The college football regular season is in the books, conference champions have been crowned, and the playoff and bowl games have all been laid out. Meaning the only thing left is the annual Army/Navy game that acts as the unofficial bridge from regular season to bowl season play in the sport.

While the annual tradition on the field for this game showcases how special those involved in either of these programs are on a daily basis, from a betting market perspective, there is an annual tradition involved too. That is, when the Army/Navy game arrives, take the 'under' and already spend your winnings like a Christmas bonus. The 'under' has cashed in 13 straight years in this matchup, and to the shock of no one, this year's total saw nothing but 'under' action out of the gate.

For bettors that love to play streaks and live by the notion that you 100% have to ride streaks until they buck you because you can win multiple units riding said streak and only lose one when it halts, the 'under' in the Army/Navy game is always their glowing example of that case study.

So the question remains, will that streak stay in tact and give the masses another early holiday bonus, or will Scrooge finally show up and let both of these teams put some points up on the scoreboard?

CFB Odds: Navy (-10.5); Total set at 40.5

Before I go further into the total talk here, the side needs to be addressed. Remember, it had quite a streak as well with Navy winning 14 straight meetings from 2002 through 2015. The Black Knights finally squashed that back in 2016 with a 21-17 win and have now rung that up to three straight entering this year's game.

Now, seeing Army as a big underdog in this game is something bettors are quite used to as well, but for a team that saw an absurd amount of support in the preseason season win total market at 'over' 10 wins, you've got to wonder if similar support will show up this week. I'm not sure how you could expect any Service Academy team to win double digits entering the year – their undersized lines (OL and DL) because of their off-field duties are always going to be prone to getting worn down and beat up on by prototypical football teams – and that's not even considering a lack of execution angle that's bound to pop up from time to time in games. That's not to say Service Academy teams aren't capable of winning 10+ games, they definitely are, (Navy will hit 10 wins with a win this week), but to 'expect' it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense. To each his own though.

I bring that up because this Army team was expected to be much better then their current 5-7 SU record coming into this game. And with no Bowl game after this one, what's the best way for Army to put a positive cap on an otherwise disappointing campaign? Beating Navy of course.

A fourth straight win in this rivalry would be only the second time Army's program has accomplished that feat since before 1950 (they won five in a row from 1992-1996), an no matter how the entire season has gone for either program, winning this game ultimately makes their year. Given that Navy severely outperformed their preseason projections – they came into the year with a win total at 5.5 – taking the points with an Army team that's got plenty to prove would be the main way I'd look against the spread.

But that also means that you are going against a senior class at Navy that's yet to experience a win in this rivalry in their careers – yes, I know Navy could win and Army could cover – and given that the Midshipmen have been the ones to be better and more consistent all year long, stepping in front of that can be considered a tricky proposition. Teasing Navy down (or Army up for that matter) is always an option as well, but that means you need something to tease it to. Which brings me to the total.

There isn't a whole lot of need to go into all the main reasons why the 'under' has been so successful, as they are points that are beaten down to exhaustion and there is little need to get latched on to that pipe. If you are going the teaser route, teasing it 'under' the number definitely makes a whole lot of sense, but at the same time, that's going to be the overwhelmingly popular way to play this game, and that can be fundamentally problematic in handicapping routines/behaviors if you aren't at least considerate of the highly popular side.

Instead, let's see if there is a potential case to be made for the 'over'.

Well for one, the fact that Navy outperformed and Army underperformed relative to their preseason projections could actually work in the favor of an 'over' here.

From the Navy perspective, they've found a method that works for them this season and has produced favorable results. They put up at least 20 points in every single one of their games this year, 34+ points in nine of their 11 games, and only had one game finish with a combined score less than 52 points. That was a 35-3 win against USF, and with plenty of 'under' money likely yet to hit the board for this game (it's only Wednesday), we could see this total close at 38 or lower too. Even Navy's game against Air Force saw both teams put up at least 25 points, and if you are looking for a comparable, that's got to be the first place to look.

From Army's perspective, this is their last shot in 2019 to prove that there was at least some truth in that 10-win projection they had coming into the year, and it's not like Navy's defense can't be scored on. Army finished the year by putting up 31+ points in three straight games, and while their tilt with Air Force ended in a 17-13 loss, Army had 214 passing yards – yes 214 passing yards – in defeat. Which leads into my second point...

An 'over' in college football generally relies on needing the underdog to put up points and carry their weight. Given that Army averaged their most pass attempts per game (10.6) this year and most completions per game (5.1) since 2013 is relatively important. That's because the 2013 Army/Navy game was the last time this contest saw 41 or more points. It landed right on the nose of 41 (34-7), and Navy did the majority of the scoring that day, but Army throwing the ball more does lend itself to getting more points. Either through those pass attempts connecting – and likely in a big way – or more clock stoppages to actually slow the game down and give both sides maybe an extra possession or two relative to what we are used to seeing from them in recent years.

Obviously that logic will feel like a stretch for some, as it's always going to be easier to look at 13 straight 'unders' and just blindly ride it, and who knows, maybe we do see it cash for a 14th straight time. But eventually this 'under' run will end, and with both sides having a winning record to the 'over' this year – Army is 6-5-1 O/U while Navy is 7-4 O/U – and both being plenty comfortable in games where they need 30+ points to win, I'm going to look for that streak to be broken this season.

There is always going to be inherent value in looking at the high side of the total in this game because of the long 'under' run it's been on, and with rain in the forecast, maybe we get a few critical turnovers to get some quick points up on the board to help the cause.

It still doesn't hurt to wait as I doubt this number goes much higher, if at all, as it's likely to keep dropping once more recreational money hits the board with this being the only game in town. But I've got to publish my thoughts now, at 40.5, I'm plenty comfortable going against the grain and taking the high side of this total.

Saturday’s college basketball slate is packed with some great matchups from 12 noon on the East Coast to late-night contests out West.

Three key betting showdowns between nationally ranked teams start early in the afternoon with Oregon on the road against Michigan. Later that afternoon, Memphis heads to Nashville to square off against Tennessee in that in-state tilt. Closing out the betting action in a late start on the West Coast, Gonzaga faces Arizona in Tucson.

Betting Matchup

The Pac-12’s Ducks snapped a straight-up two-game skid with last Saturday’s 89-64 victory against Hawaii as heavy 17 ½-point home favorites. The losses were to Gonzaga as four-point underdogs and North Carolina as two-point favorites in a late-November holiday tournament. Oregon is 7-2 both SU and against the spread. The total has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in seven of the nine games. Senior guard Payton Pritchard has led the way with 18.8 points and 6.1 assists a game. He scored 20 points with 11 assists his last time out.

Michigan took the fast track to its lofty ranking with upsets against North Carolina and Gonzaga in that same tournament. However, after beating Iowa in its Big Ten opener, it comes into this contest fresh off Wednesday’s 71-62 road loss to Illinois as a slight 1 ½-point underdog. The Wolverines slip to 8-2 SU and 6-4 ATS. The total stayed UNDER 144 ½ points in Thursday’s loss and it has stayed UNDER in three of their last five outings. Michigan is four deep in double-digit scorers as part of its 78.5-point scoring average.

Betting Matchup

The Tigers have strung together six SU victories as part of an overall record of 8-1. Their 65-57 win against UAB last Saturday ended as a PUSH as part of a 5-3-1 record ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in three of their last five contests. Freshman center James Wiseman has started the last three games and he has averaged 19.7 points and 10.7 rebounds in those outings. The Tigers have six different players averaging at least nine points a game as part of a team scoring average of 82.1 points.

Tennessee has been idle since its 72-43 rout of Florida A&M on Dec. 4 as a heavy 30-point home favorite. This extended the Volunteers’ SU home winning streak to 31 games. They are 7-1 SU overall and 4-4 ATS. The lone three-point loss came against Florida State as two-point underdogs. The total has stayed UNDER in four of their last five contests. Tennessee is averaging 71.3 points per game and it moves to eighth in the nation in points allowed (55.9). Senior guards’ Jordan Bowden (13.9 points) and Lamonte Turner (13.8 points) are the leading scorers.

Betting Matchup

The Bulldogs’ lone loss against 10 SU wins came against Michigan in a lopsided 82-64 romp as 4 ½-point favorites. They have been favored all 11 games with a 6-4-1 record ATS. The total has gone OVER the closing line in eight of those outings. This roster runs seven deep with players averaging at least 10 PPG adding up to an 85.9-point scoring average that is ranked fourth in the nation. Gonzaga is shooting an impressive 49.9 percent from the field and 38.3 percent from three-point range.

A SU nine-game winning streak to start the season came to an end last Saturday with Arizona’s 63-58 loss to Baylor as a four-point road underdog. The Wildcats quickly bounced back with Wednesday’s 99-49 romp over Nebraska-Omaha to easily cover as 20 ½-point home favorites. This was just their second cover in their last seven games after going 4-0 ATS to start the year. The total has gone OVER in four of Arizona’s last six games. This is another high-scoring team with 85.5 PPG. The Wildcats are allowing 63.2 points a game on defense.

THE FLAME REGRESSION

The Calgary Flames (5-0 SU, 4-1 O/U last five) were also one of a handful of NHL teams that sacked their head coach. Calgary has responded by ripping off six straight wins (three as plus-money dogs) and has taken 17 of a possible 18 points in its last nine games. They will entertain the Carolina Hurricanes (3-2 SU, 2-3 O/U last five) on Saturday in what is the second game of a four-game homestand for Calgary.

The Flames have found ways to win but still have let their opponents produce more unblocked shot attempts (measured as Fenwick) over their last eight games and have been “lucky” in regards to stopping high-danger shot chances. Calgary leads the league over the last three weeks in high-danger save percentage at 96 percent (unsustainable; league average is ~82% percent and Calgary sits at 83% on the season) while also scoring 20 percent of its scoring chances (league average is around 12-13%; Calgary sits at 13% on the season).

Add in the fact that Calgary has the 10th-worst penalty kill since November 24 at 78.5 percent and a serious regression may be coming for the West’s No. 6 team. There should be good value in a Carolina ML on Saturday night and we will also be looking at the Hurricanes' team total of 2.5 and hitting the Over.


DEEP DIVE INTO LEAFS’ NUMBERS

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been relying on their goalie Freddy Andersen a lot since new coach Sheldon Keefe took over 10 games ago. Since November 29 the Leafs have been outshot and out-Fenwicked and sit in the Bottom-10 in shots, Corsi and Fenwick against. They are also allowing the fourth-most scoring chances against at nearly 25 a game.

Andersen is having to make nearly 11 high-danger (shots in close) saves a game but is holding his own with an 86% save percentage. During the Leafs’ current road trip, they have been outshot in two of three games while having a higher expected goals against than goals for but have outscored their opponents 11-8.

We are riding the Oilers ML on Saturday night as Andersen has been playing over expectations of late and a date with McDraistl and the league’s best power play could change that.


LOSERS CONVENTION IN MOTOR CITY

Well, the league’s worst losing streaks are finally over and coincidentally both teams that ended their slides on Thursday will meet in Detroit on Sunday night when the L.A. Kings visit the Red Wings. Both teams will be on the back-end of a back-to-back with L.A. traveling from Pittsburgh to Detroit overnight.

The Wings put out the fires of a 12-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets and also ended an 0-8 ATS run. The Wings’ power play went 2-for-4 with the man advantage and has been converting at nearly 30 percent through December which is the fifth-best rate in the league.

The Kings had lost 11 straight road games before Thursday’s 2-1 win in Anaheim. Over those 11 games, the Kings have scored more than two goals just once and saw the Under hit in seven of their last nine.

There is a good chance that both backup goalies play this one but even that doesn’t give us enough confidence in the Over. We do think that the Red Wings have the advantage in special teams, especially with L.A. allowing six power-play goals in its last 20 times shorthanded (most in the league). We are tailing the Red Wings team total Over 3.5 for plus money as it has hit in three of the Kings’ last five road games.


GOALIE PROFILE: PEKKA RINNE, NASHVILLE PREDATORS

The 2017-18 Vezina winner has fallen on tough times of late as Predators goalie Pekka Rinne has a 4.80 goals against over the last seven games and has just two wins. The Finnish keeper has allowed four or more goals in five of those seven games and has had to watch Nashville’s last two games from the bench due to his poor play.

The veteran goalie should respond after a couple of games to collect his thoughts and will take on a traveling Dallas Stars club Saturday that will be on the back-end of a back-to-back. Dallas has scored two goals or less in eight of its last 12 road games while the Predators have scored the second-fewest goals since November 7 and are scoring at under 10 percent on the power play.

We may get a 6 on the total with how badly Rinne has been playing, but are willing to take the Under even at 5.5 in what is a great bounceback spot for an experienced goalie going through a rough patch.


INJURY UPDATE: F TRAVIS KONECNY, PHILADELPHIA FLYERS

The Flyers leading scorer is still out with a concussion and will likely miss Saturday’s game against the Wild in Minnesota. Philly could also be missing another key part of its offense with Oskar Lindblom questionable for the weekend tilt. Lindblom is tied with Konecny for the team-lead in goals and both are major pieces of the Flyers’ power play that went 0-for-2 Wednesday in the first game without both stars.

The Wild have held their opponents to two or fewer goals in four of their last five home games and dodge a bullet with absenses of Konecny and Lindblom as the Wild penalty kill has been near the bottom of the league since November. We are fading the Philadelphia offense and taking the Under on its team total of 2.5.
