like things were finally starting to go the Lions' way, they lose star quarterback Mike Reilly for the rest of the season with a broken wrist. Reilly and WR Bryan Burnham were really the only bright spots for BC and Burnham will be hard-pressed to continue his success with backup Danny O'Brien throwing the ball.

The Riders are 9-2 SU and 8-3 ATS over their last 11 games and have held opponents to just 19.9 ppg over that span. Back Saskatchewan to win and cover against a deflated Lions squad.

        PICK: Saskatchewan -7

Houston Astros vs. New York Yankees Preview and Predictions 10-18-2019

The Houston Astros attempt to reach the World Series for the second time in three seasons when they visit the New York Yankees on Friday for Game 5 of the American League Championship Series. After losing the opener, Houston has strung together three straight wins, including Thursday's dominant 8-3 victory, for a commanding 3-1 series lead.

George Springer and Carlos Correa each belted a three-run homer in the Game 4 victory, but no one on the Astros is ready to proclaim the series is over. "We just have to go play our game," Springer, who holds the franchise record of 13 career postseason blasts, said during a postgame television interview. "We're going to hand the ball to JV (Justin Verlander) and we'll see what happens." New York recorded nearly as many errors (four) as hits (five) and went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position in a sloppy performance on Thursday. "We played poorly, there is no other way to explain it," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said in his postgame press conference. "We need to flush this immediately. We talked about this as a team, we need to get over this in a hurry and put our best foot forward (in Game 5). Stranger things have certainly happened, a lot stranger. We need to play a cleaner game if we are going to beat a team like that."

                      TV: 7:08 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Justin Verlander (1-1, 3.12 ERA) vs. Yankees LH James Paxton (0-0, 5.14)

Verlander settled for a no-decision in Game 2 after allowing two runs and five hits over 6 2/3 innings. The 36-year-old went 1-0 with a 4.15 ERA in two regular-season starts against the Yankees and indicated he has a lot of respect for the team's lineup. "I think 1 through 9 can hurt you with a homer. If you make mistakes, they punish you," Verlander said in his press conference. "It's just kind of one of those lineups that you have to go out there and understand that it's going to be a grind. You're going to find yourself in moments where you need to make pitches."

Paxton was pulled after just 2 1/3 innings when matched against Verlander in Game 2 despite allowing just one run and four hits. The 30-year-old, who went 1-1 with a 6.00 ERA in two regular-season outings against Houston, is pitching in the postseason for the first time in his career. "There's a higher intensity, but overall, it's the same game," Paxton said during his press conference. "You have to treat it the same way. It's just being able to mentally treat it the same way, even though there is that extra intensity,"

                      WALK-OFFS

                      1. Retiring Yankees LHP CC Sabathia (shoulder) departed Game 4 in the eighth inning and is done for the postseason as Boone termed the injury "not good."

                      2. Astros 2B Jose Altuve (12) and Correa (10) also are in double digits when it comes to postseason homers.

                      3. New York OF Giancarlo Stanton (quadriceps) has missed the last three games but could serve as DH in Game 5.

                      PREDICTION: Yankees 5, Astros 4

Pittsburgh Panthers vs. Syracuse Orange Preview and Predictions 10-18-2019

Despite another tough loss, Syracuse coach Dino Babers is sticking by his embattled quarterback Tommy DeVito. With the optimism of the first 10-win season since 2001 all but disappeared in the rear-view mirror, the Orange will host a Pittsburgh team Saturday that has won three straight since a seven-point loss to No. 7 Penn State on Sept. 14.

While DeVito is completing 65.5 percent of his passes for 1,534 yards and 12 touchdowns against five interceptions, he still pales in the eyes of Eric Dungey (3,622 total yards, 33 total touchdowns in 2019), the school's all-time passing leader with 9,340 yards and a holder of 25 school records. "(DeVito) is part coach," Babers said after the 16-10 loss to North Carolina State on Oct. 10 in which DeVito was sacked eight times behind a line with three first-year starters. "And the one thing about being the starting quarterback is everybody gets to second-guess you. Now, everybody doesn't matter, but some people do. ... I think we've got a fabulous quarterback. I think he's going to be really good. He's growing and he's getting better and better and better." Pittsburgh, which is coming off a bye week, got a 26-yard touchdown pass from Kenny Pickett to V'Lique Carter with 38 seconds remaining as the Panthers rallied in the fourth quarter for the third consecutive game (Central Florida, Delaware) to beat Duke 33-30 on Oct. 5. The Panthers beat the Orange 44-37 last season when Alex Kessman kicked a 45-yard field goal with eight seconds remaining to tie the game and Darrin Hall scored on a three-yard touchdown run in the first overtime.

ABOUT PITTSBURGH (4-2, 1-1 ACC): Pickett, in his second season as a full-time starter after surviving his own bout with critics, finished 29-of-48 for 268 yards with three touchdowns against the Blue Devils, his fourth consecutive 220-yard performance after the junior threw for 200 yards once last season. Todd Sibley Jr. followed his 106-yard effort against Delaware in his first career start with 60 yards on 12 carries, The defense held the Blue Devils to 288 yards and forced six turnovers for the first time since 2011, including the first two interceptions of sophomore Paris Ford's career with one returned for a 26-yard touchdown.

ABOUT SYRACUSE (3-3, 0-2): DeVito completed 29-of-39 passes for 300 yards and a TD, but the Orange couldn't overcome 12 penalties and a 16-0 deficit despite getting inside the Wolfpack 40 on the final drive before two penalties and a sack sealed the defeat. Trishton Jackson had a career-high nine receptions for 106 yards, including a two-yard touchdown catch, and the junior ranks fifth in the ACC in receptions per game (5.5) and receiving yards per game (83.2) and is tied for third in receiving TDs (six). Senior linebacker Andrew Armstrong recorded a career-high 14 tackles against N.C. State and intercepted a tipped ball to extend the Orange's streak of consecutive games with a turnover to 20 - the second-longest active streak behind Mississippi State's 22 games.

                        EXTRA POINTS

                        1. Pitt has won 14 of the last 17 meetings since 2002 and six of the last nine on the road, but home teams are 11-5 in the last 16 with wins in the last three contests. The favorite had won 15 straight in the series until Pitt's win last season.

Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Northwestern Wildcats Preview and Predictions 10-18-2019

Fourth-ranked Ohio State swings back into action after a bye week with a rare Friday night game at Northwestern. The Buckeyes rolled through the first half of their schedule without showing many flaws, but the back half could be a bit more challenging.

After Ohio State travels to Northwestern, it returns home to take on No. 6 Wisconsin in what's shaping up as a major matchup with Big Ten and College Football Playoff implications. But first the Buckeyes have to take care of business in Evanston, where they have a 62-14-1 all-time record. Ryan Day (9-0) has yet to lose a game as head coach and it would be a major upset if Ohio State's 12-game overall win streak ended against Northwestern, which is also coming off a bye. After winning the Big Ten West Division last year before losing to Ohio State in the conference championship game, the Wildcats find themselves at the bottom of the standings this season and in serious danger of falling to 0-4 in the league unless they can pull off a huge upset.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1. LINE: Ohio State -28

ABOUT OHIO STATE (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten): It's hard to find fault with the Buckeyes offensively or defensively, and the numbers confirm that, with Ohio State ranked in the top 10 nationally in total offense, total defense, scoring offense, scoring defense, rushing offense, rushing defense, pass efficiency, pass efficiency defense and turnover margin. The offense is led by quarterback Justin Fields, who's third nationally in points responsible with 26.0 per game and sixth in pass efficiency, and junior running back J.K. Dobbins, whose 137.7 yards per game rank second in FBS. On defense, Chase Young checks in tied for second in the country in sacks per game with 1.42.

ABOUT NORTHWESTERN (1-4, 0-3 Big Ten): The Wildcats' only win came at home against UNLV on Sept. 14 and they have dropped Big Ten games against Michigan State (31-10), Wisconsin (24-15) and Nebraska (13-10) since. A defense led by its linebackers has played better than the sputtering offense, which is averaging 14.4 points per game and ranks last in the Big Ten in passing yards per game (140.4). Backup quarterback Aidan Smith started last week against Nebraska instead of highly regarded transfer Hunter Johnson, who hasn't lived up to expectations, and both could play against Ohio State.

                          EXTRA POINTS

                          1. Dobbins has rushed for one more yard than Heisman Trophy contender Jonathan Taylor of Wisconsin through six games (826-825) on 13 fewer carries (129-116), but Taylor has scored 18 touchdowns compared with Dobbins' seven.

                          2. Ohio State CB Jeff Okudah leads the Big Ten with three interceptions and is tied for third in passes defensed behind Nebraska's Lamar Jackson and Northwestern's Greg Newsome.

                          3. Northwestern's most effective offense weapon is RB Drake Anderson (74 carries, 366 yards, three touchdowns).

PREDICTION: Ohio State 42, Northwestern 7

                                OIL SLICK

The Detroit Red Wings might want to employ three defensemen at once Friday night as they face the unenviable task of stopping the Edmonton Oilers. Connor McDavid and Co. are ripping through the NHL right now with six wins in their opening seven games, and are considerable favorites against a Red Wings team that faced the Calgary Flames a night earlier.

Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl have combined for 32 points through the first seven games, and should threaten another multi-point showing against Detroit; we like the Over here, as well as literally any point prop involving these two.

                                BIG, BAD BRUINS

The Toronto Maple Leafs have no doubt had their fill of the Boston Bruins – but alas, they have to face them at least four times this season, starting with Saturday's encounter at Air Canada Centre. There are two trends working in the Bruins' favor heading into this one, with the road team having won three of the past four meetings and Boston owning a 3-1 SU record over that stretch.

Combine these trends with the Maple Leafs having lost one of their top offensive players (more on that later), and it's a fine recipe for a Boston SU victory; alternatively, you can opt for the Bruins on the +1.5 puckline if you want something safer.

                                KINGS OF THE ROAD

Home ice hasn't been much of an advantage at all for the Calgary Flames or Los Angeles Kings in their recent head-to-head series, which bodes well for the Flames heading into Saturday's tilt at Staples Center. The road team is a sizzling 8-3 SU in the last 11 encounters between the Pacific Division Rivals, and has outscored the home side by an absurd 14-5 margin in the past three games.

It's also notable that the Kings' 17 home victories last season were the second-fewest of any Western Conference team, while the Flames led the West and ranked second in the NHL with 24 road wins.

                                WHAT TIME IS IT?

You could hardly blame the Vancouver Canucks for wanting a little Frosted Flakes as their pre-game meal for Sunday's meeting with the host New York Rangers. This game carries a 1 p.m. ET start time, which translates to 10 a.m. local time for the West Coast-based Canucks.

While there isn't a long history of super-early starts for Vancouver, the Canucks did play two games last season that began this early; they lost them both, while getting outscored 8-3 in the process. Not only do we favor the Rangers to win this one outright, we see the Canucks coming in Under their team goal total.

GOALIE PROFILE: DEVAN DUBNYK, MINNESOTA WILD

It feels like a lifetime ago that Dubnyk was a finalist for the Hart and Vezina Trophies. The veteran netminder is off to a dreadful start to the 2019-20 campaign heading into the weekend, and could see himself losing playing time to backup Alex Stalock as a result.

Not only has Dubnyk lost all five of his starts to open the season, he has has surrendered four or more goals in four of them while getting pulled from a 7-4 loss to Pittsburgh on Oct. 12 after getting torched for five goals on just 23 shots. If you see Dubnyk starting for Minnesota, lean toward the opposing team – at least, until Dubnyk gets things sorted out.

INJURY UPDATE, JOHN TAVARES, TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS

The Maple Leafs' offensive attack has taken a significant hit after Tavares suffered a broken finger in Wednesday's 4-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild. Tavares, who scored a goal in the win, is expected to miss the next two weeks, putting even more pressure on No. 1 center Auston Matthews to keep the offense humming.

Tavares has three goals and four assists through the first eight games of the season after scoring 40 goals in his first year with the hometown Maple Leafs. Look for Matthews to see an uptick in playing time as a result, making him an even better goals prop option.

                                HAT TRICK TRENDS

                                • Games that have gone to extra time have been largely low-scoring affairs over the previous seven days. Overtime and shootout results have gone below the total eight of nine times this past week, with 24 total Unders compared to 23 Overs in the same span. The Over play is still a slightly better option for the season at 52.2 percent.

                                • Hot starts from the Oilers, Carolina Hurricanes and Buffalo Sabres have moved all three teams significantly higher in the Stanley Cup futures odds. The Oilers have jumped to +2200 to win the championship, up from +3300 to open the season. Carolina has vaulted from +3300 to +2000, while the Sabres have seen the biggest move, from +6600 all the way to +3300.

                                • When some teams rise up the odds, others have to fall – and the Dallas Stars have taken one of the biggest tumbles of any team in the league. The Stars opened the season at +1600 to win the Stanley Cup, the seventh-best odds in the league. But a 1-6-1 start to the campaign has dropped Dallas all the way down to +2800, behind 16 other clubs.
