    Mike Tierney

    TOP DOG

A veteran sportswriter whose work appears periodically in the New York Times and Los Angeles Times, Mike Tierney has covered the NFL for decades and reported from seven Super Bowls. Mike does not consider himself a pet lover. But he likes 'dogs, preferring to evaluate each game from the underdog's point of view. Mike used that philosophy to post a sparkling 63-46 ATS mark for the entire 2018 NFL season. Over the past three seasons, Mike is 197-162 in the NFL, returning over $1,800 to $100 players.

    KANSAS CITY +3
    KANSAS CITY @ NEW ENGLAND | 12/08 | 4:25 PM EST
    1:05 PM
The gap between the offenses is so vast that Kansas City looms as a straight-up winner. The Chiefs own the second-best yards-per-snap average, a stark contrast to New England’s No. 23 placement. Patriots QB Tom Brady’s frustration with his undermanned unit is evident. With a recent 10-4 ATS road record, the Chiefs will not be intimidated by the rabid crowd. The deadly duo of QB Pat Mahomes and WR Tyreek Hill finally is together after both missed chunks of the schedule.

    NEW ORLEANS -3
    SAN FRANCISCO @ NEW ORLEANS | 12/08 | 1:00 PM EST
    1:01 PM
Under normal circumstances, San Francisco might be the play. But the 49ers are reeling from a crushing defeat three time zones away, have flown to Tampa for a week’s practice and then head to New Orleans. An odd agenda, for sure. The Saints will be rested after last playing on Thanksgiving. They are more balanced than the 49ers and are tied for eighth in yards per play on both offense and defense.

      TENNESSEE -3
      TENNESSEE @ OAKLAND | 12/08 | 4:25 PM EST
Since QB Ryan Tannehill was installed as the starter, Tennessee is 5-1 and has averaged 36 points over the last three weeks. The Raiders got off to an impressive start with smoke, mirrors and coach Jon Gruden’s magic but have declined dramatically and been outscored 74-12 in their last two games. Oakland’s hope is that a return home will flip the script, but that's unlikely to happen here.

        SAN FRANCISCO @ NEW ORLEANS | 12/08 | 1:00 PM EST
As we saw on Sunday against Baltimore, defense travels, and the 49ers have one of the best in the NFL. That's why I'm confident they will be able to cover the spread in a tough road environment against a Saints team that is good, but has benefited from playing in one of the weakest divisions in the league. Drew Brees of 2019 isn't the Brees of old and will have problems with the 49ers' pass rush. I like the points, but I don't hate the San Francisco money line either.

                      3-Unit Play: Take 135 Broncos +9.5 over Texans (1 p.m., Sunday, December 8)

I'm taking the points with the Broncos on Sunday. Tough spot for a Houston team that isn't always well-coached in tough spots. Houston is off the big win over New England but the Texans couldn't run the ball and finished with fewer than 280 yards total. That's 3 straight games where the Houston offense has been mediocre at best. And they've now faced Baltimore, played a divisional game with Indy, won the big game against the Patriots, and have a divisional clash with Tennessee next week. Tough spot. Denver plays hard and are just a handful of late-game plays from a 7-5 record. I expect this one to go right to the wire with Denver hanging the number. I'm taking the points with the Broncos on Sunday. Thanks & GL! Scott Spreitzer.

                      7-Unit Play: Take 152 Patriots -3 over Chiefs (4:25 p.m., Sunday, December 8)

I'm laying the points with the Patriots on Sunday. No, New England's offense isn't what it was last season. But they still have the Brady-Belichick connection, and the top DVOA defense in the league and I expect an all-out effort off of last week's loss to Houston. The numbers are ridiculous, in a positive sense, when it comes to the Patriots' spread record off a loss and also at home. In fact, they're 47-22 ATS in their last 69 overall. They're a 59% cover with Belichick as HC and Brady at QB. They faced an extremely well prepared defense last week in Houston but Texans' DC Romeo Crennell knows the Patriot offense and had the talent to make the schemes work. KC doesn't have the defensive talent and New England should be able to run the football with success. Even Oakland ran all over the Chiefs, gaining 122 yards on the ground. The Raiders made massive mistakes in the big loss. Patrick Mahomes finished just 15 of 29 in that game and KC was out-gained by a significant margin. I expect the Pats to run the football, which leads to more swing-pass opportunities, and eventually, a few deep passes. Meanwhile, the Pats' own the best defense KC's offense has faced this season. And we should note that KC's offense isn't where it was last season. Over the years, you could do much worse with Belichick off a loss. I'll back the Brady-Belichick combo one more time. I'm laying the points with the Patriots on Sunday. Thanks & GL! Scott Spreitzer.

                      5-Unit Play: 2-Team, 6-Point Teaser: 154 Cardinals +9 to 156 Raiders +8.5 (4:25 p.m. Sun., Dec. 8)

I'm teasing the Cardinals to the Raiders on Sunday. Pittsburgh obviously in a tough spot and they have been an absolute bankroll burner as road chalk under Mike Tomlin. Last week's win was about as even as it gets until Baker Mayfield hurt his hand, which led to a pair of second half turnovers. The Steelers' last 4 wins have been decided by anywhere from 2 to 7 points -- and they lost at Cleveland by 14 in the middle of those wins. Arizona couldn't have been any worse than they were last week. But they have been more competitive than most thought they would be this season. The Cards played the Niners close, losing 28-25 and 36-26 -- however, it was 30-26 until a defensive TD by SFO on the game's final play. They're a team that also came within 6 of the Ravens. Kyler Murray's hamstring is healthier this week and I won't be surprised if they pull the upset. Finally, under Mike Tomlin, the Steelers have covered just 11 of 33 against teams that are out-scored by at least 6 ppg on the season. I'm teasing Arizona up to +9. The second half of the teaser is a play on the Raiders +8.5. Tennessee was out-gained by 100 yards last week and averaged just 5 yards per play. The game was tied at 17-17 with 5 min to go before the Titans blocked a FGA and returned it for a TD. The Colts committed an unusual amount of mistakes and blew a 17-7 lead. Oakland lost 40-9 to KC but actually out-gained the Chiefs by 73 yards. Oakland finished with a minus-3 turnover ratio but held Patrick Mahomes to 15 of 29 passing for 175 yards.. Meanwhile, the Raiders ran for 122 yards on 5 yards per pop. I expect Oakland to bounce back here, get the running game going, and cover the teased-up number. I'm playing a 6-point, 2-team teaser on the Cardinals to the Raiders. Thanks & GL! Scott Spreitzer.

3-Unit Play: Take 158 Rams PK over Seahawks (8:20 p.m., Sunday, December 8)

I'm backing the Rams on Sunday. I had decided this would be a money-line play when the Rams were actually getting points, so the fact the line has moved towards L.A., doesn't take us off this game. The Rams might not have the shiny record that Seattle has but they actually out-gain their opponents by twice as many yards as Seattle, on average. The Seahawks have been fortunate. We had them in the win and cover over Minnesota but the fact is, their last 7 wins all came by one possession scores, including a 30-29 win over the Rams when Greg Zuerlein missed a potential game-winning FG late in the contest. Russell Wilson had a terrific game and Chris Carson ran for 118 yards yet they couldn't shake the Rams. Los Angeles has won 4 of their last 6 games and the ground game, led by Todd Gurley has come around in 3 of their last 4 games. Seattle's run defense ranks 23rd in yards allowed per carry, which should allow the Rams to play their desired run-based, play-action offense. The Rams enter on a 10-2 ATS run against NFC opponents and we'll back them here. I'm on the Rams on Sunday night. Thanks & GL! Scott Spreitzer.

Pittsburgh's defense has looked like the old Blitzburgh defenses of yesteryear during this amazing stretch of games. Offensively, Devlin Hodges gives them a chance to put points up on the board, enough to where they can be trusted. Arizona is a bit too inconsistent from week-to-week to be counted on to pull off the upset against a red-hot Steelers squad.

Quietly, Kansas City has played much better defense the last two weeks. The Chiefs were able to turn the ball over against both the Chargers and Raiders. We know their offense is as consistent as they come, and when you combine that with improved defensive play, you like their chances moving forward. New England, unfortunately, is till trying to figure things out on the offensive side of the ball.

Stylistically, you can say the Bills and Ravens play the same game. Where the difference lies is in the effectiveness, and efficiency of the QB play. Lamar Jackson is an MVP front runner, while Josh Allen is managing the game. To me, that's at least a 10-point difference on the scoreboard. I can trust Jackson to get the Ravens into scoring position more than I can Allen.
